 Eveing Diners

Flo, get the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk his Buffalo treat!

Work Front was Excellent Today! While I only had 4 customers and only 2 bought I had a $3750.00 dollar day! Big Smile

Wife is driving me nuts, so nothing new there. Dirk wanted to play a little tonight and was racing around wanting me to catch him. Was flying on and off the bed and he was moving! Wife told me to "make him stop or he will break a leg!" Just made me Angry He and I where enjoying our selfs and she wanted us to Stop! She will not let me let him lose in the fenced in backyard because he might get out. Sigh Poor guy seldom gets to run, and when he does she wants him to stop.

Br Lion Thanks for trying to help me with Windows 10. This is Windows 10 Pro, so I will not be able to watch DVD's? I guess I am going to need to buy a Windows 10 book for idiots. I was not happy when I had to up grade from Windows 98 to XP and that was a cake walk comparied to this.

Later none smoking Ken and Dirk say's Woof Woof.

Hum, top of the page, drinks are on Dirk and I !

Good Evening,

It was a little frosty here today but we are expecting 35F on Saturday! That counts as a heat wave.

Ken, glad things are going well with Dirk. Sounds like he is a real buddy. Robbie says to send a virtual hamburger his way. To quote Robbie --'Best Food on the Planet'. Mind you he says that about pizza too.

Not a lot going on here but I seem to be busy anyway. A lot of errands, appointments, etc.

We are going out for lunch tomorrow with some friends and I'm looking forward to that. Great food at 529, I especially like the way they do salmon.

The MIL's TV quit which is disappointing as it is only 2 years old. We went out and bought her another as fixing it would be too expensive considering the cost of a new one. Can't believe how light weight the new ones are. We lent her our bedroom unit that is about a 10 year old LCD. It must weigh 20 lbs compared to the 5 lbs of a new one. That is for a 24" unit.

Well time to take Robbie out before bed.

I'm a Canadian so I'm not supposed to mind the snow. Ha!! Bull feathers!! We like to complain about the weather as much as anybody else!

Yesterday and today we had our first real snowfall of the season, and it was way ahead of schedule. I had to take the portable layout trailer to the club because we are doing a show this weekend in Whitby, ON. The club is about 40 kms. from my home. Normal time is about 25 minutes. This time it took an hour. Mind you, I'm not complaining. Miraculously there were no idiots on the roads! Everyone was driving to suit the near whiteout and very slippery conditions!!

Towing a trailer in greasy conditions is interesting. The trailer is too small to have its own brakes so it loves to push when you don't need it to. Add to that the stupid anti-lock brakes and it takes a long time to get stopped on slippery roads. Why the car makers and legislators won't allow us to turn the ABS systems off when it is counterproductive is beyond me! I'm driving a vehicle that takes twice the distance to stop in the snow than it should. Stupid!!!!

Rant, rant, rant! I'll quit now, but feel free to carry on where I left off!Smile, Wink & Grin

I just suffered a tragic loss to my tool collection!Crying My 40+ year old Weller soldering gun bit the dust a couple of days ago. Actually, it had lived far longer than I had expected because I had dropped it many years ago and when I picked it up there was a noticeable rattle somewhere inside it. Nevertheless, it motored on.

I bought a new one and it was delivered on Tuesday. When I tried it out at first it didn't work Grumpy, but once I tightened the set screws on the tip everything worked fine. They have changed the design so that you don't have to put a 90 degree bend in the ends of the tips anymore, but obviously the set screws have to be very tight to make the iron work properly. I don't use the gun much but for some things the extra heat works well.

I was surprised that the best price by far was at Home Depot (Canada) and the delivery was free!

That is frustrating.  You were playing very similarly to one of our dogs favorites (chase on and off the bed).  Likelyhood of something happening there is pretty low.  Our little Jack Russell female (all of 12 pounds) jumps off anything and everything she can climb.  Beds, couches, hot tub, picnic table.  You name it.  Sprained an ankle a couple times, but she's also done that playing fetch too.  If we didn't have our fenced in backyard, I think our dogs would go absolutely bonkers.  Our dogs have escaped a couple times, but that was due to the fence being old (was already there before we bought the house 5 years ago.  Wife and I remember it being there for ages) and the nails on the boards rusting away.  I went through and the entire fence installing screws on all the boards and that solved the problem.  Keep working on her.  A dog's gotta play.

Good morning.  It's getting warmer here!  It's 28°F and going to get to a high of 42°!.  That should melt most of the snow.

When my in-laws were living, we traveled to Atlanta from New Orleans three or four times a year.  After getting to Alabama, it became the most boring drive possible.  You could see only pine trees on either side of the highway.  For 400 miles, that's what you saw -- pines trees and highways.  The only time you could see any distance was at an interchange.

