WC's SD45 fleet sent to the scrapper

  • good point, alec. so am i right in saying that WC obtained so many pure SD45s because when the other roads were getting rid of them, WC bought those very units?

it's also good to see a halt in retiring the units. have any been bought yet?

and how many WC geeps are left? hell, how many non-SD45 WC units remain? Alec, i'm sure you know this

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • I found that LTEX has six SD45's leased to the Florida East Coast Railway . Acording to a rooster some are ex-WC. Do the numbers 1745 and 7426 ring a bell? If the FEC treats them like the rest of their engines they wil run them till you can not squeeze one more mile out of them. This is a railroad that till recently still had active GP9's on their roster they bought new. they also have 4 LTEX SD45T-2's that are listed as ex-SP's.[2c] As always ENJOY

Don't they have some use as switchers somewhere on the system?

Sorry Alexander, but these engines are much too big (and fuel-guzzling) for local service. We're talking almost as long as some of the really modern engines here.
  • 1745 does, but did you mean 7496?

Yes, thats the reason, as many roads wanted them gone. The WC bought them pretty cheap, and made them some of the best running SD45s around. I havent heard anything about them being bought. Geeps, most all besides the GP30's and the GP7Mr's and GP9's are still running. Most all of the GP40's 3000-3025, then the two GP40-2's 3026, 3027. GP38-2s 2001-2006.

Not totally true. As we speak, #7498 is working the South end of Shops Yard(North Fond du Lac, WI) and is used on the South End local in the area.
  • And in regards to fuel usage, the WC rated the SD45's at 3000 by adjusting the fuel racks on the engines. Less strain on the drivetrain, and better fuel "economy".

When WC started up, the SD45's were being turned back to the lessors after their 15 year leases(average among railroads.) So they could be picked up at bargain prices. Most of the original owners also purchased SD40-2's, which were newer and more efficient.

IIRC, the average price WC paid for the SD45's was around $80k per unit...at the time, a good price. In later years, WC priced used 40-2's, but decided to go the rebuild route until prices dropped after the 40-2's were being returned to their lessors. In fact, WC/Oxford Leasing owned several ex-MILW SD40-2's and some ended up owned by DM&E.

Alec, you forgot the SW-1500's...most if not all are still around. 6 or so of them work Shops Yard in M.U.[8D]
  • Hehehe, ya, well i was in the Geep mode, i suppose you could count a switcher as a geep.

  • That's sad. Although, I must make the point, railroads do not CARE what we railfans think. It's unfortunate and unfair, but that's life.

I remember seeing a couple of WC SD45's down here a few years ago. I thought it was strange because all I had seen prior to that was CSX and NS. Of course, this was before I became heavily involved in model railroading and railfanning.

  • it's just unfortunate. i mean look at UP. they have 2 units left in CNW colors, but can never aint or patch them as they always need them on the road. so how is it that CN can easily retire 20+ SD45s? wouldnt they also need them on the road? or does UP just have too few locomotives. despite them buying a hefty amount of SD70ACEs

  • Because CN just bought a bunch of new units. As these orders come in, the can retire the surplus locomotives.

  • As we fans of the SD45s lament their passing, how about a photo of mine. It is of a a WC SD45 before it was retired.

    Long live SD45s!
