Ulrich, you returned, when I predicted, though I thought they would have kicked you out by now.

Ulrich, you returned, when I predicted, though I thought they would have kicked you out by now.

They probably would have, if everything had worked out they way it should have. Something didn´t go well, as I didn´t wake up when I was supposed to. That´s why they keep me under a close watch for another week.

I started to assemble my fake Lego kit, which had arrived while I was flat out. I gave up after a few minutes. Those hospital bedside things are not big enough for that job. I´ll be keeping that for when I am back home.

Happy times!

Good evening folks,

Ulrich I am glad you are in recovery!

Well today was freaky Friday, not going to go through everything that went on today but it was pretty weird.

Wrapped up putting the new radiator into my truck about a half hour ago, had to modify the radiator and fan shroud to get it to line up, I went from a 1 row to a 2 row radiator so I should be good now.

At work one of the lifeguards bet I couldn't perform the procedure, me and her really get along great and go back and forth a lot, I'll be there bright and early tomorrow to show her my handiwork.

Well that's all from me.

Foo.  Besides the section that couldn't make it up the stairs, another long piece (3 sections) will have to be broken down just to fit in the room.  Well, I have wanted the carfloat terminal out of the back corner anyway.

I'm probably going to have to rebuild the subway, too.  Scolley Square station, an old Boston reference, was pretty much demolished by the move, and the South Ferry station will have to move for room size reasons.  Well, the subway was the first track I put down and over the years I realized a few things I could have done better.  I would like circular tube tunnels in places instead of square cross sections, and I would love to see the subway trains surface for a short run over a bridge.  I can probably salvage most of the Penny Lane and Saint Anne Street stations.

Does anyone remember who made the electronics to have trains stop at stations and finally reverse at the ends?  The more I think about the new subways, the more I think about making it a point to point rather than a loop.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Ulrich anything he wants.

Ulrich Hospital Beds are good for one thing, making you want to get out of the hospital!

Today Started Out Great! Got the front yard cut before work then things starting going down hill from there. Sigh

Ed I was not shocked by the prices! I have priced them before and I had hoped maybe they have went down? Whistling Far as the Train Line Track Cleaning Cars, I have 6 of them I think. They seem useless for the past few years. Maybe if I take the pads off and soak them in alcohol they work better?

Far as smoking. Tonight I went to Wal Mart Market on the way home after work. When I passed two ladys smoking in the parking lot I could smell there smoke 50 feet away from them and it stunk! I know some cigaratte stink more than others but these were awful!

 None smoking Ken day 52.

Good morning.  Another cool, 68°, rainy morning.  This year I feel like I'm living in Seattle with each day cool and rainy.

Have not worked much on the layout.  Had some medical issues and dental issues that chew (!) up time.  This weekend we have grandkids visiting, and they require full time attention.

I've finished a second control panel, and I'm getting ready to start another building -- something I enjoy the most.  Before I started a layout, I would not have guessed that scratch-building structures would be something I like doing the most.

If Lion can quit chewing raw wildebeast for a bit, I'll bet he is the most qualified to answer any question like this.

I have enjoyed reading all the comments for Brent Batman's question about the indoor pool.  Two of my three kids live in warm areas of the country.  One has a pool with spa that is used everyday, and the other is planning a pool.  Of course, they have the means to never worry about cleaning or working on it -- they just have someone else do that.  If Brent does decide to convert the pool room to a layout room, it will be the best-looking train room ever.  The wood ceiling alone looks great.

Ulrich, glad the surgery is over, and the problems resolved.  Now get the strength up for your next adventure in moving.

That's all for today.  The grandkids need me to help open the Barbie doll airplane so Barbie can be the stewardess.  This will occupy their attention for at lest two minutes.

Automation of LION is paw-made by said LION. No microchips got blown up in its construction.

In world of LION, the port-side rail is GROUND. Starboard Rail at (+) voltage makes train go forwared. (-) voltage makes train go backwards. [Moot point on rail road of LION since subway trains do not go backwards.

LION embeds gaps approaching and leaving stations, bridged with 5.1 ohn resistors, to slow the train as it approaches, and open gap stops the train. A relay across an open gap at the head of the station allows the train to resume.

