electrical pickups on Walthers N SW1200
Posted by n2mopac on Monday, March 19, 2018 3:06 PM

I know this is not a new problem, but I have yet to see a solution offered so I'm hoping someone here has one. I got a brand new Walthers N scale SW1200. When I removed the body to install the decoder 3 of teh 4 electrical wipers fell off--the ones cheaply melted onto plastic studs on the body. Does anyone have a good method for reinstalling these that is tried and effective?

Drill out the base of the plastic where the old 'stud' was and cement in a rod of  thermoplastic that fits the hole in the wiper -- you can use something stronger and tougher than styrene.  Then when that joint is thoroughly set, use a soldering iron or heated screwdriver to 'rivet' the wipers back as before.

You could probably epoxy in a small screw/bolt or piece of threaded rod, and use a small loctited nut to hold the wiper, but I suspect glueline integrity (or tapped threads in the plastic) would involve more work and risk than the solvent-and-mushroomed alternative
