Contests...
Posted by BNSF UP and others modeler on Sunday, May 6, 2018 5:24 PM

Anyone know where I can find good model railroading contests? Seeing as though that recent user video took second place in one and didn't seem too complicated, I think I might have a shot at it. Plus, who doesn't like winning free train stuff (or trying to)?

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

I have not seen any contest entries in Model Railroad shows in ages.

.

The NMRA still has contests, but you need to be a memebr to play in their game.

There was a weathering contest on one of the Youtube channels that belong to one of our forum members.  There are more Youtube channels than any of us can watch and probably more than half of those are of poor quality and a waste of time.  Maybe we need a standing tread of Contests of the Month.

Many contests award certificates and plaques not prizes.  Most contests take place at NMRA conventions and other conventions.  You have to check to see what prizes they may award if any.  Plus be sure to read the scoring rules.  For example, NMRA contests award points for scratchbuilding

The competition can be pretty stiff.  Not to scare you off it, but if your desire is prizes there are probably easier ways to get model train stuff.

The NMRA contests have insane levels of competition...even at divisional. I've entered a ton of "bring and brags" and ivegotten about half a dozen second and third place certificates. Although, Im presently leading my local region bring and brag

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

On the other side of the Big Pond, namely the UK, contests, or should I say challenges, are quite common and so are train shows, were you have the chance to win an award, which may include some prize money.

Happy times!