When train arrives at terminal a rectifyer across the last gap stops the train until power is reversed. You will need to conjure a timing relay that will be activated when trains arrives at terminal, time runs out, reversing switch changes polarity and off you go!

In Terminals LION uses HOME SIGNALS, Him must operate signals and switches from the tower. But since you want automactiation it requires more thinking.

Details of da LIONS operation can be found in his operations manual. (see pg 15)

If he did I dought they are still shiny or red!

Especially not if he was in the US right now! It seems to me that the whole midwest is engulfed in rain. And here in Michigan we seem to be unable to decide between rail and sun, two days ago was constant rail and today is the hottest day all summer (or so it seems!)

My grandpa did that last year, and rode in the cab of their 10 wheeler, he said it was quite dirty but I think he liked it!

The Nevada Northern would make a nice model railroad, only issue is all the locos and most of the rolling stock would need to be costum painted, still, an interesting operation!

Another foo.  The DCC auto reverser was made by Tam Valley, but the are discontinued because they were too finicky.  Too bad.  The info on them sounded very good, but the owner got tired of servicing them.

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Ulrich what ever he wants!

I will sure be glad when the monsoon season is over here in ILL. I wanted to cut the back jungle but it was Storm Lightning most of the day. Sigh

I have been fighting with the railroad most of the day.

PRR I1sa Think I found the cause of the lack of traction. Last night I hardly got around the layout the last time, it was slipping and sliding like it was in snow! This afternoon I pulled from the rails to clean the drivers. Rear driver wheels had oil dripping off the sides of the wheel! Bang Head It was the dang smoke fluid leaking out? Angry

Turn the smoke on and ran the smoke out of it and it stunk. Worse part I had to sit right in front it while I did it. I am sure I will have to clean the under side agin a few times!

None smoking Ken hating smoke fluid again!

 Later

Greetings from the Southern Command. We are returning from the Big Easy, Spent 3 days there on Book Tour # 3 . We stayed in the Garden District and I talked MRS MLC into taking the streetcars everywhere we needed to go . We only had to drive to one event. I had never ridden the streetcars, but recommend it. We bought and unlimited “Jazzy Pass”  for $9 for three days of unlimited rides.  We visited the quarter some ( almost too touristy tacky) I had Beignets at Café du Monde ( A NOLA must)  Heard a lot of street bands.  Last Night we went and heard Ellis Marsalis and his Quintet ( Father of Wynton, Branford , Jason and Delfeayo Marslais, also teacher to Harry Connick Jr. ) The venue was small enough that we could have reached out to the stage and touched Ellis, superb show, made the whole trip worth it.
We did not do many touristy things ,(we did tour a cemetery) nor did we act like tourists so I never felt unsafe. As long as you stay out of the questionable areas and don’t get plastered or act like a  tourist one will be fine.  We had tourists asking us things as if we were locals and the funny thing was I could answer their question and tell them how to get there.
I saw some New Orleans Public Belt RWY and KCS trains down by the river at the quarter,
Next book event is Nashville
I heard we had some bad weather yesterday at my home in KY , all kinds of damage by straight line winds, My Neighbor called me and said everything was OK at my house. She lost part of  a tree.

I will be heading to Kalamazoo in July for an antique radio event.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A Cola Float please. Thanks.

Ulrich - Glad you are on the mend.

Ken - I would check local train shows for the CMX and Centerline cars. I found a used CMX car, without box, sitting on a table at a local show one day, and asked the gentleman how much he wanted for it. When he said a very reasonable amount, I quickly purchased it. It was on a table with a few other nice gems mixed in with a bunch of "train set quality" items, so I think that many missed it sitting there. I won't say exactly how cheaply I got it, but will say I paid more for the centerline car than I did that CMX....

Steven NWP - Glad to hear you got the vehicle repaired.

Speaking of vehicle front - Signed the paperwork for my new (to me) car today, and while it is a few years old (2011), it only had 47,000 miles, and was garage kept, so is very clean! So, I now have a light blue CR-V sitting in my driveway. My old car (an 2006 Escape) was getting to where it would need more fixed than what I was willing to do, as it would need major body work (both outer and inner rear fenders, as well as rear shock supports.) as well as a bit of motor work for a oil leak.