Our house has two bedrooms on the main floor, and one of those rooms has two doors.  It allows a complete circle through the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedroom.  Our dachshund loves to chase around the circle with me following her.  I usually wear out pretty fast.

Another picture from the last trip of the Southern Railroad Crescent's last run from Atlanta to New Orleans.  I think this was at a stop in Meridian, Mississippi.

Have a good day, everyone!

Georgia is home to the busiest airport in the world. That Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

I took this picture of a plane landing at ATL last night at sunset.

Back in Georgia, USA.

.

I went down to Newnan, Georgia yesterday after work. I found a great place to eat and enjoyed a stroll around their town square.

.

Many places in Georgia have absolutely beautiful courthouses in their “town squares” downtown. Newnan has this excellent example.

Good morning.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee this morning.

It should warm up and dry out enough for me to pick up leaves today.

Finished one layout project yesterday, so today I will start one that I have had on hold for a while.  On our trips, my wife loves to stop at Cracker Barrel restaurants and spend money.  I am going to try and build an N Scale Cracker Barrel.  It has a flat roof, so my biggest problem is solved right there.

I just watched the November Cody's Office on the Model Railroader site.  I have begun to look forward to that video each month.

Hope everyone has a good Thursday!

The diner is parked in the magnificent state of Georgia this month, so I suggest we take a few steps away from the tracks and look at a local hobby shop and buy some goodies.

.

No trip to Georgia is complete, for a model railroader, without a stop at Riverdale Hobbies in Riverdale, Georgia. This is just South of Atlanta outside the perimeter with pretty easy access from Interstate 75.

.

This hobby shop has become my “local” shop, even though I live 600 miles away. They always have stuff I need to buy, keep undecorated freight car kits in stock, and have all the nifty detail bits I require to be happy.

.

The store is always spotlessly clean, and the shelves are neatly stocked. It is a true pleasure to browse around in here. I would never consider a trip to the Atlanta area complete without a stop at Riverdale Station.

Good morning from the sunny West Coast where it is supposed to be 15c today.

Kevin, that shop looks just like the one in Vancouver that seems to have everything, the only difference is, the Vancouver one is a mess.Laugh You go online to see if they have something in stock and drive in to Vancouver to get it and you cannot find it anywhere. Not a good business model.

I also love the old buildings and the history that is often behind them. There are older buildings in Eastern Canada but out West a hundred years old is about as old as you'll see. Now go to Europe and that is a whole new "old". My cousin took me on a tour of the Plymouth Naval yard, he was a senior officer so I got the "A" tour. Went on some ships and even a sub. Afterward, we went for a pint at the yard at a pub where the ceiling was just over 6' and the floor beams had a good 6 inches of wear in them and you had to be careful walking around in the place. The pub was so old that there was a plaque on the wall next to my seat saying that Captains Cook and Vancouver were among the officers that would sit where I was sitting. It was spine-tingling thinking about where I was sitting as I had read all about the voyages and the logs of both those famous explorers.

John, it is great to follow scratch builds, please post some photo's as you go. Never heard of Cracker Barral restaurants, not sure if there are any in Canada or not.

Well, I just finished my second cup of coffee so need to hop on the bike. I am down a few pounds so a bottle of Red will be on the menu Saturday.Dinner I go up or down five pounds like a yo-yo but once the range goes over ten pounds in either direction it is battle stations.

Maybe a third cup before I ride.Laugh

All the best to all.

Just dropping by to say hello!

I have been in a pretty bad shape the past few days. I developed a rather nasty pain in my left arm, which more or less immobilized me. The doc put my arm into a sling on Tuesday and gave me a shot, but there is no improvement, yet.

Sorry to be kind of short, I hope you understand I don´t feel much like socializing.

Happy times!

I stopped into the local liquor store yesterday for some Slightly Mighty, a local craft beer that's lighter than most, but still has some flavor.  I found they had Arrogant Bast*rd, one of my very favorites but hard to find.  So, I ended up with a six-pack of each, and I am sipping my first AB in quite some time right now.

Ulrich, take care.  I had a pretty useless doctor's appointment today, and I become more disenchanted with the medical establishment every day.  My medications make me feel constantly terrible, so she thought I needed a PSA test,  a sleep apnea test and a colonoscopy.  Really?

Mr B Timely post.  I see my internist tomorrow.  In another forum about another topic, one of my friends had prostate cancer with a negative PSA and a positive exam.   I requested that my last visit and he said only Urologists request that, and he doesn't usually do it.  I passed.

Colon cancer, There is a a high falutin DNA stool test.  If you read the fine print, it's not good if you have a family history or a personal history of polyps.  That includes me, twice.

I've had patients that had CPAP masks.  Personally there is no way I will ever where one of those.  Two of my in laws prefer wearing them to exercise.  I went to the gym today.

