Due to their small size, N scale couplers can be tricky to get in and out when compared to HO couplers.
You might consider a Z scale version of the 1015. It is the MTL 905. The box (and coupler) is much smaller but the coupler will couple OK with the MTL N scale couplers. However, it looks a bit strange because it is so much smaller than the N scale coupler. Mounts with the same 00-90 screw as the N scale.
I tried this on a rail car where I was concerned with the wheels hitting the box during a sharp turn.

Buddytrains-Searched for a while and did not see this Post. Posted on Bachmann site as well. Think your find confirms I just need to get creative. Starting new layout and slow ramp up of things and Dad gave me the SD-45. Managed to get the decoder soldered in without incident so I will run with it until ready to ramp up on motive power. Thanks!
Returning to the hobby after a long time away so catching up. I didn’t see N scale options on Kadee. The 1015 MT did slide in and all references I saw said that is the best option but it extends inward just a hair too much and hits the metal housing holding the trucks. It also does not fit tight either, where the Rapido housing had two small rails that held it square. If I tighten down too much on the MT housing the coupler won’t move. Dab of glue would work but hitting the trucks is the problem. May try to sand off a little but not sure if anyone had better luck with another brand. thanks
I was curious about your problem so I did a little web search. You are using the correct reccomended replacement. I found a post (from 2008) on another train forum in which another modeler had the exact same problem as you. He only got one useful suggestion:
I used a 2004 coupler. I belive I had either reused the Bachmann screw/hole or I filled in the area infront of the screw hole with styrene and drilled/tapped the MTL screw hole. You may have to file the front of the truck gearcase and/or the back of the couler a bit to make it fit.
The rest of the suggestions were snarky replies that said to place said locomotive on floor and hit with hammer. Not many Bachmann fans out there!

The MicroTrains site says 1015 body mount - should be drop in

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.
I don't have a leg to stand on.
Did it come with a box and the instruction sheet?
Have you checked kadee's website for coupler conversions? Go to N scale and your locomotive might be in that list.
I'm an HO person, but these are my tips
My dad gave me an N scale Bachmann Spectrum SD-45 (Conrail). Thrilled I was able to install a decoder no issues but can’t figure out how to swap the Rapido couplers with Micro Trains. The Micro Train retro fit hits the end of the wheel set on a slight turn. Looking around it sounded like the Micro Train 1015-1 set would work, per their conversion sheet but no go. Anyone with the same Spectrum run into this. Thanks.