On a vehicle now 13+ years old, with over 140,000 miles, it would be a lot of time and money that would do very little to affect the value of the car in the eyes of the insurance companies, should something happen. (Like a 4-legged critter jumping onto the hood to breakdance...) I feel them giving me a couple grand for trade and discounts off the newer car was pretty reasonable, and having a decently low payment was worth it.

(While I dislike being a member of the "book-of-the-month-club", I could not afford to just buy a vehicle outright right now.)

That just means a little less train money for a bit... But, a nice railfan vehicle out of the deal, so I won't complain.

Well, I'm off to the sleeper berth, hope all are well, and all enjoy the rest of the night!

 Ken, From June 2nd...

cudaken
Ed when you test ran the Mighty I1sa Hippo did it smoke? Yes the smoke switch is thrown and I added some BLI smoke fluid.

gmpullman
I'm 99.9% certain I had the switch turned off. I forget how the switch was positioned when I put it back in the box? You only need about 3-4 drops of fluid.

cudaken
This afternoon I pulled from the rails to clean the drivers. Rear driver wheels had oil dripping off the sides of the wheel!Bang Head

Did you put THREE drops of fluid in or four DROPS? Any more than that is TOO Much!

The last time we talked I was going to tell you when you said the smoke unit wasn't working that sometimes the cause is TOO much fluid!!!

I guess you figured that outWhistling

The factory fill is probably good for a whole day of running without adding any more. Use it all up before adding any more!

This smoke unit was from a PRR T1. It burned and shorted even though it was physically switched OFF! Wiped out the decoder, too. Engine was just sitting, address wasn't even selected. Just started sparking, and smoking, but it was the wires burning, not smoke fluid!

 IMG_8095_fix by Edmund, on Flickr

I despise smoke units and the smell of the smoke. Don't know why anyone would want one of those puffing around the layout.

Glad this didn't cause YOU to light up Cool I have no use for smoking HO models Ick!

Cheers, Ed

Good late evening.

Went to my Daughters grad ceremonies at the school last night, I was proud yet sad as we have been so involved with the school for the last 15 years with our two kids. We will be empty nesters come September and need to do some adjusting on the home front and get set up for childless retirement. I retired ten years ago and the wife eight years ago.

Like it was with hockey the new parents want to take over the duties coaching and volunteering and rightly so. I started coaching baseball right out of Highschool and was active with hockey right up until my #1 son headed off to University. I yield to the young parents. Laugh

We still have the formal ceremony in Vancouver on the 28th, a real hoity toity affair and a long way to go for all involved. I bought a new suit two years ago for my sons and that is the last time I wore it.Laugh Getting dressed up is not my thing.

I had a long post two days ago that went poof when I hit submit, i think it is the computer I am using, I like the MAC way better.

Ken, keep up the good work on the smoking front, I am really happy it is going well for you.

I have only worked out once in the last two weeks as I have been sick and the Arthritis has not been kind either, tomorrow I will get back to it come ... or high water.

Ulrich, good to see you on the mend. Can't remember how long my Mom was in Hospital after her bypass. She had the nurses come to the house several times a day until they came just once a day and then stopped altogther, she had great care and attended the exercise sessions at the hospital for a long time afterwards.

This house hunting is tiring and with the wifes Mom going downhill all of a sudden I think we need to give it a rest, at least we don't have to move and can do so at our leasure.

Time to hit the sack. All the best to all.

Make excellence a habit not a goal.

Batman, thanks for the link to the “Biggest Little Railway in the World”. It went well with this mornings first coffee. I see its build is a TV series but I’d be surprised if it was shown here, more’s the pity. Not enough angst, or plain nastiness between the participants to make for a visual feast!
My 2 Cents Her-in-doors and I were told that when the kids leave the nest to make their mark on the world, then the parenting preparing them for this, was Good. However, with all the changes to their lives, I wouldn’t be so quick to sell up the family home: after all, if everything went absolutely pear shaped for them, as highly unlikely as that maybe, it is still regarded as their anchor/ safe place. My 2 Cents

Yay, I got my computer working, although I can't find my wireless connector and will have to go buy one.

But, after a year of posting from this stupid tablet, I will be able to use a real computer again, and finally post pictures.

I still have a lot of work to do on reconfiguring the layout, and I have no idea where my good camera is, but all in good time.

