TEEN RAILFAN PLACE- LETS TALK TRAINS !

  • Noah, no applogie required, you are one of the nicer people I have met on here. I know trespassing is wrong, and I DID NOT GET NEAR THE TRACKS, just so you know. I am not that STUPID.[;)] When raifanning, my dad and I usually shoot pics from access roads, and they have usually resulted in visits from RR personell, and on the UP, MRL, CP, CSX, DMIR, and BNSF those conversations result in tours of yards, locomotive shops, fun converation and kind people. Even in UP yards, the guys just say, "You know your trespassing, and if it were up to me I would let ya' stay, so finish shootin' your pictres, and then go to that bridge, guys get great pictures from there!"

What I am trying to say is that rr people are usually much knder than that guy was...
  • wctransfer, do you know any Winkelmans? He was running 405/406 to Minneapolis a little while ago, atleast a month anyway.
  • I definately agree with your veiw that most RR people are really nice. I was even treated by a railroad to ride with him on that employee special a few weeks ago, and I have a few other good friends I've made because they worked for the WSOR, and I got to know them. This guy did seem like and idiot.

Well, homework calls. Good news though before I go. I get to railfanning this weekend!!! I'm going up to LaCrosse WI with a friend for a day of Railfanning the BNSF, CP, and the Milwaukee Road 261 Steam engine!!!! It's going to be awesome!! I promise I'll post photos when I get back!!

  • smile? You mean small, like the two under my pic? Go to

www.Frograil.com and find the railroad you want, open up paint, copy and paste the engines in any order you want. Then save it. get a www.photobucket.com account, and upload the pic on there. After that, copy and past the IMG part of the pic in your signature. If you need more help, just ask.

  • Yup, Timmys the one!! Haven't had the chance to ask him about you though.
  • Chris, yeah 261 is making a fall color run from St. Paul to La Crescent tomorrow afternoon. I don't have any details or schedule for it though, I'm just going with a friend who knows where he's going.

Well, I've got to be up bright and early(like 545 AM,) so I've got to get going. I'll definately post my photos when get back, it's supposed to be a beautiful day so I should get some good shots of the BNSF, CP, and the Steam loco. There's a chance we may catch an ICE run through too.

    See ya around,
    Noah

  • Hey, I just saw something very cool while railfanning today.
    [:D]

So my dad and I head over to this diamond to shoot some pictures. I first caught a freshly washed Chicago Communter train- very neat, and then caught a CP freight with 6 LOCOMOTVES ON IT!!!!!!!![:D][:D][:D][:D]

On the lead was a fully coweled Canadian something or other[%-)] followed by a leaser EMD SD40, then an MP15 in MILWAUKEE ROAD colors, foolowed by three CP SD40-2s all leading on long freight train.

It was cloudy today here in Chicago, so the picture turned out OK, nothing spectacular though... I mean ther lighting was OK but you cant' see the locomotives trucks in the photo.... Still a neat, dreary shot none the less!!!!!!!11[^]

Any cool railfanning things happen with you all?????????
  • Of course something cool happened to me, I saw lots and lots of trains!!! Here's my notes and photos from the day:

On Saturday, October 8th, I finally got a chance to go to La Crosse WI with a friend, well experienced in chasing trains on a "River Run" up and Down the Mississippi near La Crosse.

We started early in the morning at the BNSF La Crosse Yard, and on the BNSF side of the river. It was about Eight O'clock when we pulled up to the yard to hear a BNSF freight talking to the Dispatcher about a Northbound Signal, and getting the go ahead. So, we headed a mile or so North to a nice little spot where I snapped this photo:

    http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aed.jpg

Then we headed back for the yard, to see what was up. Sitting on the outer-most track was this hopper, my first personal contact with a new BNSF logo. I think with the Orange in it, it doesn't look bad!!:

    http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aee.jpg

Moving ahead a little ways, we ran into this locomotive, an SD9-3, according to the BNSF, as a yard switcher:

    http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aef.jpg

Well, behind that SD9-3 was a BNSF eastbound Freight that had been waiting for the Westbound we shot before to clear the single track territory. He had to make a set out, and so we had plenty of time to get ahead of him.

We decided the head down to Genoa WI first, and then work our way back up. We stopped on the North Side of Genoa for these two shots, the first of the BNSF freight that was setting out, and the second another Eastbound:

And thus begun the Parade. The BNSF elected to hold all westbound traffic South of the Yard, and they ran about 4 or 5 eastbounds in a row. By the time they were done, the BNSF had three Westbounds stacked up south of the yard waiting to get in. It worked nicely, as each Eastbound gave each westbound a roll by, so we could tell how close they were getting by which train they were talking to.

Here are the next few trains, in order of when they showed up South Of La Crosse. One westbound, but otherwise eastbounds. The one westbound was interesting because of the Run though Conrail unit:

With that the clouds started moving in, and so we set off for the Hobby Shop in La Crosse.

A short time later, we were at Dakota MN, now on the CP, awaiting the Milwaukee Road 261 steam excursion. Amazingly the sky had almost totaly cleared up, after being almost overcast earlier. Eventually 261 would come steaming around the corner and along the river, with a lot of steam coming out of the stack, and moving that fast, well, you can guess what happened shortly after this photo:

    http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121462

Now with plenty of Coal Smoke in our lungs, we headed off for Lunch. 261 was going to turn and take on water at River Junction, and head back up the river to St. Paul. we had at least a good hour before he would be going anywhere. While we were waiting, we heard 261 ask the Dispatch about the ICE train(M-KCSP) that was coming up from Marquette to St. Paul. It would have to wait behind the 261. The dispatch answered that he was to be expected at 1400, and it was about 1330 right now. So, we headed down the ICE to find him and follow him back up. We didn't get very far before we found him, as he was already about two miles South of River Junction. He was moving slow, as he couldn't do much until 261 cleared up. So, We ran ahead and I got this so-so going away shot of my First ICE train:

    http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/adz.jpg

The ICE train had work to do at River Junction, and so we ran ahead to chase and set up for 261 at what is called Donehower siding. We were really early, and so I set up my shot and waited. Apparently the dispatcher decided to run two Eastbound Freights through first, so 261 wouldn't have to meet them anywhere. So, these two frieghts showed up while we were waiting:

Then the main show came again:

    http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121415

We jumped back in the car to try to get one more shot of 261. He was moving fast enough we didn't get ahead of him until the other side of Winona Mn, in a little town called Minnesota City, because he had to stop to pick up Passengers in Winona. So here was the last shot of 261:

    http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121417

We knew the ICE M-KCSP wasn't far behind, and so we moved about 5 blocks up the tracks to a different spot, and I got this parting shot of him just as the sun swung around to set:

    http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121418

That would end up being our last shot of the day. We thought we heard something trip the Detector South of Winona, and so we headed into Winona to see if we could catch the train. Either it snuck by us, or we picked up a detector off the BNSF, because nothing showed up within about a half hour.

So we headed for home. And the weird part is, when we got to the CP at Mauston, what should we see but the same train led by that CEFX unit rolling through Mauston, almost 3.5 hours later!!

Overall it was a good day, and at least the weather co-operated. I'd say I had pretty good success considering this was my first time chasing up and down the CP and BNSF at LaCrosse. I had seen one or two trains before, but always by accident.

  • Great pictures Noah! GREAT BNSF SHOT WITH THE MRL LOCO- you got to see a locomotive of my favorite railroad!!! Right now, I am trying to post some pictures on railpictures.net

I have already established a username and have stopped by the forums.

As soon as I get some pictures there, I will post a link...
