Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 27: March 21, 2005

I prefer Mike's image. Erik's isn't bad either. I would suggest not being to descript in discussing the photo. Taking shots of a train making a set out or creeping along don't excite me...like shooting fish in a barrel. Getting the mainline at speed shot impresses me more.

Hope to see some images around and west of Flagstaff though!

I went with Eric's photo as it shows the engines working, I also liked the other one as it shows the railroaders working and an unusual consist.

I voted for Erik's because of the image of Power that it shows.

I voted for Mike because I thought the backround of snow made the pix more special. Where I am we are only see snow on the TV

All right!!! Another neck-to-neck contest. I had to go back and forth numerous times to decide. The colors in Mike's pix did it for me; but I will admit Eric's looks powerful; real brute force. But the angle didn't quite do it for me. Great job, guys.

I think the photo of the MOW crew should have been in the voting. It would have recieved mine for sure, just for the Human elements.
Same as the photo of train # 7. Although to a photographer, the buildings clutter the scene, to a modler, they impart intrest an scale to the composition.

PHOTOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING, WHICH I UNDERSTAND IS TO BE THE PRINCIPAL ASPECT OF ALL COMPARISONS IN THESE "CONTESTS", MIKE'S CHOICE OF SPEED AND APPERTURE SETTINGS HAVE PRODUCED THE MORE BALANCED PHOTO, WITH RESPECT TO THE SUBJECT.

Mike gets the nod this time, nothing like a work train being pulled by some old workhorses. Erik's isn't bad either with the BNSF GEs caught with a old ATSF workhorse between. Great shots and just keep it coming......

Sorry Mike, I had to vote for Erik's photo this time, although it was a tough choice. The BNSF locos just looked too cool with the diesel smoke bellowing out the stack!!! I did like Mike's though with the snow, the only thing was the lighting contrast appeared a little off, but it did look like an early morning shot.

I like Mike's image due to the background, mostly, but lighting is key, too. In Erik's shot, the train dominates the shot, and really could have been taken almost anywhere. Mike's shot gives a sense of "place." The lighting is gorgeus in Mike's shot as well.

For me, this week's contest was an easy choice, I thought Erik's photo captured the power of railroading and his capture of the end of the train was a nice touch. Mike's photo was pleasant but the lack of contrast between the plant growth and the empty cars I felt made the picture less desirable for my vote.

Mike, hats off! Beautiful shot! Everything in your shot says winner to me this week! Erik's shot is not a bad shot either, I do like the low angle. However, I am just taken by every element in Mike's. An added bonus is the ex-CNW on point. I am glad UP let the nose bell ring!

I had to go with Eric's photo. I'm going to be "starting" my first layout & beiing blessed with a basement that is 12 foot by 30 foot I am going to have a few differrent areas in it. The below grade aspect shows me what I need to do with the track when I do that area. I have been planning my layout for almost 2 years and I think I finally have a working foot print of what I want. I'll keep everyonoe posted iin the fall as to what is happening. Larry

Both are nice...but I voted for Mike's this week. Erik's had that nice loco consist and the exhaust, as well as being able to see towards the back of teh train, but Mike scored a few more points with his neat loco consist, as well as the fact you sually don't see Conrail and Up together. Add teh special train, the neat lighting, and the winter scenery, and he gets my vote again.

Meself voted for Mike ast the licht frae the sun creates a stronger image. Eric's wast guid but the licht'en was wee bit aff. I think a polarizer would hae enhanced it wee bit more.
