Steven: I agree with Dave. The bar through the middle looks very bad. The two tone green is also innapropriate for a herald in the era you said you want to model.

Steven: I think you have a really good foundation for a plausible logo. May I offer a few thoughts for your consideration.
First, I agree with Dave and Kevin. The bar does nothing for you. It completely upstages and effectively cancels the NWP behind it. A logo is a promotional tool and is essential to a railroad's brand. Therefore the important elements must be out front. Corporations spend mucho time and resources to make sure their logos convey the right message to the viewer. In light of that, if you were to keep the bar, it would extend beyond the perimiter of the ellipse, subduing the ellipse, and the font would be larger. Plus there should be nothing behind it. The focal point would be the bar with the name on it. Example: New York Central's logo.
Second: If you haven't already noticed, railroads are not big on pastel colors. Yes, there are some examples, i.e.: Northern Pacific, who used light green as an accent color, but by and large they want bolder colors. Example: Union Pacific and Caterpillar both use yellow, but they are not pastel. This isn't a critical point, but important nonetheless.
Suggestion: this is just a thought, nothing more. What if you did as Kevin suggested and make the ellipse white, eliminate the bar, and either make a concentric ellipse inside the other one and wrap the text around the smaller ellipse, offsetting it to center of the elliptical space, keeping the NWP, or wrapping the text along the edges of the diamond. You could change the ellipse to a circle and do the same thing, but I kind of like the ellipse. That's thinking more outside the box.
Also, one other thing you did well, you didn't pair serif with sans serif fonts. You kept it all consistent.
If you were to make your logo as per the suggestion, you could possibly take advantage of the positive and negative space in your logo. Example: for "steam era" boxcar schemes, eliminate the dark green field in the diamond and just have the outline, lettering, and ellipse in white (Except the NWP, which would be negative space). I think you get the idea.

Steven (NWP), just wondering why you don't use the prototype logo? I think you have already gotten some good suggestions so I won't add any more. Ultimately you should do whatever makes you pleased with it.

I have been getting stuff done for the MLK Committee Scholarships this week, taking Blackie to the Vet today to have his blood sugar checked (it is still a little bit higher than it should be so the Vet is increasing the insulin again...), and do some politicing at church (why not break two rules at the same time... LOL). I have, for the last few years been one of the people in my church working to put together a plan to install a T-coil hearing loop in our sanctuary. There was a person who had said he would pay the cost of it. Unfortunately he thought it was going to cost a few hundred dollars and the plan fell apart. A few weeks back I was talking with my pastor about pushing to do the next step in the sound abatement we need, and she told me she wants to do the hearing loop first. I told her I heartily agreed with her and that I have personal, selfish reasons. I told her I love her sermons and I want to not miss every 4th. word... (Also told her I think she is fun to be around! You should have seen the grin she gave me!!!! Ah well, Hope springs eternal, I guess.) So I have offered to fund the project up to $3,000. The estimate is for $3,500. Tuesday night the project was approved by properties committee and now has to be rubber stamped by the Session (ruling body) of the church. I am listed by my "other" name for the project. You know... Anonymous!
Tonight I have Boy Scout Camp Properties Committee. I have skipped the last 2 meetings and have some sound system requests I want to make sure get voiced, so I guess I best attend that.

Kitchen Remodel: We finally have cabinets!
It was worth the wait. The one custom built cabinet I had made for next to the sink is wonderful and perfect. Not sure it was worth all the $$$, but I got what I wanted.
Ten days from now we should have a countertop, and then the appliances can be put into place.
I am going to try to install the new ceiling fan and range hood tonight.

RAY: I had to go look up a hearing loop. It basically works on technology invented by Nathan B Stublefield in 1886, He thought he had invented radio, but it turned out it was and Induction "telephone". He was from Murray KY ( near me ) Murray claimed for years to be the "brith place of radio" A myth that has been since dispelled. Interesting that 100+ years later it is more common place.

