  • Hey all-

I had one heck of a good day yesterday! CSX was having their Collinwood Yard's "Open House" for the public. I obviously went, and man was it great!

CSX 5245 (ES44DC) was parked out, and you were able to get into it, which I did and my dad got a cab shot of me in the engineer's seat. One of the CSX workers was also taking pics of the kids/people in the engineer's seat.

A rare HLCX ex Trona SD45-2 was in the shops with CSX 8709 (SD60). CSX 1177 and 1187 (MP15AC) were parked at the yard. CSX 9156 (RCPHG4) was also there.

As I climbed into the CSX 5245, a Southern Pacific (unpatched) AC4400CW and a UP AC4400CW passed by with a loaded coal train (no photos of that). But I did have a great time with 32 pics.

Oh yes, and later on at Akron, OH, I had a rare catch of a UP SD50 pulling a two mile long train of nothing but empties. The SD50's number was 9840.

  • Rich- a Unpatched SP and a UP on a CSX loaded coal train SWEET!. What was the Trona number 6412? If it was I saw that twice in Folkston, its also a ex HLCX engine.

The 9840 is now in Maryland pulling bare tables.

Dude!!! It's time for you to come to Duluth were you can get all the cab rides you want. By god man... step right on up to the North Shore Senic Railroad and have fun. You're only three hours from Duluth!!! Plan a trip.

    Nothing new here.

Max and I did go railfanning and caught a Santa Fe SD39 switching 17th street yard over in Superior. That is one nice EMD. Got pictures of it.

Also saw a Union Pacific Manifest train come through Saunders and go down to Pokegama Yard (CN's yard). About two minutes after the UP train went by a Canadian Pacific Grain train came roaring out of Saunders. All three locomotives were EMD Sd40-2s!!! There is no sound greater than SD40-2s notched out!

Had quite allot of fun. We also saw, on the way home, three SD60s painted in the SOO Line scheme. Those things are getting rare to find!!! In the back ground was our famous SD9s idling away!!

Man, it's literally been YEARS since I saw a 3-unit consist of CP SD40-2s...and my mum's automatic camera butchered the photograph of the last train I saw with that consist... Sad [:(]

Here's the ill-fated shot...this was back in 2004, on the way home from Vancouver. Saw it in Kamloops around 8AM, then saw it again with a lot of luck at Field in the evening...

I remember that all the numbers had a 0 and a 9 in them.....boy, that consist sounded really good in Kamloops! Last time....the last time.....never again was I to hear the chug of CP SD40-2s pulling hard up the Big Hill... Sad [:(]Sad [:(] Well, I'm still looking forward to MRL next week.....sweet! Only next week!

I have touched a CW40-8 ex CR  I thought I was going up but I wasn't well I didn't ask. I have also been in NS 4615 and NS 7083, 7083 was going LHF pretty cool going LHF. I have also been in a CSX CW40-8 and a AC44CW but can't remember the engines, but the guy in the AC44 owes me a train ride. The ones I can remember is going in WSOR 10A but a couple of hundred people went in that one also, CP Rail 6073 and CSX 8766, I got a picture of the marker lights on 8766's nose (the marker lights were on). I also got a reverser off probaly a BNSF EMD unit and have crew packs along with 3 work orders. I could have gone in IC 100 but they were washing it, plus gone in NS Exutive coaches twice pretty neat stuff in there. Plus theres a conductor on CSX that will let me on his train because I told him about a ex MP HLMX coal car with its brakes stuck.

My freind Paul Wise has been in lots of stuff M-2,D9-40C,SD40-2, you name it he's probaly been in it but hes got a freind that works for NS, well that mainly the reason why. He's also been in one of the last WC SD45's left running but, its headed back to CN for the SD45 deadline. Plus its a P.O.C. broken crankshaft it will only run as a DIT.

Oskar, I have only been in three engines. I have been in WLE 3034, which is the engine that I rode several miles in at Medina, OH. I have been in WLE 6347 (EMD Blue paint) SD40-2. And I have been into CSX 5245 (ES44DC).

Engines/Cabrides I almost got/got into: Well, I almost got a cabride from Horseshoe Curve, PA to Pittsburgh, PA back in May, the engineer and conductor were really nice. We met them at a gas station.

I have almost gotten into WLE 3080, still vaguely in Rio Grande lettering. I have almost been into WLE 300, in UP paint along with WLE 4025 and 4018.

