Just a quick stop saying that my eye surgery went well. I am condemned to stay away from reading or any computer work for a week and I think it won´t be wrong to follow that advice.

I´ll be back in a while.

Happy times!

Ulrich, glad to hear your surgery went well.

A few cool days here with some rain. Hope we can get more planting done. It should have been completed a couple of weeks ago but my wife just wasn't up to it.

Sad about Vera Lynn but she sure had a long life. Her songs were part of my childhood as my Dad played her records on occasion. He was in a RAF squadron so Vera Lynn was a part of that whole experience. She had an amazing voice.

Heading out soon for a meat pickup. Just phone in the order and they drop it right in the trunk. Lazy shopping and safe.

I'm still on the hunt for another brass loco but it has to be the right one at the right price.

When I hear the song, I think of my father, waiting in England to cross the channel.  I'll bet he and his outfit listened to the song, not knowing what was going to happen to them.

We can pay tribute to one of the most recognizable voices of the mid 1900s.

Her voice influenced so many soldiers heading into battle.  She died today at age 103.

Vera Lynn, "The Forces' Sweetheart":

My first introduction to Vera Lynn and "We'll Meet Again" is lost to memory.  My reintroduction is not: the closing frames of Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove".  Talk about dark humor!  Still one of my top ten movies - ever.

I love this clip of her.

Kevin,

You brought tears to my eyes again watching the compelation video of Vera Lynn. She was Britain's version of Bob Hope.

Thanks for the video.

TF my sincere condolances

I had the opposite problem from Ulrich.  We signed settlement papers on our home yesterday, remotely at 9 am.  At 3:30 I got a call from the title agent, the loan did not come through so settlement is postponed.

In between I had a procedure at my podiatrist for an ingrown toe nail.  He is down to seeing 4 patients and hour and he doesn't want to go to the hospital to do any procedures, for the time being.

Meanwhile packing is going poorly.  I thought I had all my cements and paints packed up and found 4 more bottles.  Same with just about anything else, tools, sandpaper, shot gun shell are all in scattered throughout the house.

Kevin, You brought tears to my eyes again watching the compelation video of Vera Lynn.

She is amazing. My favorite song of hers is the 1952 recording of Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart which she includes lyrics reminiscent of We'll Meet Again.

That was her only recording to reach number 1 in the United States. This led her occassionally (and incorrectly) being called a one-hit-wonder.

When I packed up my hobby workshop for this remodel, I had the same experience.

I thought I was so organized and had everything in its place, but it seemed like every drawer I opened I said "hey, this does not belong here".

When I unpack, I will try to get it all straight.

Good morning.  Another day, another bacon, eggs, and coffee breakfast.  Mornings are great!

Hope today is a better one for everyone.

I don't have any train pictures from South Dakota, but our family went there in about 1959 (?) or so.  I don't remember much, but I think these dinosaur statues were near Rapid City.  Notice the 1957 Plymouth we drove.  At the time, I thought this was about the most futuristic-looking car around.

Good Morning,

I've only been to South Dakota once and that was in 1955. We went to see the Bad Lands and Black Hills. Quite a journey in a 1951 Morris Oxford. I remember stopping in small towns and a crowd of men would gather around the car as most had never seen one. I don't think they were sold in the U.S.

Expecting showers again this afternoon so I guess not much yard work will get done.

Last night we had our first BBQ of the year. Just burgers but were they ever good. We bought them from a specialty grocery and at 5 bucks apiece they are an expensive burger but wow are they ever good. The store makes them up in house using the best quality beef and seasonings.

Not much new on the birding front. We're getting a lot of Gold Finches but not much else right now. I have to buy more bird seed though as we are feeding the squirrels too plus a couple of chipmunks. My wife calls one Terry and it will run to her when she calls its name. They seem to be smart little critters as she has named/tamed them before.

Good morning all, it is a 20c rainy day on the edge of the mighty Pacific.

I am spending today as I did yesterday in front of the computer as we try and sell a 10 acre piece of property that belonged to the lady whose Estate I am looking after. For six months nothing, now the developers are in a bidding war, so we should do well. Real Estate prices are shooting up as things start to return to normal around here. Only eight in hospital in B.C. Two in the I.C.U.

John, I remember that Dino from our 7 week trip in 1966 across the U.S. from the coast to the Dakotas, up to home town Winnipeg and a 3 week stay at our place at Ottermere lake in Ontario. Accessible only by train (the campers special).

Here we are, I am under the sign. Can you guess what kind of car that is???

We have a couple of Owls that have taken up residence in the back yard, the wife is worried they will get their hooks into the dogs as she has patched up many victims of owl attacks over the years, nasty.

