How can you tell an EMD from a GE. ??? And why must they looks so much the same?? is that an industry standard.
Easiest way I find is the radiators. GE has wide radiators atop the long hood; makes me think of a Hammer Head Shark. EMD have radiators halfway along the long hood in a V shape up and out from the body. Also, check the small lettering under the number below the cab window on many roads which tells the road's model number classification. Then there is also the builder's plate which is too small to read especially when flying by at 30 or more miles per hour. Those more into deciphering the differences can cite cab and windshield differences, location of fuel tanks, batter boxes, water tanks, shape of hood, etc. But quick glance opportunities rely on the radiators.