Lots of drugs can make you feel bad, beta blockers and statins being two.  I know someone who is on medical cannibus for cancer related pain.  They were not an experimenter in the 70's and are having bizarre dreams and unpleasant feeling.  There doctor was very positive as to the benefits.

Hard to get a contractor to call you back! I am finally sick of the none used nasty in ground and want it gone! My idea is to blow a hole in the bottom and fill it with gravel. Then bulid a deck over it. I want to leave the concrete around the pool. I hate cutting grass!

Not sure what you mean by this.  No such thing as a negative PSA, unless you mean that the blood test came back as "non-detectable".  Usually they don't get excited about he PSA result unless number is greater than 4, and then they'll look at the rate of increase of the test result between tests to determine followup.

If you are talkin about the digital exercise, for a number of years the family doctor used to do that.  Now it seems that he wants a urologist to earn the money.

For many years "they" always recommended that the tests be done yearly.  Now "they" suggest that the tests are not necessary.  Since I just read that prostate cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in men (behind lung cancer), I don't understand the new recommendation.

Yes, you are correct.  But after all these years I suddenly got back a positive result.  So my original 10 year re-inspect suddenly got moved up to happen the week of xmas.  Do I like the idea of having to go through this possibly unnecessarily?  Nope.  On the other hand dying from cancer seems to be a terrible way to go.  So I prefer to err on the side of caution.

.

I don't think I had been to Newnan before this trip. It is a beautiful town.

.

My only disapointment was the beautiful white church with a white tower that was undergoing renovation near the town square. I could not get a good picture of it due to a construction trailer blocking the only good vantage point.

.

I had a good time there, if only for a few hours.

.

It will not replace Acworth as my favorite town/suburb of Atlanta. Acworth has a busy double-track mainline right through the center of town. It is hard to complete with that, but I would not want to live there!

Good Afternoon!

I am on a seesaw of feelings and moods today. The good part is that there is a miniscule improvement in my left arm with the pain down to a level a normal dose of Ibuprofen makes it bearable.

The not so good part - and the one which really puts me in the doldrums today - is, that the real estate agent finally came back with an answer. Again, the answer left me with very mixed feelings. While we don´t have to worry about being denied the right to purchase a property, the one in question is off the market, as the owner suddenly has second thoughts on selling the house. Apparently it is not a question of price. This puts us back quite a lot. There are no other suitable properties available within our price range. The island of Ærø offers all the amenities we need. The bus service puts everything within reach without having to go by car. The island has grown on us once more and not being able to actually live there is a big draw back!

With that information in mind, I checked on the alternatives on my list, only to find out they all have been sold within the last two weeks! Rats!

Back to square 1! I am not giving up! Whenever a door closes, another one opens up! There is a place on the mainland, about an hour´s drive from the German border. The house is a thatched roof cottage, built in 1850, modernized 10 years ago,and situated on a huge 2 acre property, out of which 2/3 are covered with a forest. The house requires a minimum of a dapation, as there are already tow separate units, each one with a kitchen and a bathroom. The smaller unit is currently used as a holiday let.

Just some pictures:

The price is a bit lower, leaving sufficient room for repairs/renovations or adaptions. The nearest town is 10 miles away and sports a train station with a direct link to Germany. It would be a 5 hour train ride for our son to come and visit us, which is nice!

I hope it´ll not be sold until early next year.

Happy times!

On the other hand dying from cancer seems to be a terrible way to go.  So I prefer to err on the side of caution.

I know that colonoscopy preparation is not fun.  Colon cancer is one of the few that can be almost completely avoided if you go through the procedure early.

Ulrich, I hope you recover quickly.  We miss your daily posts.  Edit:  When I posted this, I saw that you had just posted, also.  Hope you continue to recover, and I hope another place opens up quickly.  I have to say that, since I live in a modern house, your thatched roof houses look so inviting and quaint.  Almost a fairy-tale look to us Americans.

Everyone else who is having health issues, hope everything comes out OK.

I know we are in Georgia, but this picture was taken out of the window of the Southern Railroad Crescent in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  Since the train was on its way from Atlanta, this picture still qualifies to be used in the Georgia diner, right?

Have a good day, everyone.

I always had a certain preference for homes with a history. Modern houses are certainly more functional, but old houses "breathe" an atmosphere which you just can´t build anew. Those thatched roof houses are fairy tale places for us, too - here in Germany, they are forbiddingly expensive. The same house, moved 10 miles to the west and 15 miles to the south would cost close to 4 million Dollar, compared to the rough 90k Dollar asking price.

Some pics from the interior of the place:

Living room

One of the two kitchens

One of the bathrooms

The house also features a double garage and a shed of 250 sq.ft. Total sq. footage is 2,000 excluding the garage and the shed.