That is about all for me. Oh yeah, my friend Tom Habak has been in Loram RG 306 when it was parked at Berea back in real early June, I have yet to get into one of those.

  • Talking about rides are we?

Well, one of the many, but ive been in Atmo's beloved 6620. Plenty of SD40-3s, SD45s, Ive been across the St. Croix High Bridge, Ive road in SOO 6035, and had a ride from Shoreham yard to Pigs Eye yard on the CP in the CP 8534. SD70Is, SD40-2s, etc etc.

Ive ran a few units also, although that was back when I didnt take pics (well, most were) so Im not sure about numbers. But I eased I think 2 SD45s and some other engine into a yard. That was great.

But the best thing besides thinking about the good days, is that I had a good day yesterday.

WC 7522, one of the 23 SD45s left, made the trip to New Brighton and I definately got my shots of it. That was the first time ive ever seen that engine.

No, those shots were before I ordered the lens. The most telephoto I have there is 200mm. And don't worry, I'm absolutely sure you were right about the quality....
Yesterday I went on a bike ride to the CN yard on the east side of town, and got turned around quite a few times before I actually got there. I ended up visiting pretty much all of Calgary's important rail yards, and I didn't even take the 15 pictures needed to finish off the roll.....the CN yard was totaly overrated (Or maybe it wasn't rated at all, and it was all in my head) only a few tracks, two GMD-1s (Which is what I went to see, but they were backlit and it was overcast) I did wind up at Ogden Shops, though. (Evan, now I know how you feel about Olewin...quite a few of the buildings have been abandoned since 1999, when cutbacks began) And Richard, you might like this: The shops are now owned by Alstom. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let me in, since most of the shop forces were on vacation. Through that fence I saw...
    H16-44 (Faded action red)
H16-66 (Fake 7000 series tuscan red and gray paint, CP never owned any H16-66s)
CPA16-4 (Tuscan red and gray, block lettering)
DRS4-4-1000 (The early CP paint scheme, lighter red and a yellow stirpe with a smile on the nose)
SD40 (I already got a shot of one at Alyth, though. 556x)
    C-424
    CEFX SD45 (Blue)
And countless other wonderful, wonderful things....I also caught two GG20Bs, CP 1700 and 1701 at the south end of Alyth. On top of all this, I biked nearly 100km.....as you can guess, I am WASTED.

    Nice nice
I've been in many a engines. Some dont really count (Like at Museums because everyone can go in them) but I'll make a list as well as I can remember.
    GP7
    F7
    FP9
    U23B
    Alco S2
    GP40
    C40-8W
All units were operational and moving.

  • I can see this is very busy!!!

I ahve been gone a total of 4 days and there still hasn't been any more pages added??

Anyway, nothing new here. I am retracking my yard on my layout. instaed of three tracks , there will now be seven. A big add on for my layout. I will have much more room.

  • Well, I now have something to write about. Today I went to fan CN 6060. When I got there, the train was being robbed...lotsa gunshots before the NWMP came to clean up the 'bandits'. Then 6060 comes to teh station, TENDER FIRST! Cloudy....runs around...I take 20 pics....they lube up the drivers, we have tea, then walk around the old roundhouse and grain elevator, then chase her west. First grade crossing, I set up two feet from the rail...judging from the whistles, the engineer wasn't particularely pleased...made a great picture, and I moved out of the way when he was 75 feet away...was probably only going 20MPH, too.
Next crossing was a carefully planned wedgie....
Then HAIL. Tons of it. Golf ball sized, denting our car, hurting my head, making tons of noise and bringing tree limbs down all over the road. then we went to Stettler, got a pic (hopefully) in the pouring rain (exposure was tough, since I was rapidly getting soaked...)
Then home. Saw a great photo, but I am more out of film than I've ever been before.
Incidentally, here are some old pics I thought I'd upload, they're from a few months ago.

  • This place sure has been dead lately. Not much going on at all over here, I've just been doing some routine work on the module, nothing special to report, and I haven't done a whole lot in the way of railfanning lately. I've been checking into this place, but there hasn't been any new posts and I've had nothing to write about.....

James, expansions of yards is almost always a good thing. I know when I added even two more tracks to my yard it helped imensly, and when my club added a few more staging tracks to our layout it has helped to get rid of some of the congestion too.
