Gluing Wheel Sets
Posted by FRRYKid on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 9:45 PM

Got yet another slightly oddball one for my forum friends: What adhesive would one use to glue wheelsets together? I am trying to glue some wheelsets together to model a wheel car. I have tried to use CA to do the job and it wouldn't stick. I need to get them to stick to determine how long to make the other components for the car. As usual, any ideas that anyone might have would be most welcomed.

If what you are trying to glue is Delrin or PP-5 (Polyoxymethylene) Loctite Plastic Bonding System will work.

It’s available at big box stores.

Does the manufacturer of the sets you bought offer any clues in the instructions?

Maybe it's that "slippery" plastic, and you need roughen the surface.

Mike.

EDIT:  There ya go, Mel beat me too it.  Delrin plastic.

I will have to try that. I had previously thought of something along that same line: Plastruct's Plastic Weld, but your suggestion will be easier for me to get.

You didn't say what you are using for the wheels.

.

I would suggest you use the wheelsmanufactured by Tichy specifically for modeling wheel loads on freight cars. They look wonderful and regular plastic glue works on them.

They are being using for a model of a wheel car for the early to mid-70s. The base is a Walthers' GSC kit. The Tichy wheels you mentioned are the wrong era. The chilled back wheelsets were banned from new cars in the late 50s (56 I think.) and banned from interchange in 1970. (Already mentioned in another post.)

However, I will use the Tichy roller bearings (3080) to dress up the needlepoint axles.

I believe the magic in the Loctite is the primer stick.  Regular CA works great with the primer.

OK. In that case I think Mel's suggestion of the Loc-Tite product would be the best option.

Apparently not at my big box store. I even checked one of the local lumber yard/hardware stores. They didn't have it either. I will have to order it somehow.