Yeah! Basically all hearing aids come with the T-coil built in today. Most phones, including cell phones have the loop in them to transfer the pattern via induction (Magnetism). The ADA now mandates certain public places to have the system available, I think. Airports, theaters, and many other places will have them. They allow people with hearing aids to hear directly from a sound source rather than something broadcast by a speaker into the space. They come as small personal devices (I used some of those teaching with kids who were badly hearing impaired.) Up to systems used in Sports Arenas. If you see this symbol, the venue is Induction Loop equiped:

Dad Front: Bit of a holding pattern. The infection seems to be getting under control. No indication of the kidney stone. Swollen kidneys however and the creatinine went back up. From what the nurse told me, they're not too worried about the rise. Another blood transfusion. Whole blood this time as both hemoglobin and the volume were both low. (He been getting lots of fluids which is diluting his blood.) Mom got discussing music for potential funeral which led me to mention the possibility of preplanning the funeral. (Mom seems to think Dad has given up, but we shall see.) That way we aren't doing it after the fact and can do it with proper thought.
Laptop Front: The laptop my coworker offered was the wrong size. Ended up ordering a new one this evening. It will be so nice to have the TV for just the TV again.

But I had to "re-arange" a bunch of tool's, Large generater's ( 300 LBS each ) a roto-tiller, and piles and piles of stuff..... all just to get a 10X6 spot to work in.
This is the "Other 10 X 14 space I have to clear out for the layout, I feel your pain, but you will succeed. Clear out "YOUR" shed.... have a garage sale !

Railroading, Problemo numero dos is that the room isn't move in ready, it needs to have the floor insulated and moisture barriered, then get some for of flooring, it needs a door set for between it and the "unfinished" portion of the shed, then there is tin on three walls I don't know if that might mess with electronics or not, also in order to access the restimate of the shed yout have to goffer though that room so if we have to move something out of the back then the railroad cannot be too big. I might just custom build or buy a building specifically for the railroad. I have seen some buildings similar to yours Tim that are within my price range.

Just playing around. You are all welcome to suggest modifications. I seem to recall the old Illinois Central diamond with the wording in the perimiter. It also has the flavor of the ERIE diamond.

I like it, sort of, but I would make a couple of suggestions:
The green and yellow bar doesn't appeal to me. It seems to conflict with the rest of the logo. I would maybe try it in simple black and white.
The words 'Northwestern' and 'Southwestern' need to be reduced in size. As it is, the words seem to run into the 'Pacific' bar. There needs to be more space between the lettering and the bar.

Saw a Patrick Henry Productions, 2 car private varnish on a Facebook railfan site. Sounds like a Hollywood company, but whatever else they do, they rent their two rail cars. $10 grand a day. Maybe the Megamillions will shine on me.
It may surprise out younger diners, but my grandmother used to ride the train for 4 days from her home in Baltimore to see my aunt and uncle in California. In 1961 she and I and my uncle took a 707 for her first flight, at least out there.
Looked at my Stewart F quite a while trying to figure out DCC installation. The headlight is a bulb and it fits into a metal tube that clips into the circuit board, so it doesn't light up the whole cab. I would like to avoid plugs and glueing the led into the shell but unless I glue the metal tube to the back side of the headlight, I don't see how I can avoid that.

Dad Front: Didn't get a chance to actually see him today, but what what Mom tells me, he is getting less stubborn. (Good sign.) Stuck in a meeting with the hospital people. Lately all it's been is work, hospital, home. Off Sunday but even that will be Dad-related. See if Mom and I can find his DD-214. (For those non-miltary people in the Diner, that is his miltary discharge form.) We know supossedly the box with the form in it is in the porch somewhere, but where is somewhere?
Laptop: As previously said, I will be so happy when the new screen arrives. (My typing should improve as well. I find I am making so many typos it isn't funny. You don't see them mostly because I check the TV before I hit enter.)
My Viking roofs showed up from Des Plaines Hobbies today. The castings are flawless. I am very impressed.
They fit the Red Caboose boxcars exactly like they said they would.
This will give me a little more variety. I am only building two.

