  • Tyler, nice panorama! That snow shower reminds me of last year when we had an inch or two of snow dumped on us in April. I'll need to find the pictures of that day.

BNSF, nice catch on the Snoot SD40-2!

Nice shots Noah! Sorry to steal your thunder, I was editing my post when you had posted your photos!

Well on Sunday I did some rail fanning. I had heard WSOR 702, a GP7, was at Point, so I headed down there.

Uck, it was a cloudy day. I hate cloudy days; they are no fun for pictures. But I guess the good thing about cloudy days is that it doesn't matter what side of the tracks you shoot from! When I got to Point I started to look around for the 702. I knew that it would probably head out on the A408, but knowing that I had a late start, and guessing that it probably had already left, so I sorta gave up. I had heard that a train is going to head out to Orchard to get some paper work, and I debated weather to get it or not, I decided just to head out that way, as that might be the only train I get. I started following this CN truck, and I found out that they had the papers for the crew, so I just followed them out to Orchard. I look across a field (Nice field shot I'll have to try once) and I saw that WSOR 702 trailing! When I got there I thought I would have time to set up my video camera, nope, they where ready to get rolling as soon as the conductor had their papers.

Yep, WSOR 702, a former ATSF GP7u rebuild was trailing.

Next stop was the Whiting mill. I found the commercial job working there with GTW 6222!

I took a wild guess that they would be heading down to Plover, so I staked out at that old GBW Bridge. Well sure enough they where heading down to Plover. Now why does the good power ALWAYS have to come on cloudy days?

Well I did a short chase down to Plover, but I don't have any real exciting shots, as the line isn't the most scenic thing in the world! But I'll post my shot of them at Plover.

Next stop was Wisconsin Rapids to see my luck with EJ&E 674. I knew that they where working the Whitehall sub, but I decided to check it out anyway. GTW 4909 was there, along with WC 1564, and a SD60F. To save room I won't post these roster shots. EJ&E 674 was working at Taylor WI, so I headed back to Wausau.

On the way to Point, I noticed at Weston WI that there was a Dash 9 and a MAC on the coal train. I thought the Dash 9 was weird, but I didn't stop. Well as I was coming home, I looked across a field and I saw that the BNSF power was ready to head out, with two CN units?! I headed over there and found a BNSF Dash 9, BNSF SD70MAC, CN SD75i, and a CN SD40u! Never have I seen 4 units on a coal train here, and two CN units, with an SD40u to boot! Why does all the good power come on cloudy days?! Grumpy

Well that Raps it up for 6/7/09.

  • Noah: I really like that ICE shot!

Jordan: Too bad about the weather. Nice catch with 702. MR just had an article about building one of those, and it looked pretty interesting. Might have to think about building one myself...

Yesterday, as we drove through Netcong, we caught an evening eastbound. Because of the construction (widening the road to help traffic and also fix the flooding problem) and the restricted speeds in the area, it took a while to clear the crossing. The consist was completely Alstom-built, with 3 Comet Vs and a PL42AC. The consist was: 6015, 6204, 6566, and 4032, the last of the PL42s, trailing. Just as we left the Shoprite parking lot, the signals activated, but we were gone before the train arrived. Also the first time I saw Transit Police. THEY DO EXIST!Tongue

Also, just heard a blast of a K5LA through Lake Hopatcong. Even though Transit restricts their horns, it still sounded pretty in-tune and loud from a mile or two away.

  • Nice shot from the dells.

ill be going there sometime soon. i got 2 tickets to noahs ark this summer so ill have to go watch trains when i go. idk what times are perfect from the riverwalk.

  • Nice catch on the 702 Jordan. It's interesting that it's coming back already. Last time Badger Mining got a WSOR unit they purchased it outright (I think) and kept it for a few years.

Brent, for the Wisconsin River Bridge my personal favorite angle is morning from the Riverwalk just off of the main road. There's a little scenic overlook spot that's perfect to sit and wait at. There are a couple of different angles, and in the summer the light is good from just after sunrise to about 10-11am. Example shots here and here

There is a decent angle in the afternoon from the other side of the bridge as well, though there's a couple of wires in the way that can sometimes get annoying. But it's still a decent shot, and the light is good from early afternoon all the way to sunset really. Examples here and here.

Bowman road (the S curve shot), is best in mid to late afternoon for a westbound train.

    Noah

  • Caught a WB arriving at Lake Hopatcong this morning, led by a PL42AC. I didn't catch any numbers because it was too far off. The only way I could tell it was a PL42 was because of the headlight/ditchlight arrangement.

  • Jordan, nice catch on the 207! What is the 207, GP9M? Not ure. Will have too look at it again.

NS sure has been busy... Not with trains though. I went to Lafayette for a teeth clening, and I saw somewhere to the tune of 11 various work trucks. From basic Silverado hi-railer's, to big duli boxy work trucks that carry spare wheels, and can evan lift up a locomotive/car to replace parts and wheels. Thay were heading all over the place, not just in a row. I wish thay were trains.Grumpy Then I would have something to shoot.

Don't feel bad about seeing good power on cloudy days. Whenever it is cloudy/rainy/cold, I will see lots of trains.... A nice day.............. Never a thing.

  • Ohh, How ignorant of me. The 207 is just a plain GP7.Dunce

  • Justin, actually it's one of the ex-ATSF GP7u locomotives...

Oh thanks for correcting me Ty. I never would have remembered that...

Here is a shot I got about 2 hours ago cumming home. Not spectacular, but I think it's ok.

    Again gloomy weather.Grumpy

  • It's a good grab shot, Justin, and something I'd be proud of a few years ago when I was just starting railroad photography. I mean, there's nothing in the way of the train, you're not on the wrong side of the tracks, and the sky isn't blown out! Heck, I'm still happy to get shots without those mentioned above! I'm convinced the Boston & Albany built Worcester Union Station on the wrong side of the tracks on PURPOSE so that all my photos would be backlit! Mischief

I spy three of those TCMX hoppers trailing behind... Does anyone have any idea what these things carry? I know they're owned by CIT Financial, but an extensive internet search turned up nothing about what they're used for...

  • Thanks for the kind words Ty. I had to chuckle at you saying that the B&A built the station on the wrong side. Sorry about that! Most of the shots I get are VERY spurr of the moment. Like Ohh there's the train let's pull off so I can get a shot of it! Once in a while I will have time to set up, but not too often.

  • Well, from what I can see Ty, those hopper's carry grain, cement, plastic pellets etc. You know the uge. I think that thay just aren't calindrical like most hopper's. Also the blue and gray paint scheem is fairly UGLY if you ask me.

  • This afternoon, I'm going down to Glen Gardener. I figured, since I (literally) have to drive past it on the way home, I'll stop at Washington Yard. Although the H74 and H02 will be long gone by then, if I'm lucky, there'll be a few cars sitting around. I don't know how deep into the yard I'll be able to go, but I'll go up until I see a "No Trespassing" sign. And I'll definately get pix.

  • A couple DM&IR notes. First, the EJ&Es are not going into ore service at this time. They are only going to Proctor for their 92 day inspections, not to be fitted with straight air unless CN changes their mind. Proctor still wants 6 EJ&Es for T-bird service even though it sounds like CN wants engines with 3000+ HP pulling the T-birds. Speaking of the T-birds, they should start running next week, so even if Procotr does get their request for the EJ&Es at Pokegama, they most likely won't be ready in time anyway. Sounds like CN wants SD40-3s to pull the T-birds at this point though.

Well, good there not going into ore scervice. But explain to me what a T-bird is. Is it a high priority intermodal for CN?
