Good Morning, America (and that includes Canada)!
Thanks, Ed, for moving the diner and thanks to Brent for being our this month´s host in the beautiful southwest of Canada!
I can´t believe it´s already November, but I am glad October is over! October has been really a bad month for us, starting out with my MIL´s accident, from which she only slowly recovers. My BIL is still in the hospital after falling into a diabetes-induced coma. He also is on his road to recovery, but it´s going to be quite some time until he will be able to take care of himself again. Luckily, his children support him quite well!
I will officially be (forcibly) retired in August next year, which means a sharp drop in monthly income, actually way below what we have now, which is at poverty line level. We will not be able to afford the place we live in today. While I don´t mind leaving this place, finding decent living quarters at a much lower rent than our current is impossible. From August next year on, we will have less than $100 a month left to feed the two of us. I am at my wit´s end trying to figure out how and where we will continue to live after that date. There are days when I just want to close my eyes and don´t wake up anymore.
Pardon for not heing a happy camper any longer.
Happy times!

I hope everyone is well this beautiful first of November... Ulrich, I hope there is some way to find relief. Decent people should not have to suffer. My thoughts are with you for a fast recovery for your family members.

Oh, right ... lets' bring out a pot of coffee and some donuts flo, have it all right here as the guys come in and shake off the rain.
So, I got my first run of prototype boards for me light controller, and I made an oops with one of the capacitor sizes (and also two of the traces).
Meh, I've made more expensive and significantly longer lead-time mistakes. This one's just "no pizza on Friday", and waiting another week or two on shipping.
THEN it'll be time to break out the soldering iron and have loads of lead-based fun.

Go into business for yourself maybe? Dunno what that's like over in Germany, but I found it to mainly be "checklist" type things here:
- get a federal tax ID
- tell the state my federal tax ID
- get a biz bank account
- ???
- Profit
... although I'm still working on that last one...
Sorry, but things work completely different here. There is so much red tape involved, requiring an enormous amount of upfront money, which prohibts any idea of being self-employed. Believe me, if that had been a viable option, I´d have gone down that route a long time ago.
aw
All I can find is "how to come to Germany and start your own company", not "how to do it as a German citizen" (thank you, geowhatsit).
Perhaps a move out to a less populated area would offer some respite? I dunno, just throwin' out ideas ...
Dan - thanks for your thoughts. There is hardly a thought (and a try) I have not done in the last 10 years. Simple fact in Germany is, that you just can´t open up a business without being licensed for it. You cannot - just as an example - make lovely pies and sell them without being a trained baker. Y>ou cannot open a hair shop without being a trained hair stylist. Germany has a set of rules and regulations coming from medieval times, which are eagerly watched out for by the local trade commissions to keep competition at a low level. Aside from that and other fiscal atrocities (like VAT pre-payments), no one would lend any money to a 63-year old opening up a business, which is doomed to fail in this crazy society. Now if we were to liuve in the US, Petra would make German pies and cakes and I would market them - we probably would esarn more than just our keep.
But that will remain a dream.
I forget to mentione, that we already live "out in the country" in a low rent housing.
Hey Janie, how 'bout a coupla scrambled eggs with onions and red peppers and a double order of back bacon. I know y'all don't serve grits, so toss in some toasty brown hash browns and a biscuit or two, eh. And keep the coffee coming. Thanx.

Good morning from an extremely wet but always Beautiful British Columbia.
Thank you for letting me be tour guide this month, I hope to talk about the railways that operate here as they are pushed to the max in this resource-rich part of the world. Along the way, snippets of culture and lifestyle will be thrown in, including some of my pastimes as I have grown up.
British Columbia, for the most part, is untamed wilderness. Here are some comparisons to give some perspective.
Maryland 32,000 sqkm Pop 6M
Texas 696,000 sqkm Pop 28.3M
Germany 358,000 sqkm Pop 82.5M
British Columbia 945,000 sqkm Pop 4.8M
I keep telling everyone that we are shipping Canada abroad, one railcar at a time. However, the vast size of the Province and its abundance of natural resources equates to a very high standard of living for the minuscule 4.8 million of us that share its wealth.
Here is the shameless opening video. Hopefully, by the end of the month, you will be wanting to come and visit and bring us even more money.
At 2:50 of the video there is a guy standing on top of a mountain overlooking Vancouver. I have done this climb a few times. It starts at sea level and takes about nine hours to get up. While ropes are not required it is straight up all the way. I would take my Golden Retriever and would have to strap her to my back for some of the rock climbing bits. The peak is one of two called the Lions that stand like sentinels guarding the city. It is a killer hike.

In light of my forced vacation I prepped around 200 more trees, ordered some stuff to finish a few projects and won some rolling stock kits on evil bay. I should be able to keep busy.
Speaking of train stuff, I picked up a bunch of engines from my decoder installer guy after he got the decoders in. I have one old BB U-boat that runs great forward but about half as fast backward. Didn't really notice this when I test ran it, I usually just send them off to Trevor.I've done the usual fixes,i.e. greased gears, changed out the wheelsets for nickle silver from NWSL,cleaned up the comutator. The usual washing machine noise subsided with more run-in time. Short of completely tearing down the gear towers, any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

I don't think that's it. It's the center unit in a 3 engine consist, and I know Trevor speed matches them. Maybe only in forward this time? I'll bring them back after I talk it over with him.I gave him 15 units to do, he could have slipped up. No worries, he's close by.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
I have been to BC twice in my life - back in 1973 and again in 1978. I 1973, my US fióster family took me to Victoria, BC. We took the "Coho" from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca on a stormy December day. I remember everyine being quite ill, but not I - I was just hungry. We stayed in the famous Empress Hotel. The time was spent doing a lot of Christmas shopping and sightseeing. In 1978, I went to Vancouver, which was a rather serene city with a distinct British charme in those days. How things have changed since!
I am struck by insomnia again. The worry about our future keeps me from sleeping. I am scared stiff about what lays ahead of us.

I made use of another sleepless night by digging up some old pictures from my 1978 visit to Vancouver. The picture quality is bad, as the 110 film cameras didn´t have much of a resolution. Being stored in an album also had its effects on the color.

Good Morning...
Since we are reminiscing about the travels of our youth, I'd like to share the film of my 1974 cross-Canada ride on the C-N.
This was a "working" vacation for me, and I loved every minute of it, although it was a bit of a challenge at times.
I served the meals, made the beds and kept the car tidy and made sure the mechanical and operational chores were done. We were five weeks traveling literally from coast-to-coast. I boarded the ex C&O business car #3 in Toledo, Ohio, from there to Detroit, Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa then westward to Vancouver with stop-overs in several cities.
On the way back we returned via Toronto, Detroit then on to Chicago to then take the C&O to Newport-News, Virginia. Whew, what a blast!
C&O #3, built as the Hussar in 1921 for Marjorie Merryweather Post is still running in private car service today, almost a hundred years! Amazing.
I hope everyone is doing well on this fine Friday...

Good Afternoon,
Some white stuff falling from the sky at present. Not sure what it could be. Hopefully it will warm up to the forecast high of 3C so I can pump out the pond to get it ready for winter.
Nice to be in B.C. I lived there for a year in 64/65 when I was in grade 12. We were in Coquitlam so I'm sure Brent knows about that location. I also travelled extensively throughout B.C. for my job especially in the '80s and '90s. We had stores in many small towns that got into financial trouble when interest rates went through the roof in that era, not to mention the general retail downturn in all small towns as people shifted shopping to larger centres. It sure is a beautiful part of the world.
Ulrich, sorry to hear about your troubles. I wish I could offer you something but I don't know anything about how supports work in Germany. Feel free to send me an message anytime if you would just like to chat.
Nothing new on the RR front. I did take in 2 N scale locos to sell on consignment at the local shop, a Model Power Pacific and an Intermountain F7.
Dave, any migrant birds left out your way? We still have a few Juncos coming through but not much else. The geese are coming over in large flocks most nights.
See you later,
CN Charlie
Good sunny morning from the West Coast, it is 16c after last nights big blow and torrential rain that kept us awake most of the night. Feeling pretty tired so it is the forum before the bike today and I might not make the bike.
Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, Burlington Northern, and Amtrack are the big operators in B.C. with the last two just dipping their toes into the Province. Amtrack runs from Seattle once or twice a day depending on the time of year and what's going on. Vancouverites like to go to Seahawks games and the folks from Seattle come up for Hockey. Making a long weekend out of the deal and having a comfortable train ride each way makes for an enjoyable time. BNSF runs up to Deltaport at Roberts bank with coal and container trains.
Ports and rail co-exist and neither would be the operations they are without the other. For this reason, today I will talk about the closest North American port to Asia, Prince Rupert. CN runs North through Edmonton, Jasper, Prince George to Prince Rupert. It is an incredibly scenic trip that would never get tired for a rail crew.
Prince Rupert was a town that had forest products and fishing as its big employers in the early years. It is rich as far as our native heritage goes and is still an unspoiled playground for those lucky enough to live there.
The port of Prince Rupert is expanding at a good clip as trade with Asia increases. The port is three days closer than Los Angeles for ships making the trip and that means ships save six days on a round trip. With our nearly instant gratification that comes with online ordering for business and consumers, speed is more important than ever for delivery of the goods. Container trains called "Hot Shots" run from Prince Rupert to central Canada, the U.S. Midwest, New York and down to the Gulf States. The containers can now be delivered to these places in the time where not too many years ago they would have just made port in Los Angeles. This is why CN and CP have been gobbling up U.S. railroads, it is good business to have full control over the whole line.
I have found some short promotional videos on the area and CNs "Yellowhead" route.
If anyone feels stuck in a rut and wants a good paying job, a nice home in a stunningly beautiful place, move to Prince Rupert. B.C./ Canada brings in foreign workers by the planeload from Asia, Australia, and New Zealand to fill the gap, it is amazing how many stay.
If I was young again, I would be taking a hard look at Prince Rupert.
The Yellowhead route is scenic and Via Rail is a nice trip from Edmonton West. Here are a few videos of varying quality.
International trade accounts for 64% of Canada's GDP, I wonder what Canada's founding fathers would be thinking about that when way back when they decided that building a railroad was one of the first orders of business. Tax dollars well spent, I'd say.
Not sure what part of the Province we will end up in tomorrow, stay tuned.
Ulrich, maybe you should have blurred the recent picture too!!! Just kidding! I won't post my picture until I lose 60 lbs.
Ed - I wonder how many people know that the big clock in the tower is steam driven (at least it was, I'm not sure about now)!
NWP SWPHere's the damages from last nights big blow.
Ouch! Sorry for your loss Steven. Those were pretty big trees. At least they only damaged your fence (new fence I believe) and not the house. You're going to get lots of time on the chainsaw! Do you have a fireplace?
We have a couple of big trees close to the house. So far they have managed to stay upright, but we don't get your Southern US nasty type weather up here very often.
CNCharlieDave, any migrant birds left out your way? We still have a few Juncos coming through but not much else. The geese are coming over in large flocks most nights.
There are still lots of ducks that only seem to get the message to go south when they have ice on their feet. Of course there are several flocks of Canada Geese going over the house every day. Other than that, those birds that are going to go south have done so.
Our feeders are still busy with the birds that stay. We have tons of Goldfinches, lots of Juncos and Chickadees, several Purple Finches, Cardinals, Downey and Hairy Woodpeckers, and both White and Red Breasted Nuthatches that enjoy our hospitality all winter. We go through almost 4 lbs each of nyjer seed and black sunflower seed in about 1 1/2 days. The waste pile under the nyjer feeder is getting huge! The pile under the sunflower seed feeder never gets big at all. Most of the birds that use it carry the seed away and then shell it, and the squirrels and chipmunks take care of any spillage.
I just hired a snow removal company and they agreed to plough a path to the feeders at no additional charge.
Thanks for asking,

Ulrich- staying at the Empress. That cost some serious coinage. Those old photos of Vancouver sure take me back, it is not the same place anymore. That old steam clock is still going strong, though it had some time off for a major rebuild.
Were you backpacking into the backcountry on your trip? I have done my fair share of that into the wilds. Some multi-day canoe trips as well.

Had a great week with the kid being home. He played hockey three times and that lets me get back to the rink to watch the kids. I get a kick out of them as even the 8 and 9-year-olds are looking mighty dapper when they walk in. Following Don Cherry's instructions, they need to look professional at all times. All in suits and you could tell they weren't cheap ones either.

His Mom dropped him at the airport to go back to Ottawa and he was waiting to board and started barfing his guts out. He messaged me on FB from the washroom and I asked him if he wanted me to come and get him if he was too sick to fly. He said no and got on the plane and was fine after about an hour, barf bag at the ready. He had some sketchy food after hockey the night before, we figured that was the culprit.
The kid got an offer from a movie agency while he was home. It was a biggie (the agency) They ask the talent to join their company (not the other way around) and take on a very limited clientele. It cost the company $325.00 and up to submit the kid for an audition so they must have a lot of interest in him.
He apparently has made really good impressions on a couple of jobs, especially Deadpool2. For never having had a line in a movie or TV show, the whole thing is a little bewildering. He did do a couple of auditions where he had lines and got the parts but had to withdraw when they changed the shooting schedule to when he was back at school in Ottawa. He declined the offer as school is his first priority and they may take him on for the summer which they don't normally do.
He was going to stay in Ottawa this Summer and work, but the movie stuff is such a nice change for him and pays so well, we will see. His friend is a producer with Chorus media and wants him to do contract work for him. Said he can work while on set and on days off. He use to do all his homework and essays on set when he was still in high school, so why not? (I guess) That kid has drive.
He has had two really good job offers while at University after doing projects for the two. Companies are trolling the kids before they even get their degree. He has so many directions he can go it is mind-boggling.
My daughters 17th Birthday today. As soon as they get back from riding their steeds we will likely go out for Sushi. She spent all day working at the soup kitchen today, way longer than she was scheduled to. I am so proud of her.

Actually, I did go on a backpacking trip with some frienfs from my high school days, but that was somewhere around Mt. St. Helens, which blew up 18 months after I was there. And, no, I didn´t put a long fuse down to let it go off!
Little Timmy - I remember a few quite unruly kids while visiting the "Missouri", but non of them had a tape measure with him/her.
Looking at today´s skyline of Vancouvr, the change has been rather dramatic! But not to the better, in my humble opinion. From what I have heard, real estate prices in and around Vancouver match or even surpass those of Beverly Hills theses days. This is crazy!
The “Wild within BC” video almost made me leap to my feet and burst into “Oh Canada” (there would be a fair bit of humming), sell up and emigrate, but I rather suspect that there already enough grumpy old bears over there!
BATMAN...move to Prince Rupert. B.C./ Canada brings in foreign workers by the planeload from Asia, Australia, and New Zealand to fill the gap
Thanks, Bear, for the hearty breakfast! There is nothing finer than a stack of pancakes, served with a tsunami of real Canadian maple syrup! It´ll have to wait until tomorrow, though - I just had my regular bowl of Muesli.
It was freezing cold last night, but now it is sunny and bright. The temperatures will not go much above 5°C and I am glad I have changed the tires on our car to the fur-lined ones.
No plans for the day - just surviving, somehow...
I don´t mind to have a few (well, not so few) strips of crisp fried bacon along with my pancakes, but please add a serving of scrambled eggs and two slices of buttered toast. You may hold the baked beans, though!

Good morning, everybody ...
I see a lot of photos and videos were posted since I briefly stopped here in the Diner yeasterday morning. ..... It will take a while to look at them.
I recall some good breakfast food we had when were were in BC.... A restaurant in Vancouver had some sort of breakfast caserole that was out of this world. Maybe they called it breakfast pie. It was sort of a quiche and was loaded with eggs, cheese, sausage pieces, and vegetables. Artichoke was one ingredient. Very filling.
We stayed in Whistler for a few days and one restaraunt had the best pancakes anywhere. .... Yum. ....
I'll get started catching up on your posts .
Cheers.

Through the railroad club my dad and I belonged to, which had quite a few old heavyweight cars they used for excursions, I met a fellow that was an Amtrak manager. In turn, he knew several of the "Private Varnish" owners. Word spread that there was a young fellow willing to work cheap. Oh, my. I lived like a king for a while there.

NeO6874 Tinplate Toddler tsunami of real Canadian maple syrup!
Tinplate Toddler
Actually I have heard that most of the Vermont stuff actually comes from New York State..... I get local Maple syrup from a local Mennonite farm here in the Finger Lakes. Absolutely fabulous! Had some last night. I had exactly that meal that Ulrich posted but without the ham, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and the home fries....... Yep just had pancakes w/ Maple Syrup for super! I fugure there was an egg added to the mix and the pancakes plus way too much syrup were more than enough to get my sugar back up almost to the high range. It did.... Highest reading (141) I have had before bed in six months. It was worth it!
It is currently 41°F with an 18 mph breeze outside here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS this morning. I have been looking out the window and watching leaves blowing off the trees in the neighborhood. If it ever stops raining, I have several things I need to get done before snow falls here. Carrots are still growing in the garden, need to be brought in. I finally got around to trim my bushes next to the house, which should have been done last spring, and need to rake up the trimmings, put it into bags, so the city can pick it up this fall. Would also like to trim the lower branches on the flowering quince tree. Getting so I can't mow under the tree easily. Again, if I do it now the city will take away the branches for me.
I am waiting for the delivery of a small refrigerator for the basement workshop. I am hoping to start holding operations this winter and want to have a place for refreshments down there. Actually spent a few minutes yesterday in the train room and did a couple of small repairs. I will be glad when I have finished my responsibilities to the NMRA Division and a couple other groups that I have been doing way too much for the last few years and can hopefully find some time to built my layout......
Oh..... I'm all set for this years sn@w when it arrives.....
OK, got to go check the basement and start the siphon to keep the water level down........

Interesting car, Ray - must be a banged-up Polski Fiat 126, the successor of the famous (original) Fiat 500, which was Mussolini´s answer to Hitler´s Volkswagen - which is, of course historically not quite correct, as the Fiat Cinquecento was first introduced in 1957.
Petra and I spent the better part of thee day counting our nickels and pennies in the "Getaway" kitty. If we sell all our household stuff and the car, we may have enough funds to get us to the US and pay for a few months. We will look at it once I am retired.
At first Petra did not buy into the idea of packing up and go, as she is too attached to our son. But after having received a number of threats from the Antifa for my key role in founding the much hated opposition party, she has opened up to the thought. As things around us start to crumble, it´s high time to push forward on the issue.
Guess I have again to start selling my trains...

I have no idea what it was originally... Just a photo someone sent me or I found online. Actually I use a snowblower powered by Batteries. It's an EGO that is remarkably powerful and can throw snow up to 35 feet. Only drawback is that it is not self propelled so I have to push it. On the other hand the rotating blades do pull the machine into the snow a bit.

Fo quite a long time, the Fiat Cinquecento and its successor Fiat 126 (made in Italy and in Poland) was about the smallest car there is. with a 2-cyl. 18bhp engine, overtaking a truck on a freeway would have proven to be suicidal. The car is so small, I would not fit into it - with the front seats taken out.
I don´t run on batteries nor am I gas powered - I run on good food, but I cannot throw a shovel of snow 35 ft. away. At least I am fully organic

Good morning from the damp West Coast.
Feeling a little wonky today and will take it easy. Last night my Wife and Daughter started asking me what was wrong as they noticed I was not operating on all cylinders. By the time we got to the restaurant for sushi I was doing some weird things like pouring soy sauce in my teacup and unable to use chopsticks which I am normally very proficient at. My wife quickly decided I was having electrolyte issues due to my off schedule bike ride that happened from a lousy nights sleep. My workouts are pretty tough and I always eat and drink in a regimented way before I commence. Yesterday I went off my pre-ride schedule. I have topped up with the necessary vitamins and minerals fruits and vegetables but need to rest for a couple of days.
I read my "late in the day" post from yesterday and while I only graduated high school the post looks like I may have managed grade 5 at best. That was when I first noticed something was amiss.
Ed, that was a great article on the Canadian, I think I will print it off. They talk about turning the train in the Drake street wye in Vancouver. They actually had a balloon track around the roundhouse which is why I have a balloon track around my RH on the layout.
So it is only an old rerun from me today as I am still misfiring somewhat. If I don't feel better tonight I'll pop by the hospital and get an IV to top me up on the electrolytes. No bike ride! I can feel the goo forming around my midsection already! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Can't seem to embed the link so you will have to click on it. https://www.nfb.ca/film/railroaders/

That sure looks like a model railroad curve, brent! I remember going around the baloon track in a similar way, around the back wall of the roundhouse, at Spadina Street in Toronto. The flanges were really squealing!

I'm sure glad I got my train-riding-watching in back in the 1970s & '80s. I don't think I'd like it very much today, although I've been on a few Amtrak trips it just isn't the same.
I embedded one of the CFB films here once and it caused a ruckus because every time you entered the diner it immediately took you to that link and it got to be a nuisance!

Another day of first for my wife. She went shopping, Ok I took her shopping and she went in four stores and never used her cane! Plus she drove her car for the first time in 8 weeks and did not hit anything! Took her to our closed Shop And Save (I miss that store) and she drove around the parking lot a few times and seem to do fine.
Train Front Seems the B&O freight car I thought I cleared from the RIP Track should have stayed there! I have 9 freight cars laying on there sides on my verson of Horse Shoe Curve. Will get out the Big Hook Sunday and see what I missed.

Hi Ed,
Interesting article on the Canadian!
I rode that train almost all the way from Toronto to Vancouver and back in 1965. I say 'almost' because instead of taking the train back from Vancouver to Calgary, I was a passenger in my uncle's MGB, top down of course!
Evening diners,
I've decided to make the jump and buy an Athearn SDP45 Conrail, DCC Sound for about 150 from M.B. Klein, I haven't made the purchase yet, I'm going to wait till next payday (I'm going to put 75 aside this week and the rest will be next week) I'm also going to grab a Phase II North American Safety Cab to swap into the unit, I guess I'll either get it custom painted into NWP colors or keep it CR, it depends on how much is in my budget.
Well Monday I'm going job hunting again!

