Teen Railfan Place - Winter 2009 Thread Locked

  • Well, I just caught M-GALGYI on the CN in Lockport with two BN Exexutive SD70MACs and WC GP40 3004, not bad at all!

  • Quite common for switchers to spark actually.

  • Hi All! My mom has been sick, I haven't been on for a while obusilly. I have some pics my self but can't post them sadly. I like the SD70M! Also I'm going on an Amtrak trip this summer! I'm taking the CZ to Denver. Rocky Mtn. Ntl. Park is one of our highlites. I cant wait for it! That EJ&E switcher reflects the CN EJ&E merger with the towns... Firery. I bet that does set grass fires. Way to make friends with peple that already hate you. 6 day's of school left!

  • Well I went to Point today; it was about as dead as Brent was telling me yesterday.

WC 1565 was where GTW 4909 was yesterday. This is the best looking WC SW1500 out there. You can still see the shield on the nose, you can still read the number, and the shop forces (I think at Fondy) put on new "Wisconsin Central" lettering.

Who says SW1500s can't pull? Well WC 1566 pulled almost a full train by it's self, although it may be only empty pulp cars and a few other boxcars at the end, this is still an impressive site!

    Here's a roster shot of WC 1566.

On the scanner I heard something about a crew change at Orchard, so I headed down there, but it was too late, so I snagged this grab shot. Damm trees...Evil

Well earlier in the day (I didn't post the pic) a CN GP40-2W had headed down the Plover line. I didn't think much of it, I figured they where going to the Whiting Mill. As the day went on, I started to think, they don't switch the mill weekends, they must be at Plover. So we headed down to Plover to check it out. Plover is a small town that was on the GBW main, this is where their branch to Stevens Point split off. There is a small yard and a nice yard office there. They also have an old signal tower their too. I took some more shots of the area; Plover would be a nice town to model. Here are CN 9626 and GTW 6222 at the yard office, yes horribly lit shot, but oh well. Also, if anyone from the area is wondering why there are two locomotives at Plover; CN re-worked the trains. They now have a job that takes cars down to Plover via the Plover Sub, and then they have their own locomotive in Plover to work the Whitehall sub from Plover to Wisconsin Rapids.

Well as luck would have it, the crew comes out, and they board the locomotive to take her back to Point. Looks like I would get my bridge shot after all.

I'm fairly satisfied for today; looks like I'll be making more runs to Plover now. I'll also want to take some more pictures of the area in good light, for modeling purposes. Mischief

  • Both Franklin Park and Homewood went just as planned this weekend, perfectly. The lineup for Franklin Park was a CP GEVO, a BRC SD38-3, a BRC slug, CN E9 103 and two business cars a IHB GP40-2, a UP GEVO, UP 1995, a Metra MP36, a Metra cab car and two Amtrak coaches. Some trains that went by included a SOO GP38-2 with 4 intermodal cars and a caboose, and Metra F40C 611. Homewood had EJ&E SD38-2 670, just back from Iowa, repainted IC SD40-2 6123, the other CN E9, and again, two business cars. I also ended up catching CN E9 103 and the two business cars from Franklin Park in a CN manifest heading into the yard. EJ&E 672 was working the yard providing side by side J action. I also caught the Olympic engines (finally!) at Proviso Yard, as well as a Iowa Interstate SD38-2 leading two GEVOs. Quite a weekend for spectacular consists. Everything from F40Cs, to weird display lineups to side by side Js, not bad for 2009!

  • Here is a shot I got fanning a couple weekends ago. a SD70, -9, and another SD70 head up this Road Railer train. This is going westbound at Willamsport IN. I get these trains all the time. REALLY BORING. I'd take a manafest any day.  This is the first pic. I have taken of a train on my new Sony H20. I like it a lot.

  • Well, since I got so many photos to post, I figured I'd just put them into a slideshow and upload them to Youtube. If you want to see my photos from this weekend, click on this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HUYV5HPZro&feature=channel_page

I'd post them individually, but it would take up a ton of room and it would be nearly impossible to show everything.

By the way, watch it down by Fondy, looks like DM&IR 211 is working locals down that way. Maybe CN will press the remaining DM&IR SD38-2s into local service like they have with the J SD38-2s. It would be nice if they decided to assign one to the J!

  • Hi guys, nice stuff as usual. Well I had some free time so I've been slowly getting through my videos. Here are a few of the latest:

Yes, I'm sorry, there's snow in these shots, they are from January 31st!

  • CN will never assign a DMIR unit to the J, it would be stupid and redundant. Also, the #211 is the power for the train of quads that are getting new trucks.

  • Well I'm a little surprized this one slipped past me, EJ&E 660 was spotted on the old DWP at Virginia, MN. Another one gone, which means 660, 661, 662, 665, 666, 669, 670, 671, 672, 673 and 674 have all been reassigned. 650 is retired, and 654 and 659 are stored. It is unknown if 660 will join 662, 665 and 666 at Pokegama or be reassigned to the DM&IR.

I'm sure all of you up north are apprieciating CN for sending the Js up, but down here things are getting rough. Less than half of the Js are still down here, and rumor has it the 703 may be reassigned any day now. They are using a repainted IC GP38-2 in its place. Also, rumor has it the BC Rail may need some geeps to assist the WC GP38-2s already up there, so I have a bad feeling the 703 may end up in British Columbia.

  • I usually have a neck-warmer, gloves, hat. If I remember correctly, it was really, really cold and windy that day.

  • Since last time, great photos everyone!

Nothing new from me. Right now, I'm down the shore (it's the first day of summer!). As of now, I'm not planning on doing any railfanning. However, the're talking about it being chilly tomorrow, which means no laying on the beach all day :(  . If this is true, I might take a ride up to Bay Head or Point Pleasant Beach and do some railfanning (BH has the layover yard, but PPB has a high-level platform, so I might hit up both). If I go to PPB, I'll also check out the LHS that's next to the station.

If only the NJCL still extended to Seaside Heights... If it did, then right now, I would be looking ut my bedroom window, watching the trains (my shore house is 500 from Route 35 South, which used to the the ROW).

Also, I need some camera help. Right now, I'm using my family's HP Photosmart 720. It takes OK pictures, but there's not much I can do with it. The other day, I was looking through a Best Buy ad. They have a Nikon Coolpix L100 for $279. From reading the description, it looks like a decent camera. Does anyone know anything about this camera, or another similarly priced one. I would need to save up to get a camera (it wouldn't be for probably about a year or two), and I was just curious how much I would need for a decent camera. I don't want to go out and get a $700 camera, just something that's good and at a fair price. I don't know squat about cameras and photography, so any help is appreciated.
