Teen Railfan Place - Summer 2009

AYSE (Pan Am Railways train from Ayer, MA, to Selkirk, NY, as CSX Q427 between Barbers Jct, MA, and Selkirk) broke today!

Because it had GEs! If it was EMD powered, it would've had no problem!Big Smile
I really like how the light comes through the clouds in the second photo

  • AYSE (Pan Am Railways train from Ayer, MA, to Selkirk, NY, as CSX Q427 between Barbers Jct, MA, and Selkirk) broke today!

I came across it at Barbers, part of Worcester, blue-flagged with the nose door open and a CSX maintanence truck and a crew van next to it. As I was walking past, the crew started up the units. Boy did those GE prime movers sound good! Power today was a pair of GE ES44AC units, with #705 leading.

  • Train Festival in Owosso was commonly referered to as Trainfest for short by many people. Either way, everyone here understands what event I was talking about.

I don't want to have to deal with you anymore, so the post has been deleted.

    Alex

  • I think you are referring to Train Festival in Owosso, NOT Trainfest(r) in Milwaukee

Trainfest is a registered trademark of the WI Southeastern Division, Inc, NMRA

  • Here is part one of my recent trips report.

Now onto Michigan City where a westbound South Shore train comes around the tight curves in the middle of 11th Street. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1739089

The same train departs the station and continues down the street running, and that concludes the Indiana part of the trip report.

I'll end it here with some sad news about the Michigan City street running I just had in the last two photos. Plans are to have it replaced before positive train control becomes mandatory on all passenger rails in 2015. They plan on building a new double track high speed line on the south side of 11th Street, which is the opposite side of the tracks in the photos I just posted from there. The exact timeline on when the street running will end hasn't been determined yet, but it'll be anytime from maybe 2012 until the end of 2014, depending on funding. Hopefully it gets delayed as long as possible, the more time to photograph this historic trackage, the better. If you want to see the street running in Michigan City, it would be wise to do it sooner rather than later, as the end of it is in sight.

An article of the news out of Michigan City can be found here. http://chestertontribune.com/Northwest%20Indiana/6191%20new_weekend_south_shore_schedule.htm

  • Unfortunatly none of my pics will be up soon. still w/out a computer.

i took about 75 in rochelle saturday & seen 27 trains. i have more that need to be done, thankfully i can still check this from school & my parents laptop.

  • Iowa Interstate is getting two more GEVOs soon. It sounds like bad news, but there is a catch. One is supposed to be painted in a Rock Island heritage scheme! I can't wait to see what it is going to look like when it is finished!

I'll have Hesston and various other photos up soon.

  • Dang, that was fast! And correct!

When I read the theme, I was thinking of things I could use. Then, I remembered the announcement of "When getting off the train, please watch the gap" at high-level stations. Although the bridge plates are rarely actually used, I can get a picture of the box that it is in, which is clearly marked "Bridge Plate." Hopefully, with some good timing, I'll be able to get there for the shot just as a train arrives, since a picture of the black box is nothing special...

Until today, I never actually realized how loud F40s are! While we were in Pt. Pleasant tonight, 4122 (along with two CIIIs, three CIIMs, and 5000 (CIII cab) trailing) pulled in across the street. Even while idling, this thing was freaking loud! And then when it accelerates, forget it. Probably especially loud because of the Caterpillar HEP generator, in addition to the prime mover.

  • Bridge plates!

  • Nice shots everyone!

Robby, I really like that patched BNSF unit! I love it every time a GP40-2 still in CR paint rolls by on H-02...

Speaking of H-02, I have a couple sightings from this week. No photos, just a report (why would I bring a camera to school, when there's only a chance of catching anything from the bus...)
First, Tuesday afternoon, just before 3, I caught NS H-02, the Dover Drill, with the 3010 heading west through Lake Hopatcong.
Then, Wednesday morning, I caught a 5 car Comet V consist eastbound at Mt. Arlington with what I think was 6081 leading (couldn't tell exactly what the number was, more on this later). GP40PH-2B 4207 was shoving on the rear.
That afternoon, at around 3:30, I caught a WB at the crossing in Netcong. I couldn't see the entire consist as it was behind the treeline, but I know 6081 (CV cab) was trailing, so I'm assuming it was the same set from that morning.
Then, 5:30p Wednesday, I caught another WB at Netcong. Again, I couldn't see the consist behind the treeline, but I know that 6703, a Metro-North Comet V Cab, was trailing. (NJT and M-N West-of-Hudson equipment is pooled on the Hoboken Divison)

Sometime next week, I want to go to Mount Arlington to grab some shots for the Trains Magazine photo contest. Although the theme is "Bridging the Gap," I'm going for something very different, instead of the billions of trains-crossing-a-bridge shots that will be entered. If you want a hint, I'll say that Mt. Arlington is a high level platformed station. If you know anything about passenger/commuter stuff, you may know what I'm talking about... I'll give details when I get the photos, but its a secret for now...