NeO6874 you haven't had the good stuff out of Ohio or Vermont then. :)
Will have to take a look to see what'll survive shipment across the pond for ya, then. Best time to get it is during the sugaring season (March / April).
Ed, I'm right next door over in Cuyahoga. Love heading over to Burton when that maple house in town square is doing its thing.
Ray, you've got a point about NY maple syrup. I've been to Chatauqua Lake a couple of times and have picked up some jugs (friend of SWMBO lives over in Lucille Ball's hometown, whose name escapes me). Beautiful area over there, and a breeze to drive up I90.
Ulrich, You and Petra can move to Youngstown, split the difference between Ed, Ray, and me (hey, I've heard stories about pies, you're crazy people if you think I'm gonna let that pass)
Good morning... er just shy of afternoon all! Hope all is well with everyone. Prayers to those in need.
Yes, I have been absent from the Diner lately; actually severely absent to the point I may have skipped out the past year or so LOL. Sorry for my tardiness; I apologize to all.
Anyways, what's new with everyone. I hppened to notice on my way in that the scenery is a tad bit different and the temps are a bit chilly. But I guess that's what happens when the Diner is moved to BC, Canada!
I have a question for all though. I am getting to the point where I may be able to actually build a layout. I want to make it DCC-friendly, eventhough I currently don't have any DCC-equiped engines. So, my question is this - What's the easiest to use DCC system?
I'm sorry this is a short post, but I have to head out to do a landscaping job. Yes, I know this is a Sunday, but with the weather we have had here in the Syracuse, NY area as of late, in addition to the forecasted weather for this coming week, today is the only nice day I have to get the job done. I will stop in later on this evening for some dessert.
Take care all!

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
John, DCC is all pretty much "the same" in terms of ease -- especially in the starter kits (excepting bachmann's from about a decade ago, which was super limited).
Essentially you're gonna get a system that has a capacity of 1-2 amps (1 or 2 old BB locos, unless you swap out to newer motors), that either uses a potentiometer (similar to DC powerpacks) or an encoder wheel (similar to a mouse wheel).
I have an NCE Powercab - it fit nice in the hand, and was a little more expandable than Digitrax's starter offering (which, at the time, was kind of dead-end -- if you went to the bigger Digitrax system, the starter kit kinda got sidelined). Also, the club I was part of was looking to NCE as well (but it kinda fizzled out before we got anywhere).
Just taking a break from the fall pond pump-out/cleaning.
Johnboy, Happy Birthday!!! Sorry I missed it on the day, yesterday but I was busy with my own celebration.
Yesterday my wife took me out for a nice lunch. We went to a little cafe we have be going to for at least 25 years. It is small place with the same owner. It is called Cafe Carlo. She had the PEI Mussels in a Pernod/cream sauce. They are really great but I was lured away by the beef dip special.
Dave, we don't have cardinals here but all the others you mention are here at least for part of the year. Our bill for feeding the birds last month was $350. Sure glad the migrants have gone.
It's a beautiful warm sunny 17c Sunday. Ran trains for hours this morning and need to hop on the Deere to cut the lawn.

Eveing, or is it afternoon Diners. I hate time changes! Body says it is 6:30 but clock says 5:30.
Train Front Went to K-10 Model Trains today and it was open house Sunday and parking lot was packed! Seems the nut I need to get off my M1a to drop the drive gear does not fit any of the BLI nut Drivers I have. Person I was hoping to have help me was helping with the layout because of all the kids. Did get to use there work station with a lite magafing lamp. I swear they are not nuts, I saw no shoulders for a nut driver to grap on to? Ask another person to take a peak, to him it did not look like it had any shoulders either?
Just so happened there was a used Pargon M1b there for sale. We looked at it and it looked the same as my M1a and it's orginal nut driver in the box. Could get 3 of the 4 nuts lose but not the one I need to get off! I have came up with a new game plan that should work and I will post about it later.
Little about K-10 pricing. Has a whole I think Ken owner of K-10 model trains prices are very fair. No, he cannot match on line prices but only charges a 20% mark up. Even seems fair on his estates sale prices. I bought 8 Bachmann PRR Coach for only $115.00 and that sure seemed fair to me!
But Pargon I run #9 M1b was tagged at $249.99 and the head light does not work? Come on, yes I know PRR did not use the headlights during the day in this era but would spend that knid of money on a engine with no headlight? Plus it was well used, brass was showing on some of the drivers! This was not a shelf queen!
Ed Pm was sent.
Good Evening, Folks —
NeO6874Ed, I'm right next door over in Cuyahoga. Love heading over to Burton when that maple house in town square is doing its thing.
Hi, Neighbor.
I grew up near St. Clair and Eddy Road in East Cleveland then moved to South Euclid near the City Hall on Green Road. Went to Brush
In the late 1970s moved to the Chardon area and been here ever since. I used to play with the 4070 and that bunch on the Cuyahoga Valley.
Ken, got your PM and I'll get back to you. The B&O SD7 is one of the first run Proto 2000s. Veen sitting on the shelf for years. No decoder but should run fine. It even still has its old X2f couplers!
PRR_M1BLI7 by Edmund, on Flickr
Are you trying to get the main crank pin out, Ken??? (hiding under the eccentric rod in this photo) I'll try to measure it so you can fit the right sized nut driver on it. The eccentric crank is probably keyed (little tab on it) and I'm sure there are spacers in there, too. The cheap nut drivers that BLI supply are probably not precise enough for a good fit. You may need a good set, say from Wiha.
Sunny and cool today, rain on the way...
Messing around with little projects on the model RR. Put a decoder in an old Life-Like Nickel Plate Road SW-900. I picked up a Trix, New York Central Mikado. Tom Stage and a few other fellows that have had them say they're great and now I can agree. It is a beautiful running loco with excellent details. Got a nice deal on it from a fellow in Gütersloh, Germany. Postage to US was only $15. ! I put a Loksound decoder in it already. It will go on its maiden run later tonight
Well, time to fire up the smoker. We have a couple turkeys, a duck and some beef brisket to smoke.
I hope everyone is doing well!
Cheers! Ed
Evening all,
Welcome to daylight wasting time. Having some red beans and rice.
John, I second the NCE power cab as a good starter for DCC. I don't have a true layout yet but have the power cab and I converted some of my Athearn blue box locos for DCC. Easy to program and easy to use.
CNCharlieOur bill for feeding the birds last month was $350.
$350!!! How many feeders are you putting out and what are you feeding?
We buy one 50lb. bag each of nyjer seed and black sunflower seed every two months or so. That works out to about $135.00 Cdn. We also put out suet in the winter.
I found that our seed consumption actually went up significantly when we finally found some decent feeders. For years almost every feeder we tried would clog up so the birds often couldn't get to the seed.
JP .... Good seeing you again ..... DCC? ... I have been using MRC Prodigy Wireless for a few years, and I am happy with it.
JohnBoy .... CN Charlie says you had a birthday yesterday.... Happy late birthday !
NeO6874John, DCC is all pretty much "the same" in terms of ease
Hi John.
I will politely disagree with Dan's statement, specifically with regard to NCE and Digitrax systems. Personally, I don't think there is any comparison between NCE and Digitrax, especially when it comes to learning how to run the systems. I use an NCE Powercab at home and various Digitrax throttles at the club. The NCE is easy to understand and easy to operate right out of the box. The Digitrax system is neither easy to understand nor easy to operate when you first start using it. I won't go into the details because that has been done countless times before, but perhaps the best indicator of ease of use is the fact that during these discussions the number of complaints and problems related to Digitrax significantly outweighs the tiny number of complaints about NCE.
Here is one of the more recent comparison discussions:
http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/744/t/265497.aspx?page=1
Try to find an opportunity to use the various systems before you spend your money.
I guess it comes from backgrounds - I found them to be equally easy to pick up ... But NCE was a better price, and not a dead end.
NeO6874 I found them to be equally easy to pick up
I'm afraid I don't have either your manual dexterity or your memory. I'm all thumbs. The NCE was way easier for me to use. Everybody is different.
Hi everyone,
JPowell. Good to see you posting again.
This month's destination is very nice. We were in Banff, Canmore, Calgary, and Invermere just a year ago. It snowed on us the day after we arrived. Beautiful! The Canadian Rockies in that area are just gorgeous. It's a little too cold for my liking, but we had a great time. BC is called the warm side of the Rockies,....uhh, yeah, sure. One thing's sure, CP was very smart to run the track through that area. It's some of most spectacular mountain scenery in the world.
Last night we took advantage of post holloween candy sales. I got enough candy corn to last into spring. Funny, its very hard to find the rest of the year.
Nothing MRR wise to report.
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

That would make using the Digitrax Zeph... ohhhh wait, I was only limiting my comment to
(1) Digitrax Zephyr* starter box thingy
(2) NCE Powercab starter kit (the one I got).
Both of which were at the LHS as "floor models" so you could get your hands dirty before plopping down $200 on something you might not like.
That being said, I recall that the test loco decoders were "only" 2 or 4-function (motor + lights) jobs, and they didn't exactly have a lot that could be configured; so perhaps that had a bit to do with the "meh, they're the same".
It was Tom / tstage of the forums here who convinced me to go with the NCE setup at one of the Berea NMRA trainshows.
*This unit has since been superceded apparently.

Jobs should not be hard to find. McDonalds is paying $12.50/hr to start, leastwise out here.
A fairly nice day here with a high of 4C but today is the last of the nice weather as we won't be above zero C by the end of the week.
I finally finished pumping and cleaning all the debris and sludge out of the pond. It isn't that big but leaves and dirt settles in it over the summer so I have to flush it out many times to get it clean for next year.
Dave, we went through about 125 lbs of shelled sunflower seeds in October which accounts for most of the cost. We don't use much black oil seed as the shells are toxic to plants but the shelled stuff runs about $60 for a 25 lb. bag. We also put out suet all year mainly for the woodpeckers and nuthatches but other birds also use it. We put the suet in small holes bored into a 4" diameter log section that is hung on a shepherds hook. The woodpeckers can easily cling to the log bark and feed on the suet. Now that the migrants have gone, I expect the seed consumption to drop off, assuming we don't get the Redpoles.
We are just about ready to take Robbie for a walk and then it is planting time in the back yard. We have a few small things to get in the ground and today is the last day weather will permit. We also have to plant some tulip bulbs but that doesn't take long as I have a special drill bit just for that purpose.
Good Evening Gang!
Gee, I missed my big Sunday breakfast yesterday!
Actually, Petra and i are quite involved in some relocation ideas, discussing how to facilitate such a move and - that´s the most important issue - how to deal with the fact of leaving family behind.
This is just like a ride on a roller coaster, with ups and downs every second. I am much more relaxed than Petra, who has difficulties leaving our son and her kin folks back in the Old Country. Lots of more talking is required, but also lots of more research. Last but certainly not least we have find answers to the pressing question how to supplement the rather dire pension I will get starting August next year. How does "The Apple Tree" sound to you? German Apfelkuchen in various shapes and tastes - trust me, you won´t taste anything like somewhere else!
These are just rough thoughts - bare bones that need a lot ofd flesh put onto them before we push forward.

Hi Terry,
Glad to hear that things went well. If your results are anything like my dad's, he went from months of pain to almost no pain in just a few days.
Good luck,
I applied at a new upscale restaurant in Zachary today and got applications from 6 hotels in downtown Baton Rouge, tomorrow is fill out the applications, return them, then go to some restaurants downtown and up towards midtown (Government Street and Jefferson) and fill them out and return them.
So far I applied to Bistro Byronz at Americana in Zachary.
And I have applications for the Hilton, Courtyard by Mariott, Hampton by Hilton, Hotel Indigo (IHG), and Holiday Inn Express (also IHG) all of which are downtown.
I currently work at a Holiday Inn Express and Best Western, Holiday Inn is a International Hotels Group (IHG) brand so the Indigo or HIE downtown would be similar in policy as my current job.

If I recall correctly, you already replaced gear #75, yes?
BLI_M1a by Edmund, on Flickr
Looks like you can get to #76 from the bottom. The pin is right behind the tire as you say. Did you have to drive the pin out when you changed the other gear? Hopefully it just presses out with only a little persuasion. I agree that by removing the side rod screws on #3 driver then taking off the bottom cover should drop the geared driver out. That way you don't have to mess with the eccentric crank.
The crank pin screws are 3mm but very rounded over, as you noticed. You might want to sand the face of the nut driver so it can get a good grip on the flats of the head. Mine weren't in very tight.

Brent .... Thanks for posting interesting information about BC Rail.
Have a great day, everybody.
Morning folks,
I made an error yesterday, the I in IHG stands for Intercontinental not International.
Well off to the hunt.
Morning All:
Whew tired of the rain.
Garry , our Christmas stuff is going to start going up this week. We kind of dribble it out over time.
we have a tree in every room. I like Christmas stuff and lights.
I am going to make a "Layout" on my desk at work this year complete with snow and trees. we will see how it goes. I have to clean the desk first, haha.
I will post pictures when i get it done.
moelarrycurly4Whew tired of the rain.
moelarrycurly4We kind of dribble it out
Maybe you should stop dribbling.
cudaken Eveing Diners Flo, give the gang and I a please. Time Change is kicking my caboose tonight! While getting Sue too theapory was easy (9:00 AM) getting off at 8:00 PM was hard. Later, Ken
The humans are fine with the time change, but the cat and dog have not adjusted, so they still expect food an hour earlier. Not so bad at night, but much too early in the morning,
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Flo, give the gang and I a and give Ed a Crown Royal.
Work was lacking luster is a understatment! Just to give you a idea I read 150 pages of a Clive Clustler novel and yacked on the phone with Larry Morris for about a hour and a half on and off.
Terry Glad things went well! We where told my wife total knee replacment was a outpatient surgery? Well she spent 2 nights in the hosptial but we where hoping for three.
Ed you dodge a bullet tonight. I called you and got the answering machine, you must have caller ID!
Soon as I clear a few more rolling stock I will dig back in to the PRR M1a
Mr B Sparkie stomach never changed time. He gets some can food when he wakes up after going outside and 3:00 PM. But before the time change he wanted it at 2:00 PM. Now it is back to 3:00 PM or Central Stomach Time.
Hello... hello hello {echo}
No reply, coffee pot is cold?
cudaken Ed you dodge a bullet tonight. I called you and got the answering machine, you must have caller ID!
I thought I heard the phone ringing! My sleep schedule is crazy and Monday night through Tuesday I didn't sleep at all. When you called I had already turned in. Usually I'm up all night.
Haven't even listened to the message yet! Light is still blinking. (Mrs. Pullman still sleeping) We can catch up tonight.
Well, I lit the fire under the old coffee so I think I'll see if it is fluid enough to pour yet.
No Flo, no brunhilda, no Chloe? Even Vinny hasn't shown up yet.
Cool and sunny here in NE Ohio. Everyone must be checking election results.
I'll try to stop in later...

Good morning, everybody !
I'll have Tim Horton's coffee (even if cold) and a Tim Horton's orginal donut , please .
Ed .... I like the photo of the Canadian.
Cheers !
Mornin' everyone!
Yesterday was a bit crazy. Most people I've ever seen at the polls in .. ever.
Hopefully it'll stay sunny for the day, so that the back yard can dry up enough that I can get the leafblower out (it's one of those yard-goat style things, and don't feel like dealing with it sinking into the lawn). Bit crazy to "only" have the leaves falling in November. Usually they're bare by Halloween (or at least pretty well along).
On the modeling front - if UPS is to be believed, my little (corrected) blinkenled PCBs are going to arrive today, so that should provide a few hours of old-fashioned leaded fun (because seriously, lead-free solder is awful). Hopefully it works as planned :).
Dunno what kind of electronics trouble I'm going to get into next - maybe play around with a "cmri-lite" type board, based around some of these 'Tiny' series microcontrollers.
Yeah, I know about the offerings from MRCS-- but their cpNode "motherboard" is already $35 for a bare board (including the required "nonstandard formfactor arduino" that plugs into it).
Dan, who is making your boards? I have several micro controller projects I am goint to make and install at our museum layout.
Lead free solder is awful. I solder a lot in my repair sideline ( antique radios)
I used jclpcb -- heard about them from some youtube people, and ... well, can't really beat $15 for 10 boards shipped (note, it's 10 copies of the same board).
This is actually the second set - the first ones I designed wrong, and they didn't work (oh well, I've burned more money on kits that I've absolutely ruined, so)
Good evening.
Hello Dan and MLC. Where is everybody else?
Don't know where they all are.
moelarrycurly4Don't know where they all are.
Haven't seen 'em.
Anybody check the couch cushions?

Here I am, dozing off in the back booth, trying ti make it through yet another sleepless night.
Heartland Division CB&Q Good evening. Hello Dan and MLC. Where is everybody else?
getting their USDA-recommended daily allotment of lead?
Kiddo decided today wasn't a nap day, so didn't get a chance to get to the circuit board earlier this afternoon, but my wife got home early from work today, and decided to take the kiddo shopping with her (kiddo's) grandma, so that let me squeeze in about an hour's worth of leaf-blowing before it got too dark to do anything.
Have to run out to the homeless despot and get a 1 gallon (for you metric types, that's uh ... 1 gallon* ) -- but wifey's on the way home so don't want to miss goodnight to the kiddo.
After it got too dark, I did get a chance to solder up one of the PCBs. A few things are slower than I'd like -- mainly between power-on and "it starts". I think the caps may be charging - there are some relatively large ones on the output side of the voltage regulator.
Also learned which pin was connected to the heatsink of the vreg (ow).
Battery's dead on the camera (and the cellphone is misbehaving), maybe I'll remember when I get home from the store and take a pic of the completed one.
Flo give the gang and I a and I will take a side order of aspirin.
Work Sucked Rail Spikes. Won't go into details but I glad I am off the next 4 days!
Train Front. Was getting ready to bragg I clearded 3 rolling stock from the RIP track, I was this close boss. When will I get Smart. (old folks will get it) Looks like the B&O 50' Box Car I fixed picked a turnout again. Funy thing I replaced both trucks and ran it last night for about 2 hours and tacked great! Worst part it was on the tail end of a 30' train and the cars on there side is at the hardest part of the layout to reach!
Ed On my Walthers Bessmer SD 7 where you by chances thinking Scenic Acccent Gule to hold the truck on? Far as the Budd? I think it would look great dragging coal. Thanks to YGW I have B&O coal cars out the caboose.
My head hurts so later, Ken
G'd Evening Gang,
Brunhilda, I haven't seen you for a while. When you get a moment would you please bring me a peanut butter/raisen bagel and a mug of HC. I'll run that through my blender then down the tube.
Welcome to winter. It has sure settled in here, -18c and snowing. Supposed to get colder tomorrow and the day after that as well. Got the little motorhome parked for the winter and got the three batteries out of it and into the garage today..
A big thankyou to Ulrich & Petra, Charlie, Garry and others for the very nice Birthday wish. I will never see 77 again.
Terry in Wisc. Glad to hear your operation went smoothly and that you were released so quick. But really do take care, we don't want to hear that the release was too quick and you have had a set back.
Brent, thanks for posting that video. I remember it now, but I had forgotten about it. It is good, I only wish they could have had the scenes more in tune with the music. such as when Hank is singing about Quebec they are showing Niagara Falls and when in Ontario they are showing shots of Castle Mountain (Mt. Eisenhower) sure doesn't fit very well.
Not much new here, haven't had much energy for a couple of months. I am set to decal a Gp-30 with the last Mountain Lettering and crest tomorrow, and a few things on the RIP track.
Steven ( the young one not Br.Otte) good luck to you job hunting, you deserve a shot at a good job.
Found a funny thing with my B-man Gp-30s (3) on my test track, I have an old MRC power pack with Pulse power on it. The Gp-30s are DCC ready, but I only run DC. When the PP. is on pulse the locos will only run in reverse no matter what the direction the PP. says it will be. I don't have pulse on the layout so I never noticed that before. The layout has three Control Master 20s. powerring it.
CN. Charlie, a belated Happy Birthday to you, and anyone else that I might have missed along the way. Please forgive. Charlie I hope you got your planting done today as I don't think you'll be wanting to do it tomorrow. Sorry about the Cold.
Garry or anyone else, can you tell me when did Cape Jim pass on. saw that on the RIP Track and had been wondering as we usually emailed back and forth.??
Also any word around from Phil (Flip) another great Guy I haven't heard from in a while.

I hope everyone has a fine day.
What´s for lunch?
We just had lunch - a wonderfully unhealthy meal of fries, "Leberkäse" ( akind of spam) and fried eggs, along with a sidedish of German coleslaw.
Frugal, but tasty ...
Tomorrow´s lunch will be a lot less greasy!
Only problem there Ulrich is that you forgot the smile made of bacon ;)
Though, I'm more a fan of German potato salad.
Got those pictures of the LED control board now. I think it turned out pretty well, what for it being the first time that I soldered a SMT component.
Dan,
Nice looking board, what do you use as layout software?
I used the online tool "EasyEDA" to layout the schematic and PCB. It's decent, and interfaces with their sister companies lcsc (components) and jclpcb (pcb fab).
The only "downside" to the jclpcb service is that you have to order the PCBs in a minimum lot of ten (10). If you're okay with the "standard" boards (1 oz copper, 0.062" thick, green, up to 4x4" square), they're $1.50 a board, shipped -- well, at least for now; I think the $2/10 baseprice is a sale.
Between my planned layout, and the present for wifey; I only need two of them. The rest would collect dust here, so if anyone wants a board, shoot me a PM.
Good Morning,
A frosty day here in aptly named, Winterpeg.
Johnboy, I did a search of Jim's name as I was concerned that I hadn't heard from him in a long time. His obit came up that said he passed away in April, 2018. No cause was mentioned but he did pass away in a hospital.
Maxman, we don't lose that much seed to squirrels as we use a feeder called the Squirrel Buster. It really does stop them from getting seed. They only get what we put on the ground and we do put out some for them too. My wife has a couple that will actually come to her if she calls their names.
Dan:
The boards look very professional. Nice soldering!
I'm going to go back to your thread in the Electronics/DCC forum and read it again. I have some IR detectors that I mounted on standard perfboards but they look like crap. They would look much better on a dedicated circuit board, and probably work better too.
I am going to make some signal controller boards, crossing signal flasher and servo controller boards for our layout at the museum when I get the "round tuit".
Thanks Dave!
Yeah, the SMT microcontroller was a bit worrisome when I got it, but it went together quite easily.
Afternoon Diners
Nothing much to report today, cold weather has hit. Today high was 40 F degrees which is not a awful cold but sort of cold.
Got the big hook out and cleared the derailment. Looks like the B&O box car caused the mess again. Will look at the trucks again. Maybe the ones I replaced them with had more ware than I thought? Well it is a B&O car so I won't give up on it!
Stolen Valor Being X Military I do watch stolen valor videos. But 27 year old man saying he was sergant in the Boy Scouts? I love it when the 27 year old man said he did not have his BSA socks on because his Mom had not washed them!
Ray, any thoughts on this one
Later Ken
I went to bed early last night and woke up, wide awake at midnight. Watched a bunch of youtube videos including Rapido's latest, James Wright review and my favorite The History Guy. I have an interest in WW2, because my father was in the navy at Guadalcanal and in the invasion of Southern France.
The History Guy doesn't limit himself to WW2 and I watched videos on the Meuse, Hannibal's elephants (which may have been fake Roman history) a couple of 82nd Airborne medics that landed on D-Day, took care of Germans and Americans in a church, while it changed hands between the US, Germany and US, Coast Guard life saving during D-Day, the USS Barb, a submarine, that landed sailors on Japan to destroy a train, a slave captain of a Confederate boat, that stole the boat, and turned it over to the Union, the first black pilot in WW1 and a couple of US marshalls that sort of lived their lives like the Lone Ranger.
Best of all was the Pacific Clipper, one of those big amphibious airplanes that flew before WW2 in the style of the best rail travel, i.e. well cooked meals and sleeping accommodations. It got trapped in Australia after Dec 7th. They ended up flying across Africa, to South America and eventually to La Guardia, where they had to fly in circles for an hour before they were allowed to land.
By then it was 5 am and I went back to bed until 9 am. Maybe I need a history intervention.
I did some scenicking around my yard and turntable.
well, I'm going to try again,
still got work to do on this. Sorry Guys..

