We found a great place to picnic, a nice Green Spot overlooking the St Croix Bluffs.

Scandia was a goose chase.  Judy's childhood memory didn't serve her well because the first thing I noticed there's no tracks in that townLaugh

She remembers a pretty elaborate Depot somewhere.  I told her to put her thinking cap on for the next week or two and we'll see if we can go find it.

We are in Stillwater now,  the river is still really high. Lots of snow and spring rains in Wisconsin and Minnesota this year.  Here's a picture of the parking lot I usually park in overlooking the lift bridge.  You can see the crane in the background,  they are restoring the historic bridge and are going to keep it for only walking and bikes.

We are going to go check out some antique shops and have a bite to eat later this afternoon.  I'll take a picture of Commander for you guys,  that's a historic building, it's an old Grain Mill or something and it leans to one side,  I'm sure you'll like that one.

Thanks     TF

Good morning from the sunny as usual West Coast of the GWN. I am trying to talk myself into some pressure washing but just as my mind is just about convinced to go outside and get started my body pours another cup of coffee.Laugh The pot is now empty so the body will need a new excuse.

Went to a get together at my sisters and a vice president of one of Canada,s RRs (who lives in the midwest U.S.) was there along with a couple of Locomotive engineers, so of course I was right in there on the conversation. He mentioned that there is some sort merger\takeover deal being discussed with the Union Pacific that so far has slipped beneath the radar of most as he hasn't seen it being talked about. He seemed to indicate that if it went through UP would stay intact but ownership would change.

I think it was in 2004 that preliminary surveys were done to connect CN to the Alaska RR. I just read that the State has given approval for the plan to be put into action and get the wheels rolling on it. Sniffing out a good investment I immediatly went to investigate stock prices and balance sheets. the Alaska RR is owned by the State. How is a guy like me suppose to make any money in such a socialist country.LaughSmile, Wink & Grin

Larry, I hope you guys get a layout at your place, do you still have your stuff?

Issac, I have many friends that grew up living around the world and most loved it. The ones that didn't like it as much at the time began to cherish the experience as they grew into adulthood. Many of them are now doing what their parents did and are teaching or doing missionary work across the globe.

My nephew just got back from Syria and Greece, he was doing missionary work there. I threw some money his way to help out. Even though I am a heathen, both my sister and my wifes nephew are very involve with their respective churches and do a lot of work helping refugees. I think it is good work and I am glad to help with funds.

Just watched a live product announcement from Rapido on FB. Amtrak and the Rio Grand Ski train were among the offerings. I like the way Jason is up front about what they can and cannot do and the cost involved.

Wife is really into the moving mode, I think it is time as my Daughter is off to University in September, I just can't get excited at this point in time, too much else going on.

Okay I am really going outside this time so by for now.

All the best to all.

Good Afternoon All,

Brent, amazing how big a mere 4-8-4 can be. Never get that over the viaduct into NYC.

Done with w**k for the day and now to find some aluminum bits to fiddle into the base for the liftout. It will go at the end of the yards to bridge the gap to the outer tracks along the wall.

Commander..... was big business in this old town way back when,  that's why historically preserved.

I don't know..... you'd have to be there,  The Old Mill leans a little to the left.  I can always see it.  Perfect!   Isn't the building beautiful?

Someone smart bought the building and made a business downstairs and has living accommodations overlooking the river upstairs,  maybe for the merchant.

The mini weekend trip is over now,  I'm home.  Thanks for tuning in.  It was great to have you alongSmile

See ya soon.   TF

Oh,  I did get a picture of my little friend the Blue Heron.

I always consider them kind of a prehistoric bird.  I tried to get a little closer for a better picture,  quite spooked,  old blue flew away.

Good Evening,

A day of thunder storms and showers here but we sure needed the rain.

TF, I have enjoyed your travelogue.  Sounds like you had a great time.

Today I took the car in for an oil change. It cost $85 which seems like a lot but then again I go to the dealership. Part of the reason for the high cost is that the car takes 8 litres of oil which is about 8 quarts. It is only a 3.2 litre engine but they build Volvos with very large oil pans. The engine in my 2000 S70 was only 2.4 litres and I seem to recall it took 6 litres or so. They also found a leak in a vacuum pump which will cost about $400 to fix. Oh well at least they caught it. Then I paid the property tax bill.  All that really set me up for the day so I'm drinking a large glass of wine right now. It is a French wine from the Saumur area that my sister gave me as they don't drink. It is well past its prime but still not vinegar. Must have been nice 10 years ago.

I went through my HO rolling stock and decided to put my Rapido baggage car on the block. It is really nice but I will never have any other Rapido cars as they are just too long for my little layout.

Tomorrow we are going out for lunch with my wife's uncle who is visiting from Victoria. He is a great guy and I always enjoy his visits. He got a fine arts degree at age 66 and has just completed grade 8 piano at age 83. Don't know where he gets the energy.

Think I'll watch TV tonight but then again that is what I do most nights. I wonder if I'm in a rut.

Yep,  you are in a rut....  blast off for the weekend with your wife and see what you never seen before that is really close to you.  You will be surprised how much there is to do within an hour of your home.  You'll have a great time!