Good morning from a cool and cloudy West Coast.

Bear, the family home will always be the family home and the kids can come home whenever they want and stay as long as they want.

My wife and her siblings were thrown to the wolves at the end of high school and at forty I had a lot of debt to pay off from her ten years of University. I feel it is a parents responsibility to make sure their kids are educated and that includes University. I have been lucky with my son as he has made plenty doing movies and has not needed help. I want them to hit the ground running after University not mired in debt.

My daughter is heading out to their grad camping trip tomorrow and I am loading up the truck to take in supplies for their two nights. It is 2 1/2 hours North of Vancouver and cars need to be left at the highway as the road is strictly for off road vehicles. I think 75 kids are going so we will be loaded up. I then come home and go back on Wednesday to help bring them out. It's about 7 hours round trip and I will probably have to help with tents and things so it will be a long day. Lots of bears in the area so I am giving bear spray lessons. Apparently there is an adult with a shotgun onsite in case a Grizzly shows up and wants to party instead of moving on.Laugh

These kids are great, they are all super brains and I am sure the two days will be like watching "The Big Bang Theory" with 75 Sheldons.Laugh

Time to go do something.

All the best to all.

Still Monsoon Season here in ILL. Well I guess that is Ok because I felt like ash pitt. My blood sugar crashed this morning around 3:15 AM, it was down to 44! Got the blood surgar up but I felt bad the rest of the day.

Brent My dad told me had two choices when I turned 18. I could move out, or I could move out? I joined the Army.

Ed I think the smoke unit was on. But I guess I over filled it, I don't remember if it was in the booklet or I was told at K-10 Model Trains but I added 6 drops of the junk!

 Later, none smoking Ken

Well, Ken appears to be having issues with a smoke unit. Ken, you are accually the first time I've heard of someone accually using one. I really hate strong smell (except cookies baking in thee oven), some I don't think I will ever turn on a smoke unit, EVER!

When I was younger I went on a train shop shopping spree with my grandpa. The most expensive item purchased was a (used) BLI USRA light mikado decorated in Union Pacific. The thing was the first steamer I ever ran and hade all the bells and whistles, including a sound decoder (this was ten years ago when that wasn't as common as it is today) and a smoking unit. I, being younger, though a smoking steamer would be really cool, but my grandpa said it would dirty up the track, so it was never used.

About the Biggest Little Railway, I must admit, I really took a while to get what was going on. It is pretty impressive though. I think the used some weird metal rail section with like code 2000 rail or something!

If I ever build a railroad that size though, I think I'll add enough sidings and spurs to allow for operations. I wonder if they every ran a train on it again...

Of course it isn't quite train mountain, which has only half as many scale miles, but more actual miles!

Have a good evening everyone!

Regards, Isaac

Just saying hi to all!

I am starting to feel a little better. Breathing has improved, but the pain in my chest is still nagging. We have lot´s of sunshine in my neck of the woods, which makes a hospital stay not at all pleasant, as the rooms have no A/C. Today´s high was 85F and we expect 92F tomorrow. Quite a lot!

Doctors say I might be out by Thursday!

Happy times!

Good morning.  Something strange this morning -- the sun is actually out today. For the first time in memory, rain is not predicted for the next several days.

I enjoyed the "Biggest Little Railway".  Years ago a BBC show with Jeremy Clarkson had a group who built a very long railroad.  I could not find it on youtube -- not sure if anyone remembers that.

While ,we are in Montana, let us not forget fallen flag, Milwaukee Road.  Here is  video of MILW operating in Montana. Their "Little Joe" electirc locomotves were MU'ed with diesels.

I have never been around an electric railway (other than New Orleans streetcars and NYC subways).  Standing by the track, were the locomotives quiet?  Just something I've always wondered.

N Scale gas station finished and lights hooked up.  Surrounding area needs landscaping.  Not sure in real life if I'd want the gas station just feet away from the mainline.  Still had trouble getting roof angles correct.  I may try to build a new roof with angles a little different.  There's a reason I never became a carpenter.  Still enjoy scratch building structures the most of anything with the layout.

With the sun shining, I may actually get the lawnmower out and try cut the jungle.

Lion, I missed reading why you are unable to get to the layout room.
