Welcome All to Jeffrey's Trackside Diner

Located in - well that has not yet been decided, so we are still open for suggestions!

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner  is the place for you to go to relax and talk off topic about most anything - as long as you stay within the forum rules, which means certain hot button topics are excluded. Please refer to Steven Otte´s post on Forum Policies. Everybody is welcome to participate in the Diner !

The staff - that´s Zoe, Chloe, Flo, Janie, and Brunhilda —  is very friendly and will serve up plenty of virtual diner fare with a smile. Just don´t forget to leave a generous tip! Now and then, our host Steven Otte chips in and brings along some goodies for us to try - which is always heartily welcomed!

Happy times!

Good morning Ulrich, I was just at the diner, hasn't been locked up yet, but it's clearly closed down.

No fresh coffee, no nothing.  It's the first time I remember in a long time, that new locations were not discussed.

I'll be back.

Good Afternoon!

We are a little over 7 hours into the new month, so I took the liberty of moving the Diner to this month´s location in - well, I don´t know where we are at the moment. Maybe still in transit!

We are "enjoying" early Spring weather, which means it´s too warm, too wet and too windy. There is a rattling noise coming from the roof, indicating a few loose roof tiles. I just hope we will still have a roof over our heads when the predicted storm hits us. I did inform our landlord about it yesterday morning and urged him to get a roofer to look at it. Well he didn´t do that apparently, so I bet he wants to have a new roof, paid for by the insurance.

Petra made us a nice vegetable "potage" with lots of goodies in it. It was nice to have a meatless day, but only once in a while. I am following my late FIL´s advice who thought that the beef is the best vegetable!

Have a great weekend!

Happy times!

Good morning diners.

Washington and Lincoln birthday month.  George was a Virginia boy and Lincoln, born in KY was a congressman from Illinois.  How do any of those states sound?

How about

My vote goes to Kentucky! I think we have a Kentuckian in our midst, who could point us towards the "points of interest".

If my suggestion meets general consent, we could start off in New Haven, KY.

Happy times!

Washington, DC, at or near Union Station or Ivy City engine terminal?  Arlington, VA, former home of Potomac Yard?  Springfield, IL would be the other obvious option.  Maybe do Springfield for the first two weeks, and Arlington for the last two weeks?

Good morning.

Kentucky works.  Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, and Ed Ames would be proudSmile, Wink & Grin

It would be a shame not to post this photo.  It's pretty neat when a state puts this much architecture into a parking ramp.

It was worth the ten bucks to check out the parking ramp next to the Hoover Dam.

I am from KY as well, and not too far from Garry,

New Haven is the site of the KY railway Museum. ( I have yet to visit.)

In the far Western portion of ths state is Paducah KY (Where I am)

Paducah is a railroad and river town. In 1927 the IC built a huge locomotive shop here.

This is a view of the shops during the 1937 flood.

Kentucky sounds wonderful. Kentucky is, in my opinnion, the second most beautiful state, with California being #1.

.

It is cold and rainy here today. Not like Florida at all, the weather this Winter has been disappointing. It is 67 right now, and we are not even expected to see 70 today.

.

Superbowl tomorrow, in Miami!

Since I opened my mouth, I guess I'll have to take some responsibility for Kentucky.

The L&N was chartered in 1850, had 15 miles of track by 1855 and was completed in 1859, running from Louisville to Nashville TN.  It cost $7.2 million.  Today high speed rail can cost close to $200 million per mile.  Two years later, the railroad found itself in the middle of a war zone.

Went to Timonium today and it was crowded!  The show is held at the state fairgrounds and there are often one or two other shows running concurrently, home and garden, that sort of thing.  There were no other shows and I got there at 9:30 and parked as far away as I ever parked.

Rapido Trains was there and Jason Shron has a twin.  I walked up to him to tell him how much I enjoyed his videos and he had no vendor ID, seemed to be in a hurray and walked right by the  Rapido table without even looking at it.

Bought a atheran BB F dummy for $5 to salvage the truck sideframes, some people figures, diaphragms for my Stewart F3, a decoder and speaker.  I successfully resisted the urge to buy more rolling stock, or steam engines.  Didn't see anything of interest at all on the white elephant table.

