TEEN RAILFAN PLACE-LET'S TALK TRAINS! Thread Locked

  • james, I only saw first generation Geeps for $40-$50. No 38-2s.

Noah, yes, I'm most likely get those F5s. I'd really rather get them from my LHS, but if they're only available from Lombard Hobbies...

So much to buy- I'm just gonna have enough $$ to get the Atlas CGW S1 I pre-ordered (comes out late this month) then I want an ABBA set of P1K CGW F3s, Intermountain CGW FP7A and F7B (w/o sound), and the BLI CGW NW2 (w/ sound). Plus I've gotta buy some rolling stock and track. I really hope the F5 will at least be available for a few months (aka. ChristmasWink [;)]) since it looks to be limited-run.

  • JAMES all WE can do is ASK the cab crew it is up to them to say wether they want riders or not.......although it is very rare that they turn someone down...........
  • I went rail fanning yesterday. Man were there allot of trains.

On a good day you can see well over 60 trains.. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Anyway.. We go to South "I" (South Itasca, Canadian Nationals line from superior to Chicago.) and a local was sitting in the siding. 2 SD40-2s and a Dash 9. Kent Rengo, a friend of mine, was the engineer.

About 20 minutes later a north bound CN train makes its way into the siding beside Kent's train. Kent has his locomotives uncouple from his local and moves on to the main line with them. He drops the dash 9 off on the main and then returns to his train. This is when another friend, Dave Bruns, steps off the North Bound and notices me standing there taking pictures. Max and I talk to him for awhile, while his engineer pics up the Dash 9 that had been dropped off on the main. They went back into the siding and about 30 seconds after there locmotives are back on the siding a UP manifest train makes its way through with three EX Chicago Northwestern Sd40-2s. (Same UP engineer we saw on the last 2 runs in the past.)

After that went by dave went home and kent swapped trains. (from local to north bound.) and sat in the siding for 1 hour. The best train was next. On the radio there was a train with 5 locomotives. 3 of them were isolated. All three locomotives were older BC rail unit going down for auctioning in Illinios. The first was a MLW 2 axle unit that looked like an RS11. The other two were great looking B36-7s!!!!!!!!!!! It was quite the sight to behold. Pictures will come soon.

Anyway, I just reserved 2 rapido trains passenger cars. A duplex sleeper and a coach in the Milwaukee road scheme.

    Decisions? No. CP AC4400.....
I'm still saving for the PCM steamer. After a few calculations, I decided that, given my current earning habits, I'll be ale to scrape enough together in time for the 4-8-4. As for P2K quality, I think the fact that this will be my 12th Proto locomotive speaks for itself.

Ah i see! good stuff then! and ok...you convinced me... UP flag it is Tongue [:P] nah those CP AC4400 are sharp looking locos...

and 5 of my 10 locos are P2K...Best, bar my two Atlas dash 8's.

  • I have two of the brand new P2K locomotives. A GP38-2 and a U28B both Milwaukee road of course. Other wise my locomotives are from Atlas. I was not to impressed with the Kato even though I have two. But P2K has moved up to be second on my list of locomotives to have. I want those SD45s they made. They are getting hard to find.

I am also going to experiment with the brand new Athearn Genesis MP15ACs this fall. I want one for my birthday.

  • James - American James - That RS-11-like diesel is the Canadian version, albeit with a Caterpiller engine. It's an RS18CAT. They're getting rid of them?? AW! Noo.... stupid CN. Another instance of them getting rid of the locomotives that will get the job done....don't look away, you might miss the next crash. People are starting to hate CN, with infallible reasons. Kind of like UP, in that respect, except CN does nothing to value their heritage - If there are two good things about it, it's their motive power and their almost total lack of patches. I think that the good aspects of CN stop there.

  • Thank you for the welcome

Yeah I am sort of catching an eye for it. It's hard though. Since my camera sometimes has a mind of it's own.

I think I have seen some of your pictures on RP.net, I actually like a lot of them. Almost wish I grew up in that necf the woods to see the WC passing through. ATSF is just as good though.

Noah- Three trains a week? wow that is rare! I am lucky enough to hear the whistle through the woods if that. If only I had the talent to determine what engine is rumbling through, like a Geep, an SD40 (-2) SD45 (-2) or even the GE's, C4400W, or DASH 9. I'm still learning how to correctly identify the models, cause I have a hard time teeling what the difference is between a dash 9 and a C4400W, etc.

Enough rambling, I am sure I'll pick it up soon. Great to be a part of it all.

  • Hey Guys
Well I guess I'll join the fun since I'm finally a teen as of June 17th

  • My best runner is my Stewart F3. It runs quieter and smoother than my Atlas', but my Atlas GP40 has more detail.

Well if you mean scrap them... there not scrapping them. They are sending them to Illinios to be auctioned off to other railroads. The news has been going around the CN for quite awhile, and It just so happened that I was there on the day that they were being shipped out. Max and I got quite a few pictures of them!! Anyway I have the CP SD40-2s finally developed today and I will be scanning them and posting them here soon.

You'll learn how to take good photography alright if you keep at it. Just today I was going through some of my photos from about two years ago, and most of them really aren't that great, because I didn't know what I was doing. But I've slowly developed a better eye for photography, and I've also got a good friend and railfanning buddy whos been railfanning for years, and he's shown me quite a few pointers since I've been on a few railfanning trips with him.

I've been railfanning for a few years, and even I don't know all of the different models yet. Especially when it comes to GE. EMD I'm a little better at, mainly because they are usually a little more distinct. But most GE's look awefuly similar to me (expect for something like a U30C from a Dash 9, that I can tell). I guess it also has to do with that I don't see that many GE's either, as the line nearest to me runs almost 100% EMDs.

BTW, I like your forum name. "Night Train" is what the crew of the three time a week local up here likes to call themselves, because they are pretty much the only train on this end of the railroad that runs at night. They are known as the PM job offically because they come on duty after 1400 most days.

James, do you know what time the UP train out of Itasca is normally called for, or at least when you usually see it? I'm guessing that train is the MITPR (Manifest-Itasca to Privso), as that's the only UP train I know of up on the CN up there other than his counterpart, and I've been trying to get a feeling for what time he'd be down in this neck of the woods, back on UP rails. I'd like to catch him here sometime.

  • Im glad you like my shots! Im also happy you have an interest in the WC. Funny thing, is that from WC 6578-6632 were all ex Santa Fe SD45s. Heres a shot of mine, with 2 ex Santa Fes leading!