I was a MSgt in a video game once ... and then mom hit the reset button
I have no idea what today's topic is but whatever.
My story of the day,
Had to pick up some furniture my Grandmother bought off LetGo, as me and my brother are loading the table into my truckbed the guys daughter comes outside, well I'm going about tying down the furniture when the guy asks "Hey are those shoes comfortable?" I look perplexed, he adjusts the question "your Yeezys, are they comfortable?" I now knowing the context of the conversation say "yes, yes they are." The guy then continues "yeah my daughter saw them and was saying 'dad he's got Yeezys on!' She looked them up and they're like 300 bucks right?" I replied yes, but I got them for FREE, see they were in lost and found for three months and nobody claimed them so I got them." The daughter now chimes in "wow that's so cool, they're your size too!" I said " yes, I saw they were my size and I was like yeah I've got 300 dollar sneakers for free."
And so that's how a pair of (Free) Yeezy Beluga 2.0s ALMOST got me a girls number.
I didn't ask because well that's weird cause I'm there to pickup furniture and I'm trying to pickup his daughter.
Then again they're Texas Longhorns fans so I'll probably see them around town when I'm in my Burnt Orange.
Hook'em Horns!
Back to the other news, tomorrow I have to return some applications and I'm going to get some more, hopefully I'll get a few calls.
Good morning folks. We are 2" away from the highest recorded rainfall ever, and it's raining now. It's been such a warm fall, I find this mornings webcam view of Deshler Ohio surprising.
Henry ..... It looks cold and wet in the photo ... Record rainfall ? Over what period of time ?
Briefly for now... Catch you later.
Bleh, snow/rain mix this morning. Flo, I think I'm gonna need the big mug of hot chocolate to get the chill off... maybe some bacon and eggs.
Least I was able to get the leaves up into piles yesterday. Now it's just carting them to the lawn for pickup. It's going to be a complete mess this year, the trees are still pretty heavy with leaves.
On the train front, starting to brainstorm my next project -- a JMRI- / CMRI- compatible interface for it (so one can tell it "hey, it's nighttime, turn on the lights"). Maybe even a replacement of the cpNode / SUSIC / SMINI.
Goood Morrrnninng alllll.
we might have the wet white stuff Monday into Tuesday here in W KY
Strating the desk top Christmas "layout" just have some track down, tetsing the fit. I need some more straight track.
Garry for the year we have had 60", normal is 40"
Afternoon folks!
Chloe, I'll have a mug of decaf with cream and some stevia, please and thank you...
Currently 34°F with little white thingies falling out of the sky at the moment. Won't amount to anything as the ground is still well above the freezing point.
I'll still put in this though:
The handyman came and unhooked my hose that seemed to be welded hard onto the outside faucet today while I was over getting 4 more miles of walking in at the fieldhouse this morning. He also got the spray attachment off for me as well. He told me on the phone that he is seeing a lot of this type of thing as the manufacturers are using some recycled metals for the connections that isn't very pure.... Says the trick is to use 3 or so rubber washers in the conections so the hose isn't as far onto the faucet.
Tonight I will be at the Smith Opera House in downtown Geneva for the Geneva Concert Series with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra with Ahri, Kim solo cellist for the Schuman Cello Concerto in A minor as well as several other major works. I am looking forward to it and hope my hearing aids work as good as they have been for me to actually enjoy music recently.
I will be spending part of the afternoon packing stuff for the Batavia Train Show this Sunday. May have to do some shopping for items Saturday, but most everything we need should be in stock already. Hopefully I will be passing some of the stuff off to the guy who likely will become my successor for the Division and so may have less in the car for the ride home....
Hope you all have a great day!
Flo, the gang and I will have a and I will take a side of candles.
Seems some one or some people cannot drive. Electrict company called and said they would be turning off the power at 5:00 PM till 6:00 PM for repairs due to a car accident. Guess Honest Abe had good night vision! I had 8 candles going and did not see that great. Power was off for 45 minutes so not that bad I guess.
Saw a few snow flakes fall. Nothing stuck and there was very little of them anyway.
Train Front Started working on the Walhers Proto 2000 Bessemer SD 7 last night. One of the problems I had is a number board feel out. Got that back in places and will start to mess with the broken side frame.
Howdy
Ray ... Regarding winter weather in North vs. South . Actually, a severe ice storm in the South is no joke . I would prefer a winter storm with a foot of snow instead of one with an inch of ice. We experienced the KY Ice Storm of 2009. Similar to the rest of the western half of KY, we were stranded for nine days with no electricity , no land line phone , and no county water. Our road was complety blocked with broken trees.
By the way, I recognize the interchange in Alabama in the photo.
Also Ray.. thanks for posting your photo in my parks thread. I like your park scene a lot.
Everybody ...
Garry, we get our fair share of ice as well up here. We just have the roads salted (or brined for the interstates) before the storm shows up, and the truck crews out in the worst of it, clearing things before it can get too terrible.
The problem with winter weather in the Deep South is 1 we get ice but no snow, and we ain't got no salt, no plows, no nothin. All we have is gravel and sand, not to mention that people down here aren't as acquainted with winter driving.
I'll have my tow straps ready to lend a helping hand to anyone that got their car ditched.
Evenin' folks!

Well, Garry, I hear ya! But, a major ice storm up here in the Northeast ain't no joke either, my friend. We tend to be a little better prepared and knowledgable with how to handle those things.... One Christmas Vaction, My son's and I drove down to Florida to visit my Sister (the Rev.) We got caught in a snowstorm that dumped a foot of sn*w in Georgia. That was not fun down there, I tell ya! Up here it would have been a nuisance but we have the equipment and the know how to handle that. We ended up spending a night in a school opened up as an emergency shelter (actually we slept in the truck. More comfortable than the bleachers in the gym, and we could roll down the windows, run the engine a few minutes and have heat now and then as well. It was all of 40°F inside the school and most of the people didn't have heavy coats to wear either.) Not fun and I appologize for poking fun at it, but sometimes ya just gotta, you know.... Oh, and yes I use the BBQ grill year around. Had a piece of chicken done on it tonight while the final flakes of sn*w were falling through the pouring rain (40°F)....
We had an inch of ice here several years back with major power outages, damage to trees (Major), with some falling on houses, etc. I was one of the lucky ones who had a wood stove that I used for most of the heat in the house. We had running water as that is buried deep around here and the have emergency generators at the reservoir.
Went to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Cnocert at the Smith Opera House downtown tonight. All I can say is WOW! My hearing still is improving and the concert sounded so much better than they did 20 years ago to me.
Have a good one out there!
Good evening all.
Zoe - A hot cocoa please. Thanks.
Weather - Yep - Snow is here! "Winter Weather Advisory" in effect for Erie County Pa, and Chataqua County NY. Wet snow with 3-6" expected by tomorrow evening. (Some places up to 9" possible.)
Too bad I'm too busy to get some snowy rail shots....
Ulrich - Glad to see you here in the diner again. Sorry you are having so many issues though.
Ray - Yep, BBQ tastes good all year long, snow or not. And, smoked ribs are very good in any weather...
Ken - Glad to hear the wife is recovering well.
Garry - I will take all the snow it wants to throw, sans ice, thanks.
W*^k - Still getting 40-45 hrs each week, but getting very irritated at my version of "Jerry" of late. I do something, to make our day easier, and he un-does it in 5 minutes of starting the day... Because he "doesn't like it" the way it was set up.
Remodel front - A wall will be coming down, then the floor gets refreshed (floating hardwood flooring?) before the layout can be rebuilt. The walls will be a nice "sky blue" color ("Billow") so that will help the layout out very quickly.
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night.

Well, they've had twenty years more practice
We got our usual wet, heavy "Lake Effect" snow today and more due over the weekend. I'll be in the basement "playing". I helped my son put a larger wood stove into his fireplace tonight. Not the best arrangement but I think it will work. He has a stainless steel liner threaded into his existing chimney and fireplace.
The fireplace must have been built by amatuers. No combustion chamber or smoke shelf and the firebrick lining stops just above the lintel and the rest of the "combustion chamber" if you want to call it that, is a sloppy mess using cored face brick. No way to build a fireplace.
At least with a brick-lined steel insert and the SS liner it will be a safer setup.
I have some ancient Life-Like F-M "C-Liners" that I decided to put sound decoders into. That might be this weekends project. They run smooth and pull like tanks. I think they're one of the "unsung heros" from back in the early Proto 1000 days.
I had Digitrax DH-121 decoders in them. I'm going to try to mount all the handrails, too.
I finished up an old NKP Products PRR Business Car this week. The brass has to ride in class...

I did a quote for a fireplace insert a few years ago and what the customer showed me was pretty scary. They knew something was bad when the chimney fell over one day. It had been added to the house by a previous owner and whoever did it didn't pour a base for it and didn't tie it into the house wall. It was only dug into the ground about six inches and the only thing that was holding it up was the eavetrough where it went past the chimney. All it took was a wind storm to topple it. I was shaking my head. The customer laughed and told me that that was nothing.
He took me downstairs to look at the fireplace. From a distance it looked normal but then he told me to have a look up the flue. There was no flue! There was no smoke box or liner either! Just brick up to the ceiling. The floor above had been cut away so that the smoke could get up to the level of the bottom of the chimney and it was left just like that! The perimeter floor joists were exposed and charred somewhat but the fire had never spread!! The owner said he had tried the fireplace once and all it did was fill the rec room with smoke so he never lit it again, thank goodness.
I don't know if he had a home inspection done when he bought the place. Looks can be deceiving!
hon30critterI did a quote for a fireplace insert a few years ago and what the customer showed me was pretty scary.
It is a wonder more houses haven't burned down, blown up or people asphyxiated.
I used to do side-jobs, kind of a handyman thing. Somebody called me once to look at their gas water heater, they couldn't get the pilot to stay lit. Thermocouple, I thought.
I got to the place and looked things over. Looks OK at first and I do try to light the pilot but it goes out as soon as you let up the safety button.
As I'm looking things over I see soot at the top where the draft vent hood is and there's soot all around it? I tapped on the vent pipe and it sounded like a solid oak log!
More snooping reveals that the homeowner installed a wood stove next floor up and chiseled into the furnace chimney. All the wood ash had fallen into the chimney and plugged up the water heater The gas furnace would have been next but it was cut in about two feet above where the water heater went in. Back then it was OK to share the two.
I politely told the lady of the house that this situation requires more work than I'm capable of. "But we don't have any hot water!" she says. Sorry, no can do but you had better get somebody here right away because you have a dangerous situation. This was the 1970s and I don't think there were any household CO detectors then.
I hope they got it straightened out but I wasn't about to assume any responsibility for that mess. People gripe about paying for permits, inspections and professionals but when you see stuff like this? and they had two young children in the house
Another time I saw a gas dryer piped up with about two-dozen 1/4" x 6" nipples and couplings, then a water stop & waste valve coming off the main, no valve at the appliance! I asked the homeowner what he was thinking. He says at the hardware store the half-inch nipples are three times the price. That isn't fair, says he. 1/2 inch is double 1/4 so the price should be double NOT triple.
Sheesh!
Just amazing what a little bit of knowledge can do.
Enjoy the weekend, everyone!
Good morning .... Coffee to go. ... In a rush.... Leaving with friends in 10 minutes for Evansville, IN where there is a train show. .... I rarely attend train shows anymore, but it should be fun.
Good Afternoon Folks,
It´s one of those days when you wonder why you got up instead of staying in bed. It´s a grey, wet and windy day - one of the kind that coined the phrase "Schietwedder". Nevertheless, November is much warmer than usual and also has been less wet than acoounted for in previous years.
Not much doing these days. I seem to lack any drive. This may be caused by my insomnia, which again is caused by the not so subtle threat we live under.
Found this interesting video on SR´s famous 4501 Mikado:
Enjoy!
It's been a sad week here. My girlfriend's Dad passed away last night.
He's been slowly fading for a while, in and out of it the way Alzheimer's is once it sets in, but he still was generally lucid and remembered those who came to visit. At 93, his mobility was limited, but he still went to happy hour with us each Friday and enjoyed a glass of wine.
Wednesday he took ill with a perforated duodenal ulcer and was hospitalized. They could do nothing for him. He was simply too weak to survive the surgery they could have tried.
This was a guy to admire. He lied about his age to join the Navy in World War 2, and fought in the Pacific as radio man on a carrier-based torpedo plane.
His two daughters and two granddaughters were with him at the end. One of the guys who was why his was the Greatest Generation.

Oh boy, when it rains it pours...
I found out my very good friend, co-worker and neighbor's 18 yr. old grandson was killed in an accidental shooting. I hope I have the right words to convey my support and feelings to them in the days ahead.
Mr. B and Ulrich, I hope there are better days ahead, soon. My condolences to your girlfriend and her family.
I hope that's the third leg of the bad news trifecta and we can get on to better days.
Hats off to all the Veterans out there — wherever you may be!

I've got the wood stove fired up and it is toasty in here. Time to visit the train room and try to stay busy to keep my mind occupied.
Are you planning to try to call again, Ken? Been waiting
Flo, give the gang and I a and Ed a Royal Crown. Give Rick a RBF when he shows up again!
Mr B, sorry for your GF lost.
Ed sorry to read about your friends loss. Did enjoy talking with you on the phone! When I saw you post around 2:00 PM I had to call!
After thinking it over, let me know what you think of my idea of powering the blade on the turnout please.
Ed, I'm sure you will think of the right words for your friend, if there are any. We lost our eldest son at 18. One of the worst parts was suddenly having a house full of people who were there to 'help'. People also brought tons of food, most of which got thrown out. Their kind hearted attempts to ease our situation just added to the stress. If I can suggest, keep in touch with your friend but don't smother them.
Mr. B, sorry for your girlfriend's loss. Sounds like he was a fine man.
My condolences and prayers to those grieving right now.
Well I'm zeroing in on a shape for the NWP-SWP herald.
Same shape as this but different colors and text of course.
Good evening Diners,
Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.
It is in the 20s F here. We got our first measure able snowfall Thursday night. 2" and it didn't stick. Ground still too warm. A little early, but not unusual.
We have a family tradition that I hang out MOH's snowman coffee mugs on the countertop tree on the first day of winter or the first measurable snow fall, whichever comes first. I know, it's a little dumb, but I do it every year. I suppose most families have dumb little traditions like that.
Steven: Nice graphic for your logo. Weren't your colors something like a forest or hunter green? I seem to remember something like that, but I could be wrong.
Ray: what was the program that the Rochester Phil played? It must've been very good to impress an old pro like yourself.
My wife and I are going to try to see at least one program by the Elgin Symphony this season. I'd like to see the Haydn symphony 94 "surprise", along with the Bruch violin Concerto in Jan. But we may have to wait and catch the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 in Feb. instead. Either way, it'll be good.
Just whipped this up in Adobe Illustrator Draw.
The fonts aren't size matched or centered perfectly but its close enough to show.
Ed and Mr B I am sorry for your losses.
A sunny but cold day in the Mid Atlantic.
Hardly any word on the morning news about the end of WW1 100 years ago. The last US soldier to die was from Maryland, a man of German extraction, who if you can believe the newpaper (a rare thing these days) decided to charge a machine gun two minutes before the war ended. Suicide?
This is how tributes to Unknown Soldiers came about.
Good Afternoon Folks!
A rather gloomy day here. More rain, but way to warm for the season. Despite the warm weather, nearly all the leaves have dropped by now.
Not my time of the year!
Ed and Mr. B. - I am sorry to hear about the losses. My prayers go out to families and friends.
Steven - I have been following up on your logo design ideas. For my taste, your latest creations lack a little railroad feeling. I can picture them on the doors of a truck, but not necessarily on an engine. The one shown here is a mix of styles, combining an art deco-like shape with modern 21st century style fonts. It not something that I would be going for. Actually, it is nquite difficult to judge a design without seeing how it is incorporated into the overall look of an engine.
Keep on trying!
Lunch was again a rather frugal affair - just bratwurst, mashed potatoes and red cabbage - very traditional. The mashed potatoes of course, freshly made, not that ready-mix concrete like tasteless stuff.
Nothing really doing today (again) and nothing planned for the evening - not even running my trains.
Lunch time!
Not much going on here I got paged into w*rk at 5:15 this morning for something the "help desk" ( helpless desk more like it) could have handled. Then they paged me for all the tickets they had overnight. Atleast they waited to page. Again they were all something the help desk could have fixed.
Our Museum had a food drive yesterday. I don't know how much if any we took in as I was on call for work. ( free admission for donation).
I got my shower faucet fixed, it had started dripping so it needed new seats and springs. 5 min job after I had to go buy new channel locks because all mine were missing ( there is atleast 1 mandatory trip to the hardwrae store on any plumbing job. )
I also put a new walking belt on a treadmill we bought at the thrift store for $12
Mrs MLC needs to be able to walk during the cold winter so we got a treadmill. Belt slipped after it warmed up so I got a new one off of Amazon for $64 with free shipping. so $76 for a nice treadmill is not bad.
Condolences for those who have lost freinds and love ones.
I may build a fireplace fire and be lazy the rest of the day.
That's the font I'm using, the problem is I'm using Adobe Illustrator Draw on my phone to do it and can't import the font itself so when adobe capture converts the text image into a "shape" that I can paint it makes th font look wonky.
Good afternoon from the beautiful West Coast. Sorry to hear of the heartbreak going on for some of our friends here. That kind of thing seems to come in waves sometimes and puts into perspective how fragile life is.
The end of WWI has been getting a lot of coverage for the past few weeks here as it should. My Grandfather was a medic in WWI and I have a lot of his kit still, as well as Photos. He was right in the middle of it all on the battlefield and at some point was also driving an ambulance to and from the battlefield. At one point a convoy of ambulances was at the front and the one in front of him and the one behind him got direct hits from German artillery. How he survived he never knew is what he would tell us on the rare occasion the war came up. He suffered lung damage from the gas attacks that seriously affected him his whole life and took his life at too young an age in the early 1960s.
Just came in from cutting the front lawn, I will try and get the back done before dinner. We have about an acre in lawn and it is covered shin deep in maple leaves. Two passes with the Deere will have them all vapourized creating a good source of nutrition for the grass.
The wife and I and two dogs went out for a walk the other day and just kept walking and walking. We ended up doing 17kms. We were sure hungry when we got home, it was such a beautiful day we just kept going. Saw tons of wildlife of all sorts as well as lots of birds heading South. We breached the forest about 9kms from where we started and there was a TV shoot going on for a show called "Riverdale". The main cast members all came over to see the dogs (at least they said they were all the main Characters) and we then headed on.
The wife had a bad fall along the edge of a river but carried on like a trooper. I took her out for Sushi when we got home.
The kid wrote a major Law paper on when morality clashes with the law. He had been moved to a higher level than his 2nd year usually permits and this enabled him to give opinions on the subject instead of the usual sterile response afforded to the lower levels he had been in. He has been getting amazing responses as it is getting forwarded across the land by his Professors. I remember discussing the issue for a couple of hours with him when it was 0300hrs his time a couple of weeks ago on FB chat. Thought of Dave and his stack of Gordon Lightfoot records in University. The kid plays Lightfoot for hours all the time when he studies.
I will have to get on with the tour of the West, but for now, it is back to riding the Deere.
Quote for the day.
"The past is humanity's biggest asset".
It's that time again to also remember the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald — where did forty-three years go? (and I'm a day late)
I'm usually not the one to be posting music videos but in this case I'll make an exception.
Some of the 29 mates that died that night were from my neck of the woods.

