  • I think as you said, it's not so much that GEVOs are hated as much as it is that people see them so often that they're bored with them. I'm nowhere near that, as last week, when my wife and I went through CP country, she went shopping and on the way back, snapped some shots of a few GEVOs. I loved the shots, seeing as I had never had the chance to document CP power, so I really didn't care what it was(althoug a 90MAC would have been sweet).

Personally, right now in the dead of winter, I'd take just about any power. The mainline here slows way down in the winter when Superior freezes over, leaving me with three locals every other week day, and the chances are about 40/60 that it comes through during daylight. I haven't seen coal move through here in three weeks(barring late night runs).

  • Thanks Robby, it took quite awhile but I added things to make it nearly 100% accurate except for weathering. I added a bottom grey fan, correct open/closed wheel bearings, stickers and decals like the real thing, in the same places, the mini orange strobe light on the hood (that Ive never seen active?)etc etc.

Noah, I only say hate because thats the strongest word out there to describe my thoughts of the engine. I mean, that engine is single handedly ruining railfanning for me, interest wise. They are neat machines, sure, but the overall design just makes them more boring and annoying that anything, and its all we have to look ahead to.I doubt I'll quit going out for now, although there will be many days where I feel that I wasted my time, etc.  From all of the news so far, this year will be pretty gruesome, many scrappers torches will be fired up, thats for sure.

  • You're probably going to see more and more stuff stored. Scrap prices have fallen more than half so I highly doubt you'll see much scrapped until scrap prices rise again.

  • Well, I suppose I'll post my picture from last weekend.

CN 8001 leads a NB out of Stevens Point.

This has mainly been the power on the 589 south (South bound out of Wausau), SD70M-2s, heck, we even had a SD70M-2 switcher in Wausau! I've seen that a few times, always seems that CN uses larger power for the switcher in the Winter Months. Usuaully we would get some great forigen power! But now that all goes to Alec as CN now does power swaps at Point.

  •  OH MY GOD I LOVE GEVO'S!

Haha easy boys. Max knows when he comes up here he gets too see all our great EMD power. And FM. and ALCo. :)

Maybe my problem has always been I've never understood how someone can hate a mechanical thing. Not like it or be unimpressed by it sure, maybe even be annoyed by seeing it, but to hate a mechanical thing so emphatically that it supposedly clouds one's ability to think rationally and causes depression seems a little over the top. I'm not an expert in psychology or anything though.

I can only speak for myself on this one, but since I lead a somewhat antisocial life where my high school friends have left town for new lives among other friends I have gained and lost, I have always had trains. Especially trains being my first and oldest interest I have ever had. So sometimes I get attached to them. And when one that I especially liked gets patched/repainted (Not just CNW, mind you), it feels like a lifelong friend of mine just died. And it becomes very difficult to confront what the unit has become. Then people start praising it and saying it's awesome etc or calling me lucky to have it and it just made me explode with anger, hence leading me to hate the unit.

But I'm a big sucker for nostalgia, so that's just me. Like my past also had the Blue Angels in it...and when they flew here last September for the first time in a decade, I even skipped class to watch them practice!

another thing I'd like to point out is...Why locomotives at all? I've always been a big fan of rolling stock as well. and that has changed little over this whole turn of events. ya know? Even as a kid, I loved the rush of long random freight trains passing me maybe even more than the motive power. I only used CNWs to identify that the train would be long, thus I loved seeing spartan cab powerr of theirs because I KNEW it meant a really long train was behind them.

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  •  Here's a little known fact. The only trains I find interesting on CP at this time of year are 400-403. They've all got the same power on, but there's usually 3 engines on the point, and it's not a unit train!

  • Well, I THOUGHT today was the last day for the EJ&E, but I am wrong again. Last day is OFFICIALLY Saturday, it should happen for real this time. I did run out the door and catch 650 leading today with no cars LHF heading west (???). That was a bit odd to say the least, but it's about time 650 shows up during the day. Tommorow, Friday and Saturday will all be dedicated solely to the J, I will railfan very little on any other lines if I even railfan any other lines at all. Even Sunday and days after that will be dedicated to the J cause CN isn't going to change things after a week, maybe not for a month or longer then that.

I know people are saying the J is dead on Sunday, but it isn't! The J is still alive till the last SD38-2 falls or gets repainted, and even after that don't even think I'll ever forget about the J. If it weren't for the J, I probably wouldn't have gotten into railfanning. Not only will the photos remain, but my birthday present from them (one of the main reasons I like them so much!) will remain.

I'll tell the story now, about 6 years ago I sent the J's corperate office a e-mail about winning the ISO 9002 and told them I was a huge fan of their. I expected them to just ignore the e-mail but they e-mailed me back wanting my address. I thought that this was a little bit strange for a railway to do. I told them, then a few weeks later, one day after my birthday I got a package from the EJ&E. Inside the package was a EJ&E hat, two EJ&E pins, a letter from the president of EJ&E and the big prize was a HO scale model of EJ&E 703. That's the day they became by far my favorite railway. The 703 model is very rarely ever used on my model railroad, as it means a heck of a lot to me. Now it means more than ever. In fact I usually leave the 703 locked away. Sunday I might just have to break it out.

    That's a neat story! A railfan's dream!

Nice photo Jordan; I still hate that type of loco nose though... Whistling It just looks strange...

  • Well, sounds like Saturday could have the potential to be a interesting one. EJ&E is starting to move all their rolling stock off the EJ&E as out of the freight cars, CN is only getting the flatcars. Everything else is being moved off the EJ&E onto the Gary Railway property. Also, the SW1200s assigned to the Gary Railway are being moved off the J as well. 703 is heading back up to Waukegan, 300, 301 and 460 will move to Gary Railway, 312 will move to Joliet. to replace 301 and 460 which are leaving Joliet for the final time. The J is also moving all their stuff such as MOW equipment out of Joliet, and they are leaving their offices in Joliet any day now, basically as soon as they can get everything out.

On Sunday, sounds like the J will begin moving CN's freight cars. They'll need to do it quick as the EJ&E's freight cars will be gone. It doesn't sound like this will be as smooth of a transition as CN hoped it would as they'll have 1-2 days to replace all the freight cars that USS is taking.

  •  Hi guys,

Can you make a "Teen Railfan Place - Winter 2009" edition of this thread and link back to this edition? As you may have noticed earlier this month with other big threads, I'm getting in the habit of archiving big editions and having new editions started so the forum performance isn't hindered by keeping these huge threads active for so long.

Thanks for understanding... I'm locking this now.

    Take care,
    Erik
