Teen Railfan Place :: Summer 2010

  • Link to ye olde place.

Here's some Boston transit action. Retrieving a phone at Park Street on the Red Line. Right beneath the 3rd rail too!

Chirp! It's a good thing the E line runs so infrequently because I was sitting here for a while waiting for the bird to be in the right place! Science Park on the Green Line.

  • Hey guys, I haven't been on here in forever, but the UP is having a contest on where to send their steam engines next year! Click on the location you want to win as your hometown and follow the instructions to vote! I voted Joliet, we have a historic depot and a nice new intermodal yard to hold 3985 in!

  • Well i finally found some time to catch up on pictures from the last month or two. Football has been keeping me busy & so forth being tired a lot i haven't had much time to work on pics. We go back to August 23rd in Neenah I see a SB departing so i get to Kampo rd & it happens to be 576 & it has a new 2100 unit trailing NB he set out at 251 so i got him again at Cecil St he blocked the main so i had to do a wrong side shot of 199 We go back to September 1st now September 1st was my last day of vacation & i decided to enjoy it well so i decided to go to my favorite spot, Weyauwega. First up is the NB 415 from Green Bay, i decided only to shoot the rear unit for some reason Next up was 199 Then the catch of the day then another good catch Then i decided to give these guys a chase up to Amherst & i had heard that the NB was gonna change crews at Oakland rd outside of Waupaca, i haven't shot here yet so i figured give it a try. Then i get a surprise at Amherst The Meet I did go into Sheridan & tried shooting them at one of the back roads & this is what i got I Then headed west to Stevens Point just to see if anything was lined up & the SB 416 with the same power i saw earlier left which i wont post since you already saw the power. Now we go to September 26th I had been given a heads up of a NB coal train which i want to get as much as possible before they shift over to UP & wont be on the Neenah Sub anymore so while im out i get a Few surprises. SB 346 Mid Trains Once they were locked in the siding the NB 703 comes up the Hill The DPU Thats all i have, hopefully in the next few weeks i will be able to get out more.

  • Just dropping in to inform those who may have not seen it yet, but there was a fairly nasty wreck on the former DM&IR near Highland, north of Two Harbors a few days ago. Head on collision between a NB empty and a SB load of pellets. Five injured, two released soon after, two other remain in the hospital.

That wreck does look pretty nasty, Alex. Any idea how long it took CP to clean up the mess?

Wreck occurred Thursday night, and they got 1 track open Monday afternoon.

  • Congrats on being the reader submission for this edition Tyler - it's a cool shot!

Going back a little ways in the discussion - I agree with your assessment of Jack London Square, Tyler. From a train perspective it was neat, but when I was there it really didn't seem like any sort of a happening commercial district like they make it sound. There weren't many people around even when I was there back in 2007. We did catch a flurry of train activity when we were there though, including a rolling meet (well, really more an overtaking) of a BNSF freight and a commuter train on the street running:

It's the only place I've ever been able to catch something like that.

Oh, and am I the only one that noticed the new Trackside with Trains.com? Cool

I only noticed today when I saw the newsletter with a familiar photo thumbnail... Mischief

  • Geez, Alex, I'm with Tyler on this one...

  • I drove out this morning to try and have a look. The place was surrounded with police, there was no way anyone was getting near the wreck.

Ended up seeing a few CP detours over CN, but couldn't shoot them. Shot some ordinary CN stuff at Coteau. Hopefully tomorrow I'll hear something on the scanner and I'll get at least one shot of CP ridin' CN rails.

  • You know, those single train accidents where cars end up twisted, covered in mud, and piled five or six high really make me wonder.... Just think of how terrifying that would be to watch! Indifferent

  • One of the uglier derailments I've seen in a while just happened 25 minutes from my house!

Cleanup will take the whole weekend, I've already seen 2 detours over CN this afternoon.

  • Tyler, I forget what it is, but I know it's not that. In diesel mode, it will have 4200 hp (two 2100 hp Cummins prime movers), and something higher in electric mode. But the 4 is for four axles.
The ALP-46 has 7100 hp, so I know that's not what the numbers mean...

Alex, yeah, that original scheme was FUGLY! If they do use the design similar to what's currently on 4500 (hard to tell, since that's a combination of NJT, AMT, and Bombardier, so it is possible that they will use what's in the artists rendition...), than that will look hot with the Multilevels.

From what I've heard, 4501 will come over in March and go to Pueblo. 4500 will come in April to NJT. And then 1350 will go to AMT in May. Hopefully, we'll see them in service by the end of 2011, if all goes well.
I hope they're getting they're money's worth out of this...
Many people are extremely pessimistic that this will fail, but I have full confidence in Bombardier. All the Comets were nearly flawless, and the ALP-46s (and A's) and Multilevels had minimal teething problems. Yes, there will be bugs, but they will be ironed out before ARC is set to be completed in 2018.

Oh speaking of ARC, I really hope that Governor Christie doesn't screw the state over by killing ARC/THE Tunnel. It is possible that this 30 day suspension of work will cause us to lose our $3 billion in federal funding. This is the largest transportation project in decades, and it has taken YEARS to get this thing off the ground, and 30 days could potentially kill it all. If it's not built, down the road in 20 years, the state will be in absolute RUINS, and it will be nearly impossible to reverse it.

  • Hey I'm just happy that the AMT scheme is normal, not like the weird paint in the original promotional drawings/artist rendition.

Also you won't be seeing stuff come out all that fast, this thing still needs to pass FRA testing in Pueblo, CO first. Then we'll find out if they were really worth $12 million each...

So this week is Innotrans in Berlin, Germany. It is the world's largest transportation festival/show/convention, whatever you want to call it. Making it's debut, is the Bombardier ALP-45DP (American Locomotive Passenger, 4 axles, something involving a 5, Dual Power). Here is NJT 4500 on display. This is not the real paint, it is just a bunch of fancy stickers placed over the real NJT paint. Hopefully, we'll be seeing 4500, 4501, and AMT 1350 arriving on the East Coast by the end of the year.
    Note- photo not mine:

    4500 HP maybe?
