What do you think the coolest, bset looking locomotive ever made??????

  • I'm casting my vote for the SDP40 and SDP45, the ultimate passenger locomotives from the pre-Amtrak period.

Also in the running are these export designs: DL500C (Alco's World Locomotive) and the AT26C (Australian, looks like an FP45 with a bulldog nose).
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Sorry[B)] I am a younger railfan/train enthusist , and forgot about alcos when I wrote this poll.

Besides, that is what OTHER is for[:)]
  • Best-looking are the F's, but my FAVORITE is the BQ23-7.
  • WOW WOW WOW!!!. what about the the 60 series?..I am a huge fan of the SP GP60..well actually Im a big SP fan all together!..those engines have a boxy, bulky, powerful, take no prisoner look to them, and thats just down right cool, they look good as NS units too..

Its like someone asks "what was the coolest car ever made" and instead of saying Ferrari, Bugatti or even a Corvette , you reply a 1972 Ford pickup truck! Uggh!

COOLEST ever built, hands down my vote is for this!

    Burlington Pioneer Zephyr!

Looks like its going 100 standing still.
For shame, you don't even list lotus in you cars, I would acutally pick a 1940 Ford anyways. Of course the best train is UP 4-8-4 FEF 3 s those could just about fly.
  • For Diesel its got to be An EMD F unit.

And For Steam Without a Doubt its Would Be the NORFOLK WESTERN J CLASS

While I respect your opinion, this forum is not about class, it is about opinions. Sure, an SD45 may not be as "classy" as a Pioneer Zypher, but it does show the other side of railroading, freight railroading, the gritty work, and a lot of people like that. I do

Besides, what is wrong with pickup trucks???, I happen to like them...
  • I like ac6000cw because of the power the sound and the style of it. yeasterday i have seen 6 ac6000cw number 601-606 hauling 144 coal cars loaded boy it was fun to seen that many ac6000cw's working together at one.[^][^]

  • F-M C-Liner. F and E units are a close second, with EMD Spartan cabs in third.

  • Wait Just a Dadgummed second! Where are the best looking diesel locomotives ever, namely Alco's PAs?
  • The SDP40-2, any left?
Next is SD45 high nose long hood forward, the proper way to run a diesel, screw the wide nose!!!

  • Okay, I think picking a favorite is just about impossible....

So here's a comment (not the best loco ever, just one that's not even mentioned here at all yet.)

General purpose : Gp30, low nose. I like the gp9/7, and they do good work, but nothing beats the styling on the front of a gp30. Just look at the way the roof housing meets up with the cab, the narror windows, the dual headlights mounted up high above the windshield.....They look like they should be much larger locos or something, but the look of one of those from the front says power.

  • Personally I thing no body style says "workhorse" like the old GP9--and their track record proved it. Just look at how many of the 50+ yer old locos are still on the rails today.

  • Too bad that your survey did not include any ALCO locos. [:(] I'd vote for the Alco RDS-15 "Alligator".
Since there were no ALCO's on the list, I voted for the EMD switchers - my personal favorite is the SW7 (Cow / Calf combo). [:D]
Also love the look of the SD40-2 "Snoot" and the GP60! [^]
