TEEN RAILFAN PLACE- LETS TALK TRAINS !

  • Glad you guys want to work for the railroad. Rgroeling . I know people on the UP, and you dont, i repeat , DONT want to work for them. They have a shortage of EVERYTHING. Most of the time, they dont have enough radio's for all the engines. So if you have to switch ends , you have to take the radio with you. Anyway, i did some really good railfanning today. Look in the rrpicturearchives section in my sig, the ones that are from today are the NorthTown one, Wisconsin Central Hill one, CP in the twin cities. Have fun!

  • Ooh, you changed your sig. pic!
I've heard good things about CP and CN compared to UP from a raiload employee who would rather not divulge his name.
Whoah, www.sd40.com is your uncles' site? I went there before I even joined here! I was just looking around one day, www.sd40.com WHOAH, neat!
That's the same way I found trains.com. I was just randomly typing in addresses....

  • I found trains.com a few years ago, after seeing a little paragraph in the "Model Railroading is fun" section about them wanting us to post sightings of the MR 70th anniversary boxcar that the WSOR painted. It just happened that the car was being stored in Reedsburg on the long pass, and so I went to post my sighting. And here I am, 2114 posts later!!!!

Well guys, it's Friday!!!!!!! And I'm happy, as we only have a three day week at school next week!! And, if the weather is good, I'm going to be going with a friend railfanning on either Thurday or Friday next week, either in Central WI (Stevens point, Fondy, Wausau, stuff like that) or down to the Dubuque Iowa and Western Illinois area. Not sure yet which one.

Well guys, I'm going to get going. I may stop back in, but I'm going to head over to the MR coffee shot for a while...

    Noah
  • The real reason I joined was so I could get to the webcam.
Why do you only have a 3 day week?
I just noticed that railfan is spelled incorrectly in the topic thing...

  • There's some sort of a teachers convention going on on, accounting for the days off. It must be a state wide thing, or at least a region wide thing, as the friend I might go railfanning with works as a manager for the school bus fleet for another city, and they have off too.

  • Sweet. We have quie a few days a month off for things like that....quite a lot of useless vacations (Useless in the reasns, that is)

  • Hey guys, sorry I am late, I have had a LONG WEEK, and just ended it by doing a TON of weekend HW...

I have had 4 tests, 1 speech and a wrestling unit in PE class, as well as 7:00 Jazz Band every morning.... I am falling asleep at the keyboard[|)]

Matthew, I did spell that thing wrong- I will fix that....[B)]

I found this site... from ads in trians mag and model railroader... then joined.... then noticed quite a few teens on here, but no "teen place"..... started a "teen place".... you all came, and made it work.... and here we are!

Well, I shoud have a fun day tomorow...

My family has a small trailer that we camp in, and tomorow my dad and I are takinng it out to rural, western Illinois for winter storage... And the storage place is HALF A MILE FROM THE ROCHELLE TRAIN PARK!!! [^][^][:D][:D][:D][:D] So, I shall railfan in one of the busyiest places around (10 trains per hour!!!)

Have any of you been to the train park?

    Have a great weekend guys!!!!!
  • Hey guys - adult here - I don't mean to butt in but I noticed yesterday you were talking about careers. All my life I wanted to be a railroader, but it wasn't to be. Instead I fell into aviation and found it to be the ideal job. Running a train would be cool, but railroaders are really married to the job. There is just no time off. As a pilot I have every other week off. I have fun at work (I can railfan from the cockpit) and I have plenty of time off to do anything I want. The money is pretty good, about the same as an engineer but I work only about 5 1/2 months each year. I can buy tickets to a ball game or Amtrak trip six months in the future and not worry about the job getting in the way. And Fostoria is pretty neat from 500 feet. Horseshoe, too. Just a suggestion to think about.

  • Hey you guys

My name's Wesley, I'm 17, and living in western Illinois. Just found this thread today; I've been on a couple month hiatus from posting thanks to school. Good to see a spot for us teens! Noah (and all that haven't come here yet) , I'd have to reccomend coming to western Illinois. It's a great time to be down here, with all the trees and the farm fields. I live about thirty miles west of Rochelle, and have been there quite a bit. Not only is being in Rochelle fun, but the drive there is just as great. Route 38 parallels the UP for about twenty miles between my town of Dixon and the town of Ashton, and now that the corn has been harvested, it's great for train chasing!
One thing I've been meaning to ask; I got a car last year, which really increases my ability to go railfanning, and have considered getting a scanner. Do any of you guys have them, and if so, how much do they cost, where can you find them, and what is your thoughts on them?
Lots to say, but I hope you all don't mind!

  • I went to Rochelle this summer. Saw about 10 trains in just over an hour, had lunch in the picnic shelter type thing, saw my first NS loco, a bunch of ex C&NW SD40-2s in UP Paint (I could tell by the bells) and bought a Kato SF bluebonnet SD40-2 in the gift shop for $50! Talk about the best thing I've got on vacation! I mean, the P2K FA1s I got in Jasper are good, but this cost a quarter as much!
If anyone is even thinking of going, DO IT! It's a wonderful place to go. Also, North Platte yard (AKA UP Bailey yard) is a great place, on UP's main mainline. Go onto one of the bridges, and watch the trains roll by...Yes, I went to a lot of places this summer. I visited 12 states and 9/10 provinces!