I really enjoyed our conversation last night, Ken. We old goats have a lot in common
I'd like to know exactly what kind of switch you have that is giving you trouble. The newer Atlas switch points can NOT be soldered to, they are chrome plated pot metal. Power to the points is supposed to be fed from the pivot. Trying to tighten the rivet or the push-on spring clip is nearly impossible with the switch in place.
How hard would it be to replace?
Thanks to all the folks for your support for my friend, Paul's, grandson. The poor boy was playing around with a loaded weapon and, well, that's not a very good idea...
Hello Veterans. Happy Veterans Day. Sincere thanks for your service .
Mr. B .... Condolences for your GF’s father passing away.
Ed... sorry to hear your friend lost his son. Very sad when someone that young dies.
I did not get much at the train show yesterday. I purchased a Lionel box car to include the the Lionel trains under the Christmas tree. Also I purchased an HO flat car. That’s it. Definitely did not break the budget.
Spent the day at the Great Batavia Train Show. Great show as always and well attended. Talked to many folks about the advantage of joining the NMRA, and got home to an email from one who already has used the railpass to sign up. He plans to come to our meet next saturday in Rochester.
up831Ray: what was the program that the Rochester Phil played? It must've been very good to impress an old pro like yourself.
Well, I love most styles of music, but the concert had everything from Clasical period to 20th. Century late romanticizm... Program was:
Kodaly - Dances of Galanta
Schumann - Cello Concerto No. 98, Ahrim Kim, Cello (Awsome!!!) She is the principal cellist with the RPO.
Haydn - Symphony No. 98
F. Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1
All pieces were brilliantly performed! Carlos Kalmar was the Guest Conductor. He is Music Director of the Oregon Symphony and the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. He seemed to be having way too much fun all evening!
OK, I have been up since 4:30 am today and have to get a few more things done before bed, so I leave you with this thought:
Flo, the gang and I will have a please and give Ed what ever he wants!
Is DCC AC power or DC power? I have a power problem on the diverging track on the B line by and on a turnout. When I tested the section I had power and I tested as AC Power with the meter set at ACV 200. Meter was up and down from a low of 2 something up to 15 something. Needle just back and forth?
Sometimes I think I have a pretty smart daughter then I dont ! Daughter took two resuce dogs in Friday. Mother 10 years old and daughter dog 8 years old and neither are house broken. I am fine with that part sort of. She makes dog dipares. But she asked the Resuce " How are they with cats"? She was told "They are fine with cats, they just like to chase them"! What was she thinking! Hum, like to chase Cats should have been a clue don't you think?
Later Ken and they do like chasing her cat around and around the house.
Ken, it's AC - for HO, it should be about 14v RMS (about 30v peak-to-peak). However, it's something silly like 10kHz ... About 150x mains ac, so the meter may have trouble
When WW1 ended my grandfather, Roy Warnica, was sitting in a trench making one of his last entries in his signals book. The entry included the exact location of course as well as the time. He was allowed to keep those books after the war. My brother, Wayne, is in France as I write. Last night (French time) he was in that exact location at midnight 100 years to the minute after our grandfather's entry was made.

That has to be an absolutely awesome feeling to have experienced that, Dave. I often think of all the souls that have "passed this way" when I'm in a historic place, say, Gettysburg or the U.S. Capitol building or even some of the sites of old railroad shops.
Hallowed ground, indeed. Some people choose to ignore history and the people who have made it happen. I embrace it.
Thanks for sharing that story. Regards, Ed
Like many of us, I had a father and several uncles who served in WW2. That generation is all gone from my family now, but my Dad was the last of 12 children, and his oldest brother fought in WW1. He was a fighter pilot who did not make it home.
Ed: I know what you mean about historic places. When I took my family to see Antietam and Gettysburg, I could visualize the whole scene and try to describe it to my family. They would kind of go "yeah, sure!" Oh well. I often try to imagine what the participants of any historical event like that were thinking At the time.
On a somber note, my BIL's parents lived in Paradise, CA. We found out that they had evacuated in time and are safe, but we're sure that they've lost everything.
220 car "hotshot" Port Of Vancouver to Chicago. C.N. on C.P.R. tracks.
This is for Ulrich if he can't sleep!
Just count the cars.
This one is for our friend Bear.
Back when I use to fly I would take ladies for a ride up through the Glaciers in the Garibaldi mountains around Whistler North of Vancouver. They loved it.
Another Monday, already
BATMAN220 car "hotshot" Port Of Vancouver to Chicago. C.N. on C.P.R. tracks.
Now where did CP learn how to ballast track like that? Didn't someone tell them to use a brush and sweep up the excess! I'll bet they wasted ten bags just in this short section. Maybe it isn't glued down yet?
Really enjoyed the flight. I flew across Lake Erie once in a de Havilland Dove. A couple months later that same plane wound up at the bottom of the lake. Ouch!
Jim: I'm sorry to hear of their property loss. Glad they got out OK. Death toll is becoming (or already is) worst in CA history. Add this to the huricaine devastation this year and it makes for some very scary times.
Here's one more with Rick from 8 years ago.
Okay, I just let the dogs out for their before bed midnight Pee. While I'm waiting for them to bring me back a rabbit, here is one more from Rick.
Ok Rick Mercer cracks me up that stuff was great.
Not much going on here this moring. Winter weather might arrive this evening but the guessers are not sure.
Howdy ....
Brent ... Thanks for sharing the videos.
Everybody : ... As I said a couple of days ago, we already put up the Christmas tree. Now, the Lionel train is set up beneath it. I just bought the Central Vermont boxcar. We have owned the rest of the trains for many years. (My wife's large collection of Hummel figurines is in the glass cabinet. )
Good Evening!
What a bad day! Not only did it rain all day long, but to add to my misery, I started to feel sick in my stomach. I didn´t eat any bad food or caught some bug, which could have caused this, so I guess I am starting to react to the permant stress we are subjected to. That´s not good!
Brent - thanks for the great vids!
Garry - love the trains, but I am more the old fashioned guy when it comes to putting up the tree. Mid of November is a little to early for me. In my family, the tree was put up and decorated during Christmas Eve and stayed until Jan. 6th. Our trees were real ones, so in those two weeks the tree had shed quite a sizable amount of its needles. We had a wreath, nicely decorated and with for big candles, though, to celebrate each of the 4 Advent Sundays prior to Christmas.
Just like last year, we won´t be putting up a tree. We hardly spend any time in our living room, so it would be a waste of money, as trees don´t come cheap. We will have a desk-sized artificial tree on my desk to provide a little Christmas spirit. I will put it up on Dec. 1st.
Oh, btw - the Christmas pickle ornament is not a German tradition
Zoe, could a have a mug of chamomilla tea, please?
More on the Christmas Pickle
The tradition of the Christmas Pickle has got to be one of the strangest modern Christmas customs, in that no one is quite sure why it exists at all! In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection! Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present. However, the claim that it's an old German tradition seems to be a total myth! Not many people in Germany have even heard of the Christmas Pickle! (Similarly in Russia virtually no one knows the supposedly Russian story of Babushka!) Some families now have the tradition of hanging the pickle on the tree, with the first person/child to find it getting a present. But it probably didn't start in Germany! There are two other rather far-fetched stories linking the pickle to Christmas. One features a fighter in the American Civil War who was born in Bavaria (an area of what is now Germany). He was a prisoner, and starving, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and gave a pickle to him. The pickle gave him the mental and physical strength to live on! The other story is linked to St. Nicholas. It's a medieval tale of two Spanish boys traveling home from a boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn for the night, the evil innkeeper, killed the boys and put them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the same inn, and found the boys in the barrel and miraculously bought them back to life! There is an old legend about St. Nicholas rescuing boys from a barrel but the barrel was originally holding meat for pies - not pickles! So it's most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle! The American city of Berrien Springs, MI (also known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World) has an annual pickle festival held during the early part of Dece

When I first heard about the Christmas Pickle, I bursted out laughing. I have never seen such an ornament being sold here, nor have I ever heard about this rather odd custom. We have friends from all over Germany, but none of them know about a "Weihnachtsgurke".
Edit: Wikipedia tells me that this an American tradition

I think it was thought up by a pickle ornament salesman.
The Christmas Pickle is as much a German tradition as the German Chocolate Cake is German. It was named after Samuel German, an English-American baker who supposedly invented Baker´s Chocolate in 1852. This chocolate became the main ingredient for a chocolate cake invented by one Mrs. George Clay in 1957, which she named "German´s Chocolate Cake", honoring the inventor of the chocolate she used.
Good evening diners,
Yesterday was Veterans Day and I forgot to stop by and thank the veterans here in the diner for their service, my hat goes off to you gentlemen, thank you.
I'll just nudge the jukebox.
hey now, the pickle is the best ornament on the tree :P
Hey guys, hows this?
I got the font to not come out wonky after processing.
Chloe - I will take that RBF from Ken. Thanks! (And thank you Ken!)
Weather - Little Tidbit of the day - Today, November 12th, is the day that, Erie Pa set a odd weather record. It was clear back in 1911, and it is very unique. They set the record low temperature for the day, 11/12, in Erie at 18F. This record, from 1911 still stands.
Remember, 11/12/1911 is the record low temp holder for Erie, at 18F.
They also set the record high temp for Erie for this date, 11/12, that day, in 1911, with a daytime high of 71F.
Coincidentally, That record also still stands....
So, the record low temperature in Erie Pa for 11/12 is 18F set on 11/12/1911.
The record high temperature in Erie Pa for 11/12 is 71F set on 11/12/1911.
Yep.... I choose to live in, arguably, the strangest weather location known to man....
And, now, when you want to impress someone with useless knowledge, you have some ammo.
Other news - The creator of Spider-man, Iron Man, and many others, Stan Lee, has died... A super hero to super hero's found a nemesis he couldn't beat.
W*^k - They goofed up on a sign, and asked me why I hadn't hung it. (It says we will be doing something, that we won't be doing.) So, I answered that the signage is not quite correct, and, therefore, is not hanging.
I was then asked, why I don't just explain it to customers when I am asked, and hang it anyways.
My answer, quite matter-of-fact style, was that I simply do not get paid enough to have that argument every day for the next week and a half.
Yeah, I'm not going to be explaining to my customers that, even though the sign says this, we (and I by rule) will actually be doing that instead... It just isn't worth the hassle.
And, though I may not post all the time, I at least peek through the windows to see who is sitting down as I wander by.... So hello to any I missed.
Hope all are well, and all have a good day.
Flo, give the gang and I a and Ed a Royal Crown! Give Rick another RBF if he needs a refill!

Rick I had that kind of day my self. Spent the day with Nancy the owner lying and idiot wife. She made me hang up posters of old sales we could no longer give the customer? Told her Nancy we cannot offer this any longer! She said No one reads them so just hang it up. I asked If no one reads them why hang it up in the first places.
Ed really enjoyed talking with you again tonight! When I make it to Ohio you may not beable to get me out of your potting shed caboose! Funny we both happen to be running Erie Bulit at the same time! First time I smiled all day I will add.
Hello, Folks
The snow is just beginning here at 0330 Tuesday. I don't have the blower mounted to the tractor just yet but I'm at least a consistent procrastinator. I didn't expect the lows to be down SO low so I had some freezing of the water pipes in the caboose. So far, the only real damage I see is the split housing on the filter. Hopefully that's all. It was supposed to only go to 30° (-1) night before last but when I went to the rack it was 21° (-6)! Caught me a little short. I usually have the water lines blown out by now

I really enjoyed the conversation too, Ken we covered a lot of ground and didn't even get into politics! We stuck with Cadillacs, muscle cars, trains and, of course, how to keep those women in our lives happy (and preoccupied), so we can play with Trains!
Speaking of ErieBuilts:

And I had an A-B set of C-Liners running, too. I just put Loksound decoders in these. They took off with a sixty-four car train like nobody's business. I have the other A unid getting loaded with a new sound file as I type. These old Proto 1000s run like thoroughbreds and pull like mules.

I hope everyone is well these days. Haven't heard from Track Fiddler in a week or so? Wonder if he's OK?
I hope, too, that those folks in California get some relief soon. Such a tragedy.
Well, that's all that's going on in Ohio these days, Back soon...
Lunchtime!
I just finished off a plate of mashed potatoes, red cabbage and spam, all of which were leftovers from previous meals. I am looking forward to some freshly cooked things coming up now.
The weather is just as bad as you can imagine. Lots of wind and lots of rain. Add to that the leaves being blown about your face and any time you´d planned to spend outside is immediately reduced to the minimum.
Things are getting uglier here day by day, but I try not to get let down by this. My animalistic instincts tell me to get out of here asap, but we just down have the means and tools to do this - yet. If we had the means to buy a small piece of property and put a 800 sqft. log cabin on it, that´d be heaven!I doubt that the roughly $15k we can scratch up in an orderly retreat by selling our marketable worldly possessions would suffice.
Well, at least dreaming of freedom doesn´t cost anything!
Mornin' guys!
Flo, I'll have coffee - strong and black today ...
Steven - Not a bad color scheme, though the font looks a little too "1980s computer company", rather than "railroad company" -- but maybe that's just because I vaguely remember the greenbar days .
Ulrich - Have you spoken to one of the consulate offices already? If not, it may be a good idea ... at the very least, perhaps get some answers you seem to be needing.
I will have a waffle and greasy hashbrowns.
We had our first Sn*w this morning, not much but enought to turn the ground white. Mrs MLC thought I was lying about snow, but she saw it for herself.
Steven, your logo does look kind of 1980's computer company.
I need to get some Christmas pickle ornaments for my office cube. We have a co worker who hates pickles. We got him a "yodelling pickle" one year. The Dollar Tree had pickle ornaments last year I need to load up.
Just Google yodelling pickle if you want to see one.
Friday we go to Nashvegas ( Nashville) to pick up some new furry freinds. We are adopting new guinea pigs to add to our current ones. We have been trying to figure out names and I was told train names are out..... (sigh)
Another winter storm is supposed to track through here Wed into Thursday I have a feeling that it is going to dump some snow.
Rick and Ken, I know all about " just hang the sign" and then they are not the person who has to beat the customers off when the sign is wrong.
Well enough rabmling for now I guess I better pretend I am working.
moelarrycurly4We got him a "yodelling pickle" one year.
Ouch
Dan - we have the info on what conditions must be fulfilled to be accepted and are building up the necessary documentation. We also have info on what kind of support we may get, so that side is pretty much covered. Nevertheless, we need more funds to cover the time it would take to settle in.
Ulrich, that sounds like a pretty good place to be in -- sure, money is always a worry, but you know it's still possible to get over here (rather than being given a flat 'no' by the consulate).
It's probably a small consolation, but don't forget that the US was built on nothing more than a faint glimmer of hope, and hard work...
Never hear of a Christmas pickle until it was mentioned here. It immediately brings Arlo Guthrie's song, I Don't Want a Pickle to mind.
Walked into my LHS and saw the unbelievable. A guy walked in and said he bought a Bachmann trainset at another hobby store a month ago and it stopped running. He seemed clueless about the warranty card included in the trainset.
The owner opened a new train set with the the same BNSF engine, tested it on the test track and handed it to him and said "we will take care of it"
The guy said he drove 60 miles, because the original hobby store refused to help him and he would purchasing all his future supplies at this store that helped him out.

Hey! That's where I get the connection, too. Remember the "Sperry-Rand" logo of the early '80s?
So, while "doing the Google" for the Sperry logo I stumbled across a site you may find helpful, Steven.
https://www.logolynx.com/
I guess it is a "logo database" for corporations to use so as not to infringe on another registered design.
It may be handy for you to browse some of the different designs. For instance, I clicked on this category and found all kinds of distinctive logo ideas:
https://www.logolynx.com/topic/railway
You just might stumble on something that you like.
Good morning, everyone, from a wet and snowy NE Ohio.

Now there is customer service.
Ed, I was ... uh ... just old enough to use those old green-on-black terminals at MHR library in the early 1990s. So, don't remember much about specific companies, unless they're nintendo or atari or something.
Reason for the , I should have stayed at work! It was Peacful and Proitable. One customer all day and made a extra $55.00.
Train / Bird Front. Got home and went in the garage and saw a B&O freight car on it side, hum that seemed odd. Maybe I bumped the layout last night? Came back out and it seemed I had 6 rolling stock on there side? Then I saw the sucker! Some how a Sparrow got in the garage and dive bomb the layout! So far I have not found any bird droppings but neither a less it attacked! Of corse it was in the hardest part of the layout to reach!
Captial One Credit Card. They have tighten up there security on line. When I try to sighn on I have to have them.
1 E Mail a code
2 Call me at home
3 Text me a code.
Well my E-Mail not working, I don't text so I have them call me on the land line. Not tonight! Seems I left the cordless phone off the hook last night and it was dead. Long story made short, when I called they could not understand why I did not know my cell phone number and why I did not text?
Ed I love Proto 1000 engines! Turly under rated engines.
Knocked out my loading dock in one day.
My 90 year old mother is refusing physical therapy. She does nothing but watch TV and walk down the hall for 3 meals a day and we are trying to keep her out of a walker. She needs work on her strength and balance, but she doesn't think so.
Howdy .....
I am spending only a little time on my coal mine project for the layout..... A lot of other stuff going on.
I visited train friend in the hospital Monday. It is Dan, the guy who has cancer.
Yesterday, we attended a funeral in Tennessee.
I'm leaving in a few minutes for another costly dental appointment.
More and more other stuff..... I just want to work on the layout.
..
Henry ..... your loading dock looks outstanding. ... With my mother, my sisters and I had similar experiences as she lived to 96.
Ed .... I like your NYC FM Erie Builts...... I have a Santa Fe ABA set on the layout now. Cheers, everybody ...
MLC.... You mentioned a Christmas Pickle celbration in the "American city of Berrien Springs" , MI... I used to vist there years ago when my sister lived there for a while. .... It is not much of a city. .. It is a small town, and I never heard about any Christmas pickles when I was there.... They did have a small greasy spoon restaurant where they served road kill pizza to die for literally. LOL
The reason our Christmas tree is up early this year is becasue we will celebrate Christmas early for some of the family members who will be visiting here next week for Thanksgiving...
Well, tomorrow is my heart procedure day. Wish me luck.
My GF got stuck with her Dad's cat after he passed away. She has a big dog and a small cat herself, and didn't want this new cat, who is not people friendly.
Anyway, we haven't seen the cat for a couple of days now. He hasn't touched food, either. He's overweight, but this can't go on forever. We haven't heard him. He may have crawled somewhere to die, but we can't find him anywhere. Or, he may have snuck out and run away. That's my guess.
On a brighter note, we were looking for the cat and I found an old Tyco train set under a bed. It's still in its original box and has never been used. It's set number 7311 and it looks like it dates from the early 70s. eBay dealers are asking $80-100 for similar sets.
MisterBeasleyWell, tomorrow is my heart procedure day. Wish me luck.
I'm wishing you luck, Mr. B, but I'm also passing a little luck on to your surgeon, too.
We have a local "stray" that has been visiting (begging) us for the past six or seven years. I remember seeing him in early June and he hasn't been around since — until just last night! Twenty degrees outside and he came around asking for his bowl of gruel. I thought for sure he had been hit by a car or grabbed by the fox but, sure enough, there he was.
Did GF's dad live far away? I have heard of cats travelling miles to return to their "stomping ground".
Anyway, I wish you well, and your girlfriend and cat, too!
Found the cat, hiding in the basement by the furnace. He still wouldn't come out but we gave him some food.
Good luck, Mr. B!!
Sometimes I love computer then I hate them. Tonight I hate them. My Mortgage Company changed there website and when I tried to log say 4 times it lokced up my computer! At one point I had to crash the computer to get on line. Never did get the house payment made.
Wife thinks there is a new Ice Age coming Thursday. Weather guessers are calling for 4" to 9" on snow in are county. If we get 9" that is a lot for us, 4" well it will be just pretty as far as I am concern.
I think TF decided to just post in the WPF thread, I don't know for sure.
It is COLD here in Louisiana, we brought all the animals in (2 dogs, 4 cats) cause it's 32 right now!
Talked to my (half) sister, shes doing well, were finally starting to have a real sibling relationship which is nice.
Well that's all from me.
Top of page drinks are on me.
I did some digging and found that TFs last post anywhere on the forum was 17 days ago and his account has been quiet ever since, I'll go through his last few comments see if theres a hint to the reason of his absence and I'll shoot him a PM.
Good evening ...... Colder than normal here, too, with a little snow.
Mr. B ... Best wishes to you for your procedure.
I worked on the coal mine a little this evening.
Good Morning!
Greetings from way up north of the 53rd parallel, where the weather is (still) bright and sunny and that wet and flaky stuff falling from the sky is not expected soon!
No plans for the day. I have put all model railroading activities on the back burner right now. I am pondering to dismantle the Märklin layout, box everything up and put it up on the bay to sell. It´ll be a shame to take that layout down, but the parts will fetch a much higher price than selling the layout as it is.
Some mofre thinking to be done!
Rum for them whats uses it, give the rest their favorite poison, my tab.
Temp. 18 deg., wind 15-25, gusting to 40, NW. Snow tomorrow night, 8+ inches forecast. Hate to think what it would like if we didn't have Global Warming. General conclusion at the Island Garage/Beer Parlor was : No one is going to haul lobster traps tomorrow. Most of the traps are offshore in deep water, 50-60 fathoms, and it isn't worth the pounding for a 3 hour run to the East'rd. We are about five weeks early for our winter weather--at least the ground has had a chance to freeze somewhat before the first snow, won't rip up the ground as bad plowing snow. Mr. B. all the best on the heart proceedure, I have had three trips into mine so far, had them put zippers in my groin on the last proceedure.
herrinchoker
herrinchokerMr. B. all the best on the heart proceedure
I´ll second that motion!
herrinchokerI have had three trips into mine so far
I can´t compete with that - the docs only made it twice into my heart, only to find out it is already occupied - for 35 years next week!
Tinplate ToddlerI am pondering to dismantle the Märklin layout, box everything up and put it up on the bay to sell
Hi Ulrich,
It would be a shame to deprive yourself of one of life's pleasures sooner than you absolutely need to. I'd sell it as a last resort. If you are able to move someplace and need the cash do it then.
Mr. B,
Good luck with your procedure. By the time you read this it will probably be over and done with.
This is my 3,000th post.

I just stopped in to announce a meaningless milestone has been reached.
Stay safe everyone.

Living the dream.
The we white flakey stuff came and has lingered a bit. we got about 2 inches and most of the roads cleared pretty quickly as they were still a bit warm.
I sent TF a PM no response yet.
A dusting of snow and now sleet in the Mid Atlantic.
I know someone on another forum that had prostate cancer with a normal PSA. I went to the quack yesterday and he reluctantly examined me. He said he would expect to find a cancer that way only once in 7 years. The only patients he examines that way are high risk patients and those who are urologists.
I passed the exam.
BigDaddyMy 90 year old mother is refusing physical therapy. She does nothing but watch TV and walk down the hall for 3 meals a day and we are trying to keep her out of a walker. She needs work on her strength and balance, but she doesn't think so.
My mom lived to 94 years old, in her last years she was in assisted living. Frequently she would forget her walker and then fall down. Keeping her strength up is a good thing, but then so is not falling down.
Anyway her last fall only gave her a little cut on the bridge of her nose, yet that caused a huge black eye. Apparently some of that caused clot that ended up in her lungs. That did not last too long. RIP.
SeeYou190 This is my 3,000th post. . I just stopped in to announce a meaningless milestone has been reached. . Stay safe everyone. . -Kevin
Hey Kevin-
This is my 762nd post. Not really much of a milestone, but not entirely unmeaningless.
Jaeger shots all around!