I live close to Newnan.  It has two main ROWs through town, both NS.  The mainline runs from NC to FL and there is a branch line that runs from a junction in Bremen, GA through Newnan and on to Senoia, GA

Senoia is where the WALKING DEAD has been filmed for years.  If you've ever seen episodes with RR tracks, those are the tracks that go through Newnan and over to Senoia.  ( You should go to Senoia if you're a WD fan) .  Some of the industries in Newan will be the basis of my layout, and I might include the plastic packaging plant in Senoia, which is the reason for the tracks going there.

The tracks are ex-Central of GA RR tracks that went from Chattanooga around ATL and on to Savanah, a busy class 1 mainline back in the day.  Now just a stub line to serve a packaging plant.

Love Riverdale Station.  Bob has helped me with a few projects.

Good Morning,

Just back from an assessment with a physio at my gym. My wife says I list to the right and now I know why. My left leg is slightly longer than the right so no real fix. He did give me some exercises to improve my posture.

As far as prostate cancer goes, I can speak from personal experience as I had my prostate removed 3 years ago due to cancer. My GP always did a PSA and digital exam. When my PSA went to 4.1 he sent me to an urologist. He tested me for a couple of years and when it suddenly went to 4.4, he did a biopsy. That was an unpleasant experience however it found I had cancer. I also had an enlarged prostate. Then followed an MRI and then hormone therapy to shrink the prostate down. The hormone therapy knocked the PSA down to near zero but it isn't a cure. I had the surgery 3 years ago and am now clear. Moral is, get an annual PSA. While it isn't infallible, Maxman is right, changes indicate potential problems that can then be explored further. If my GP hadn't been on the ball, I might have wound up like an high school friend who died of it back in 2011. There are no symptoms until it is too late. Get your PSA checked!

I'm due for a colonoscapy next year. Here they go with a five year cycle and 3 if they find a polop.

I Googled heritage railroad stations in Ontario and went to images and there was a lot to look at.Indifferent I have friends in the music biz and have asked them but I don't think they will know.

I also really enjoyed the video. I have seen it before but that was years ago, there is good footage in it.

This might be more relevant to my fellow Canadians but does anyone remember an add that ran on TV during the CFL football games on Saturday and Sunday that was about either CP or CN that ran about three minutes and was a song accompanied with great RR video? I have not been able to find it, which is unusual.

I was up late last night pickin and decided to restring the axes. Nothing like breaking a brand new string to bring a session to a halt. I checked my supply and I did not have a replacement so going to the music store is top of the list today.

Ulrich, nice looking digs I hope all works out for you.

I get the PSA and stool check done every year along with my annual blood panel. Which reminds me I had better get my flu shot. My sister and I were trying to remember if anyone in the family including the Aunts, Uncles, and cousins had ever had cancer and we could not think of a soul. Heart disease is what gets us like clockwork in the mid-eighties. I might make ninety as I am thin and in good shape compared to the previous lot, some of whom smoked.

When it comes to topographical songs Gords lyrics take you there.

Evenin' Folks!

BATMAN
Which reminds me I had better get my flu shot.

Got mine today at my doctor's appointment.  Everything was within normal ranges with my A1C at 4.8....  He decided to lower my Diabettes Meds from Janumet 50/1000 to Janumet 50/500 and see if I can keep the sugar in good range with that.  Blood pressure was 118/62, pulse 62.  The nurse who took it said, "Wow!!"  I agreed that was not bad for an old phart about to turn 73 in a week and a half.  She checked all the meds I am on and asked if I had been taking a "certain" one for an "old Man's" problem?  I replied "of course, I like one of the side effects"...... Wink. She giggled a bit and told me she didn't blame me at all........ Thumbs Up. I'm sure some of the older guys here understand the reference....

Doc took a while to decide on how to lower the Diabetes Meds.  Gave me 4 different options.  I told him he knew a lot more about which should be best than I did, and he told me after counting to 4 on his fingers that there have been very few men patients that have ever actually gotten better with several of the conditions I have.  Should have seen the look on his face when I told him I am now running 5.1 miles three days a week over at the college.  I also told him I now plan to live long enough to become a financial drain on my children....  He said that might be a good possibility if I keep up what I have been doing...

Tomorrow is an NMRA Division meet in LeRoy, NY.  It will be a "round robin" bunch of clinics and two excellent layouts open in the afternoon.  I will have to leave here before 7am to arrive to help set up for the Meet.

Been enjoying many of the train photos!

Ulrich grea home!

Ray great A1C

He told me to exercise more and a story of his FiL, the laziest man he has ever known.  He is still alive and they had to remodel his bathroom to create a walk in shower as the man could hardly walk at age 80.  He finally started doing some exercise and is improving.

Lab work pending.  He suggested antihistamines for my chronic post nasal drip, which silently runs down into my throat and then I sound like I have chronic bronchitis.
