Teen Railfan Place - Summer 2009

  • Ok, I caught something so rare and so unusual that I will post it before I post my photos from Porter and Franklin Park of 4449. This catch is much rarer than even those photos. Take a look at these!

Nope, you are not seeing things either! We have not one SDP40 in 2009, but TWO SDP40s in 2009! I have no clue what they're doing up here, but I'm sure glad I went by Homewood today! Today's catch may very well end up being catch of the year, just flat out unbelievable.

Trust me, my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw those.

  •  Noah, it seems that once again we saw the same train.

Just like the time I videotaped that DME manifest and you got a photograph of it somewhere else. I find it funny that this seems to happen every time I venture south :P

  • well guys i think i ran into a bad scenario, few days ago we had bad thunderstorms & our power went out & the surge protector didnt do its job & we believe our tower is fried. i hope i didnt lose everything, i had alot of stuff, thankfully flickr & photobucket got the train pics. some on facebook along with my sports ones. but my all time locomotive list might be gone. i was gonna back everything up on a cd last week but it wouldnt work. thankfully i have my phone for internet. which im typing this on now.
  • Hey Robby, whats up......

And no, you never gave the WC's back, so Im keeping this one! LOL!

Yes, Im very distraught seeing those CSX catches, the lead engine in the second picture is an SD50(possibly an SD50-2) not an SD60. I like CSX too much, I was down there shooting great CSX stuff and still get mad when I see them come by here and dont see them...

Robby, if those SDP40's are heading to EMD, then they would probably use the BN to get there, yes? If you got any intel down there when they leave, let me know ASAP, Im an SD40 nut, and an SDP40 is awesome, not to mention the 1320's paint!

Sorry to hear that Brent, hopefully you can salvage something.

  • Alec (AKA SD38-2 stealer!), I'm not sure when those SDP40s are going to be leaving, I've been trying to find out when they're going to be leaving for days now, but have had no success. I would love to catch those again.

Somehow I knew when Douglas messaged me saying 659 was up there that you got it, and I was right! Of course, EJ&Es do brighten the scene up pretty well with their bright orange paint. I do still want that engine, 674, and the rest of the Js back, as well as the railroad itself!

I wish I could say I stole the WCs but they're all in the deadline at Homewood, along with all kinds of CN, BCOL,GTW and IC SD40-2s, as well as all kinds of good EMDs, MLWs and ALCOs.

The 659 was moved out the the Twin Ports when 669 came in. 659 of course found its way on the Twin Cities Transfer. 659's helper link box has been put on 665, ugh! 665 will rarely ever lead with the box on it. 662 and 666 are paired up as well, and 660 has been on A404 recently. 672 has been working the GTW between RailPort and Corwith, 670, 671 and 673 are still on the IC. All other Js are working on home rails still.

I will have to take a look inside them. While "servicing" them of course.

  •  Actually, 659 led a fair amount even with the helper box. Nice to know that 669 is up here, though. Now if I can just grab that and 666, I'll have everything photo'd as far as the Js go.

  • Ya, I told Douglas about it, and then ofcourse he goes to steal all of the glory everywhere....

Ya, when I went down to Lafayette I went over Homewood and caught a glimpse of corpses lying everywhere, man that place is more of a graveyard now than ever!

  • Oh yeah Homewood is a graveyard, it has been since the WC SD45s were scarpped. Right now, there are IC, GTW, BCOL and WC SD40-2s, WC GP40s, EJ&E 650, all kinds of MLWs and ALCOs, NBEC SD40s, SD50Fs, C40-8Ms and just about anything you could imagine there. Unfortunatly CN police are making it harder and harder to shoot anything there, plus the fence also really hampers everything.

Another thing Alec, the EJ&E archive would probably find those photos of 659 quite valuable seeing it's the first time a J has visited the Twin Cities. They're looking for photos of EJ&Es wandering to keep track of where they are, but very few have been added. The archive photo gallery can be found here. http://www.ejearchive.com/lastdays/main.php

All photos uploaded to the gallery will eventually be moved to the main archive site, so any photos of EJ&E engines on the DM&IR, DWP, WC etc can be uploaded. Just keep it EJ&E related!

CN is starting to remove the MOW tracks and stub tracks at Joliet Yard in preparation for the construction of the new run-through tracks which will enable hot CN intermodal trains to run through at 45MPH.

  •  One I shot from my friends layout in Stevens Point...He is modeling the area in Point.....I laid the camera on the table and got this pretty neat looking view

  •  That's no layout! That's the real deal!

  •  It's called a tilt/shift photoshop technique if I'm remember right. Pretty easy to do if you have the right software. If you stop and look at it it's really not correct anyway for a photo taken at a low depth of field like a lot of model railroad shots are. If you were using a really, really low depth of field to get a blurry top and bottom, there's no way the locomotives in the foreground and the depot in the background could be in focus at the same time like that. It's still an interesting effect, though I've seen it done much better with more scenic landscape type shots.

  • Two pretty neat catches in the past couple days.

First was UP 1989, the DRGW leading Amtrak's California zephyr. The lighting was terrible to say the least for photos, so I'll post the videos  instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0IvDczahp0&feature=channel_page

Then the next day we have a almost perfectly untouched Chessie System SD18 in LaCrosse, IN! http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293802&nseq=1