Good Afternoon, Folks
I went to the funeral of my friend's grandson last night. When I saw all the faces of the many young attendees, I wondered how many of them would remember this sad outcome due to a thoughtless, irresponsible stunt and THINK before any of them might try similar risky behavior. I came to the conclusion that not many of them would. My mother used to say "You can't put an old head on young shoulders".
Let's have another railroad photo...
BCRAIL Coal Unit Train Pushers, Wolverine, BC on September 18, 1987, West Coast Railway Excursion 03 by Marty Bernard, on Flickr
Wolverine, BC. This scene could easily pass for Austria, don't you think?
While rather chilly here, I'm headed out to the "tractor barn" to do some glass bead blasting on three brass passenger cars that I'm prepping for painting. There is just enough tarnish and gunk stuck in the crevices that bead-blasting will be advantageous.
Enjoy your day!
Good afternoon, everybody .....
Colder than normal here, and there is some light snow on the ground.
Ed ... I like the BC rail coal train photo.
It is hard to believe November is half over. It's been a busy month here so far.
I'll show some photos of our 2002 on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Calgary. Then, the tein had a different paint scheme than it now has.
Our seat was at the front of a large full length dome car. Therefore our view looked over the tops of coaches ahead of our car. The train moves between freight trains, and therefore, moves slowly through the mountains.
Leaving Vancouver on a bridge, you can see the top of roof of the coach ahead of us.
Next, we passed a CN freight train that was to be following our train.
On the following photo, I had walked back a couple of cars so I could get our car in the picture. Our dome car is coupled to the standrad height coach.
CN and CP each have a track on opposite sides of the canyon. The two railrods coordinate operations dedicating one track for westbound trains and the other track for eastbound trains. .... In this picture, we can see a westbound train from our eastbound train.
These photos will get us started on the trip.
I'll be back with more .
Flo, give the gang and I a and Jan some Rocket Fuel!
Jan Great to see you in the dinner again! Wish you stop by more often!
Snow Front Weather guesser where off a tad. They where calling for 4" too 9" and we got a whole 3" of snow. Roads where clear when I did my running. Does seem odd to have leafs falling on snow? Pretty sure it is the first time I seen that happen.
Train Front I have fell in love with Proto 2000 Penn SD-7 so to speak! Have not ran the BLI Bessemer SD-7 with Thundering Tennis Balls for about 3 weeks because of the stalling on a wornout turnout. While I don't think I could speed match the 2 of them I am using JMRI throttles to control each engine but they are doubled headed. The Penn will push the Bessmer if it wants to stall. Should have put the Penn in front of the Bessmer, it's lighting is better! I wonder why?
Evenin' Folks!
Thoughts and Prayers to all who are having medical stuff, and to those who forgot to check out the sn*wblower before the first major sn*wfall of the season.... Weather guessers here are calling for somewhere between 4" and 8" over night and a quick look out the window tells me that it is well underway.
I have the EGO sn*wblower sitting on my porch waiting to be loaded with a pair of batteries and show the nieghborhood here how to take care of the white stuff with style.
Spent most of the day finishing getting everything ready for the NMRA Division Meet in Rochester this Saturday. One nice surprise for all the members who show up will be a one day only coupon for 15% off purchases at a local Major Model Train Store in the area. We will be having an operations event during the afternoon at the Club that is hosting the meet and a local layout will be open for visits as well.
This morning I was part of a Board of Review for a Scout from the Handicapped Troop here. He is a great kid who is planning on getting his Eagle!
This is for all those of you who had a perfect day so far..........
Yep! 14c today and the weather guesser is sayin a week of sunshine ahead. Will probably have to do at least one more tour on the John Deere.
howmus
Janie, I could use a pot of coffee to get me going this morning!!! Oh and a bowl of the high fiber granola cereal you know I like.
I looks like the Finger Lakes Region of NYS is closed by popular demand today..... One local channel is listing 79 closings so far. I doubt I will get my 4 mile walk in today, although the fieldhouse is open. Looking out the window I can't find my car. There is a large pile of white stuff where I left it and the rest of my property has about 6" (edit: Way wrong with that. Actually about 12" to 14" and very heavy and wet!) or more of sn*w on it, so you can guess how I will get my excercise this morning. Jusrt as I was getting out the Sn*wblower and starting one of the local pros came allong and asked if I wanted him to take csare of the 3' or so the city had dumped at the end of my driveway. I asked how much and he said "ne charge" I hired him...... That saved me a lot of work so I helped out a neighbor across the street who was doing it by hand. Asnother nieghbor also came along with his big gas powered job and did most of it as well. I ran out of battery before I could finish anyway.... Bateries are rcharged and I have just dug out the Volt. Right after lunch I will move the car forward enough to finish the area where the car is parked.
BATMANYep! 14c today and the weather guesser is sayin a week of sunshine ahead. Will probably have to do at least one more tour on the John Deere.Smile, Wink & Grin
Well, maybe I should put this up for today:
If I didn't have some places I absolutely have to get to today, I might just let it melt all by itself.
Oh..... And according to my scales this morning I now weigh less than 200lbs. for the first time in over 50 years!!!!!! YES!
Have a Good one and stay safe!
Our weather is sunny and currently in the 30's. It will be in the 40'sthis afternoon.
More phtos of our 2002 trip on the Rocky Mountaineer. These are in the afternoon of the first day as we approach Kamloops. The train stops overnoght in Kamloops and passengers stay in hotels.
Kamloops is in Canada's desert with very little annual precipitation. No trees in sight.
The next moring the train will be divided in two sections. One will go on CN tracks to Jasper. Ours will travle on CP tracks to Calgary.
howmusOh..... And according to my scales this morning I now weigh less than 200lbs. for the first time in over 50 years!!!!!! YES!
Way to go Ray!!
I'm slowly working on my weight. I have pretty much stopped drinking alcohol which is a major change for me. After being a heavy drinker since my teens I thought I would have some withdrawal problems but I haven't. Suits me fine!
Flo, slow day? Well give the gang and I a please.
Slow day to speak of. Took wife to P/T today then to Walmart Market where she ran my legs off. Snow is just about gone and I will miss it.
Train Front Well it seems I finally got the Branchline PRR Centerfon 10-4-1 off the RIP Track I hope. OK, it has made it around they layout about 10 times, make that a 11 and no uncoupling! But I am now hearing a odd sound in certrain parts of the layout, all most like a flywheel slipping on a motor shaft? Maybe the new trucks on the Centerfon, getting a little quiter.
Ed I think I may have a few projects to send you. One is a Texas Type steam engine I got from Jeffery. The manafaucter name started with a M I beleive. It is a 2-10-2. It ran well but Jeffery never went DCC. I started to install a Digitrax N scale decoder but at the time I could not find away to mount a LED so I gave up.
Trains are running well but still a few odd sounds. Going to call the Centerfon fixed so later my friends.
Ken
Still no word from Track Fiddler, hope he's alright...
Anyways I'll be around.
Good evening, all...
Things are quiet here for now. Looking forward to seeing what kind of fun I can have in the train room tonight. I got into a discussion about Railway Post Office cars in the Prototype forum. That got me thinking about the several RPO cars I have. I've never painted, detailed and lighted interiors of any of them... humm, maybe.
cudakenEd I think I may have a few projects to send you.
I could try to tackle some of those projects, Ken, as long as they're not "basket-cases".

Long Live the Queen.
Good evening ...
Ed ... The Royal Train RPO postal card is interesting.
Mr. B ... I hope your procedure went well.
Continuing on the Rocky Mountaineer in 2002.
The second morning, we departed from Kamloops eastbound on our way to Calgary, Alberta.
These shots were on the CP in eastern British Columbia...
It´s a bright, but bitter cold morning. Temperatures made a sharp drop at sunrise, staying well below freezing at the moment but are expected to rise sufficiently above that mark during the day.
Garry - nice shots! Thanks for sharing.
Ed - The BC Rockies remind me very much of Austria. The Austrian Alps are less "rugged" than the Swiss Alps, more of a "Blue Danube" than a wild mountain creek.
Ray - congratulations on the tremendous weight loss! I am also taking care of my weight, but unfortunately in the opposite direction. I eat less but gain weight? How does that go?
A great to for all of you!
P.S. Track fiddler´s lat post was on October 29th, so he has been MIA for about three weeks now.
Tinplate ToddlerP.S. Track fiddler´s lat post was on October 29th, so he has been MIA for about three weeks now.
The last thing I recall was Vinnie asked him to cool it on the "foot to the groin" talk. Maybe that didn't sit well with him?
I liked hearing his stories, though.
I'm enjoying your photo-essay on your ride, Garry. I made a trip along that route in 1973 and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Enjoy the weekend, folks! Ed
Good morning .... I'll have Tim Horton's coffee with an original H donut, plese.
Ed and Ulrich .... Thanks for commenting about the Rocky Mountaineer photos.
Here are two more shots. East of Revelstoke, our train passed over the spectacular Stoney Creek Bridge very high over a deep ravine. Looking down while on the brdge, we saw a large waterfall.
Some one say Breakfast ???
Here we come!
HERE IS WHAT LEOPARDS EAT...
A frosty one here with a current temp of 2F and a windchill of -14F. Hope it warms up later in the week. Did I mention it is sunny.
Ken, that loco Jeff sent to you was made by Mehano. I had the same engine and put a decoder in the cab. I didn't change the light as I couldn't see how to run the wires back from the light as it took its power from the front driver pick-up. That engine was originally a model of a CNR 4100 that was offered here as part of an annual Christmas promotion at a large store chain. I believe a similar engine was offered by AHC. I remember someone here sent one to Jeff and unfortunately Jeff applied one of his paint jobs to it. Ed, there are lots of photos of the real 4100 class on CN steam websites. The Elesco feedwater heater and the front numberboards were the mods made to make it a CN loco. They did run well though. I sold mine as it was just too large for my layout.
Ulrich, I think you might change your mind on the 'Rockies' here if you saw them. In fact they are just one of several ranges that run down B.C. and into Alberta. The rail lines tended to avoid the more rugged areas except the Kettle Valley line that CP closed about 40 years ago.
I don't think we will be going out today except to re-fill the bird feeders. Seed consumption has dropped to about half of October's rate now that the migrants are largely gone. Good thing as I couldn't afford to spend that amount every month on birdseed.
Have a coffee on me,
CNCharlieUlrich, I think you might change your mind on the 'Rockies' here if you saw them.
I guess that would be most likely!
My "Rockies experience" is from traveling throughout Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington State, plus western BC and I bet they look different in the "middle" odf Canada (Jasper, Banff etc.)

I found this ancient thread about them:
http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/79507.aspx
They look pretty good in the photos
Thanks for that background, Charlie. I was buying many of the IHC/Rivarossi/Mehano locomotives in the 1990s before the "next generation" came along. Some were good, some could be made into good (enough) and some were boat anchors.
I still have a few sitting around so maybe I can get Ken's 4100 fixed up and perhaps some of the others, too. We shal see...
How about a view of Kamloops Lake, 1984?
CP_Kamloops_Lake by Edmund, on Flickr
Flo, give the gang and i a please.
Was going to go to my LHS today but wife want to go with so no K-10 Model Trains.
CN Charlie yet that is the engine! Just to bad Jeffery painted the darn thing. I don't remember the headlite being powered by front driver pick up's? Far as the paint job I have seen worst but why he picked the road number as 007 is beyone me?
Ed the 2-10-0 is not a basket case unless you count the paint job. It ran well and power draw was pretty low so not a basket case so to speak. I don't really know why it came to mind other than it was from Jeffery. I will try give you a call Sunday and see if you are up.
Can Proto 2000 wheel rolling stock set slip? Been messing the the B&O box car again and replaced the offending truck again and used the same PK 2000 wheels. Front axel still does not line up with the second one? Will play with a tad more.
Hey guys,
Still now word from TF, perhaps somebody else has got his email?
Well I'm still trying to tack down a version of my RR herald to use for the second transition era (60s through 80s) hows this look?
So the locomotive scheme would be like dark green with a light green stripe and yellow trim. Hows that sound.
Good Evening,
Ken/Ed, yes that is the engine. I recall that getting the N scale decoder in the cab was a very tight fit. I also did a Mehano Hudson but in that case I put a sound decoder in the tender which was actually a lot easier. I didn't put in a plug between the tender and engine so they were always joined. It was a long time ago as I sold off both several years ago. They were too large for my small layout. My Pacific and Mikado are far better size for me. Anyway Ed I don't think you will have much problem getting it running as I know you are very skilled.
Tea time again,
It´s an icy cold, but bright Sunday morning - time for my Sunday special breakfast! Zoe, a stack of pancakes w/ maple syrup, crisp fried bacon, scambled eggs, buttered toast, jam, honey, a tall glass of OJ (something of that breakfast needs to appear to be healthy) and a gallon of coffee in an IV bag, please!
Northwesterly winds blow cold, arctic weather to us - a sign that the gulf stream has moved a little further to the West on its way up north. It means hot summers and cold winters for us and is a regular occurence every few years. Sorry, no climate change!
Steven - your logo is a mix of an Art-Deco of the 1930s/1940s with a 21st century font, but I think I have said that earlier. I don´t think it is appropriate for the era you have in mind. The 1960s were stull rather conservative, but starting from the 1970s, railroads made quite a bold statement in their logos. Look at Soo´s logo from that time.
Finally, to evaluate the logo, we need to know where it will be positioned on a loco on how it´ll blend into the entire silhouette and color scheme. Notr an easy task! I bet you now understand why corporations spend millions of hard currency for the creation of a corporate image.
I´ll be staying at the R/C for a little while, just watching who will drop by!
I hate computers!!!
My hard drive crashed on Friday night. I knew something serious was going wrong earlier in the day because it started to freeze up. Fortunately I had all my stuff backed up by Norton and we were able to install all of it on the 'new' computer. (My son has given me his old computer which still works fine, touch wood, so it is new to me.) It took a bit of figuring out but eventually we got the backup files downloaded. I still haven't figured out how to restore my favourites list or my contacts but I know there in there somewhere.
Unfortunately however, the computer decided that it wouldn't talk to the printer other than to print test sheets that said everything was fine. It took me six hours to solve the problem! Please don't ask me what I did! I did everything I could think of several times. Supposedly, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is a definition of insanity. Apparently I'm not insane because eventually it worked, but I can't remember exactly which steps solved the issue.
Good morning .... Coffee and pancakes with real Canadian maple syrup, please.
Ed .... I like that photo of CP at Kamloops Lake. .... Also, You mentioned you traveled on the CP years ago. ....
It was part of a family trip by rail in the late 1950's. Here is a summary of the trip which took 3 weeks. We started in Chicago on the Santa Fe Super Chief to Los Angeles. We rode the Santa Fe to San Diego where we stayed a few days.... Returned to LA on the Santa Fe.... Rode the SP Daylight to San francisco, and stayed a couple of days.... Rode the SP Shasta Daylight to Portland, Oregon.. Next, it was Union Pacific to Seattle where we visited with some relatives.... Then it was a CP ship to Victoria BC and on to Vancouver BC.... We rode from Vancouver to Lake Louise and stayed a couple of days there. Then we continued east on CP eventually connecting with the Soo Line in ND. We rode on the Soo to St. Paul where we changed to Burlington's Twin City Zephyr for a ride back to Chicago. ... (CP trains had heavyweight equipment, and even had a steam locomotive on the part of the trip that went to ND to connect with Soo Line.)
Below are the rest of my Rocky Mountaineer photos. We headed east and went through the famous Spiral Tunnels to cross the Continental Divide. Then we went into Alberta passing through Lake Louise and Banff to Calgary.
I tried the matte medium on a paper sign and burnished to the wall. Forum member j.c. sent me some tips, such as painting the sign first with white paint to make the white stand out and eliminate the need for painting the underlying wall white.
He said let things dry as long as 3 days. Who has patience for that? My wife was cooking and I put my experiment on top the stove on a cookie sheet. That worked pretty well. I decided to add another sign and since she was finished cooking, I put it in a 220 degree oven. That didn't work so well.
Nevertheless I am calling the experiment a success.
Henry .... I suppose someone can make a joke about your experiment if they have a warped sense of humor.... ..... Oh well; the signs look nice.
BigDaddyNevertheless I am calling the experiment a success.
Cut out the distorted part, and park a city bus in the hole. Then "Sprinkle" debre's all over the bus and surrounding area.
TA-DA ! Mini scene....... ( You may want to include a few Police car's ..... Maybe an Ambulance ... )
Not a lot to talk about tonight. Got the widow A/C out to the bedroom and sealed with plactic. My daughter must really think I am weak and old, Ok I am old. She came over with Shawn so he could get the A/C unit out of the widow? Shawn watched and I pulled the A/C unit and brought it out to the garage. He did open a few door for me.
Ed you dodge another bullet again tonight! Guessing it was arouund 5:00 PM my time, so I think that is 6:00 PM your time. I will try again Monday when I get home from work, so that should be around 10:00 PM your time.
Found my old Bacis Train book from Fort Knox. There some young kid that has my name staring back at me? God was I ever that young? All so found the bible I carried with me when in training
Screw this older and wiser, I rather be young and dumb and full of stuff!
Chloe I could use a nice cup of decaf, please.
Today has been recover from the Meet on Saturday day... I am officially no longer the Superintendent of the Lakeshgores division, NER, NMRA. I was elected the Asst. Superintendent, though. I think 10 years of being Super is plenty enough, and the torch has been successfully passed to the next commander, so to speak. It was a great meet with lots going on and a fun day for all (I hope).
cudaken...the widow A/C out to the bedroom
Gee, Ken, very sorry to that it is a widow! What happened to it's spouse? (Just couldn't resist......)
Family from Florida will be arriving sometime this week (probably the day before Thanksgiving) for the burial of my Sister's ashes on Friday. Hoping we will be able to "tolerate" each other.... My other sister is not getting along with me at the moment. I know she is furious with me because I hung on up her a week ago. She was letting me know that everything I think, say, do or believe was completely wrong again!
Time will tell, I guess.
cudakenScrew this older and wiser, I rather be young and dumb and full of stuff!
I know that rhyme
I decided against posting this last night, but since you brought it up....I received a fundraising email from my high school alumni org. I went to my 20th reunion and there were people there that looked like they stepped right out of the yearbook
There were pics of the 45th reunion and no one looked like that. Surprisingly there was not much obesity. The women mostly wore very busy patterns, checks, paisley, things that old women wear. I was not a jock, so I took some perverse pleasure in seeing that those that were weighed the most.
There were 580 in my class but we were in tracks, meaning I was in the same class with only 100-150 people for 6 years. Homerooms were alphabetical, so that didn't change much either.
There were only 2 people I recognized without blowing up the pics to look at name tags. Of the rest that I knew, less than half bore any resemblance to what I remember. Some I just couldn't recall what they looked like.
There was a RIP track list. Some I remember died in wrecks, drug OD's, AIDS, and cancer. Nobody died in Nam, which is surprising, as we hit the peak of the war. Others made me wonder, especially those, that were the nicest people I remember.
Our 50th is this year. In the past year I have reconnected with a handful of my classmates on Facebook. They are not reunion attendees and I don't think I will be going either. The people, that were athletic or sexy, now look like a bunch of people waiting for their social security checks. Which they are.
Little TimmyCut out the distorted part, and park a city bus in the hole. Then "Sprinkle" debre's all over the bus and surrounding area.
I have a bag full of walls. Some walls are much longer, front walls, back walls and side walls. I have no memory of where or why I bought them or why they are in a bag.
The backward sign, I knew would be backwards. The upside down sign, maybe the same sign, was because I didn't believe my witness mark. The blue signs aren't very good against the gray brick, but that is part of the learning, to know what doesn't work is as important as what does.
The actual process, how the color is transferred, is a complete mystery to me. The matte medium must suck the color out of the paper. It's very little matte medium. In some of the signs there was a layer of acrylic paint between the color and the matte medium and yet it still worked.
The weather is changing again - not as bright and sunny as in the past few days, but with the scent of snow in the air. Our weather guesser say we have to expect that fluffy white and wet stuff coming by mid-week.
We had a nice sunset yesterday around 4pm - a little early for my test, but nonetheless beautiful.
5 weeks till Christmas, Folks!
While leafing through some old documents, I found my old WA driver´s license.
The license expired 43 years ago, but I am glad I kept it! Who knows, it may become handy one day to still have it ...
Good morning ..
Ulrich ..... It would be nice if you could come back to North Ameirca to live. ...
Ed .... I went to my 50th reunion, and everybody looked older than thier grandparents did when I knew them 50 years previously. Some were still in good health. Some not so much. Some sadly had already passed away.
Everybody ....... Happy model railroading.

