Last time, I voted for Mikes's picture, because I thought it was a better shot.
But I voted for Erik's this time. You could see it was moving.

I liked Bergie's shot. As has been mentioned, there is more of a sense of motion - the foundation of a pacing shot.

Not around Milwaukeeland, I still see plenty of CP SD40-2s, UP SD40-2s too when I can find them -- and take pictures of them!!! But UP is much more elusive, for me at least... I miss the C&NW!!!

I did not have to sleep on this one thanks guys. With UP 6506 the need for speed, so release the brake, its doing 60 in the wind and clear blue sky got my vote. Say Erik and Mike did either see that bug 6506 just hit neither did the bug.

If we are talking pacing shots, which we are, we have to ignore lighting, weather conditions, etc (it is November after all), and look at it from the action perspective-CPRail has my vote for sure. It gives perfect representation of speed, dare I say an impression of litheness, like that of a running veteran wild animal that's been through the wars, but still charging along. Way to go Erik! Nice shot on Mike's part, too, though, considering the photographic challenges, just a bit too perfect. Keep safe!

I am partial to spartan cab loco's, and one of my favorites has always been the SD40-2. The loco appears to be working harder, and Yewpee just does't do anything for me anymore.

Everything I read likes Mike's for all the reasons I liked Erik's. I thought the shadows made it more dramatic. UP looke a little over-lite. I guess it's all in what you're looking for.

I picked Mike's shot as it was clear and showed good detail. one good point on Eriks shot was "wheels at the rail" level that silhouetted light underneath the unit.

Mike's shot is a little better because the sky isn't overexposed that much. Erik's shot would have benefited from a graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky and lighten the train. I prefer train shots that show speed to be done with time exposure vs. panning (read pacing on this forum I think that is the same?) to show action. I good neutral density filter will yield awesome results and keep the rest in focus. I think the panning in these shots just look blurry and distracting.

Without addressing the photographic merits, it surely is clear to me that EMD does Industrial Design, while GE just builds a locomotive. The SD40 may be the best looking loco this side of a GP7/9. The GE looks like lumps and bumps were added randomly. We have wandered far from the good design of a "F" unit -- which also has a wide cab!