Ready get set,  GO!

 TF

PS.   Quit going to the dealer and find a personal mechanic like I did,  Damian,  a private mechanic that takes care of meYes  He always comes out half price of everyone else and I tip him because he's so decent to me.  These guys are out thereYes

I got some news about my back problems on Monday. The MRI showed that I have two bulging discs that are both putting pressure on my spinal chord. That probably explains why I was experiencing so much pain after physiotherapy. All of the various stretching and bending exercises were putting additional pressure on the discs which in turn pressed on my spinal chord. The pressure is also causing spinal stenosis which on occasion makes my legs feel very weak.

I will have to see a Neurologist to determine whether or not surgery is called for. I won't be terribly enthused if I have to go under the knife again, but at least now I know what the problem likely is. The light at the end of the tunnel is that, if the pressure on my spinal chord can be relieved, the pain might just go away. That would be a miracle!

Been there...     That's why I mentioned for you to go easy on yourself when you mentioned you were digging out roots of shrubs back on the 9th of May.  Whistling

Even though the pain was neutralized, temporarily, you were still putting a great deal of stress on those vertebrae and your lumbar disks.

I'd like to find a copy of the film they showed me after my surgery about how much stress the disks go through during ordinary day-to-day lifting, bending, twisting and such. Plus all those nerves that are intertwined around everything.

Between my injury and the time I got the surgery, I would suspend myself using a handle bar I made and I rigged it up to a hoist at work. I would hang there, kind of like an anti-gravity sling. It would actually relieve the pressure on the disks and in-turn, the nerve pain.

Removing the "bulge" part of the disk was all I needed. If they start talking about a laminectomy, or a vertebroplasty. That's more involved and not quite as easy to deal with. They cement two or three of your vertabrae into one solid mass.

I hope your outcome is good, Dave Yes

Regards, Ed

Seriously, if the pain can be relieved I will do whatever they want. My back issues are seriously interfering with what Dianne and I would like to be able to do in retirement. Right now I don't want to travel anywhere. We cancelled our trip to Point Pelee because I could barely walk and sitting in the car for 4 1/2 hours would have been impossible even with breaks.

It is good to know that your problem was addressed.

Cheers!!

I could barely walk and sitting in the car for 4 1/2 hours would have been impossible even with breaks.

There were times when I spent the entire day at home crawling on hands and knees to get around. The Collies loved it, playtime all day Cowboy  I could sit and drive the 45 min. to w**k but once I got there I had to "roll" out of the truck, then climb my way to an upright stance by clinging to anything I could grab.

I would caution some of my younger coworkers about improper lifting and doing stupid things that is damaging your body but, alas, it all fell on youthful ignorant ears.

My surgery only required a very small incision and one night in hospital. Maybe today it is even quicker?

I wish you well, my friend...

Cheers, Ed

I wish you well, my friend...

Thank you Ed,

You have been a great help to me on so many occasions that I can't even count them. I'm not quite as bad as you were back pain wise, yet anyhow, but the pain sure takes the fun out of life. I feel really bad now because Dianne, who also has a sore back, is doing most of the daily chores around the house and she is making almost all of the meals. I love to cook, but now making a meal is very hard to get through. Surgery seems to be the next logical step.

Thanks for your support!

Good Morning All,

A regular to go please Zoe. And maybe a blueberry filled doughnut too please. Dave and Ed, I haven't had it as bad I guess but I have been in the crawl and pull oneself up thing. I have tried to be careful since then but every once in a while I end up at the bone crusher to straighten it all up. It seems better now that I try to use the weight bench which has a pull up weight thingy. My boss in a previous lifetime got blown up by a land mine in Nam and he used to hang by his hands from an I beam in the shop when his back went out. Not advocating any of that, I just hope the docs can come up with a plan that works for you and I have just an inkling of what you are going through.

Still cleaning in the basement. I am determined to clear the entire hobby bench as well as the bench I use to assemble large buildings and the layout. Anyone sell stuff on E-bay? Is it easy to sign up and do? Does one get swamped with fees? I have so much stuff I think I can get rid of some and the only other idea I have is to rent a table at a train show and I'm not sure I want to try packing/unpacking it all. I'd just like an idea of how it all works before I jump in.

All for now. I have a full day ahead plus.    Cheers, J.R.

Morning, everyone.  I'll have my usual coffee and a donut, Zoe.

Ken - That video was amazing.  I laughed so hard my gut hurt.  Thanks for posting that.

Dave - Sorry to hear about your back issues.  My father in law had a similar issue, but they couldn't do much with it because they caught it too late.  He ended up with a couple rods to keep his back straight in that area.  Should keep it from getting worse, at least.   I hope you get better news about treatment.

Got another coat of paint on the new porch rails yesterday.  Now I just need to clean the posts and go over the whole thing once more with a top coat and that project is done.  Then I'll be getting back to finishing the weeding on the gardens and putting down the rest of the mulch.

But of course the darn whirlygigs are coming down from the trees.  Hopefully, the mulch will keep them from sprouting little maple trees everywhere like in years past.

