I had to check "other" because my favourite locomotive ain't American but has ancestory, back to SD40 locomotives. My favourite Australian Locomotive is the Australian 81 Class, and the reason is because when they were first built, they could be found working interstate freight, passenger and heavy coal trains. And like all EMD locomotives, they had the fabulous 2 stroke sound as well.

I personally like most any 6 axle unit, especially the NS Dash 9-40CW, Living near a NS main I see a lot of them.The SD70 series is pretty cool also the NS version with the flared radiators and phase II cab looks great,unfortunately it is made only in brass by OMI, they have a picture of it on their website @ www.overlandmodels.com

Every one of the locomotives on the list are my favorite. I am a CSX/Norfolk Southern Modeler and they both operate all of those locomotives.
