Hooker Tank car decals in HO
Posted by sandusky on Friday, October 6, 2017 2:37 PM

My project is redetailing and consequently repainting some Athearn chemical tank cars. Some are starting with the hooker paint scheme, some are not, but I would like to have some in the modernized scheme (two vertical rectangles making a stylized "H"); but most of the older design. Microscale doesn't seem to offer these; any ideas of where I might find some? Also taking direction on a reasonable paint match for the orange color on the carbody.

Well, there's at least one set of Champ decals on Ebay...

Color can be a bit subjective, of course but I just made a few comparisons with one of my Tangent Hooker tank cars and a few examples of New Haven Warm Orange on both Rapido coaches and a Kadee 50' box car and they look very close. Bessemer & Lake Erie orange was a little darker.

Scalecoat and Modelflex both have NH orange. Probably others as well.

I believe he's looking for this style of lettering:

The herald, even I can do.  The actual lettering will take some looking, though.  At least it's black.  Could be one of those do-it-yourself jobs.

Somehow I misread that sentence.

I get the impression that sandusky is doing several tank cars, most in the older scheme, but would like a couple of cars with the more modern lettering.

That is correct, Dr. Wayne. About 20 all together, I hope.

As a "Hooker collector" myself, and risking stating the obvious, I will note that Atlas has lettered several tank cars for Hooker.  And BLI has one/some.

A visit to Ebay shows some up for sale.

To expand the fleet, it might make sense just to renumber one of the above.

And BLI has one/some.

A new gaggle has arrived at MB Klein. About $27/ea. isn't too bad for this level of model these days.

Just in case anyone is interested...