Chatted with a vendor who had 2 Spring Mills blue B&O cabooses for $75.  These have been selling on Ebay for $125 as they are NLA.   I probably should have bought both on put one on ebay for $150.

This is about 1 block form my house. This was 11 years ago, wow where does time fly. They have since closed the road that the guy on the motorcycle turned on to and put in gates at t Pines road. They also installed new PTC signals etc and a switch heater.

Ya know, I don't think I have ever had Bourbon. We are going out tonight so I will see if I can have one at our friends' house, he has an extensive bar. I don't like sweet booze, just the drier stuff, so what am I looking for?

I have a lot to say about Vegas, not sure where to start, it was a break from the Winter wet and reasonably warm so we spent a lot of time outside. We were on the 28th floor and I ran up the stairs four times a day just to work off the gluttony I was partaking in, I came home 2lbs lighter than when we left.

Went to a Beatles knock off show that was excellent and also Chris Angel "mindfreak". It was a special show that was being taped for TV and it was just awesome. They moved us down to the front of the theatre from where we were sitting and he stood right beside us for one of his tricks in the isle.

We had been there several times over the years as my wife would go to educational conferences there. She would be in school 12hrs a day and I would get up to no good.Mischief Las Vegas really seems to have had the life sucked out of it since our last visit several years ago. The wife was the one that wanted to go and now has no desire to return which is fine with me.

We had planned to go to Cuba until someone gave us this trip and so we went to Vegas. The wife messed up the return flight and booked us out at the end of February instead of January so the day before we left we went to check-in and reserve our seats and we were not on the manifest. We had to buy two return tickets that were $600.00, no biggie. I have never known the wife to mess up before, old age is setting in.Laugh

Had a great flight back. There was a horrendous storm going on in the Pacific Northwest and the ride down was a hoot. It was so bad the flight attendants could not collect the drinks and one of them actually crawled to her seat along the floor. The best part was they didn't even charge us extra for the fun ride down.Yes I really love flights like that.

Went to the Atomic Testing Museum associated with the Smithsonian, this is where the contrast in the human condition really shocks in Vegas. There were High school kids doing internships there and we spent three hours having the most interesting conversations with them, they were such great kids with bright futures ahead of them. I talked to a couple of them for ages about nuclear-powered spacecraft, it was a good day.

We walked four miles each way to and from the hotel to the museum and talked to so many homeless people along the way, it was an interesting experience and so sad to see they had so little hope. Seeing the kids on the strip hustling and how they live their lives and going to the museum and talking to the kids there that are the complete opposite just left us shaking our heads.

Went to a couple of really good restaurants and hit a couple of the hotel buffets and as we expected the better restaurants had much better quality cuisine.

We were walking along the strip and there was this kid in his mid-twenties on the ground with a police officer next to him. I turned to my wife and said dead? She said yep and we walked a little further along and heard another officer saying they had a deceased person at their location. He was well dressed so who knows.

The ambulances travel up and down the strip in packs and pull over right, left and centre picking up all the massively overweight tourist that just drop while walking the strip. It was like something out of a Monty Python movie. "bring out your dead". Renting those wheelchair type scooters is big business there for people that can't walk more than a block. It is a long way between hotels and a lot of people can't walk that far. That made it easy for me to run up the 28 floors four times a day.Laugh

Vegas was okay and a break, but there are way better places in the world to go, like Cuba.Pirate

Time to go and discover Bourbon, I hope.

All the best to all.

Good evening ....

Well, well, well ........ Yes, MLC and I live in KY. ...... My wife and I moved here from Michigan.

For starters, I suggest we have some Kentucky Hot Brown .... This is a very good open faced sandwich created for the dining room at the Brown Hotel in Louisville in the 1920's. ... You can google it and read about it in Wikipedia and other sites.

It has bread, turkey, bacon, cheese, tomato slices, and mornay sauce. It is baked. It hits the spot on cold winter days. It is served near where we live in the lodge at Barkley Lake State Park. .... Yummy !