Lots of fond memories of the previous generation singing Vera Lynn songs around the piano when I was a kid. Lots of booze and cigs for the adults and wine gums and bubble gum sigs for us kids.Laugh I still know all the songs by heart as we (all the young cousins) joined in. Two of my Uncles that went through some horrific stuff in the war were pretty good on the harmonicas. Both had them with them in their foxholes.

Ulrich, hope your eye surgery recovery is going well. I took a hard hit to the eye once and went blind in about ten minutess as the eye filled with blood. The eye surgeon said that must have been a h--- of a blow. Wore a patch for two weeks until it cleared up with no permanent damage.

TF, hope you are managing through these tough days okay, we are all thinking about you and what you are dealing with.

Well another offer has poured inLaugh A new developer has joined the fray, The money is getting serious, I have not dealt with these kinds of amounts before. An extra $100,000.00 thrown in or slashed off with the stroke of a pen. The negotiating is no different just much bigger $. I better go respond.

All the best to all.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk a dog treat.

Took Dirk to get groomed today. Dang, where did he go? I got back a much smaller looking dog. His fur was thick, no matter how much I combed and white tumble weeds down the hallway. Think they many thing is my wife had them cut off his britches (spell check) and he looks shorter in length. I would say his britches (fur on rear legs) was a good 4" long.

One think I was mad about! Angry None of the groomer's that where talking with us where wearing mask! Angry Grooming room of Pets Mart is small and they where way closer than 6 foot! It was taking for ever, my wife wanted done one way, they want to do it a other way. (they want to do it the $72.00 way) Finally I lost it and told them "I am not comfortable with you folks not wearing mask". They did the right thing and but on mask. They all so had mask on when we picked up Drik.

I still think the virus is blowen out of proportion some what. But rather safe than sorry, I all wise ware a mask when I go into a store. When I have a customer in my store, I ware a mask!

I don't like being told what to do, like most people. I don't like Motorcycle Helmet Laws, I don't like Car Seat Belt Laws! But I ware a helment when I ride and seat belts when I drive because I belive in them! Not because there is a Law that says I have too!

Time to sit out with Drik.

Later Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof!

John TF ....... You are welcome. .... I remember what it was like when one of Shelley's sisters passed away. In her case, it was COPD that destroyed her lungs, but the outcome was bascially the same thing as you had with Kelly.

CN Charlie .... I sent a Private Message, and I hope you receive it.

TF, I think you know how much everyone appreciates you here.

My wife reminded me that it was ten years ago today that my oldest brother died from agent orange lung cancer.  It was a long and unpleasant time, so I know what you and your wife are going through.  It may not seem like it now, but the old saying is true:  time does heal wounds.  We still miss him, but the pain of the loss fades.  We'll keep you in mind during the next days of funeral and sympathy cards.

Everyone in a business around here, wears a mask and people are supposed to wear a mask in stores.  Today my wife went to Trader Joes and there was a scene where the cashier asked a customer to pull the mask off their chin and the customer went into full I have rights and I cannot breathe with a mask.  Good thing I was not there.

I am sure I wore a mask many days, 22 hours a day and it never occured to me that I had trouble breathing.

Changing topics, more appropriate for the diner.  my son sent me a Snake River Farms Wagyu Manhattan steak for Fathers Day.

I never heard of the cut, is the center of a rib eye steak.

I cooked it, as they recommended, in an iron skillet, and while it was a little bit too rare, it was the most tender steak ever.
The crust on the top and bottom is not something I have ever achieved on the grill

Brent and Bear,

Memories come around.  When I was a lad of 12, my mom had an Austin A40.  It had a choke, throttle, and the lighted "flags" that popped out of the center (oops, centre) door jambs as turn signals.  Nothing at all like it in a town of only 50K in Michigan.  I have no idea where she came across it or what year it was, but I saw one in an English period mystery a month or so ago.

When it was winter and in the 20s or teens it took forever to warm up enough to drive, something I learned on a fistful of occasions when I woke up too late to ply the icy sidewalks to junior high a mile and a half down the street.  Mom was in a rather somber mood when that happened - and not, I suspect, from the car's behavior! Whistling

Owls: I have hunted a lot, not owls.  I once had a screech owl sit in the tree next to me of way too long, in the middle of the afternoon.  Other than that, I have seen a big bird fly through the trees when it was too dark to see individual bushes a handful of times.

I have done a lot of hunting in SC and at a certain time before dawn, the owls start their calls.   They have a distictive cadence, which I have not heard in Maryland.

hoo hoo hoo hoooooo hoo hoo hoo hoooooo.

During turkey season, their call triggers the turkeys to gobble.
