I feel stupid asking, but having never been in a Hobby Lobby, I need to.

Isn't Hobby Lobby just an arts & crafts store, not really carrying anything model railroading specific?

Hobby Lobby is primarily dead flowers and needle point, but most of them I've seen have some modeling stuff in them, maybe a row or two in the back of the store.

While it's true that Hobby Lobby usually carries very little actual model railroading stock, you can often find very useful stuff there ranging from paints, air brushes, matte medium, wire, dried flowers for tree armatures, xacto blades, foam core, and any number of other useful items. I've seen assortments of Woodland Scenics stuff in some.

I'm always happy to accompany the wife to a Hobby Lobby. I usually can find something worthwhile. Michael's is the same.

Regards

Ed

I purchased a Mantua 0-6-0 DCC ready at Hobby Lobby today for $27.00. My wife purchased a Bachman "G" scale train set for $127.00. Not just dried flowers anymore.

The local Hobby Lobby (Edmonton, Alberta) is just an overpriced hobby pawn shop that charges retail (new) prices on used and abused locomotives and cars. The owner and staff don't seem to be to strong on the finer points of customer service either (I have went there a number of times so it wasn't just an off day) . So I am surprised about how much better the Hobby Lobby store are in your locales.

The last time I was in there, they were having a half off sale on their
railroading stock. I loaded up on Woodland Scenics stuff. This was
last year, so I'll be paying them another visit.

claycts,
Thanks for bringing the coupon to our attention, but wouldn't you
know it, I'm out of printer ink... Dave

Hobby Lobby carries a good selection of Woodland Scenic stuff and a few other train related items. At one time they had Proto 1000 locos. They usually run a 50% off sale the week after Christmas on train items. I've bought a lot of structures and load up that week every year.

The Hobby Lobby store in Baytown Texas carries a lot of railroad related items in HO and N scale...they carry a lot of the woodland scenic landscaping materials and have recently included some nice proto 2000 locomotives and rolling stock....I always use the 50% off coupon at the store when it's available...I also find stuff for the modeler there from airbrushing tools to zip texturing supplies...it's a great store for the modeler if you know where to look....chuck

Thanks for the coupon! Hobby Lobby has better selection in our area than Michaels,
but they don't have coupons often.

The Hobby Lobby by me has had Boley vehicles on sale for $2.67 for a couple of months now. They only have a couple dozen left, but it's worth a try. I also got some Clasic Metal Works vehicles for less than $3.00 each, but they sold out quickly.

Hobby Lobby also sometimes marks down some of the Woodland Scenics stuff to really good prices.

My best find at Hobby Lobby was a Life Like proto 1000 freight set. Covered wagon, two box cars, hopper, caboose, marked down from 99.99 to 49.99. It had track, transformer and a railroad station. I purchased it. A few weeks later I saw the same set for 32.99. So such a good deal I could not pass it up. I brought three more. The motors and track were worth that much. I was in the store last week and there was very little in the way of train supplies. All life like track with base was steel, no nickel silver in HO. I have not seen a 50% off from them but then again since I was not aware of them I have not been looking real hard. Thanks for the heads up. Phil

I wonder if your local Hobby Lobby is part of the chain of stores by that name in the US. Your description doesn't sound at all like the Hobby Lobby stores here in Texas. I'd have to say customer service is one of their strong points here; they may not know what they're talking about sometimes but they do try for the most part.

I was just at the local Hobby Lobby today. The Boley vehicles are now $1.50 each. I also found some plaster impregnated gauze stuff in the craft section. 2.99 for three rolls. Multipliled out the totals, and it seems cheaper than the WS stuff.

I got some "shaker" Woodland Scenic turf for $5.00 each ( 1/2 off) after Christmas but most of the other RR items in HO were all gone. We also have a Michaels here and almost every week they have a coupon for 40% or 50% on anyone non sale item...even at 50% off full price I bought an airbrush for $47.50 and the cheapest I could find it for mail order was $60.00 plus shipping. So if you got the time to check up on these "chain" stores and don't mind pot luck, you can save some big bucks!

There are several Hobby Lobbys in my area and their selection of MR stuff varies widely. Other than than Woodland Scenics stuff, most of what they carry is toy train set quality. For me, it is my source of extremely cheap acrylic paints in a wide variety of colors. They are so cheap that I keep at least six different shades of whites, blacks, grays and browns as well as several reds, blues, greens, and yellows. It makes it very cheap to blend various colors to get uniques shades for every structure I build. I don't know why anyone would spend $3 a bottle on Polly S paints unless they want a railroad specific color.

Thanks for the coupon. [:D]

I went during the after christmas sale and got lots of Woodland Scenics stuff 1/2 price. Hobby Lobby, like Michaels, is a good source of pastels and paints. They don't have a lot of train stuff but what they have (here anyway) is pretty good.

Seeing that they just had a 50% off sale on railroad stuff, I'd be surprised if this coupon applies to that stuff. It looks like it is for doll houses, accessories (for the doll houses) and minis (for the doll houses). I guess we'll find out today.

About twice a year, me and my buddy Steve make the Hobby Lobby rounds. There's about six stores on this side of Houston that I check in on to see if they've gotten in anything I can use.

I've been eyeing one of those "ott" lights for the next 50 percent off coupon. Hobby Lobby often has some good deals on tools.
