Teen Railfan Place :: Summer 2010

  • I'm baaaaack...

FINALLY got my computer back! Which means I'm back on the forums for good. And that also means...

I finally have something to share!

Railfanning by the Shore: August 4, 2010

Photos are coming later. There is, however, a small sampling in the video. They're not the best (a lot of high sun that day), but they're decent. I've made my favorite one my avatar, which the new forum actually let me set (on the old one, I'd get an error message every time I tried to create an avatar).

    Enjoy!

  • JOE IS BACK! HUZZAH! NJT is looking nice, as usual!

    ----------------------------------

I just returned from San Francisco and Yosemite. Rather than post every photo of the many I shot of the cable cars and F Market Line, here's a link to my Flickr Set from the trip. Many of the photos in it are train-related. And I hope you enjoy the rest even without trains!

Videos from the trip - the cable cars, riding the cable car at night, the F Market Line at night, the same line by day, the modern MUNI subway, and Amtrak street running in Jack London Square (!) - will be edited and uploaded over the coming weeks.

  • Ya, the CSX still does have SD40 leaders.

    Good paint too.

    And in pairs.

    G]

    Yeah.

    It happened.

I can now die in peace after shooting a former Western Maryland SD40, now the 84 series class unit, leading with a fellow 83 series trailing. That GE RC unit is bound for retirement as well.

  • Seems quiet around here lately - a result of everybody going back to school I suppose. I feel like I've ended up with the opposite - now that I'm back at college and not working a job 50+ hours a week, I feel like I have a lot more time, even with class and homework.

    Neat video, Joe!

Nice stuff from the San Fran area, Tyler. I have relatives who live out there so I get that way every few years, but I've still never made it to Yosemite. One of these years I really do need to go, as photos like yours always make it seem so gorgeous.

Neat catch indeed, and sweet lighting too Alec! I wish CSX stuff like that could be found a little closer to our area on a regular basis.

  • All the videos are edited, I just need to set my computer up to process and upload them at night. Here's another photo. While driving through the Central Valley, I spotted (and photographed through the car window) my first Warbonnet! This is unpatched #680.

That's a pretty nice looking Warbonnet too! Nice catch!

  • Excellent stuff guys!

If I ever get the chance, I'd definately go to Jack London Square. Looks like a really amazing place.

It wasn't quite as amazing as I thought it would be. The economic recession has really killed the area - many of the tourist attractions were closed - so there were very few people on the streets. The trains were pretty cool, but there wasn't enough traffic to make it really exciting. I did see some pretty dumb pedestrians though.

    Here's the video:

    The modern MUNI line:

And the historic F Market Line:

Cable cars will be coming soon.

  • So I made it out to Netcong today to catch 877, and I tried to upload it to Youtube, my internet went all screwy on me again. I'll try again later...

  • Sorry for the double post...

So anyways, I made it out to Netcong to catch 877. I had originally planned to catch it at Mount Arlington, but I got there as it was supposed to arrived, so I just kept going and I beat it to Netcong. When I got there, they made an automated announcement that the train was eleven minutes late, so I really COULD have made it at Mount Arlington. Oh well, I had to go to Netcong anyway.

Could not have asked for a more beautiful day:

So this week is Innotrans in Berlin, Germany. It is the world's largest transportation festival/show/convention, whatever you want to call it. Making it's debut, is the Bombardier ALP-45DP (American Locomotive Passenger, 4 axles, something involving a 5, Dual Power). Here is NJT 4500 on display. This is not the real paint, it is just a bunch of fancy stickers placed over the real NJT paint. Hopefully, we'll be seeing 4500, 4501, and AMT 1350 arriving on the East Coast by the end of the year.
    Note- photo not mine:

    4500 HP maybe?

  • Hey I'm just happy that the AMT scheme is normal, not like the weird paint in the original promotional drawings/artist rendition.

Also you won't be seeing stuff come out all that fast, this thing still needs to pass FRA testing in Pueblo, CO first. Then we'll find out if they were really worth $12 million each...

    Alex

  • Tyler, I forget what it is, but I know it's not that. In diesel mode, it will have 4200 hp (two 2100 hp Cummins prime movers), and something higher in electric mode. But the 4 is for four axles.
The ALP-46 has 7100 hp, so I know that's not what the numbers mean...

Alex, yeah, that original scheme was FUGLY! If they do use the design similar to what's currently on 4500 (hard to tell, since that's a combination of NJT, AMT, and Bombardier, so it is possible that they will use what's in the artists rendition...), than that will look hot with the Multilevels.

From what I've heard, 4501 will come over in March and go to Pueblo. 4500 will come in April to NJT. And then 1350 will go to AMT in May. Hopefully, we'll see them in service by the end of 2011, if all goes well.
I hope they're getting they're money's worth out of this...
Many people are extremely pessimistic that this will fail, but I have full confidence in Bombardier. All the Comets were nearly flawless, and the ALP-46s (and A's) and Multilevels had minimal teething problems. Yes, there will be bugs, but they will be ironed out before ARC is set to be completed in 2018.

Oh speaking of ARC, I really hope that Governor Christie doesn't screw the state over by killing ARC/THE Tunnel. It is possible that this 30 day suspension of work will cause us to lose our $3 billion in federal funding. This is the largest transportation project in decades, and it has taken YEARS to get this thing off the ground, and 30 days could potentially kill it all. If it's not built, down the road in 20 years, the state will be in absolute RUINS, and it will be nearly impossible to reverse it.

  • One of the uglier derailments I've seen in a while just happened 25 minutes from my house!

Cleanup will take the whole weekend, I've already seen 2 detours over CN this afternoon.

    Alex

  • You know, those single train accidents where cars end up twisted, covered in mud, and piled five or six high really make me wonder.... Just think of how terrifying that would be to watch! Indifferent