Kentucky railroads originate large amounts of coal from the Appalachian Mountains in eastern KY and along the Ohio River Valley. Also, there is a lot of freight passing through KY between northern states and southern states. There are several large railroad bridges  over the Ohio River connecting KY with OH, IN. and IL.

The KY Ry Museum in New Haven is very worthwhile. It is located in middle of KY south of Louisville. It is near President Lincoln's birth place, Mamouth Cave, Bowling Green, and Bardstown (home of bourbon distilleries). A very nice diner train (My Old Kentucky Dinner Train operates out of Bardstown.)

In the Amtrak era, there is hardly any passenger train service in KY.  The only train runs between Chicago and New Orleans. It stops in the middle of the night in Fulton, KY which is close to the Mississippi River.

I had to go to WalMart and buy a digital antenna so I can watch the Superbowl tomorrow. Our cable provider dropped Fox on February 1st. I am dropping cable on Monday.

.

Anyway, I have not been a WalMart in months. What a zoo this place has become. It was never great, now it is a complete circus minus the ringmaster.

.

All the registers are self-checkout now. I saw two people just walk out without paying for anything. It is crazy.

.

I do not ever want to go back again.

Kentucky!

Kevin is right -- it really is a beautiful state.

If you love cars, then you need to schedule a trip to Bowling Green in southern Kentucky.  Mammoth Cave is a short distance away, but the real attraction is the General Motors Corvette plant and the Corvette Museum.  It's a great way to spend a day.  The plant gives guided tours, and it really is amazing to see a car put together.

Best part of my day you ask? Dirk finally pooped in the house! Confused Reason that is good new's to me is I don't have to take him for a long walk tonight!

While I enjoy walking him I am over doing it. My right ankle is badly brusied frrom last night walk and it is hurting.

Work Front. Yep I had to work today on my normal day off. Super Angry Jerry and I had only 4 coustomers in 5.5 hours so I left a 4:00 PM. Nancy was mad I left but I don't care, it was my day off and the store was not busy!

Far as KY? When I was a young man I loved KY! Made things go smoother. Whistling

Train Front? Well I am double heading a None Chuffing BLI PRR I1sa with a Chuffing can not pull diddly BLI NY QSI Decoder Hudson. Working out great so far! I do like the look's of Doubled Headed Steam engines! The QSI Hudson as the best steam whistle I have ever heard, but the Banshee is not far behind.

Later, Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof!

Kentucky!

.

Also... just a traveler's note. There is a small town in Kentucky named Glendale. There is a restaurant there called Tony York's on Main. It is one of the best restaurants I have ever found in a small town.

.

If you are nearby, you owe it to yourself to get there.

.

My Uncle Robert lived in the same region as Garry does back in the 1970s. It was my first introduction to Kentucky, and I loved visiting his lake cabin.

Good evening.

Thanks for sharing the railroad history and other current info in Kentucky so far.  I'm afraid I won't be much of a contribution as I don't know much about that area.

I do find things I don't know much about interesting and always eager to learn.  I have seen enough pictures of Kentucky to know that it is a very beautiful state and saw part of it driving through last year.

I'd have to say pretty much the same thing about Laughlin as you said about Vegas Brent.  There are better places to go.  Sounds like you still made the best of it though.

It was our 3rd free trip of 4 years.  It's getting a little (been there, done that.)  It's a warm place to go in the winter and the price is right.

We always rent a car and go see someplace new when we're down there so it always makes it worthwhile.

Oh, and about the bourbon.  Good luck with that.  I'm always joking around about booze.

It's a good thing the one time I tried bourbon was in a friend's driveway.  I blew it out in a mist stream just as fast as it went in my mouth .... YuckLaugh

I was joking around about the stairs too.  I always take the stairs when they're easily accessible.  Much of the time my job is nothing but stairs, not 28 floors 4 times a day thoughLaugh

I would have loved to be present during that conversation of nuclear-powered spacecraft.  Electromagnetic Propulsion definitely captures my interest.

Have a great evening all.

I did not enjoy the casinos at all.

I did enjoy the surrounding areas and sights to see. They can keep Vegas.
