WC's SD45 fleet sent to the scrapper

  • i know. the hustle muscle looks the same only with different colors, am i right?

i think at least one WC SD45 should be preserved as a historical "artifact". i know there's a WC unit on display at the Green Bay train museum. i just cant remember what type of locomotive it was. hopefully SD45...

  • Here in Homewood, Illinois (south burbs of Chicago) WC would bring in a transfer to Woodcrest yard on the IC. They would then back out of the south end of the yard with the returning cars onto the northbound main and when clear would leave town like there was a tsunami bearing down on them. It was usually two SD45s and there are legions of us that love them. in my mind they are an elegant looking design and there was no bad paint scheme on them.
  • your day? tch, all i could think about today was "six six two zero". it wouldnt leave my head. my buddy's going to the scrapper and there's nothing i can do about it!

WC SD45s just plain look the best. Alec is right. i have so many memories with WC6620. and i hate to see it go. but in reality, CN's new units just plain out-perform the SD45. i just dont think they need to be scrapped. i KNOW they have uses. somewhere or some place. i wi***hey didnt cost so much. i know of a very tiny company called wisconsin Northern who could have greatly benefited from even ONE of these units

  • Well, maybe they arent putting out as much *ok i know they arent* but they give more than 3,300. They just lowered the RPM, not the horsepower. Im not a engine guy (i dont know much about the guts) but they still should give close to 3,600.

Max,Matt, and all of the people who know me know i love the SD45s, specifically Maroon and Gold. I care not to get into this matter because it makes me feel bad, and just doesnt make my day go well. Sad thing is CN is pricing the SD45's WAY TOO HIGH! Thats why no one will buy them. So i dont think CN will even try selling them.

  • The WC SD45s still have the 20 cylinder blocks, are slowly being scrapped one by one, and if I'm not mistaken, they're only putting out 3300hp as to not break the crankshaft.
GN 400 Hustle Muscle is preserved, I believe, at the museum in Duluth, and if not there, it's somewhere around there.
And I don't think they should be preserved..yet. I think they should be run for another 5-10 years, then be scrapped with a few preserved, some repainted in former road colours..I know it's not that realistic, but I like my plan.

  • maybe. i'm not entirely sure. if it is, then great! i'm just gonna miss at least WC6620. i had my high school senior pictures taken on it. i would go as far as calling that machine a friend

  • If I am not mistaken (which has happened on more than one occasion) the WC SD45's have been downrated and no longer had the 20 cylinder engines in them. They are also hand me downs from a number of railroads and are probably significantly altered. Isn't the GN Hustle Muscle an SD45 that is preserved?
  • QUOTE: CN has begun shipping the WC SD45 units to the scrapper. the image showed them all in a row ready to be scrapped
    NO!!!!!!!
