Fixing Gloss Coat Overspray
Posted by prralco on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 8:24 AM

I recently renumbered an HO Atlas GP40.  Prior to fixing the decal I successfully airbrushed two coats of Vallejo gloss. I allowed each coat to cure for 24 hours. The decals were applied and allowed to set. I then oversprayed an additional coat of Vallejo gloss but  this time my airbrush must have clogged and caused an excessive amount of gloss to be applied. I allowed it to dry in hopes that gravity would cause it to flow more evenly but it did not. I was left with a small but noticeable ripple which I was unable to smooth out with another application of Vallejo gloss.  Any ideas ladies and gentlemen?

Can you sand it? If your hobby shop caters to car modelers, they may have very fine sanding sheets.

The coarsest is 1500 grit. I'd try 2400 or 3600, assuming the ripple is in a place you can access.

Put masking tape over any hard edges or corners to protect them and check your work often.

The nuclear option is to strip the paint and start over - not too appealing.

Fine sanding sheets can be found in the usual auto parts stores like Autozone.  I think I've seen 5000 grit.