Been busy today (as per usual....). Took 20 Scholarship applications over to the High School late this morning. I asked the lady at "Check Point Charlie" Which shoe I needed to leave at the sign in desk to go around the corner and see the secretary in the Guidance office. She laughed and I told her I was there to drop off MLK Scholarship Applications. She just waved me on, so I didn't even sign in. Yesterday I would have been frisked most likely as they had a lock down from a threat going on. Not sure what they found on that, but everything was back to normal today. The secretary in Guidance is an old friend who at one time was a secretary at the Middle School when I was teaching there. She hadn't seen me since I ditched the beard and was quite pleased with the change....
Spent most of the rest of the day doing laundry and some other stuff needing to get done around here. I did manage to get down to the basement a few times to start the siphon for the pond in the back stairway (and do wash). While I was there I finished up a bit more on the industrial building I am getting ready for an industrial area on the layout.
Tomorrow I will be going to the R&GV RR Museum Annual Banquet. Our speaker is a retired News Photographer from Rochester who has documented the bridge renewal in Letchworth. I have posted a couple of his photos here from time to time. Should be an enjoyable evening. Don't forget we lose an hour Sunday..... I may change my clocks before I head out to the Banquet tomorrow.

Well I asked my best friend if she would go to the homeschoolers prom, she turned me down because she has to do some stuff at her church that night... oh well, guess I'm going solo.
Work front, cleaned the pool at one hotel for the fourth time this week, that's because the owner decided to lay me off and not add any, ANY chemicals for the past 4 months, when I got there Thursday last week it was green with algae after chlorine, algaecide, and flocculent the green cleared up over the weekend but then revealed mustard algae on the bottom so I put salt, more chlorine, another algaecide, and more flocculent, yesterday the algae remained so I added twice as much salt as before, more chlorine, and a chlorine enhancer broadcasting all of it across the pool, today I added oxidizing shock, I'll check on it Monday afternoon hopefully it'll be cleared up and I can vacuum it all out, I've been doing the pools for about two years now, finally this year I have renegotiated my pay to I get paid by the day not week that's because whether I only did the pools one day or I had to do it 4 days I still got the same rate, now it's daily so I have a bit more money inbound.
Modeling front, nothing much going on, still working on my herald.

Not much going on here. We have our grand opening for the season of the railroad museum tomorrow. CN is bringing "little obie" their operation life saver train ride. I had to go fix our phone system as it went on the fritz this week. It had a bad power supply. I also had to fix our locmotive simulator. We have a "full sized" locomotive simulator that uses a real control stand to drive it. Some one had jacked with the sound settings on the PC and had moved a audio cable so that some of the sounds would not work. It all works good now. I have a new PC and new control circuits going in soon so we can switch simulation programs and run on a PC with 24 gig of memory. Our O scale is coming a long nicely, we added some menards light up buidlings to it and it makes it look neat.
That is about all from my neck of the woods.
FRRY When I got discharged,it was recomended to us to have our DD-214 regestered at our county building,so that could be someplace to look if you can not find it at home.

He spent the past two years battling cancer, and members of that forum strived to encourage him during his battle. It looked like he had defeated cancer, and Coffee Shop members were all completely surprised last night when his brother posted in the Coffee Shop with the sad news. .... I do not recall seeing Eric posting here in this forum.

I don't think there's any formal way of doing that. The RIP track section, to my knowledge, is copied from one month and passed into the next month's thread. So, I would contact Steven (NWP SWP) as he created that post and he can add BIG E's name. We usually use full names as well as screen names for these tributes.

I don't remember ever seeing Big E posting here either. Shouldn't the memorial list be for our members? If Eric was a regular over here then absolutely remember him but why put someone on the list who didn't post here? Just my I too remember him over across the street, but not here. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I've been in here steady since 2010, and I don't remember a "Big E". Maybe a memorial to him would be better served in the "forum across the street".
