Which Great Passenger Trains Would You Have Loved To Ridden?

    The Trans-Siberian Express
    The Flying Scotsman
    The Indian-Pacific
  • Something like - starting from New york - The Century to Chicago, then a Hiawatha to the twin cities and back to chicago on on of the twin cities Zephyrs, next the Super Chief to LA, after that the Sunset Limited to New Orleans, and the Panama Limited back to Chicago. to fini***he trip, a ride on the Broadway Ltd to Ny.
    The reasons to choose are a mix of speed and comfort. Hiawathas, Zephyrs, Super Chief and Panama Limited were trains that currently rolled very fast, tipically 90 to 100 mph speeds were common. the Broadway and Centrury were less fast, maybe 80 mph (If anyone has an Official guide from the 50s, just divide the distance between 2 points per 60 and the multiply the value per the number of minutes, one gets good surprises )

    Olympian Hiawatha
    North Coast Limited
    Super Cheif
    Twin Star Rocket
    Sunset Limited when it ran from San Francisco to N'awlans

    But I'd also like to have ridden a Doodlebug or a local. The big lines can be recreated via the American Orient Express or other special excursions like the Daylight, but the locals, although not glamorus, and at times maybe gritty, are never going to experienced again. All that remains are memories and old photos getting fewer all the time.

    Somehow everyday life gets forgotton to history.

    The latest trend is what they call revisionist history which is writing history from the private citizen point of view. We can thank Trains Magazine for the Railroad Reading section of personal experiences from everyday ordinary people.

  • The Phoebe Snow, The Black Diamond, The Erie Limited, The 20th Century Limited, the Buffalo Day Express and Baltimore Day Express, Nickel Plate Road's City of Chicago and City of Cleveland, B&O's Buffalo Division locals all are among the trains I would have loved to have ridden. Erie Lackawanna' Train 28 out of Cleveland, during the railroad's final days, given the consist, was as close to the Phoebe Snow as I ever got for the three coaches were used on that train at one time or another as were E8s 825 and 833.I also would have loved to ride the Delaware and Hudson from Binghamton to Rouses Point and back.
  • Many years ago I saw a PBS special on the South African Blue Train. That would have been a neat trip.

    Here in North America I would have loved to take a Hiawatha, just to feel what it was like to do 100 mph behind a steam locomotive.

    The Super Chief; and of course, the 20th Century.

    I still dream of taking the Sunset Limited cross country, and then transferring to the Coastal Starlight in LA, going to Seattle. The Sunset might not be a class act, but the Starlight sure is.

    If my Canadian brethren were not so far north, I'd dearly love to take a VIA rail excursion from Halifax to Vancouver. Is that still possible?

  • I would have loved to have taken the Ghan to Alice Springs in Oz back before they rebuilt the line in the 80's, when it moved barely faster and lurched more than a druken Roo cause the dam termites kept eating the crossties. By all accounts every trip was an major adventure. Gone now, the trains still there but they rebuilt it with concrete ties, so now it runs faster than a scared Roo.
