    This is a topic about Amtrak, and their F40s are very worn out. Long distance Amtrak service is very different and much harsher than commuter service, and they have seen many more miles than them.

  • In my opinon to all the people who think that the Genisis Engines are ugly, you all need to get used to change. Nothing is gonna last forever, it seems that to most railfans that the "favorites" because they look good should be there forever. I like the genisis units, I mean come on, the newer fleet that re-placed the older fleet don't have to look exatly the same. That would be like a crappy sequal to a movie or something. I guess what I'm trying to say is
    "LET CHANGE HAPPEN", and "WELCOME NEW THINGS"

    Well, his point (However incorrect) was that the newer GEs are inferior in many ways to F40s, only one of which is style.

  • You can build new F40PH's but if you do just update it some. A more eco frendely engin, move the HEP unit to the nose and use the extra space for a battery bank to store power from the dynamics. And use radeal stearing trucks. A bigger fule tank with indentations on the side for the air tanks. And you have a great locomotive.

    But it won't be the SAME. It will be a different engine, and may not be as reliable as such, you're basically saying that all you care about is the shell, which is one thing that railroads DON'T. It's an outdated carbody, and railroads tend to like progress. (Granted, whether the P40 was progress is under debate)

  • Yeah, it would be cheaper and easier to buy a new locomotive.
    Not to mention, whats the point? same car body, which would also probably need to be rebuilt, so would the chassis, cab and everything else, you bascilly have a new engine when you were done. not to mention you'd need new trucks, traction motor's, diesel engines, EVERYTHING would either have to be replaced or rebuilt, there's really no point.

    News flash, The Amtrak F40PHs don't have a HEP unit. The head end power is taken off the main alternator. That's why a unit in HEP mode runs at notch 8 RPMs to maintain the proper frequency of the AC. And a battery bank would be useless in long distance passenger service. And a radial 2 axle truck? WTF is that?

    OMFG! You remind me of paulcystena the way you **** on our answers. We have given you viable reasons why railroads do not always go with the "cool" looking loco. Now settle.

  • 1.) You know how they update locomotives when they rebuild them... Well I am suggesting something like that except with all new parts.
    2.) Look at Hummer instead of making a whole new SUV they modify there design, H2, H3 ex ex.

  • Great idea. Well get all new parts. New trucks,traction motors,compressor,main generator, prime mover, dynamic brake grids, radiators, electrical cabinet, wireing, pipeing, brake valves, and controll stand. Then we will put all those new parts in an old rag-tagedey, shot out, worn out, rusted, corroded, rattle prone body&frame with 4-5 million miles on it. Yea, That sounds like a good idea doesn't it.[#dots]

    And hummer has never re-built a old hummer with all new parts.

    Me thinks you need to lay off the smoke.

    1. A ground-up rebuild of an F40PH would have to meet current emissions standards, which requires larger radiators than will fit in the radiator compartment - GP40s and GP50s have the same problem. A rebuild would need a revolutionary new EPA-compliant cooling system that fit in the carbody, unless the rebuild makes the locomotive bigger on the inside than it is on the outside [:o)].

    2. Comparing an HMMWV to an H2 or H3 is like comparing a 1980 Impala to a 2006 Impala.
    B-Dubya -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inside every GE is an Alco trying to get out...apparently, through the exhaust stack!

    O yea, we will just take old ALCo parts and put it in them, cause its not like you need new parts to rebuild a unit or anything.....
