Question about IHC Carnival rides
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 25, 2006 9:40 PM
I have a few IHC Carnival rides I've put together and I'm really having problems with the motors they sell for them. I just finished the Falling Star and was very careful with the gears and made sure each end was exactly the same weight (seat w/people and a weighted counter balance)

Everything was fine until I attached the motor. It is SOOO loud! Anyone else use these before? Are there other motors that I can get for them that are quieter? Any help would be appreciated. [8D]

I don't know the shaft size but can measure it easy enough. They are DC which is great for variable speeds. Sure wish I didn't glue the gear to the shaft.......

I tried the cheap motor, then the deluxe motor, then made my own drive, then tried a pulse motor controller for slow speed. Nothing worked. The tolerances are so loose that any motion is jerky. Best left not moving.

Most of the noise is vibration from the motor being carried through the plastic bottom, which is acting like a drumhead. The only way to quieten down something like this is to modify the drive system so the motor is mounted away from the plastic bottom. A larger gearhead motor such as can be purchased from All Electronics would be much quieter than the stock motor that comes with these items; however, the cost and work involved in changing the drive system to accommodate a different motor would probably not be worthwhile.

I have some of IHC's rides too and agree , way too loud . I have been able to use this motor for the CAROUSEL . But I took my motor off a Christmas outdoor decoration . http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82090

Thanks for the replies.

Considering almost half my layout is a carnival I really need to make the rides operate. I saw the Micro Mark motor but wasn't sure how well it would fit in the ride. The motors at allelectronics.com look like I might get something to work. So unfortunately cost will not be allowed to be a factor. [:o)]

You might want to check MicroMark.com, item # 82722, Motorized Planetary Gearbox:

http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82722

You can stack the color-coded gears various ways, find the ideal speed, then buy a separate motor that matches the best RPM for each ride.

Rather than a latex rubber band you would probably want to look for a nitrile "O" ring.

For Example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nitrile-Rubber-O-Ring-Outside-Dia-44mm-Inside-Diameter-41mm-Thickness-1-5mm-/262686958507?epid=899641629&hash=item3d295ce3ab:g:eWoAAOSwB09YC9jy

OR

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5Pairs-Flexible-Rubber-O-Ring-Seal-Washer-Replacement-Black-40mm-x-1mm-/310973329558?epid=1638383819&hash=item4867747096:g:yO4AAOSwEIFZ0ezg

I have no idea what the actual measurements of the original "belt" supplied with the kit so you will have to make your own measurements.

Measure the diameter and the cross-section and go from there.

Good Luck, Ed

I remember putting these kits together many years ago, and they were such a pain. My local hobby shop at the time had a layout that went from the front of the shop window to the back and around a carnival... His rides were all quiet and animated, to this day I have no idea how he managed it.
