Max, James, & Kale- you guys have to give me the grande tour this August when i come up to Duluth as a vacation celebrating my graduation from high school. i should be up there from August 2 to August 4. i will surely hit up the museum one of those days. i must see the ex WC 700 GP30 and any sweet DMIR stuff you have on display. not to mention the simulator Max was telling me about on AIM. my camera's gonna need a second set of batteries after i use it for double duty (railfanning and boatnerding. yay thousand footers!) that's in, like, a month though. but i'm excited. Duluth is an awesome city. the main highway there was once a railroad, wasnt it? cant wait!

and Alec, try hard to come up there too. i need someone to kick me when i say something stupid...

Can't wait to meet you, and just before I go on vacation too. I go on vacation August 5. Like I said good timing!!

We will have you run the simulator and take you into the Model railroad building and yes, give you a cab ride in SOO Line No. 700.
Sorry Max if this makes you jealous!!

  • Why would that make me jealous James?.....
Power went out on the line today, so we almost had to flag the crossings....the 7 hundy was purring away and made it up Lemon Drop in notch 2. Its nice not having the horn overhead.

Before the horn was over the engineers cab window and it was so loud that most, even with hearing protection, couldn't stand it. So instead of a Leslie three chime we put a leslie RS-5T in behind the what would be the dynamic brake grid even though the model never had any. Even where the horn is now, it's still extremely loud!! The original horn is still in place to make look like that it's the horn we are blowing.

And Max I was teasing you!!

Now this is MY opinon but the NS D9-40CW are the best and prettiest -9's.

  • I've heard the last CNW's are on regular service on an Auto Train out of the Chicago area. The rumor is that when the CNW heritage unit is painted it will hook up with the unpatched CNW's and run with them for a while too.

Speaking of the Heritage units, I do have a confirmed sighting now that the two undecorated SD70ACe's that will become the CNW and SP units were delivered to the WSOR at Granville, near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday. This means they should be painted in a few weeks time hopefully.

I'm taking a vacation our east as well this year, to DC, Philly and Baltimore, leaving on Friday. We're going to the Baltimore & Ohio Railway Museum and to the National Train Show over the course of the week. I should have a report from the Nation model railroad show when I get back. I don't know if I'll get in any railfanning or not though, we'll have to see.

Oskar, not to be rude, but HOW? I , sware to god, was thinking today they were the ugliest dash 9's running around. I dont like BNSF's, but they look better. I saw a train today, and the NS was trailing, and it just looks, blah. Thats the only engine NS owns that i think is ugly. I love the SD70's, but the Dash 9's are easily the ugliest 9's on the rails.

Plus, come on, CNW and NS? No contest.

  • NS of late has unarguably had a penchant for housing ugly locomotives, just look at their SD70M-2s! BLECH! Who in their right mind puts high headlights on a GE or the modern EMD cab? People who don't care about keeping up appearances, that's who!
I also am going on a trip soon, albiet a short one. Going to Jasper for the weekend on Friday, which will no doubt yield at least one good photograph if the weather forecast is right!

  • Alec- I don't know why you think their ugly but they are nice locos definaly in the WF/HH scheme very nice. The D9-40CW aren't the ugliest thing on rails, BQ23-7(CSX), C30-7(NS),U30C(NS/NW),GP9(NS 6924), and the BM20-2(EMD(year 1976)).

Matt- SD70M-2's are awsome for them too very cool locos can't wait till FEC gets their 4 of them. NS likes the high lights on their locos, heck about every loco has high lights for them. The nose light ACe or M-2 looks pain ugly.
