Adding sound to a 9 pin equipped locomotive

  • Hello! I am considering getting an Athearn model that comes with an 8 pin/ 9 pin dcc socket. I was wondering if it would be feasible to simply plug in a sound decoder and speaker to achieve sound. I don’t want to rip apart wiring or try to hardwire a decoder so please please please, don’t suggest it. I am not an electrically minded person. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

  • Yes, that's the way it's been done for at least 15 years. If the engine has a receptacle, no reason to rip anything out, just plug in the decoder and find room for a speaker and enclosure.
