Found it! Screws were under the speakers.  Top of chassis lifted off exposing motor and shafts. Noise was a wire caught in a gear tower. It has been a good day.

I am working on a proto 2000 limited edition e8 920 series with the quantum sound dcc board atop the chassis. It grinds topside, a whiny sound in the motor driveshaft area. How do I get to the motor and top gears?  Thanks!