Did it say how much the reward is?
Maybe I should turn myself in - and solve my cash issue!
Tinplate ToddlerDid it say how much the reward is?
No money involved. However, they are offering all expenses paid transport to the US, plus free room and board. Unfortunately you might be rooming with Big Harold, so you'd have to make sure you didn't drop the soap.
well I had a workbench flood this evening. My workbench is below the kitchen and the garbage disposal motor seal went out, sending the water from rinsed mushrooms down onto my workbench, soaking a VCR, Receiver, At CD player, a minidisc recorder and various other stuff. It took longer to clean up than it did to replace the disposal.
Well when it rains it pours! I mean all out deluge!
So Saturday my truck nearly overheated, I figured there might be a problem or it was just a fluke, WRONG!
On the way to church the heater wouldn't work and the temp gauge was creeping towards HOT, well I said after church I'll sort it out and head home.
I left church and went to my job where I planned to top off the coolant and make a run for home.
Not gonna happen, I found coolant leaking under the truck, pretty bad too so I parked it and got my mom to come get me.
The leak is on the back side of the engine, looking like it's a freeze plug and I might have to pull the motor to fix it (ohh, joy).
Now for the rest of the manure fest.
I get home and certain members of the unkind (my extended family) the really not great ones that you are kinda reluctant to admit they're yours had come around, long story short the manure hit the fan, BIG TIME, luckily none of it got on us.
So my weekend went to heck.
Now for the kinda good thing I was blessed with, theres a girl in my Life Group (Sunday school group) that I kinda like and I was going to approach her had I saw her yesterday, praise Almighty that I didn't see her, after what happened when I got home I probably would've taken it as a sign from the Man Upstairs!
The guy with the 351 block I told him I cant buy it this week because of the leak issue, priorities ya know.
He offered to help me fix it so that's good.
I'm still going to build my 387, just now I'm going to make it a Clevor, I can put Aussie 4V Cleveland heads on a 351 Windsor block and get and adapter to put a 351 Windsor intake on the Cleveland heads.
I got my new "ugly" sweater in that I ordered, my three favorite peices of clothing are: my Hawaiian shirt (which I cant wear now cause its winter, old navy had a Hawaiian Christmas sweater though so I might buy that soon) and my two fair isle sweaters, I'm going to need more sweaters though cause Louisianas supposedly in for a bad winter.
Still havent heard from Track Fiddler, I'm putting a word in with the Man Upstairs that he's alright.
howmus I know she is furious with me because I hung on her a week ago.
Ray no wonder she mad. You hung on her? Just a little pay back my friend about the Widow A/C unit.
Got home and down in the dumps at the sametime. Will not go into detrails of all the problems iike wife forgetting how to use a door knob?
Rear brakes need to be replaced on my car. Heard them grinding on the way home. So I should start looking for rotors and pads! So what do I do?
Called Ed First time I smiled all day! Thanks Ed!
Janie, I could use a pot of a good dark roast coffee to wake me up! Oh and a bowl of non GMO, Organic Granola with skim milk would be nice too. Ah, would you bring over the stevia too?
cudakenRay no wonder she mad. You hung on her? Just a little pay back my friend about the Widow A/C unit.
Too Shay, my friend!
BTW, She called me a couple days ago and never mentioned the incident. I think she may have figured out why I got upset....... Maybe she is learning?
Kitties go see the Vet this morning. I'm hoping the Vet won't tell me that Manet is getting worse or that his time has come....... Don't want to deal with that right now. His tumor does appear to be growing. But... He doesn't appear to be in any pain and is still the loviest cat I have haver seen. I woke up this morning with him snuggling next to me and my arms wrapped around the little guy.
[edit] Boys went to the vet.... She didn't check Blackie's blood sugar as she wants to see it in the afternoon after his insulin has had time to work.... He just got his dose after I got home with Manét..... She say's that the tumor is growing, but he is not showing any signs of distress yet so he got a new Rx for the prednizone ear rubs. She also said the med has already doubled his life expectancy with the lymphoma. Or, should I say he have already lived twice as long with the tumor than expected if he wasn't being treated....
I am in a much more comfortable mood at the moment!
Have a great day out there!
Good morning, everybody ....
Yesterday, we went to Kroger in Murray to get groceries needed for Thanksgiving. Some items on our list were not in the store. ..... The reason: Kroger truck crashed early in the morning. Some of the items we needed were in the truck. It crashed just 6 miles away from the store. ... The driver was not injured, thankfully.
Bear ..... Those look like very fast motorcycles ! .... The cheese rolls look yummy.
Ray .... I hope Manet will be okay.
Ken .... Maybe you will be lucky this time, and you need only brake pads.
MLC ... That sounds very messy.
NWP SWP ... I miss seeing TF's posts also. Hopefully, he is okay.
Maxman .... LOL about Ulrich's picture in the post office.
Just stopping by for a nightcap while heading towards the hay. It´s been a quiet day, staying snug inside while a strong "norreaster" is blowing the few remaining leaves from the trees. There will be a drop in temperature tonight and I kind of expect the first fluffy white stuff for the season to cover the land tomorrow morning.
Lion - very nice picture!
CU all tomorrow!
Garry: That was quite the Kroger wreck. Ripped the wheels right off the trailer.
Ulrich: sleep tight
Hopefully the workbench is dry.
Another cool day here but it is supposed to get above freezing on Friday.
Yesterday we had a Piliated Woodpecker at our suet feeder. We do get them from time to time. It was reported on the news that a coyote had been spotted near our house. We live near the river and an old golf course(now owned by the university) so there is a lot of bush near us despite being in the city. I was wondering how wide the river is near us and I estimate it at about 400 ft. It might be a little wider but who knows.
Yesterday I ran the N scale a little and 'planted' some fir trees I bought some time ago. It looks better. I was running the RS18. A nice little loco. I might give the HO a go later.
I have started going back to the gym. It is long overdue. Yesterday I did 2 miles in about a half hour which isn't too bad but not up to Ray's 4 mile pace. I also did some work on the machines as I want to improve the strength of my back. The plan is to go 3 times a week. I won't be there tomorrow as I have to go in for my semi-annual glaucoma check. That means taking the bus downtown to the clinic as they will be dilating my pupils so no driving allowed.
A very quiet afternoon here. My wife is out with a friend of hers so just Robbie and I doing not much.
Sure hope Track Fiddler stops in soon.
Not much else new.

Good evening diners.
Thanksgiving forecasts are a high in the low 30's and to hear the weathermen carry on, you would think we will all freeze to death faster than Lott's wife turned to salt.
Painted some of my layout today, flat areas where I haven't decided exactly what to do, but it needed some sort of tan color. Also did some weathering on one of my DPM buildings with Hunts' Weathering Mix

Alcohol based, @ $9 a bottle seems kind of expensive, but it comes in a variety of colors.

We are supposed to be in the mid 80s for Thanksgiving. Might cool down into the 60s for Christmas.
Good Morning, Folks!
It´s currently a rather uncomfortable 34F outside, cloudy and quite stormy. The wind still blows tons of leaves about one´s face, so the time spent outside will be minimal again.
I woke up early this morning - just in time to operate the morning commuter train to Schaffhausen . I hadn´t run a train for a while now, but operation was as smooth as ever. Those tinplate tracks and the 3-rail AC minimize track cleaning work a lot - all I do is run a track cleaning car now and then and clean the wheels. Märklin locos have up to 4 traction tires which leave quite a bit of gunk on the rails and the wheels.
Petra is already in the kitchen, starting to prepare our lunch. We will have a very traditional German meal today. It´s called "Königsberger Klopse" - the descriptin to be found here and the recipe on this page.
Today is a very special day for Petra and me. It is the 35th anniversary of our first date. It was actually a kind of blind date for both of us, as we had never met before. I still remember seeing her for the very first time. It was as if lightning had struck me. She must have felt the same way. Only a few days later, I moved in to her place. The following New Year´s day (a few minutes past midnight) I popped the question and surprisingly received that "Yes, I do". Only business trips and sickness have separated us since - unfortunately too many times. The only thing I regret is that we only have one child. I always wanted to have a big family, but by the time we should have thought getting started on #2 child I had my first heart attack. The thought of maybe leaving Petra behind with two little ones to care for put that idea on the back burner - for ever.
Petra and I sure have a life which is coined by the phrase "for richer or poorer, for better or worse". We had many years which were of the richer and better kind, but since a few years, it´s the poorer and worse determining our days. But we still have each other!
Ulrich,
I swear if I ever make it to Germany, I'm stopping by for dinner! It doesn't matter what time of day I see your posts about food, they always make me hungry! Your's and Petra's story reminds me of my Grandparents, although they were a little too young to move in together that quickly (She was 16, he 18, and at that age in 1943, it would not have gone over well!). They both knew right away and were married within a year.
Regards,
Mike
Mike,
the two of us were close to 10 years older than your grandparents and we both had a "previous life". While I was hitched up with a girl in Paris for 3 years (which meant drivinbg down to Paris each weekend - 600 mile round trip), Petra was engaged to a psychiatrist who appeared to be his best patient. We both knew what a relationship means and what we have to do to keep it up. Hard work, I say, especially in bad times!
Our Thanksgiving visitors are on their way here. I might not have much time to post in the next few days.
So everybody; Happy Thanksgiving !

Obviously you never heard of the 45 minute rule.
I told my girlfriend that I would never drive over 15 minutes to have lunch or 45 minutes for a date. Since she lived 44 minutes away I married her.
maxmanObviously you never heard of the 45 minute rule.
Distance doesn´t matter when you travel with the wings of love - in my case it was a Mercedes 250 with a perky 6 cyl. engine, capable of doing speeds in excess of 125mph, which I did quite often - at least until I found out that there is a speed limit of 75 mph on motorways in France. Finding out had cost me dearly ...
Howdy .... Our company arrived. So will be busy with them until Sunday.

Remember when Amtrak had dining cars?
Amtrak_TG by Edmund, on Flickr
I sure miss those days...
gmpullmanRemember when Amtrak had dining cars?
Yes, I do.
But, by the time I was ready for my train trip, Amtrak had reduced it's menu to a choice of .....
Slightly burned Macaroni and cheese,.... heated in a microwave. They called it " Choo-choo Chewie's" .
OR,
A small Pizza.... also heated in a microwave.
This was in 1993. My last vacation, from Portland OR. To Denver CO..
( My "pilgramage" to Caboose Hobby's. )
This one's for you Ed.
Thank you for that sentiment, Steven. That's a nice tune to dance to but I was thinking more along the lines of Ms. Streisand's soothing timbre.
Or perhaps... Bob Hope's (a Clevelander) Thanks For The Memories?
By the way,
Wilson wanted to mention that today is his tenth anniversary since following me home from GE.

Flo, get the gang and I a and a space heater.
Not much to talk about till a few minutes ago.
Work was slow but with it the day before thanks giving I knew it would be. Read 250 pages of a Clive Clusser novel so that should give you a idea of how many customers I had.
Reason for the As I was posting heard a poping and then no hissing sound coming from the gas furance that heats the garage. Just great, I now only have a 1500 watt space heater to heat a 500 sq foot garage. That is not going to work this winter.
Happy Turkey Day Folks

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

It was -21C this morning (-6F).
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone south of the border.
Happy Holidays Diner's. I thought I should stop by and drop a line.
Sorry I've been a little scarce lately. I'm alive and well, just fine. Thanks for the concern. I've just had a lot dumped on my plate lately, some good, some bad but such is life.
The Bad..... Serious bacterial infection from dental work that didn't want to go away... T-boned by a texter almost totaling my truck... Too much work lately.
The Good.... Got to help with two shows with my Railroad Club, one in town and one a little out of town.
The Ugly.... There is no ugly, this isn't a Clint Eastwood thing
I have my daughter over for Turkey Day and some family time, should be fun.

Glad you weren't hurt — hope you get on the mend soon, TF!
Thanks to all for the Thanksgiving wishes
I see Amtrak had some coupler-height problems* near Albany last night with the Adirondack. Real-life imitating our models. Glad no one was hurt there, either.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/22/us/amtrak-cars-disconnected/index.html
Some say two cars uncoupled, others say the locomotives separated from the train. One guy was the "savior" because he pulled the emergency cord. Well, the train-line was already separated? Smoke and sparks reported was from the 440V. HEP, I'm sure.
*Or did somebody leave the Kadee magnet energized?

Hey track fiddler!
Good to hear from you, truck problems must be going around, my truck is down and out, shes going into the shop next week, I would work on her myself but my dad (who still technically owns the truck) does not trust my "mechanical" skills.
Out of the hospital. I've got a pacemaker now. It's a bit larger than a decoder. And, I'm a Craftsman kit now! They put me back together with CA. Really.
I think the dessert topping was caulking, too.
Top of the page. Had some wonderful blueberry pancakes this morning at our local diner. They put so many berries in them that they have got to be good for you! Blueberry pancakes on me, with Canadian maple syrup too please!
Hey Mr. B,
Glad to hear that things went well for you!
TF,
I'm glad you survived getting T boned. The truck can be replaced.
Cheers everybody!!
It´s been one of those Grrrr! days!
First, my computer was acting up. Well, it wasn´t my computer, but my browser. I installed Google Chrome, which made thinks worse, tried MicrosoftEdge, which wasn´t a help, either. Now I am back on Firefox, which i re-installed, hoping it´ll run better than before.
The second Grrrr! was an unexpected visit by our landlord. Visits like this usually mean bad news and so it is. The guy has the nerve to ask for more rent - a whopping 20% increase. This means no more feeding the piggy bank and even digging into our food budget. Relocating is currently out of question, as there is no cheaper place around, so we have to bite the bullet.
I am not happy.
Happy Thankgiving to all
Ray, glad your proceedure went well, welcome to the electronic age---
8 deg. F, wind to 30, one of the coldest Thanksgivings on record here. cleared just over 8 inches of 3-5 forecast from the driveway with the snowblower.
The Island Garage and Roadhouse is cooking a turkey in a wood cookstove, took down a large cornbread, and a pumpkin pie my wife baked. Some of the other grub coming is haddock fillets, lobster, smoked fin&haddie with mashed potatoes, and the Island version of eggnog--qt.rum, qt. whiskey, and enough eggnog to make it turn color.
We are having a brined turkey breast with all the usuals, time to poke more wood into the stove in the living room.
Prayers for those in need, best to all.
Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate the day! While I do celebrate it, I chose to not go anywhere's this year for several reasons. The main one being work. While I was suppose to have a nice long 4 day holiday with most everyone else, we had an emergency come up yesterday that will require my attention tomorrow, after the oil change appointment for my truck that I have scheduled for 9:30am.
On the train front, I did buy some stuff frmo both Walther's and Micro-Mark today (kinda treated myself to a few early Christmas presents).
So with that, I am off for the evening.
Take care everyone!
Strang Thanks Givinig for us this year. We ate at Golden Corral. Food was so so over all. There fried Shrimp was the best thing I ate, first meat loaf was good, second one burnt. There pizza was Ok and tuna sald sucked.
Good part, no left overs that are bad for me to eat.
Bad part no left overs for dinner. Maybe eggs and spam.
Meet my daughter and son inlaw there to eat and over all had a good time.
Mr B Hum, pacemaker the size of a decoder, does it have a Stay A Life in it? Far as the CA glue, they used glue and staples when my wife had her knee replaced.
Bought a new space heater till I replace the dead gas heater in the garage / train room. Lowes does not stock any wall monted gas heaters for some reason? My small electric heater did not work well and I had been thinking about replacing it anyway. I had one like this one befor and works well. While it cannot heat the whole garage I am staying warm.
Track fiddlerThe Ugly.... There is no ugly, this isn't a Clint Eastwood thing
Glad to hear from you, and glad to see your sense of humor didn't get "dented" .
Great news, for me at least.
I got my old computer back from the repair shop today and all my 3rd PlanIt files that I thought were gone are still on it!!!!!!!! I thought they were gone because they didn't show up in my backup files. I'll have to figure that one out but I think I know why.
Mornin' Folks!
Hope all stateside had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday! We had all the usual trimmings and as usual way too much food so the family will be eating leftovers for the next weekor so..... LOL
herrinchokerRay, glad your proceedure went well, welcome to the electronic age---
Uh.... I think you were thinking of someone else..... Probably Mr. B.
Today the sun is shining at least. That is a good thing as today we have the graveside service for my Sister Janice. Found out it will take place at graveside so we will al be bundled up and huddle close together. My other sister will not be joining us as her fear of graveyards has resurfaced and she has no respect for the rest of the families being of a different faith. Not really sure what hers is, actually....... Nuf said about that!
We will then head over to a Mexican Restaurant (I don't like Mexican food which is why my sister insisted we eat there....) My Nieces will be heading to the Rochester airport late afternoon today, will stay at the hotel overnight and fly back to Florida early Saturday morning. I think they have enjoyed being here with the rest of the family. We don't see each other very often... They are almost enjoying the cold up here in the North, but have said they like Florida climate much better. I was telling them about Winter Camping at -10°F last night..... LOL
Gotta get the "Holiday" decorations up soon. I may do this one this year:
Afternoon diners
Wake up Flo, I will have a and if the gang shows up I will buy around.
Dang It Is Cold out here in the garage! It is 46 F outside which is not that cold it cold in here. Did some checking and not one Big Box Store stocks Natural Gas Wall Mounted Space Heaters? Guessing some idot burned down there house with one. I do wonder what the cold will do to the layout? When I got into trains the garage was all ready heated.
Critter seems to think it found a home in my attic? My wife thinks it either a Racoon or a Wild Cat. My self a tree rat all so called a Squerel. We had a bumper crop this year. Not sure who to call, pest control?
Hum need rear brakes on my car, new gas space heater, new roof and now pest control. Does life get any better?
Mr B. welcome back. Is your pacemaker a defibrillator too?
Ken Squirrels are highly destructive you need to make it go away quickly. We used a big national firm, Home Parmount and they were not very good and insisted on calling repeatedly when we cancelled out contract. My best experience is with one man shops. I've never had squirrels.
I'm looking at free standing gas stoves. Imagine wood stove, powered by gas, but no need for fireproof materials beneath or behind the stove. My theory is it will give off more heat that a gas fireplace, which looks nice, but doesn't do much. It's not really in the price range of space heaters though. I'm too old to be splitting wood, plus it's a messy business, bringing wood inside and feeding the stove.
MR Went to Wallyworld today and bought a small strainer for my fly swatter static grass applicator. I'll keep you posted.
edit In composing this post, I clicked on something and am looking at the online version of Jan 2019 issue. Don't tell Steve.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Dyna-Glo-30-000-BTU-Blue-Flame-Vent-Free-Dual-Fuel-Garage-Heater-GBF30DTDG-2/206556619
These are vent-free. Wouldn't they work for you? A couple of my former co-wo**ers had them and they loved them. Infrared ceramic or Blue Flame convection heater.
http://www.ventfreewallheaters.com/buy/pc/viewcontent.asp?idpage=1
If you don't have much open space in front of the heater then the blue flame type would be better. The infrared seems to heat the room faster because surfaces in front of it warm up sooner but if your layout is too close you might have melted boxcars
A heat wave here today, we got up to 34F!!!
Ken, Do you have access to your attic? If you do you could try live trapping if it is a squirrel. I have a live trap that I used to use to remove them from our garage. A dab of peanut butter on the trigger worked well. A lot less expensive than getting in exterminators. I agree with the small guy operations vs. the large chains. We had a problem with carpenter ants in our ceiling a few years ago. I called a few companies that wanted a lot of money but no guarantees. A small owner/son operator got rid of them after a lot of effort and was very reasonable for cost. We don't have an attic so he had to do it by removing pot lights for access. Squrrels can do a lot of damage and will chew electrical wires. Luckily all the wires in our ceilings are encased in flexible steel but newer homes aren't built like that. Anyway good luck.
Henry, we put a gas fireplace in our basement room and it throws a lot of heat especially when the fan cuts in. The room is fairly large at about 600 s.f. and even in very cold weather that fireplace can get the room well over 70F if we leave it on. You can adjust both heat level and fan speed. We did a lot of research before we bought and also wanted one with a realistic fire. After 15 years we are really pleased with our choice. The brand is Napoleon.
I have been running the HO layout a little. The RS3 is now on point and will be heading out tomorrow from Mortimer with a local freight.
Have a good weekend,
cudakenCritter seems to think it found a home in my attic?
Uh, Ken...... I have never ever been in your attic!

Thankgiving report; I had my son't real egg nog, made a month ago, it requires ageing to kill anything in the uncooked eggs with the alcohol, rum, bourbon and cognac.
Did any of you catch the annual dog show on TV. Next to ball room dancing, the dog show people are the most dressed up folks in any recreational endeavor I know of. The change judges for each different breed grouping.
One judge was a tall woman, blonde/whitish hair, high on her head, with the sides and back of her head shaved short, but not bald. She was wearing bright red dress that was cut to reveal her right shoulder and arm edit: her shoulder and entire arm were covered by cheetah spots, I thought it was a see through fabric the Internet thinks it was body paint. She wore short boots, also with cheetah markings.

