Rotary 7221 gets a new Home In Roseville CA

  • This unit was built prior to 1920 and was converted to Diesel in the late 1958 timeframe.  It has not been used for many years and the Union Pacific as three active rotary units with B unit power here in Roseville.  They are used about every 10 years now with the snow levels not being so great in recent times.

A crowd was on hand and I uploaded a few of the 300 plus pictures showing the unit in the air from the track to a static track position near the 2252, an old 4-6-0 used on the Roseville Fire Train for many years.

  • I drove by them doing this this morning, but couldn't stop, because we were on our way to Niles Depot for the day. Funny enough, I saw the plow in the old ramp area just next to that spot Friday and mistook it for the newly rebuilt unit. Do you know, did they paint the unit here in Roseville or was it sent out? Also, what was the UP Jordan Spreader that was on the adjacent track? It was not a SPMW unit nor did it look anything like the Donner spreaders.
  • It was painted in Roseville over the past few months from what I understand. The Jordan spreader was moved over the same time as the rotary but I have no information on it.
