Half Price Hobby: quick shipping?
Posted by caboose63 on Saturday, March 31, 2018 10:50 PM

Just ordered a HO scale Walthers Walton & Sons lumber yard kit from halfpricehobby.com. Has anyone order from them? Do they ship items in a few days to a week?

I know nothing about them.  I did check out their website, as they have an ad in MR.

Most folks might have inquired about this prior to ordering.

Or called them:  +1-978-537-2277. and asked for the shipping date... or e-mailed them at service@halfpricehobby.com

But all snark aside, it's a legitimate question to ask what others have seen regarding actual shipping time or other aspects of their customer service.

In my experience with companies that offer this kind of flat-rate shipping in the computer industry, they have or had a working relationship with one of the express shipping companies  for bulk 2 to 3-day delivery.  Whatever they prepped to be shipped on a particular day went in a container or trailer that would be picked up at a (known) scheduled time and presumably go straight to computerized sort at the hub, with the marginal cost to the express company relatively controlled.  Suspect Shepaug uses a similar model on a smaller scale.

I have always considered it a courtesy of CRM to inform customers promptly when something is on backorder, even if it costs an immediate sale.  That is different from the old mail order where you had no idea what they'd have in stock when the snail delivered your order form...

Being a long weekend, I would expect a tracking # by Tuesday end of day or I would phone and ask. Something I always check when ordering online is to see whether it shows "in stock" or not. I won't order if it is not showing "in stock". You never know when you will get it if they don't have it.

I have never ordered anything online from them, but have met them at train shows in MA. So they are the real deal, but I would call or inquire on lead time. Some dealers do take more than 2-3 to ship, especially if they had a special sale or were closed for a few days due to the holidays..

Good luck!