  •  Still kind of quiet up here(or my luck is just going in the tank), but I've manged to catch some nice shots. First up, SP 6220(listed as UP 6220)

Next up, a CP ES44AC pulls a grain train into Stinson Yard. This unit worked solo on this train.

Next up, a duo of BNSF H1 Dash 9s. I caught another one earlier this week as part of an ultra cool consist, and I'll have that posted tomorrow. But, for now, here's 1072 and 1110.

And then, as much as I never thought I'd ever say this about a CN unit. Here's the catch of the last few weeks. A CN Dash 8 sporting the CN North America paint scheme.

  • Kinda quiet here lately,

Well im typing this at school where im in a class where i get to research my own topic & do projects on them. so ya itsk inda project related. but my computer at home went again. i learned that something is shortening the power supply so its nothing with the hard drvie so i wont lose anything. but we are getting a new computer so it will be nice.

saturday im planning a trip to rochelle.

hopefully it will be a good one.

  • Nice photos everyone! I may be heading over to the Hesston Steam Museum in Indiana for a day this weekend. They'll be pulling out most of their operatable steam engines, including their Shay engine. I guess it coukdn'tbe more appropriate to close out the summer with more steam after the extensive 4449 and Trainfestival 2009 coverage!

This isn't my photo, but check out BNSF's latest paint job! http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1737330

Now that's what you call a sweet patch job! From what I've read, BNSF has purchased at least five former GMTX GP38-2s, at least four in Conrail paint like that one, and one in CSX MOW orange paint. Hopefully the rest also emerge with similar patch jobs, and hopefully they got a decent amount of them.

  • Here's a bunch of photos from my railfanning adventures (well, taking photos of my commute with a few minor detours! Smile,Wink, & Grin) in Boston... I've been putting off sorting through and uploading these for a while, and I'm still not done yet. Captions appear above the photos.

    Zoom! Green Line departs Arlington.

    Boston Engine Terminal.

With the Boston Skyline in the background (that's the state capitol with the gold dome), a Red Line train crosses the Longfellow Bridge. This fog is nothing - on a bad day it's impossible to see much of the city from here.

    Orange Line at Downtown Crossing.

Blue Line departs State Street. Note the third rail shoes AND folded pantographs on the roof!

Two Blue Line trains at Aquarium.

    Orange Line at North Station.

Preserved Boston Electric Railway (BERy) car at Boylston Street Station.

On a nicer day, the Red Line again crosses the Longfellow Bridge.

The reason I've been commuting - my volunteer post at the Museum of Science! The museum is pretty railroad-heavy. From the front door, you can see the Green Line crossing the Lechmere Viaduct, the commuter rail running over the twin ex-B&M lift bridges at North Station, and from the back door you can see the Red Line on the Longfellow Bridge. There also used to be a B&M steam locomotive on display out back, which got moved for space for an acess road when the Mugar Omni Theater was built.

Cab ride in an interurban? Not quite...just the Blue Line doing 40 under catanary, as viewed through the railfan's window!

Waiting for someone to pick me up after commuting home, an inbound MBTA train departs Westborough Station.

    I also have three videos.

MBTA Marathon Part 1 (all lines plus commuter rail)

MBTA Marathon Part 2 (all lines plus commuter rail

Joyriding the Blue Line (duh, just the Blue Line, but plenty of cab ride footage!)

    Enjoy!

BTW, hello from (currently) sunny Platteville, WI. I moved into my dorm today at UW-Platteville, which will be my primary residence for the next 9 months or so. I'm now conveniently much closer to the ICE along with some other neat railroad locations. I just need to find some time (and some gas money) to go exploring...

    Noah

Hey there Noah! (Yeah guys I know: I am NOT a teen -- far from it -- but I like to look at good train pictures, OK?), glad to see you have begun this new stage in life.  Enjoy college, and don't overlook the fact that college libraries often have some interesting resources regarding trains, including map collections.

Platteville is in a very pretty part of the state of Wisconsin.

If you get the chance I highly recommend the short drive over to Dubuque Iowa, tons of stuff to explore there.  Some dramatic photo opportunities for the BNSF at Wyalusing State Park more or less north and west of you.  And two interesting railroad museums nearby (no moving trains though): Mineral Point to your north and east, with a really old Milwaukee Road depot as the centerpiece, and Fennimore to the north and west, site of the Chicago & North Western narrow gauge.  They have a preserved 3' gauge steam locomotive identical to what the CNW used, and the depot has artifacts.

And I assume you've noticed that Rochelle IL is closer to Platteville than your home is!
