Trackside with Erik and Mike, Volume 36 voting

I had to go with Mike's shot this time. Erik's forground was not clean enough for the low shot he made and the weeds detracked from his photo. Mike's was a clean, well focused photo with good depth of field. Other than that they are both good photo's that should bring about a close finish here in the voting.

I'm sorry. I didn't read your post until after I posted mine. I mean, they're okay locos.....they did their job. But they're all in scrap aren't they?? You don't have to answer this.

I went with Eric as it is a closer shot of the lead unit with more detail. Both are very good though.

Both photo's were very good, however Erik's was sharper so I went with his this time. Keep up the good work of showing very fine photo's too us.

Richard, No need to have taken it seriously. It was a joke, but yes they all did get scrapped. I like them, but not that seriously!

Well, being partial to the eastern carriers, it was a no brainer. The best thing about CSX's new paint scheme is that it fades to a very passable B&O blue, which is fine with me. HOWEVER-NO scheme out there now can touch the Valley's Cornell Red! As to the composition of the two photos I am a hopeless wedge shooter and that is that.[:p] cmdrflke for whom trailing shots are acceptable only if preceded by front views. Til next time PMBX -08 out

Now it's getting tough. Similar shots. Similar angles. Both shots have an old BN whiteface. Both shots have a BNSF heritage paint. Both shots have exhaust smoke showing some heavy pulling. Both shots have trees as a backdrop. Both shots have weeds in the foreground. Both shots have crew visible in the cabs.

I went with Erik's shot because it is a bit more in your face with the closer cropping. Had mike's angle been a bit more to the side and shown what the 3rd unit was... who know's. At this rate you need to add a 3rd voting button for tie score.

I voted for Erik's, but not because I liked his photo more. No I voted for Erik's because I liked the photo he did NOT submit- the "going away" shot of the same lashup. Now THAT was a great photo...you can see the differences in the heighth of the locomotives, you can see the things in a going away photo that just don't show up in a "train coming" photo. And the lighting on that shot is just short of stunning. Please do this at least once a month--maybe compete in "going away shots." Oh, and one other thing: What happened to the great concept of not telling us who shot which photo? I thought that was going to be the rule now? Thanks.

Sometimes the blind voting doesn't work in the context of the overall story. In this case, I shared my tale of our visit to Progressive Rail in Minnesota, and Erik spoke about his John Deere factory tour in Illinois. Had we listed the locations of the photos, it would have been too easy to guess who took which. That's why we opted against blind voting this time.
