Dave.   I am not fond of licorice like I used to be.   Dawn likes it though. Smile

Going away with family is good fun.   We meet our family at Peterborough then travel together to Norfolk.

Have a good vacation,  Dave.

Good morning, and happy weekend to everybody.

I hope Chloe gets back here with my coffee refill soon. The eggs were delicious this morning.

The Olympics started last night. I just don't care at all this year. I am normally the world's biggest Olympic fan. I even took the two weeks off work each year just to watch as much as I could, but it just does not excite me this time. The part of the opening ceremony I saw could not even get me into the mood.

My wife hit the neighbor's mailbox yesterday. I knew this was going to happen eventually. When they built the house across the street, the mailbox was installed directly behind my driveway.

I will need to fix it soon.

Hope we all have a good day, and weekend.

Good morning

Interesting about the holiday thing in lieu of vacation.  I never knew this before.  Also interesting how words are spelled differently.

I have a CN box car that has Canadian on one side.  And Canadien spelled differently on the other sideHuh?  I think it's a respect for the French type of thing or something like that.

My brother is picking me up to go to a big train show today.  I'm both excited and kind of scared at the same time.  They say the delta variant is on the rise.  I guess I'll just grab my mask like I have to do when I go to the grocery store.

Other than that it sounds like it's going to be a fun day.

Sorry to hear about your cat Mr. B

Have a great day gentlemanWink

I went to my first post-lockdown train show a couple of weeks ago.

It was not as good as I hoped, but I did find some treasures. I hope your experience is better. Have fun!

Good monring ....

TF .... CN has used the two spellings of Canadian (Canadien) as long as I can remembr. It was how they did it when CN was still owned by the Canadian government.

BEar .... Not all North Ameirca uses USA's spelling. Canada is like the Brits . Colour for example.

Our theme for the month is places we live or have lived. Here are pictures of when I was a teen age railfan growing up in Illinois.

Afternoon folks!

I have been on the first part of the week before diet for having the old "rotorooter" job.  Yep, that time again for a colonoscopy.....  No nuts, popcorn, or seedsw!  That is about half of my normal diet these days.  They called me yesterday and left two messages (I was over at my son's house where a contractor was replacing a couple doors, one very large that goes onto their old deck, and the screen door for their entrance by the driveway.)  So as per directions, I called them back to find out when I was scheduled to go through the "experience".  The lady told me I need to arrive at the surgery center at 6:45am!!!  OK, when I had the pre exam visit I told the PA that I would like to have it fairly early so I could get back to whatever I have left of life that much earlier, but 6:45 am?!?  Actually that will work out well for my son who is my chauffeur for the proceedure.  BUt, I have to start drinking the second half of the "Clean-out" stuff 4 hours before that!  I will have to get up at 2:30 to start that......  Oh well....

A few days ago I was mowing lawn by a large patch of Milkweed I have in my front lawn, when.....  Something starts to flutter around my head.  When it landed and I could get a close look......  It was what I have been hoping to find all summer.  Photos below-

Always nice to see a healthy, endangered species on the property!

Thanks to everyone who mentioned our little cat Emily.  It's appreciated.  She was a rescue cat, found on a busy street when she was young.  After she was adopted, she lived in a older house with...mice!  She was good at catching them, and the small snakes that snuck in during the winter.  What better life could a cat have?

We kept her at home her last few days.  She followed us around to be with us.  She felt secure and comfortable here.

Good evening.

I just got home a bit ago after having dinner with my Bro.  We went to the shady patio at the Mexican restaurant and had chili rellenosDinner

The train show was a blast and of my best finds I got a really cool red white and black CN SW 1500 Switcher with some micro trains Duluth Mesabi cars that are impossible to find on eBay.

My brother came up with the trophy though and I was happy for him.  He found a brand new Walthers Burlington Northern 5 unit well car set for double stackersStick out tongue  I didn't know they started doing double stacker cars with BN.  I thought that came after BNSF.  I sure would like to have that set too.

I love monarch butterflies Ray.  I have pictures somewhere where they congregated by the hundreds of thousands of them somewhere down south.

