I liked Mike's shot. Not only did he get a great "meet" picture, but you can see the engineer in the cab.

This is a case of "six of one, half-dozen of another".

Two completely different styles, two completely different themes, two completely different emotional responses.

On the one hand, one must admire the impression of speed and movement in Erik's photo, while at the same time admiring the feeling of power and action in Mike's.

However, to me, due to the 'punch' of Erik's photo, he got my vote.

I'm still not a big fan of the cropping of either of these shots. That being said, the CN/WC shot is a little more pleasing of a composition. I just wish a little more of the loco had been shown.

While I generally like pan shtos (probably because I'm really bad at them), cutting the locomotive in twain just doesn't feel right.

Anyways, thanks guys for a great year of shots. I'm certainly looking forward to next year!

[:D] Looking at each photo & thinking what it would take to get that snapshot & imagining yourself right there, right then taking the photo with the sounds & smells, looks like Mike was down on the track & Eric's was taken from a moving vehicle with a telephoto. If I had an option of taking both pictures & what I like, I would vote Mike's . Looks closer, more involved, as I was, growing up on a Southern RR major artery.

Both photos are good.Erik'sphoto when enlarged gives a real sense of motionand loco is very sharp. But, Mikes photo seems to capture power and keep looking back at it.So I must chose Mikes photo. Your photos are always tough to chose the best.

I got an error message when I tried to vote, so, rack up a vote for Mike's photo. That pacing shot still does nothing for me...sorry big E.

I thnk both foto's deserve to win. unfortunately we all must only vote for one. I voted for Mike's as I too thought it showed railroading doing what it does best - lots of tons over lots of miles. I agree with the other folks about the overall quality of photos in this contest. In fact this contest gives me a new wallpapre for my computer at least twice a month. I can tell you that these pictures really start a lot of conversations here at work ( a major auto company), most everyone else has cars or trucks but not me I have either Mike's or Erik's latest work up and showing. Thanks again fellows and keep up the good work in the NewYear

Definately Erik's shot. Mike's is a good picture, but I just like Erik's better in this instance.

Mike and Eric,
You guys are forcing us to employ the wisdom of Solomon! You sure make it hard to pick a winner! I do like both photos, each has it's own merit and deserves to win. It would be very easy to dismiss this and state that in everything there must be a winner and a loser. In actuality I believe that these entries are equal ... a tie! [:D]
So what's a boy to do? Unfortunately, "a tie" is not an option so I went with Mike's photo. It was difficult to capture two subjects and the content of Mike's submission says "railroading" more than Eric's, IMHO.

This would be so much easier without all the whining. Every parent thinks THEIR child is the brightest crayon in the box but the name Einstein still stands out for a reason. You guys do great stuff, we obviously enjoy seeing even the losers (and even again!) but somebody's gotta lose. I would be proud to have caught a pacing shot like that but Mike's is still better art.
So, no wind in your sails Erik, but no wind up your skirt either.

I voted for Erik's photo, just as I did back when it was up for the Volume 28 competition. Both are great, but I had to go with that one. I love the sense of speed and power it conveys. It's just such a perfect shot!

Both are great shots, but I had to go with Eric (Pace shot) not an easy shot! Plus doing this does not require the entire eng. to be present. good job both of you.>

Whine, moan,.....comon you guys!!!! These are both good photos so I give one vote for each. Now you know how hard it is to please everybody. There are so many different reasons for readers votes, it is difficult to pick a reason why one "wins" over another. Both of you guys deserve a lot of credit for your photo entries. Keep up the good work & I look forward to a new season of "Trackside with Erik & Mike".