In a world where women dress like they shopped at Brooks Brothers she made a bold and gutsy statement. Oddly I found her look appealing in a way that nose, lip and face rings are not.
Good morning Diner's! Hope everyone is doing well on this Saturday. Prayer's to those in need.
Well, I've got the MR itch again. While going around the house cleaning and organizing, I am also making room for my 3rd layout.
My 1st one, was back in the late 70's and 80's when I was a kid. My dad got me a O scale 2 pack EL engine set, power and dummy. Then he let me use his layout that had been boxed up for several years in our basement. We set it up on a 4x8 sheet of plywood that I was able to paint roads to drive my Matchbox cars around town, while running the train on the tracks.
My 2nd layout was a Bachmann HO scale set that my ex-wife's father bought for me one Christmas almost 18 years ago. I built a L-shaped layout to run that set on. However, that got dismantled when she and I split in 2005 and the table ended up in my parents storage room (my last bedroom there). Unfortunately, it's not there anymore as they needed the room and I didn't have any place here at my house for it at the time.
So, this brings me to today. I saw a post on the local Craigslist page where someone is selling a 12' x 8' layout table. Now I'm just waiting to hear if they still have it for sale. Here's to hoping they do so I can start building the 3rd layout a lot quicker and prolly cheaper.
Anyways, I am off for now. Hope everyone enjoy's their day!
Take care!
Good Afternoon!
A quite miserable, grey day! Why did i get out of bed this morning?
It´s one of those days on which Murphy seems to stay in and do his work at best. While running a train on my layout, I noticed one of the 3rd rail pick-ups for the interior lighting of my coaches was shorting out at the switches. When I tried to fix that, the dang thing simply broke off. Now I have to find a new one, which I am not in the mood to!
Grumble, grumble, grumble!
I tried to soothe my wrecked nerves by watching a train video on Youtube, only to find out that Youtube videos won´t run properly on my computer any longer. Youtube is changing the codec, packing more data into whatevere files they send down the line, requiring faster CPU´s to unpack for undisturbed viewing pleasure - which my computer doesn´t have.
Jimmy B. - good to see you here again!
JPowell - good luck in getting that layout table!
Yes, my pacemaker is also a defibbrilator. With my history, that's recommended. Beats having to go back in and replace it.
And we have a winner. I just got email confirmation that the table is still available. Seller told me to stop by tomorrow afternoon to help disassemble it and take it. Of course it's not free, but well worth the price, IMO.
JPowellAnd we have a winner. I just got email confirmation that the table is still available.
Good for you! It will feel grweat to be "back in business"!
A Day In The Life Of Pollo
What? You haven´t heard of Pollo? No, I don´t mean the Spanish word for chicken! Pollo is the nickname of a short narrow gauge railroad about a 2 hour´s drive east from my place. The line is a mere shadow of what was once a fairly large narrow gauge net work servicing a serene countryside somewhere between Hamburg and Berlin. The folks operating the line are a bunch of enthusiast with a good hand at re-enacting the daily life like it was in the 1960s.
Watch this video of the "potato train"
Good soggy afternoon from the West Coast. I have been neglecting my duties as host this month, had some things come up I have been dealing with.
You can't talk about British Columbia railroading without including the Kettle Valley Railroad. It is a very popular road to model for folks in this neck of the woods. I found a couple of good video's that do the subject much better than I ever could.
Enjoy.
At the end of this video you will see the Othello tunnels at the town of Hope. The town and the canyon around the tunnels were where they filmed the first Rambo movie, you may recognize it.
The water tower at the beginning is the one in my avatar. I stop by when I am going that way just to have a look at the ghost.
I have driven a lot of the line just to do a little ghostly railfanning.
North of Rock Creek.
All the best for all.
Ed I know I can order the gas spaces on line and pick up in the store. I just found it a little odd they stock none in the store. I all so wonder about there return policy and how I get my military discount on line? There is no way in Heck my wife would let me install a new one my self! My so all plan is buy a new wall mount gas furances in hand, call my furances guy and have him see if he can fix the old one. If not will would you install this one please.
Took me two hours using the leaf blower and rake just to have butt clean the front yard. Did not even tackel the side yard. I will be feeling parts of me Sunday that I have not felt in a while.
Bear You sure have big Mosquito's where you visited! When I first saw the front end photo I thought P-38, but there was no 20MM cannon and machine guns where not right. The plywood wonder and a great fighter bomber.
Hello everybody .
I am briefly stopping here in the Diner. I hope each of you had a good Thanksgiving.
I'll catch up with your posts in the next couple of days.
Today I went to the LHS, I was split between a Accurail ATSF boxcar and a AMT 73 Mustang, I chose the Mustang, so now I have to try my hand at painting and building the car.
I also got two Preiser Santa Claus figures in the mail, ones for Mike at the MSMRC the others mine, I'm doing a lighted Santa Fe train for the MSMRC Christmas Open House.
Well I might stop by again in a bit.
Had to go up to Ardmore Airport, South Auckland on business, so called into a colleague’s hanger to see what he and the boys are up to.
Bear!
That is amazing!! Cudos to the guys who are doing all the work.
My dad flew as a navigator in Mosquito night fighters for a few months during the war. His job was to guide the pilot up behind an aircraft approaching England that wasn't supposed to be where it was. He would wait until the rather primitive radar screen was almost fully lit and then tap the pilot in the shoulder. The pilot would hit the guns for a couple of seconds and then pull up hard and to the left. The reason for the sudden change of course was that if you had hit your target it was likely to be breaking up right in front of you. Sometimes he said that you could see the exhaust flames of the plane before you opened fire. Unfortunately they never knew if their target was actually the enemy or an ally who was off course. He never said how many 'kills' he had.
When you drive around southern Ontario you will see lots of forested areas where the spruce trees are all planted in neat rows. They were planted by the Boy Scouts and others during the war in order to supply the potential need for construction materials for the Mosquito and anything else that might have used the same concepts. The trees are now quite tall and very skinny, and all the boughs are at the top. They were planted very close together and never culled so they have fought each other for light ever since. There is almost no undergrowth, just needles and fallen branches.
I am prepared to say with 99.99% certainty, that he knew what the aircraft type was, that they were shooting at.
That is probably true, but I can only relate the story the way my dad told it. He was reticent to discuss what he went through during the war, but he did open up a couple of times. He said the worst part of the whole affair was going for breakfast after a night raid (he was a navigator/bomber in Lancs for a while too). There would almost always be some empty tables.
Bear,
Was the bird a local build?, or did it come from England/Canada?
Top of the page, mug up, my tab.
It´s Sunday!
Time for my regular Sunday Big Breakfast! Make that coffee in an IV bag, crisp fried bacón, scrambled eggs, toast, butter, jams & honey, a stack of pancakes w/maple syrup, sauxsages, but leave out the OJ, please! It´s too healthy!
Bear - my folks wouldn´t be able to tell whether the Mosquito was made in England, Canada or south of the Equator - they only saw their "bottoms".
It´s another grey day. I am afraid that won´t change much until Spring springs next year. We have decided to put up a few bits and pieces of Christmas decoration to lighten up the grey days. Hope that helps. I have to say that our apartment is lacking daylight - too few and too small windows to get theat bright and airy feeling. The time for a change in location has definitively come!
morning all!
Been a bit hectic here with Thanksgiving and all - hope everyone who celebrated had a good one.
Ulrich, it's quite amazing how a little green can brighten up anything this time of year.
Got a spare hour?
Why not spend it watching a video on my favourite Swiss mountain narrow gauge line, the Berninabahn?
Sit back, relax and enjoy!
Flo, the gang and I will have a and for the brave of hearts some of Jan's White Lighting. Good to see you again Jan!
Over all pretty boring day. Did get a major Honey Do off the list, I hope? Front door had started sticking a few years ago. I have used a hand held sanding blocks many times with some results. But again and again my wife cannot get the door open? Yea at times it feel snug but never a real problem for me.
So today I went to Lowesand bought a Black & Decker Palm Sander for $24.08 with tax with my discount. I was surprised when I saw Vertains Only Parking Spots! Good for them! Sanded the heck out of the door and works smooth as silk. Wife is happy so I am happy.
Ed All most been a year that I have had the Mighty CB&Q's F7's and I Have not killed them! They are my main heavy pullers and still beat on them like rented mules! Thank You again Ed.
Well I noticed today my scalp felt a little thin, I shot a picture of the top of my head and sure enough I'm going BALD! It doesn't run on either side of my family either, I'm thinking its stress or a vitamin disorder, I'm making an appointment with a Dermatologist tomorrow to get this straightened out before it's not just thin it's gone.
Luckily I'm tall and theres still enough hair that it's not too noticeable, but I've gotta get it fixed before it becomes worse.
Tomorrow I'm going to get my truck towed to a shop to get fixed.
Well I'll be around.
NWP SWPLuckily I'm tall and theres still enough hair that it's not too noticeable, but I've gotta get it fixed before it becomes worse.
Good luck with that!
NWP SWPWell I noticed today my scalp felt a little thin, I shot a picture of the top of my head and sure enough I'm going BALD!
That´s quite early, but neither unusual nor seldom.
NWP SWPI'm thinking its stress or a vitamin disorder
Unlikely, probably related to "manhood", i.e. your level of testosterone.
NWP SWPbut I've gotta get it fixed before it becomes worse.
That won´t happen, I am sorry. You´d better settle into the situation and let nature take its course.
My son was quite upset when his hair got thinner and thinner, starting at the age of 18.
Better to just grin and bear it with dignity!
I've been off for Thanksgiving vacation for so long that when I came back to the Forums, I actually forgot what month it was. I clicked on the Diner thread and thought the month had changed. "Wait, it's November already? I thought the end of the month was still a few days off... and didn't we already visit British Columbia recently? Wow, there's already a whole bunch of posts in this thread..." Honestly, it took me about 10 seconds to realize that the month hadn't changed, and I had clicked the first page of this thread instead of the last.
I can't figure out if I need less time off, or more.
Anyway, have some coffee and donuts. That should wake me up.
good morning ..
Our company is gone now , and we are trying to get everything back in order. Our next adventure begins in the middle of next week. ... Busy times.
Steve O ... thanks . I’ll just have coffee . I ate too much in recent days , and we still have large quantities of good leftovers. ... I know what you mean about being forgetful. Too well. LOL
Lion. ... your subway photo is excellent.
Everybody ... have a nice Monday .
Thanks, Steven O., for offering us doughnuts - I gladly have some. A little sweet thing now and then makes a grey day bright!
I actually "played" with my trains today and enjoyed it!
Great photo, Fra Leo!
Yeah Ulrich there ain't no way in heck I'm going to "accept" going bald at 18, ain't happening.
NWP SWP Yeah Ulrich there ain't no way in heck I'm going to "accept" going bald at 18, ain't happening.
Tinplate Toddler NWP SWP Yeah Ulrich there ain't no way in heck I'm going to "accept" going bald at 18, ain't happening. There is hardly anything you could do about it - other than buying a wig, providing you don´t want to take the risk of a treatment with estrogenes, which may have side effects you don´t want. Think of Telly Savalas or Yul Brynner
Rio Grande. The Action Road - Focus 1977-1983
Yeah I'd sooner go with the Telly Sevalas, Yul Brenner, Bruce Willis look!
I've got nothing against being bald, I mean if I was in my late 20s early 30s I'd say so be it but not at 18, I'm not ready for that!
Then again it might help me get the chicks
My son´s hair started to thin when he entered puberty. We consulted a dermatologist, who confirmed that there are certain treatments, but none of them really effective. We decided against taking any risk and he fairly quickly settled into the new situation.
For hundreds if not thousands of years men have fought battles against balding, but none of them was ever won!
NWP SWPThen again it might help me get the chicksConfusedWhistling
Maybe if you stopped worring about this you wouldn't lose as much hair.
I actually haven't bothered with girls much since my near miss with the 14 y/o, I was just adding it for some comic relief.
Anyways it's cold here in Louisiana! 50° on the mercury right now!
The hair thing----when I reached the point that it looked like a ostrich egg in a hummingbird nest---I just shaved off what was left, 50 years now.
One advantage is the stubble keeps a wool watch hat in place under the hood on oil skins. Great non-skid.
My maternal uncle lost his hair when he was in his 20's. The president of my med school class, must have too. He wore the most matted down, filthy toupee you can imagine.
Shaved heads are still in. As much as I hate shaving, I have no understanding as to why that is. I have had a beard most years since 1975.
My brother in law is a missing person tonight. He should have been home from work 4 hours ago. He is 70 years old and in so-so health, he has not run off with his secretary, nor does he travel through dangerous neighborhoods.
My SIL says she has called the police and all the local hospitals. I think I need some prayers.

well I have been cleaning the workbench flood damage. Not too bad, the TV survived, I think the receiver survived as well. The mini disc player had water in it but only in the bottom of the case. the circuit boards were set off the case so they did not get wet. the VCR survived and the CD player appears to have survived.
Smoke test next
Speaking of hair. Instead of ba;d I have had gray hair of some sort since 20. I have never colored it. I did not care nor do I care if it is gray. I do get the " you hair makes me look old" from Mrs MLC.
Prayers sent!
Hello everyone! New guy in the diner! I'll have a cup of coffee, and some apple pie if there is any left!

Thanks Garry and Mammay. Welcome to the diner Mammay, do you have something else we can call you by?
SIL actually didn't call all the possible hospitals, but there is still no news. He works at Ft Meade, so car jacking is unlikely nor could he have driven off a highly busy road without anyone seeing an accident.

Yeah, my screen name is awful! lol it's my last name, not sure what I was thinking when I created it back in the day. My name is Joe.
Edit: Somehow my BIL was duped into thinking his daughter was abducted and is withdrawing money from bank accounts. He is safe, as is his daughter.
oh man glad he is ok, and was stopped in time before he sent the money. Scary world we live in.

Henry ... Glad to hear he is safe. Scary situation, however. I hope the police catch the crook.
Joe ... Good to see you in the Diner. Feel free to visit with us and tell us about your Model railroading .
MLC. ... Sounds like the flood was a messy one to clean up.
It's sad how intelligent people can get conned into some crazy stuff.
I saw a Dr. Phil once where a woman who had worked for Homeland Security was convinced by someone online that he was Tyler Perry and she had actually married him and mothered his children!?!?
Glad he is safe!
It was a phone scam. He should know better. There are two versions. One you get a call from someone who calls you grandfather or grandma and says they are in some kind of jam and need money immediately. The other is a claim of outright kidnapping.
I don't know any of the detail but paying a ransom didn't do Lindberg any good.
BigDaddyOne you get a call from someone who calls you grandfather or grandma and says they are in some kind of jam and need money immediately
Yea, and when you say something like " Johnny, what trouble are you in", and they think they have the real name, they dig deeper. Had that once. I had fun with the scammer on the phone until he hung up.
Mike.

I will sit in the back corner, as I have not been feeling well.
Zoe - I will take one (or two) of those left over doughnuts SteveO brought in. (Thanks SteveO!) And a nice glass of hot cocoa. And, share the hard cider I brought in with those who can have it. (Yes, I will take a small amount of that. Thanks.)
SteveO - Yep. It's still November. Just don't as what day or year it is, that I might get wrong!
Joe (Mammay76) - to the diner! Make sure the staff gets you some virtual goodies on my tab please.
Weather - Snow and snow and more snow forecasted. "Winter Storm Warning" is in effect now.
Health - Been down the past few days with asthma issues. Got put on new meds, both for maintenance and for temporary "feel better", with a oral steroid course (that I dislike, but will help with the breathing) and a antibiotic to combat the (evidently) infection (unknown location) that was presenting via a (quite high) fever. If this don't work, more agressive treatment, and possible hospital visit. (Given 48hrs for a marked improvement in breathing.) And that I don't want.
W*^k - Took today off to recuperate. BlackFriday was SLOW.... But there was zilch for traffic around the store area either. (VERY unusual...) Seems everyone got it out of their system on Thursday night, when we were closed. (The company I w*^k for, has decided that Thanksgiving is not the time we should be trying to sell merchandise.) Saturday was extremely slow as well, so I was given Sat off. (Good thing, with the asthma acting up.)
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!
Bigdaddy- so glad to hear your father-in-law is ok. My heart just stoped when I read your post.
I too have been lurking in the back row of the dinner for some time and have enjoyed everyone's conversation, but after reading your post I felt I just had to say hi and our prayers are with you.
Well, what a day! It started snowing yesterday and didn't let up until this morning. I think we got about a foot of snow. We don't usually get this much snow this early. And this was a wet heavy snow, the kind that stick on the trees and make artistic pictures. The commute this morning was slow go. It was one of those mornings where you just relax and go with the flow. Of course, there's always someone in a 4 wheel drive who thinks they can go like usual and invariably end up in the ditch or stuck by the side of the road. I made it to work ok only to get stuck trying to drive into the parking lot. I was able to back the car out after a few minutes and went around the block thinking I'd try another driveway. Mistake! I got stuck worse than the first time. This time it took a couple of the warehouse guys to help me out. I then went back around the block and asked the people across the street if I could park in their lot for the day. They said yes. The rest of the day was uneventful and the commute home went ok. Thats my little adventure for the day. Actually, it was kind of fun.
Thanks Bis, I appreciate that. In the bigger picture, probably the number one reason why someone his age doesn't come home, is that they aren't coming home ever. On that basis, the news is actually good.
I'm glad you came out of the closet, so to speak. There is a big difference in lurking and getting involved. As one of my friends on a different forum said, " I love my computer because all my friends live there" Hopefully he, and you, have more friends than that, but getting involved and interacting with others is different than just watching the show.

Flo give that gang and new folks a if they like. I will take some that will warm me up, dang it cold in the garage!
Boy I am missing my gas space heater! It is 24 F outside and the garage / train room is maybe 50 F? Even with both electric heaters on either side of me and two sweat shirts and sweat pants and Iam still chilly. Trains don't like the cold either! Short line is shut down and not sure why. Main line engines are making some strange sounds, but the more they run the quiter they are getting.
Heney Glad things are sort of Ok family wise. Sorry he got scamed and lost money but at the same time glad he is Ok.
Steven Hum, join the military and embrace the lack of hair! While I hope you can beat Mother Nature, the cards are stack aginst you. Good luck.
New Folks To dang cold for anything past that!
Frozen Ken posting again with no feelings in his finguers.
Scams,
Recieved an E-Mail last week advising me that my password had been stolen, and if I would deposit $877.00 worth of Bit-Coins in the account (numbers provided) all of the X-rated films that I had downloaded, along with the captured footage from my camera, would not be released to: (pick a medium).
I did provide some racey photos of snow, deer, flowers, my dogs, fish, footage of a fishing boat on it's trial run, while I was working on the engine.
Downloads that might be racey were mostly operation of WWII aircraft, true, there was some nose art involved, status of 4014, gandy dancers, different methods of keel and frame replacement on a wooden boat.
None of the above I considered to be worth $877.00 in some BitCoin account.
That, plus the fact I do not have a camera on my "puter", figured that I was being "Fished". Sad that there are those who will panic upon recieving a message like that and send off the money.
Had a chat with my ISP, and was advised that this is a new scam that has started around this area, and that I was one of many who had contacted them.
So----if some of you get a "gonna tell all your secrets if you don't pay---" probably would'nt give it the time of day. FWIW
haha, got the same one meself -- "from myself" right in the spamfolder (I sometimes read them for chuckles).
Though, to keep safe from actually getting your email account compromised, remember to change your passwords every so often. I go with the time changes, right after checking the smoke detector batteries.
Remember 4 years ago cars parked on the street and the street itself collapsed onto the CSX tracks in Baltimore? It almost happened again yesterday, 2 blocks from where it originally happened.

I sea those donuts. I am on my way to Bismarck to recycle about 12 dead workstastions and servers. At least they will not be in my office anymore.
I will go past BEARSCAT which is the best donut place this side of the Hudson River. You got to get in betwenn the cop cars.
No other things to do, I'll drop off the goods at the Recycler's place and then Have me a poppy seed bagle toasted with roast beef sandwhich.
Too bad the zoo is not open today, I'd stop in to see RAMU.

it is time for suggestions for our location in December. Any thoughts ? Maybe Lion can treat us to donuts in North Dakota .
Speaking of donuts , there is a good donut shop In Hopkinsville, KY called Whistle Stop Donuts next to the CSX track.
Happy Model Railroading .
I still have to get used to having less than 8 hrs. of daylight. And that will be going down by another hour before Dec. 21st!
All quiet at the western front. The local Antifa hasn´t been molesting us in the last couple of days. No more letters in the mailbox and stickers on our car. They must have targeted other people than us. I don´t think we are safe, though. I bet there will more fun coming right at us soon!
I do like donuts, but they don´t beat the feeling you get when you step into a German bakery and see and smell those umpteen different kinds of goodies on offer. For anyone having a sweet tooth this must be heaven!
Heartland Division CB&Q Joe ... Good to see you in the Diner. Feel free to visit with us and tell us about your Model railroading .
Don't mind if I do! Quick stuff about me: I'm 42, and a full-time college student. I am pursuing a P.h.D. in clinical Psychology at the University of RI, specializing in PTSD. I'm a disabled combat veteran, Married for 12 years, and a father!
I am currently modeling the Alaska Railroad in N scale. I am making a version of the MR "Canadien Canyons" layout, in winter scenery. I'll be starting up a post on the forum within the next few weeks to share the build with everyone!
I also have a small HO scale shelf layout of the Providence & Worcester railroad's Slatersville running tracks nicknamed "the Slate". I attend weekly operating sessions with some great friends and modellers in RI and CT, on their fantastic layouts. I love prototypical operations, and just recently got into dispatching the above mentioned layouts at operting sessions. They all have JMRI, signals, block detection, the whole nine yards!
I'm looking forward to my time here!
Wow Joe ! Thank you for your service, and your dedication in your post service life to help others.
Welcome to the Diner, Joe and Bis!
Did someone ask for suggestions of where to go next month?
How about a town with a powerful railroad tradition and a name that matches the season -- Bethlehem, Pa.?
Steven OtteHow about a town with a powerful railroad tradition and a name that matches the season -- Bethlehem, Pa.?
Bethlehem is a great suggestion, IMHO. I remember being there for the 1971 NRHS Convention and going on a Lehigh Valley excursion.

The Steamtown Museum in nearby Scranton, would be a nice side-trip, too.

Glad to see you here, Joe the more the merrier!
Hope all is well with everyone!
Thanks for the welcome.
I have been sitting in the back for awhile, just didn't want to bust in on such interesting conversations.
Good evening ....
Bis ..... Welcome to the Diner. If you want, please tell about yourself and your ,odel railroading.
Joe ... I'm very impressed by your background information. Thanks much for serving ! ... ARR is a very interesting railroad. I was in Alaska several years ago, aand I did ride in some locomtive cabs when I was there.
Steve O .... Thanks for the suggesytion. Bethlehem, PA would be appropriate.
My Two Cents ..... I would like a larger area than a single city. The entire state of Pennsylvania has large amounts of interesting railroading places to visit. So, I would not wish to limit our visit to just one city. ....

Hope the VA system is treating you better than me when it comes to heath care. I was on hold today for 10 mintues, transfer to the wrong clinic and got a machine? Don't get me wrong, they do give good care when you finally get to the right department. Getting there is the battle.
Trains do not like the cold that is for sure! With the train / garage heater dead and it being 20 F outside they are making some strange and not good sounds. Thursday we will be in the 50's so with the spaces heaters I might be Ok.
28 degrees outside in Atlanta right now. This is ridiculous. How do human beings live in such conditions?
I am going back South to get some warmth.
I think I will go to Key West on Friday and spend the whole day at Schooner Wharf to recover from this.