I better hang on to those pictures because that doesn't happen anymore,  unfortunately they keep mowing down all the milkweed fields everywhereSad

Well I'm supposed to be going to my friend Jim's backyard BBQ birthday party in a little bit here.

Have a great evening gentlemenWink

Douglas .... Unfortunately, I lost nearly all my railfan pictures long ago. The two I showed here had been on 35 mm slides I found. I have more slides somewhere in a black hole. ..... The two pictures I posted: .. Burlington commuter train stopping in Hinsdale, IL (Chicago suburb) with SD24's hauling a frieght train on the center track. CB&Q mainline had three tracks, and was busy all of the time. I grw up very close to that. ... Santa Fe main line out of Chicago was not far from me.  After my friends and I had drivers licenses, we sometimes rail fanned there.  Most passenger trains on the Santa Fe were pulled with F-units.

TF ..... Sounds like you attended a worthwhile train show. What kind of cars were the Duluth Mesabi ? Ore cars ?

Me too. I have been going through boxes of old photos from my parents that my sister gave me. I have found a few in their, and some pictures of the old SGRR layouts, but I lost so much.

Thanks Dave. It is not difficult to feel guilty about not doing anything when you are literally sitting right next to a bare stud wall!

I will work on it tomorrow. Today was great, but I cannot make a habit of this.

Good Sunday Morning!

This video is a little longer in duration than most I suggest but, hey, for a Sunday morning it will go great with a cup of your favorite hot beverage and perhaps a scone or two:

I rather enjoyed it.

I picked up a lot of my understanding of British vernacular from watching lots of Beatles movies and interviews.

I love some of the lines of dialog in the movie above Yes

Enjoy, Ed

Ed/GmPullman, thanks for the British Rail video on signal engineers. I love those old educational videos on railways from both sides of "the pond."

I haven't posted on here in a while, so here's an update. About a week ago I had a job interview for a Paralegal position. I liked the lawyer I talked too and felt we got a long well. I brought in a portfolio of my Paralegal classwork and the guy seemed please that I'd worked on coursework related to the practice. They said they'd call about a second interview and so far, no call. I'll contact them myself next week. I'm so ready for a job change and this one would pay a third better, be in line with my education, and be a 9-5 job and not require me to work weekends, evenings, and different shifts. So I'm saying some prayers, keeping my fingers crossed, and what-not. Plus also looking into similar jobs in the area.

On the MR front, I've made more progress on that South River Model Works kit I've mentioned on here. I'll post pics in WPF soon. I've also been tinkering with getting a Precision Scale Boston and Maine 2-8-4 running better and I've made progress but do think there's room for improvement. Still some hesitation and friction while running but overall, it's quite smooth and quiet. It's the first brass steam engine model that's needed much tinkering by me to run. Part of me wants to keep at it, even if it means buying expensive tools I'll not use much, but I'd have the satisfaction of getting the work done myself, and at my own pace. I'm concerned it needs quartering work at this point but it's hard to tell.

I went through some older MR issues and found Pelle Soeborg's 2x9 shelf layout from the October and November 2002 issues and thought oh yeah, a setup like his could be viable for that corner in my basement. It'd be about 2x10 on one side and about 2x4 on another. The benchwork he used looks fairly simple and it'd allow me to do photography, practice scenery, track-laying and other things I'd like to try.

We had all of 3 minutes of hard rain yesterday.  Last I looked I had 7000 steps just moving he sprinklers around.  The smoke disappeared for 2 days but is back again.  Hot and humid will be back next week.

The garden is producing more squash than we can give away.  Cucumbers were slow to appear but are coming along well.  Tomatoes have been slow to ripen but are also starting in earnest.

Since the Trains.com roll out and all the associated joys of that, I have not opened the last 2 issues of MR nor worked on the layout.

My little niece melts my heart!

When I show up she has her little arms wide open yelling Uncle John Uncle John running at me.

Last night at Jim's Backyard BBQ party there was nothing else but my little CC in her cute little sundress I bought her.

I have a bruise on my hip and I'm sore today because I kept going up the jungle gym to slide down the slide with herLaugh

This little girl wakes up in the morning with a smile on her face and just goes happy-go-lucky all day long.

She called me two times today.