Railroad wise, I'm going to try to start working on more scenery on my little ISL today or tomorrow.  I picked up some light gray ballast to use for gravel parking lots, as well as some ground foam for general purpose use, so we'll see how that goes, I suppose.  Gonna review some books and articles I have.  It might just be a practice layout, but I still wanna get it right.

- Adam

Good Morning,

TF, short trips are indeed good but we just came back from 3 weeks in Africa at the end of April so the travel budget is indeed blown for this year and likely next.

Dave, sorry to hear about your back. My wife had what sounds to be a similar problem 25 years ago. She had a herniated disc and was in agony sitting. The disc fluid eventually shrunk back but she can't lift much and can't stand for any length of time. We had to wait in line for about an hour in Toronto to board our plane a couple of months ago and her back hurt for a couple of days afterwards.

Ken, a racoon would probably figure out how to use the catapult. We had one last year that unscrewed the top off a fish food container. He did it twice. Two nights ago I was slow in getting the bird feeders in and one took down a feeder, disassembled it and ate the contents. They are very smart.

Well time to get ready to go out for our lunch with Carol's uncle.

Lion,

Now that I see it, I don't think the third rail is a guard rail - more likely a ground strap. I can see the supply and slot for the power shoe so It would need a separate ground for elevated use, no?

And if it works, a little music from the homeland for you.

Sorry about your back Dave.

Back pain is the worst there is.  I can definitely sympathize for you.  Anytime my back has been out, nothing else quite works either.  It all works together.

I wish I could wish you out of your pain brother.

You have been added to my list for every night I talk to the man upstairs before I go to sleep.

Last week I had my dentist remove a third cracked molar.  Apparently I grind my teeth hard at night and need to be fitted for a night guard.  They cost about 600 bucks but it's cheaper than the near 2,000 I paid up till now to get three teeth extracted.  I have no insurance.  I am ruining my own teeth while I sleep at night.

Isn't that lovely, the joys of getting oldSadTongue Tied

I will continue to pray for RR Mel too.  He has some serious back pain as well.  I feel for you guys,  I only hope things get better for you both.

Good Evening,

Brent, nice photo of that CP Northern. I'm sure you know but that is one of 2 Northerns owned by CP. One of them is on display in Regina. J.R. is right in that it is a big loco,  built on the same boiler as the Selkirks. Apparently CP didn't like them much.  CN on the other hand had more Northerns than any other road in North America.

TF, good suggestion about getting an independent mechanic. That is what I used when I had a 'domestic' but Volvos have a lot of computers and you need special software to access. I read somewhere that it is either very expensive or not for sale so off to the dealer you go. I have had great service from them so I can't complain too much about the cost.

Had a nice visit with Carol's uncle and we are now just relaxing in the back yard. Well I will be just as soon as I sign off. So without further ado,

CN Charlie

Evening all, it is 1809hrs on the beautiful West Coast. We are nine minutes past the time I should have had a Rum and pepsi in my hand.

The final container of Royal Hudsons arrived at Rapido. It was an agonizing five weeks watching them make their way across the world. I feel sorry for the guy in Australia that has to watch his make its way to the Southern hemisphere.

418 cartons in a 20' container.

Hope to have mine by June 20th.

Sorry to hear about your back issues Dave. The first step to a fix is finding out what's wrong. If the IMS helps with the pain you need to behave yourself after the treatment. No wrestling with the wife.WhistlingLaugh

Charlie, those Northerns are monsters. I have been keeping my eyes open for a brass one but they are terrible runners from all I have heard. I don't have the expertise to tinker them to a successful conclusion. One would still look great in the yard though.

TF, hittin the road on the sperm of the moment (as Archie Bunker use to say) is what I am famous for I would just go get on a plane and go somewhere. Had my own parking spot right at the terminal at Vancouver International airport, always had my passport with me and if I hit a wall with burnout I could just tell the boss I was taking a month off and at the end of the day I would get on a plane. I always had a go bag in the car. Usually I would go somewhere warm and would just buy a toothbrush, a couple of pairs of shorts and teeshirts and all was good.

I worked copious amounts of overtime and banked all my OT as time off. Every week at work I earned at least a week off in OT. Of course I didn't take that much time off and at the end of the year they would pay me out another years wages as I couldn't carry it over. The last ten years I was working I got 8 weeks vacation as well. When I packed it in I had 17 weeks of that in the bank they paid me out for.

Ken, the video was funny I guess there really is such a thing as a flying squirrel.Laugh

Charlie, my F-350 7.3 ltr diesel takes 14 litres of oil. I am past wanting to do my own work on the vehicles.

Enjoying the pics all are posting, next round is on me. Had lobster sushi last night, boy was it good.

Now where's that Rum.

All the best to all.

I have to say I was very intrigued by your reference to your trip to Africa.

My Grandfather,   My favorite person in the whole world took three trips to fulfill his dream.

Africa,  Hawaii,  Alaska.

I hope to at least go to one or two someday but someday never seems to come.

I really wish you would elaborate on your trip to Africa here.  I would be interested in what you have to say about your experiences of your trip as I'm sure many others here would be interested as well.

Please share your trip to Africa.

Thank you    John
