Okay everyone, It's Weekend Photo Fun time. This thread is where we all display what we have been working on during the week/end. I've been in the middle of a move, but I've had a project going on during the week, a former DRGW GP40 unit. I stripped down the Milwaukee road lettering, and got this
So let's see what everyone else has been working on.
(My Model Railroad, My Rules)
These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
Cheers, the Bear.

Bear, Jimmy is lucky that his weekends actually start on a Thursday, giving him four days for the WPF. Sorry you only get three on special occasions.

Thanks for the fine start to WPF this JUNE weekend, Jimmy!
One of the photographers I follow just posted a few photos of the W&LE 103. Reminded me of the 104 that you showed last week.

I have one of those Cary S-2 shells, too, Bear! Never did finish it. I'll have to bump it up a notch on the "to-do" list. I've only had it twenty-five years
Not much new with me this week. I "ran-in" the NYC F3s and had to laugh when I finally figured out why I was having a "problem" with the B unit!
I coupled them on to a fourteen car passenger train of mostly heavyweights and started them on a run around the layout.
Kept hearing odd beeping... and a short while after that I would find the train stalled I simply figured I had dirty wheels since I'd turn the throttle down and back up everything ran fine.
After this went on several more times I began to pay more attention— THEN it dawned on me that the beeping I was hearing was the engineer's ALERTER and the brakes were being set-up on the B unit only after the 20 or 30 second delay!
I installed WOWSound decoders and somehow one of the units defaulted to the Alerter being activated... thought I programmed them both on decoder-Pro with identical settings?
Anyway, I had to chuckle that I should have been given time-off for not acknowledging the alerter and having an unnecessary penalty brake application... my bad!
Lets see more great stuff, everybody!
Regards, Ed
Jimmy, thanks for starting us out, nice work on that engine.
Bear, sold a number of those Cary S-2 shells when I worked at a hobby shop back in the 1970's. Never did get one for myself, but they will haul a string of cars.
Ed, how much coal does that F3 take on at one time?
I did not get any cars done this week, but I did complete another PC SD45 for the fleet.
This is a Kato SD45, I removed the cast on lift rings and replaced them with wire ones from DA, also added a Sinclair Antenna and the Cab Signal Box on the walkway in front of the Engineer, which necessitated moving the grabs on the low nose to the fireman's side. Also installed red markers from MV Products, A-Line Windshield Wipers and DA MU Hoses. Painted the engine with Scalecoat II Black and lettered with Microscale Decals.
The 6125 was one of 4 SD45's that received the Red P in the PC logo, did not last very long with the Red P as they faded quite badly and were later repainted with the entirely white PC logo.
Thanks for looking!

Rule 1: This is my railroad.
Rule 2: I make the rules.
Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!
A 4 second video of the hot embers in the base of the smoke stack of the power plant I turned out the lights to show the red glow better I used 4 SM red LEDs and a TCS FL 4 decoder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eICqlZPbjiw

I planted all the trees I have. I'll have to make pine trees to fill in any gaps.
Otherwise I've been working on the slag dump. This weekend I'll experiment with techniques to model the molten slag.
Great stuff as usual.
Carnagie....Try mixing caboose red and DRGW Orange together for a molten slag color. I did slag cars, and those two colors pop. Unfortunately, I was unable to write down the ratio I used.
dti406Ed, how much coal does that F3 take on at one time?
If I dump it into the radiator fans when they're running it chops the coal fine enough to fit it into the sand boxes! Or I simply use "Coal Oil"!
Those P-C six-axles sure bring back memories.
I had a friend working for P-C and he would let me hang out and ride along with him. Try that today
Beautiful work, everyone!
This weekend will mostly consist on seeing how far I can get on the current build, a second Reading I-9.
But also some footage from last weekend...

Thank you Jimmy for starting the WPF.
My girlfriend recently asked me why I wanted more CNR box cars. What could I have answered?

Modeling CNR in the 50's
Well...
.
I have spent the past few months working on models to decal during the Summer when it is just too darn hot to even think about going outside. I have been working hard, but I had no idea...
I have 82 freight cars assembled, painted, and ready for decals!
I guess I will be busy all Summer long. This does not even include the locomotives!
40 of these cars will be lettered for the STRATTON & GILLETTE, the rest will be various fictional nonsense railroads from my imagination.
Decalling is my favorite part of freight car building.

Living the dream.
Back in the late 1980s, I built a spray booth that included an under counter type fluroescent light for task lighting. Now after more than 25 years of use, the light was getting very dim - maybe the ballast was going as well. I decided it was time to upgrade, and went to HD and bought an LED under counter light. I installed it today - WOW what a difference!! So bright, I may have to wear sun glasses

Jimmy, Thanks for the WPF start, "Yipes Stripes", nice loco.
Ed, Nicely built and detailed coaling tower.
A couple pacific northeast relatives enjoy their Jeep Wagoneers and I enjoy my 1:87th Brekina version.
Still looking forward to someday having proper sidewalks and pavement.
Thanks to all and regards, Peter
Thanks for the laugh!

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
RDG Casey, that's some great footage of the 611. I have a real fondness for that loco as it pulled the first steam excursion I ever road on. This was sometime in the early 1980s and my late mother joined me on the trip from the east side of Columbus, OH up to Bellvue and back. We rode an open window coach and I wore a pair of safety goggles to keep cinders out of my eyes. At the end of the trip the only clean spot on my face was around my eyes.
Great to see the 611 is still going strong.
Didn't work on anything this weekend. Instead I attended an NMRA meet. The Cajon Division of the Pacific Southwest Region met in Henderson, Nevada.
Clinician Al Phillips discusses Modular Layout Building.
Guy PapillonMy girlfriend recently asked me why I wanted more CNR box cars. What could I have answered?
Well heck Guy, how many did the CNR have? Surely if you are modelling a prototype you have to do it accurately!
Cheers!
Edit:
Sorry, I intended this post to be in the diner. My bad. Maybe Steven will kindly move it for me.
I had a really good time last night! I attended a reception for the 75th anniversary of my Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. The Squadron is 151 Chadburn, named after Wing Commander Lloyd V. Chadburn who was the youngest Wing Commander in the RCAF and who was awarded the Victoria Cross. Sadly, he was killed in a mid-air collision with another Allied aircraft over Normandy just after the invasion.
The Squadron put on a great show. There were hundreds of photographs. It was easy to look for the ones that I might have been in because they were all black and white. One of the pictures that they displayed was my official record photo from when I first became a cadet. The photo was significant because I was the 1,000th cadet to join the Squadron.
I met up with many old friends, some of which I hadn't seen in 44 years! What was truly rewarding for me was how many ex cadets who had served under me when I was the Squadron Warrant Officer came up to greet me and tell me how much they respected my leadership. I was humbled and happy all at the same time.
For those of you who have younger members in your families whether they are children or grand children, I strongly recommend that you encourage them to enlist in a cadet organization, either in Canada or the US. These organizations build maturity, self discipline, self confidence, competence in a variety of fields, and they often lead to successful careers in the military or in civil aviation.
Cheers guys!!
I started mocking up the body and details for a NYCTA Refuse Flat (a.k.a. The Garbage Train) for eventual upload to Shapeways. I still have to figure out how the underbody will look and make sample dumpsters for molding/casting.