She is the best thing that has ever happened to me since Schmucker's Cherry preservesLaugh

Good evening ...

Alvie .... Best wishes regarding the job situation you described. ... I'm not familiar witht the South River Model Works kit you mentioned today, and evidently I did not see what you said previously. You menioned layout planning. Much of my layout is around the wall with two foor width.

TF ..... That is an adorable photo. Thanks for sharing it. .... Also, I like the arrowhead logo on the covered hopper.

Brent .... That is an interesting photo of a steam locomotive. It says Atlantic Central, and that reminds me of Sheldon. I wonder if he has seen that picture.

Kevin ... That was a very quick response to my request in the Show Me thread.

Ed .... Thanks for sharing the video.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

We had an interesting day today.

My wife found out that today was the last day of the Metrocon Cosplay Convention in Tampa, which is something we have enjoyed a lot in the past. We decided to go up there and check it out.

We did not get there until about 2:00 in the afternoon, and nearly all was done by then. There were some participants outside for photo shoots, and we walked along the Tampa Bay Waterfront.

We ran into two of my youngest daughter's old friends that we had not seen in a couple of years. They were in full costume, but we took them out to eat at Longhorn Steakhouse anyway, and we talked and caught up on stuff. They are both graduated from college and doing normal adult things with their lives. One of them is a budget anylist for the VA in Orlando, and the other is a project manager for a marine construction company in Tampa.

Then we drove over to Ikea and walked around for a couple of hours and got in a bunch of steps for the day. We only spent less than $10.00 in Ikea. That is a low total for us, probably a record.

On the drive home on Interstate 75 we drove into a Florida Highway Patrol "narcotics search site" they had set up at Mile Marker 221. This was stupid. They had dogs walk around the cars and sniff each one. Traffic was backed up for miles, and it added about 90 minutes to the drive home. I have never seen anything like this before.

I watched the second day of "street track" skateboarding in the Olympics. I know the Olympics are kind of an amateur event, but this looked like a real half-baked amateur-hour spectacle. I have never seen anything less impressive in the Olympics. There were endless falls and fails, and nothing looked as good as what you can see in a skate park in a big city.

They kept comparing it to Snowboarding... um... no! In Snowboarding we have the incredible runs on half-pipe by the likes of Shawn White where you watch and just way "wow", that is amazing. While watching Olympic skateboarding, you just fall asleep.

The World Is A Beautiful Place.

Mornin' everyone!

Just got home an hour ago from the Colonoscopy....  Took out three polyps and depending what kind they are it will result in when the next one will be done...  So it looks like I will at some time be back at the surgery center....  They were not cancerous though from what he told me.  Less in number than what he has usually found so that is good.  Celebrated by getting a box of Dunkin Dounuts to get my blood sugar up where it shouldn't be...  CoolBig Smile

Hey guys!  Hope everyone's Monday is going well.

TF, she's a cutie!  You're a lucky uncle!  By the way, do my eyes deceive me, or does your shirt match your new train car?

Kevin, I kind of felt the same way watching the skateboarding.  I was excited to see it at first, but that quickly waned.

Howmus, good a reason as any to get doughnuts!  Hope the results are more good news.

Had a long weekend, but not in a good way.  My oldest daughter had surgery Thursday, so spent the weekend tending to her.  Waking her up for pain meds every 2-4 hours got old fast!  The procedure went well, but depending on what happens through recovery, her recovery window could be 4 weeks, could be 12-16!  Quite a range, and with her senior year of high school coming up too.  Fingers crossed.

Later gents!

Good afternoon

I thank all you guys for the acknowledgement and your kind comments on my little niece CC.  Yes she is a sweetheart and actually my great-niece I think because her mother is my niece Rachel.  Judy's sister Kelly's daughter's daughter.

I think I have it straight.  This family stuff confuses me sometimesLaugh

You have a good eye Mike.  You are exactly right that my shirt matches the arrowhead car I got at the train show.

About four years ago my brother and I were at the big train show in St Paul that only comes to town about every 7 years.  He bought me the Missabe Iron Range t-shirt and I bought him a DWP t-shirt.  Now we wear our t-shirts when we go to train shows togetherLaugh
