Thanks Dave.  You bring up a very familiar point on the unreliable-reliability of the postal "service" sometimes.  That was some funny stuffLaugh

Maybe the guy that has my magazine will decide that he likes model railroading too and order his own subscription from Kalmbach instead of stealing my train reading material.

They once put one of my packages from eBay in someone else's mail box.  Of all the times for a mix-up, that one just happened to be two Milwaukee Road SD40-2's.  Luckily it was a good honest person on the receiving end, as they we're nice enough to bring it to my door.  Don't ya just love Honest People?

The postal service can feel free to put one of my bills in someone else's mailbox whenever they want, but the Milwaukee ordeal was a bit nerve-racking.

The hold time with Kalmbach Media was only about ten minutes this afternoon and the gal was very helpful and friendly as usual.  She said the magazine was mailed out on the 3rd but they will be sending out another one.

Now I'll have almost too much railroad reading material, with two months issues coming around the same time, but twice as many pictures to look at firstStick out tongue...Laugh

Track fiddler

Has anyone else not received their December issue of MR magazine yet.  Haven't ever been skipped an issue till now.

Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago basically right on the normal schedule. However, I do recall that it did NOT arrive on the same day as my Trains magazine, but a couple of days later.  Almost always the two arrive on the same day.  That suggests that perhaps there was some disruption of the mailing schedule?  But lately our US postal "service" (note the 'air quotes' around 'service') has been so reliably unreliable, including clear evidence that someone else found it in their mailbox first, that I don't draw too many conclusions about late mail.

I was a charter subscriber to MRVP, and suddenly, about six or eight months before the promised (and horribly missed) debut of the new Trains.com, new content on MRVP droped to a bare trickle.

I loved MRVP.

I keep thinking maybe I will try the new pay side of the website? - but no

I was given free access to the new pay website, I think because I was a MRVP user, but it never worked, and I could not find anything.

Like others as a former MRVP paying customer I was terminally irked by Kalmbach's manner of telling us to get lost.

Yeah, me too. MRVP stopped working, I could not get onto the new site easily, and nothing seemed to be there.

I loved the layout tour videos on MRVP, anything featuring the MR&T, and the project layout builds.

That content was gone when I could "access" the new site. Instead we had crazy videos that were unwatchable for me.

I cannot stand Jason Jensen over on YouTube, and he is a fellow wargamer. His video style is way too annoying, but I bet he would be great fun to dice-off against over a table top.

Also over on YouTube... The "What's new in trains" videos are SO BORING. Most unboxing/review videos are moronic and by people who obviously know nothing about trains or models of them. With the exception of ASX-ADS (or something like that), build videos on YouTube just have me shaking my head.

Harrison's videos (NCT) are mostly watchable, and I make it a point to check out everything he releases.

I was on the free too. It took me a long time to find my way arround the new site and had to write down instructions on how to do it. That is not the way to encurage use. In the end the new videos were on hold for the most part and even the magazine has lost its grip on me, many of the articals are into electronics and I get the feeling that the best hobiest out there are on u-tube and that is because they can get paid more but not just that, they can be seen and build a following. The weirdest thing though is that in the end they did not contact me for comments etc. about my experience.

Personally, be it MR, or some guy on youtube, I have a hard time watching "how to" or "I did this" videos, and would have a harder doing it on a regularly scheduled basis as new ones are released.

I generally agree -- indeed I tend to doze off during even the best railfan videos too -- but there are some "how to" things that can be shown on a video that are a slog to try to descibe in print only.  Hand laying track for example.  That is why some of the old MR "video extras" that were featured on this website to accompany a specific article in its early days were useful.  They weren't trying to video the entire article, just the minute or two of a technique that amplified the print article's text or made more vivid what a photo or series of photos tried to do.  That to me had genuine value.

Once videos became the main point they got padded to make them last the 10 or 15 minutes that folks had a (valid) reason to think was what they were paying for, even if the content was still a few minutes worth.  I think David Popp makes good videos that get to the point but the bald manic guy whose name I forget and who evidently thinks himself very funny, or feels he has to try, I find to be literally unwatchable.  And some of the toy train vids are sort of creepy.  Like others as a former MRVP paying customer I was terminally irked by Kalmbach's manner of telling us to get lost.

In your dreams, maybe.

I was a charter subscriber to MRVP, and suddenly, about six or eight months before the promised (and horribly missed) debut of the new Trains.com, new content on MRVP droped to a bare trickle. Instead of the three to four new videos each month that had been coming out, suddenly it was one and sometimes two a month. Month after month, with no explanation. Found out (much) later that all the new content was being diverted for Trains.com - all while letting folks continue paying for the content they were no longer receiving on MRVP. Great consideration for their customer base, huh?

Yes, and I agree that for those of you who purchased that product/service that was really not very professional of them.

I keep thinking maybe I will try the new pay side of the website? - but no - I barely have time for all the other things I am trying to do.

Will subscribers get a few months free because they held the video releases while making trains.com/video?

Your question assumes that a persons subscription included the previous online video offerings.

I have been a MR subscriber since 1968 and have never subscribed to the additional online features.

I would be surprised if they offered any magazines for free for that (or just about any other) reason.  But having said that, it is curious that when I started subscribing to Model Railroader (1965 - before that I bought separate issues at the LHS) the "anniversary" date was January - it was a Christmas present for many years from my folks.  And for years the renewal invites would come in November or whatever and the date would move up to the next January.  Odd little factoid: those early issues were mailed to "Master David Nelson."  Back in those days you were a Master before you became a Mister, at age 18.

But after all these years (58?) of consistent subscribing now my renewal date is in June.  How did that happen?  Not sure.  Now and then an issue would never arrive and they'd ship a replacement issue, and maybe they just advanced the subscription by a month?  I do recall once posting on this Forum that my copy of MR had all sorts of strange colors and printing blunders and then editor Terry Thompson asked me to mail it to him so he could show it to the printer -- he had a replacement copy sent of course and sent a note saying he'd advanced my subscription by a couple of months to defray my time and trouble and mailing cost.  Anyway over the years that subscription of mine has moved up a full half year even though I have always bought an "annual" subscription.  Not sure how it happened but I am not complaining.  It did NOT happen with my Trains subscription which has always started in November, so clearly it wasn't a matter of Kalmbach just feeling in a generous mood.