Thursday we will be in the 50's so with the spaces heaters I might be Ok. Later, Ken
Hello Ken! I was in the Army as well. Stationed at Ft. Polk in Lousianna. I then did some time in the reserves, Deployed to Iraq in the beginning of 2004. years of service was from 99-06. E-5 Sgt. MOS 63B20 (light wheel vehicle mechanic)
The VA has been pretty good, I honestly can't complain. Funny VA story though, about a month ago I was having similar symptoms that I had from when I was having a stroke in 2016. (not the typical stroke symptoms) Dizziness, severe headache, balance issues, nausea. So I went to the VA's ER, told the receptionist my symptoms, and I was a previous stroke victim with these same symptoms. I waited in the waiting room for 30 minutes....I went back up and said, "you did understand I was having stroke symptoms correct?" She said, "Sir, I have it written down, You walked in under your own power I don't think you are having a stroke so you will be seen in the order of arrival." Dumbfounded I said, "Your a doctor, a neurologist?" LOL!!
My wife looked at me and then called rescue to bring me to Rhode Island Hospital to get the proper treatment I deserved. Funny and scary at the same time! Turns out it was not a new stroke, but Lyme disease.
Coffee and a bagel Flo, please.
A surgeon I used to work with passed away yesterday, cigarrettes and cancer.
My father hated going to funerals and didn't as far as I remember and I got that gene.
I used to like the guy until I found out he was having an affair with one of my partners' wife. Then he had an affair with another partners' wife. There must have been other doctor wives too. A tiger doesn't change his stripes.
His wife was a patient of mine so I guess I have to go.
Heartland Division CB&Q Steve O .... Thanks for the suggesytion. Bethlehem, PA would be appropriate. My Two Cents ..... I would like a larger area than a single city. The entire state of Pennsylvania has large amounts of interesting railroading places to visit. So, I would not wish to limit our visit to just one city. ....
Of course. There's lots of things to see in southeastern Pennsylvania. We can use Bethlehem as our base of operations, and take day trips to Allentown, Philly, Reading, Hershey, and of course the PRR museum at Strasburg. No need to limit ourselves (it's all virtual, after all).
Good morning, Diners !
Steve O .... Sounds like a winner ! ... I just recalled we were in Western PA a few months ago. We should visit the rest of the Keystone State .
Henry .... Sad to hear about the person you worked with passing away. We have been to some funerals recently, and I think it is better than staying home if the person who die matters to you.
Everybody .... We need a volunteer to start the December thread.
Happy Model Railroading, everybody.
Morning all,
Not much to report here, Work bench flood all cleaned up. I will prob find something messed up down the road. My Cd player, TV, VCR and reciever survived. I still have the mini disc player to test. ( it got the most water inside) The good thing is I paid little to nothing for all that equipment at various thrift stores.
Not much on Hobby front.
It is cold this morning.
Will be back later.
Joe, are you from Louisiana or the Deep South? Or were you just stationed here?
I've lived in the Bayou State for the past 10 years.
Saturday is the MSMRC op session and next Saturday is the Christmas Open House.
I set up a special "Santa" Santa Fe Christmas train.
NWP SWP Morning folks, Joe, are you from Louisiana or the Deep South? Or were you just stationed here? I've lived in the Bayou State for the past 10 years. Saturday is the MSMRC op session and next Saturday is the Christmas Open House. I set up a special "Santa" Santa Fe Christmas train.
No, I was just stationed there. I'm a New Englandah! Originally from MA, now living in RI. Louisianna was interesting! Enjoyed some good fishing, and food while I was there.
Good Evening, Gang!
I see a couple of new faces in here - a hearty from the other end of the Big Pond! Help yourself to the poison of your choice and tell Chloe to put it on my tab!
I spent the better part of the afternoon setting up the early Christmas gift my son sent me - a brand new notebook with 8GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. That should do the job for a while - I hope. He got it from a source that offered a 40% discount on it on Black Friday. In case you wonder, we also have Black Friday Sales these days. Another craze that made its way over the Pond!
Watching train videos on Youtube is now working properly again -oh joy, oh rapture!
Nice video! Thanks for sharing it, Steven!
Henry - sorry to hear about your loss. I guess at a certain age you start to attend more funerals than birthday parties - sad!
mammay76 Funny and scary at the same time! Turns out it was not a new stroke, but Lyme disease.

Bleh, ticks are horrid little critters.
Heartland DIVISION CB&Q thanks for the welcome.
My story is probably boring. But here it goes, we have lived in East Texas for 17 years, originaly from So. Cal.
I had a HO layout in the late 50s until the mid 60s until Uncle Sam gave me a paid vacation to South East Asia. While in the service I was a reciprocating aircraft mechanic.
I now am working on another HO layout that is an "L" shape (12x7). Unfortunately I don't seem to have as much time as I would like to work on it, our place is 12 acres and keeps me busy.
There is lots more but I have probably already bored you enough.

Hey, Joe. My dad was from Barre Plains, Mass, on the Ware River Branch of the B&A. About 22 miles north-west of Worcester. He served six years in the 181st. Infantry:

Glad you decided to stop by the Diner. Hope to see you here often
The snow here in NE Ohio has partially thawed then re-froze. It already looks like a Wintry mess. Just the beginning, of course. Good weather to be working having fun on the layout!
I hope this finds you all well! Cheers, Ed

Everybody: .... Happy Model Railroading ...
Joe, I'm actually a yankee by birth, born in Jersey but was a resident of New York.
Got my truck towed today!
Should be fixed by the end of next week!
Well that's all for me.
Got a call from teh museum today the layout would not run. One of the screw terminals popped of the lionel ZW for ground ( no wonder) so I had ot route it to another on the buss bar. The I was testing the polar express set for this weekends "party" and it kept stopping on the switches on the layout. It had too short of space between the pick up rollers to cross the dead space of the switch so i had make a modification to bring a wire from the tender pickup rollers so it could cross the switches. One of the passenger cars had burned out lamps in it . I had to modify some lamps I had to fit the sockets. They were 18v in christmas lamp type holders. So I had some bayonet styles 14v lamps and I made a wire harness to fit the small plastic piece to plug back into the socket.
The real challenge was getting the passenger car apart. it took 4 popsicle sticks and a butter knife to do so. Lionel's instructions were " push on the 4 tabbed windows and lift up. " yeah right. ( google is your friend )
Nite all
Flo, the gang and all of my fellow Vets will have a please.
Dropped off my Town Car for rear brakes before work. Bought my rotors and rear pads from Rock Auto for $59.11 with shipping. I hated to buy on line but the cheapest rear rotors I could find was $80.00 + tax for the pair not counting the semi metalic brake pads I all so bought. Funny thing, is I have never installed dics brakes in my life. Cannot tell you how many engines I have bulit while racing and brake shoes and drums I have done. But put disc brakes in front of me? Sad thing I even know how they work?
Ed, the thunder tennis balls [Rolling Thunder by BLI] finally got to my wife! Had the Bessemer SD 7 idling and went into use the bathroom. She said "what is that thumping?" It's just the trans honey.
Joe I was a 95 B Military Police. I was a E-5 when I said screw this ash pit. I got out of the RA as a E-4 and went in the Army Reserve and was sent straight to NCOS. Main thing driffrent from RA and the Reserve? In RA E-4 and below did all the work, in the Reserve E-5 did everything?
Later frozen Ken
Good Morning !
Wake up everybody ! .......... I'll have coffee and a pecan roll, please.
Everybody: .... Do we all agree we will be following Steve O's suggestion for December ? ... Assuming it is okay, we will be based in Bethlehem, PA and will be visiting eastern Pennsylvania. ..... (Several months ago we were in western PA. )
We need somebody to open the Diner. .... Any Volunteers ? ....
MLC .... I should go to the museum in Paducah. Are they just open on weekends?
Ken ... You are wise to pay the lowest price for brake parts.
NWP-SWP ... Good to hear your truck will be fixed.
Gooooooooooodddd Morning everyone!
Chloe, I could use a pot of Sumatran, Fair Traded, Organic, French Roasted, Coffee to wake me up!
A hearty welcome to the new-comers here in the diner. (Chloe put their breakfast on my tab, please).
It is 35°F outside under cloudy skies and an occasional flurry or sprinkle today here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS. I like the idea of PA for the new diner, BTW. I'll find some old photos of Steamtown to put up on the wall for us to enjoy.
Few nights ago, evidentally someone tried to make off with my EVSE for the car (Charging cord). I went out to go over to the Fieldhouse to walk last Monday, and the cord, which is usually coiled up on the post of the railing on the deck was on the ground. It was still plugged into the car... but.... The screws holding the transformer fo the unit were also almost removed and the unit was sitting cockeyed on the wall. Now if they had decided to cut the cord..... They might have got a very unpleasant surprise! The output is 18 amps at 220 volts!
I decided to turn in a police report about it, so a local officer came over to write up a report. I figure if someone does succeed in taking it (It is worth about $400) It would be good to have something on file for insurance purposes. Had a good chat with the officer about having an electric powered vehicle. He had heard about the accident over near Canandaigua a month ago where I managed to not t-bone the pick up truck. Told him I figured the only reason I didn't hit the truck was the handling characteristics of the car itself! He said they would also increase the surveilance in the neighborhood for a while.
Trying to spend some time in the layout room the last several days. Have another Accurail car kit completed and on the layout, and getting ready to do some more scenery and some buildings. Will be traveling to one of the Division members house next Monday to help evaluate (judge) some structures for the NMRA Structures Certificate. I have a couple more structures to complete for my certificate for Stuctures and this may give me some added knowledge that I can put to use.
Some free advice:
Have a good one!
Ray people are no darn good. Someone stole Christmas decorations from one of the waterfront homes.
I'm good with Pennsylvania.
How about the first person who comes to the dinner on Saturday start the new month? It's just a matter of copy and paste.
BigDaddyRay people are no darn good.
Well... Some people maybe. I still believe that most of us are inherently good, most of the time! I believe that good people come in all sizes, shapes, colors, ethnithities, and religions, from all over the world! (Just like bad people!)
I would volunteer but the last time I did it people acted like it was some sort of international incident.
Here's the find of of the week,
Now to just get one for myself.
NWP SWP I would volunteer but the last time I did it people acted like it was some sort of international incident. Here's the find of of the week, Now to just get one for myself.
NWP-SWP... if you wish to do it again, that will be good. There should be no problems. I think we all learned to communicate better in advance of the new month regarding what we are doing. Apparently, we agree December will be based in Bethlehem, PA with side trips in eastern PA. .... Nice boxcar .
Ray.... Thieves are everywhere looking for a fast buck. Glad your cord was not taken. ... Recently, we were a target of a scam via the internet, but we did not fall for it.
Lunch time,
I will have Ham fried rice.
Garry, Museum is open Wed- Saturday 12-4 Wed-Fri and 10-4 Sat. Do NOT come this Sat as it will be crawling with Children for the Polar Express party
My "fix" worked on the Polar express train on the layout. It no longer stops on switches.
Good Evening, Folks
Sorry to hear about the damage caused by vandals or potential theives, Ray
howmus I figure if someone does succeed in taking it (It is worth about $400) It would be good to have something on file for insurance purposes.
I'm a big proponent of having security cameras keeping an eye on things around the place. My system has sixteen cameras (some of which are used for the layout hidden yards and such) but there are some basic systems that use four cameras and are relatively cheap insurance. I'm surprized the officer didn't suggest it. Some systems will send alerts to your phone or any number you choose. I can monitor mine on any internet-connected device.
cudakenEd, the thunder tennis balls [Rolling Thunder by BLI] finally got to my wife! Had the Bessemer SD 7 idling and went into use the bathroom.
As long as the "Rolling Thunder" was coming from the layout and not the bathroom, that sounds fine, Ken! Glad you're enjoying the Bessemer and the CB&Q engines I know they're in a good (but COLD) home.
We have a warming trend headed this way for the weekend. Then back to winter-like conditions. Still, good "training" weather!
I have been building this Kibri Factory kit that I have had sitting on the shelf for at least twenty years!
Gearworks by Edmund, on Flickr
Not sure where I'll fit it onto the layout but I'll shoe-horn it in somewhere.
I hope this finds everyone well... Cheers, Ed
Just stopping in for a quick cup of coffee on my way to Ops Night! Looking forward to a fun night of industrial switching. Hope everyone has a great night!
Flo, the gang and I will have a and give the new folks what they like.
Heartland Division CB&QKen ... You are wise to pay the lowest price for brake parts.
Gary the parts are made by Raybestos and that is a good name in brakes. I am to the point I don't think any aftermarket brake parts are that good! All of the aftermarket rotors Bob and I have seen lately come from China. Example in one case he had two of the same year cars in his shop. One owner wanted the best parts and the other owner the cheaps parts. Both set of rotors had the same part number stamp, same ink markings and came from China. One set was $140.00 and the other set $40.00 and both came back for warpped rotors?
Car is done and labor was $89.99 so total cost $149.10. Hope to pick it up Friday.
Ed Good home? Well if they like being ran hard and a lot, yea I am giving them a good home. I will say you have restored my faith in BLI!
Train Front / Weather 51 outside and while I won't say it is toasty in the garage / train room engines seem happy. Not sure what caused the short line to shut down? Cleared the Santa Fe Erie Bulit and A and B, hit the rails with a bright boy and added a little ATF. They are running fine again.
gmpullmanI have been building this Kibri Factory kit that I have had sitting on the shelf for at least twenty years!
I have a Campbell Skull Valley Station that has been waiting on me for 30 years. I also have their Cordage Works, that I don't have a place for and need to Ebay.
I am cold and the house is warmer than I keep it in the summer. It has been very windy this week, but that shouldn't matter indoors. It is deer season in MD but I no longer have a place to hunt and I am just as glad I am not outdoors in the wind and rain.
Evening Diner's
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the British Columbia Canadien Diner this month.
My Grandfather was a Scotch Canadian that moved to the States before I was born. The whole time I knew him, He always wore a tam of the Fraser plaid. He will always be my favorite person in the whole world. Always will be remembered by me and I'm positive by many others.
I lived near the Canadian border growing up on the resort our family once had. That is no more so I travel to go fishing in Canada at least once a year, if not twice if I can.
It has always been my experience, the Canadien people are so friendly I can't wait till the next time I go there. That said, it always keeps me going back.
Thanks for listening Track Fiddler
Henry, I think I have you beat! I bought my Skull Valley in Green Bay in 1974. Late in 1975 I got it out (after having moved 300 miles west) with the intention of building it. I apparently picked the wrong day to start, because after about 1/2 hour of fumbling around, I put all the pieces back in the box with the intention of getting back to it when I was in the right frame of mind. It's still in the box, 43 years later... Gary
(I just saw it on ebay for $58 + $8; think I'll keep mine for kids to unload when the time comes)
Gary, you do have me beat.
I'd like to put a little coupala on it or a Mansard structure. There is one here

Track fiddlerIt has always been my experience, the Canadien people are so friendly I can't wait till the next time I go there. That said, it always keeps me going back.
Thanks Track Fiddler. Most of us try to act that way. There are exceptions.
I have only been to the US a couple of times so almost all of my contact with Americans has been with those who are visiting Canada, and the folks on line here of course. They have all been very nice people. We have American neighbours (Canadian spelling eh!) at the cottage and they have always been great to get along with. At one point the neighbouring cottage was owned by Ralph Evinrude (Evinrude/Johnson motors) and Francis Langford (Bob Hope's leading lady during the WWII, Korea and Vietnam USO tours). They were generous beyond belief. On one occassion when my kids were visiting my parents at the cottage, they were all invited to the Evinrude's for supper. They didn't know that supper was going to be served in Killarney 40 miles away (famous for their fish and chips), and they were going to be taken there on the Evinrude's yacht. Their yacht, the Chanticlare, was 108' long! It had a full time crew of 5. My kids, who were quite young at the time, always talked about the looks they got from the people on the wharf as they went ashore. My family was not wealthy by any means, quite the opposite, but that didn't matter one bit to Ralph and Francis.
After Ralph passed away Francis married Harold Stuart who was at one time the USA assistant Secretary of the Airforce. He had served in WWII as a manager for spies in Scandinavia and had flown in to occupied territory many times. He was an incredible man to listen to! Better than anything Hollywood could come up with!
Ok Bethlehem it is, I'll post the diner at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
Went to the doctor today, I am not going bald! She said that the part lines look thin but are nothing to worry about, it's just because my hair is longer now.
Well that's all goodnight!
Hey Dave Great story.... enjoyed taking it in.
I had the fortune to meet Gino Palucci the owner of Gino's Pizza of Duluth when I was young. I remember talking to him on the dock. He owed an island on Lake Namakan from my recollection.
He was a powerful man. Years after I met him he warned somebody at the newspaper in Duluth about something. He said stop highlighting on a story or I will buy the newspaper and fire you..... That journalist didn't stop.
He did follow up on this threat. He bought the newspaper and fired him.
That man was very powerful, I saw his Island. I still live to this day in awe.
There is a box car. I have one.
I'm Too tired to take pictures and edit it. That box car has Canadian on one side and Canadien on the other side.
I gathered it's a French thing. French Canadian spells Canadian Canadien. It is proper in Canada.
That's all I got Track Fiddler
Track fiddlerThat box car has Canadian on one side and Canadien on the other side.
Yep, that's the way they lettered them:
I don't know when they started this but I recall my dad pointing that fact out when I was a little shaver.
That is a nice photo Ed. If I could only get something on my layout to look like that
Track fiddlerI'm Too tired to take pictures and edit it. That box car has Canadian on one side and Canadien on the other side.
Sometimes the two official languages rules get taken a bit far. I don't have a problem with everything being labeled in French and English, but when the two names are spelled exactly the same in both languages I just don't see why there has to be both names on the label.
November 30th! I just wonder where the month has gone to! It passed so quickly!
Bethlehem seems to be an appropriate location for the month of December. Who will be hosting the thread?
hon30critterI don't have a problem with everything being labeled in French and English, but when the two names are spelled exactly the same in both languages I just don't see why there has to be both names on the label.
Try Europe - products sold in the EU are labeled in German, French, English, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Swedish ...
Got to get going - the usual month´s end banking run.
Good morning, Diners!
Ulrich ... You asked about hosting December. NWP-SWP volunteered. You can look at his recent post.
NWP-SWP .... Thanks for volunteering to move the Diner. .
It would be good if some model railroaders in eastern PA would join us in December. There are some talented modelers there.
Gary Weighmaster. .... Good to see you in the Diner.
Canadian National / Canadien National.... I worked for them for 20 years and never had to speak French. It would have been good if I could when I traveled to Montreal, however. ..... (Funny story follows) In the Montreal area, I noticed several highway signs pointing to a city not on my map. Eventually, I learned "Centreville" is not a city. It means "Downtown" as in downtown Montreal. ....
Here is a photo of my SD24's.
Doesn't sound like Canadians are politically correct enough. Here in the states, the health insurance companies send their explanation of what they pay or won't with translations in 10 languages, including Farsi and Tagalog.
Big Daddy, remember your thread about women in the hobby, well here's a interesting little plot twist, over on the Scale Auto forum I started a thread about my 73 Mustang kit, I've had two women reply to that thread. Confusing huh?
Later!

Ulrich ... Then, we do not have a host as far as I know. .... Hopefully, some PA modelers will join us when they see the location. .... I've been in eastern PA but not much.
Mornin'....... Yep, still morning here in the Finger Lakes. Cut my walk a bit short this morning as I have a host of month end stuff to get done. One of the big ones was to get my Volt in for NYS Inspection. I figured out when I was showering this morning that I haven't gotten that done yet. That could be expensive if the wrong Police officer should stop my car... So I just called the Chevy Dealer and they will get me in at 2:30 this afternoon. Like that dealer better and better!
I think we have enough easterners here in the diner to get lots of photos and stuff for PA without having a formal host from there. I have lots of photos from my last couple trips to Steamtown that I will find and share. I am all in favor of having Steven open the doors for us. We could even take a short excursion up into the Southern Tier of NYS.....
Neighbor had some trouble putting up the Christmas Display yesterday....
Have agreat one out there!
Don´t get me wrong, guys - I am glad when young Steven moves the diner to the chosen December location. It just doesn´t make sense to select a location if no one takes the reigns and acts as a tour guide. We might go back to moving it just to a different track, like we did a few years ago.
Ulrich I'm actually a Yankee by birth (born in Jersey but a resident of New York) we moved away when I was 2 but moved back to Jersey when I was like 6.
I'm sure some people more local to Pennsylvania can and will help out too.
NWP SWPI'm sure some people more local to Pennsylvania can and will help out too.
I hosted the "October Fall in New England" Diner and helped Brent by opening this month's.
IF no one objects, I could host the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Diner. I'm an Ohio Buckeye but no stranger to Eastern Pennsylvania. We have actually been to PA maybe three times in the last year-and-a-half or so.
I actually would like to explore more of the "Hard Coal Region" so if no one has any objection and if I'm not "hogging the reins" I'd be glad to host our visit to Bethlehem.
Strasburg, is nearby, undoubtedly one of the day-trips we will certainly want to sign up for.

That's a great one Ray. Reminds me of Chevy Chase on the Griswald Christmas when he Staples his glove to the house and then flips the ladder back and the bounces off the tree back to the house. Then the ladder clicks and Kaleidoscopes down to the ground. I always bust a gut on that one.
Flo, get the gang and I a please.
Did a lot of running today with high hopes of working on the layout Well I tried to?
Train Front Seems I need a new Atlas Turnout. I installed this turnout say 10 years ago and it had not been a problem. Now if a engine is going strainght through the turnout it will stall? If the turnout is thrown, work's great? Soon as the RS2 or SD7 hits the frog, they stop. Even the longer Erie Bulit die at the frog? Frog is not powered and never was.
Picked my car today and it is nices to have quite brakes again.
Local Deli Stopped by a Deli called Conways Catering here in Maryville IL. Sandwiches where $5.00 each for carry out. Bill came to $11.75 and did not think about it then and paid the bill. Now I am Tax rater here in Maryville is 6% so where the heck did the extra $1.15 come from? If they added a tip for carry out I will cancell the CC payment!
howmus Got my decorations up...
Perfect just leave it. Who wants to untangle that Gobby mess anyway.
Reminds me of my neighbor across the street, Mike, who said I come home from work and enjoy my Christmas lights on my own house for a whole 35 seconds. Then I look out my window at your house across the street and see your Christmas lights beautifully every time I look. So I didn't hang my Christmas lights this year he said, I just look at yours
So the next year I told him your turn..... We had a thing going. We hung our Christmas lights every other year and enjoyed looking across the street at each others
It's a funny thing. On the off year when I looked across the street and didn't see any lights, I knew my neighbor was looking and enjoying my lights, a smile would come across my face. I knew my neighbor was enjoying looking at my lights, so I still felt the Christmas spirit
cudakenFrog is not powered and never was.
That makes no sense that it has failed if the frog was never powered. I'd look for some other reason.
I had my blood drawn a second time this week. Either the doc forgot to order my A1c or the lab didn't run it. I've heard both stories. At any rate it is 5.8 down from 6.2
