Alternative To Permascene Or Plaster
Posted by caldreamer on Sunday, May 21, 2017 9:38 PM

I have found a better alternative to Permascene or Plaster.  It is called Versabond and can be purchased at any Home Depot or Lowes.  It is a thin set mortar (actually a concrete) used to bond tile to the sub surface.  Being a concrete it is stronger and more durable than either Permascene or Plaster and is less expensice then either.  A 50 pound bag costs $14.47.  It makes great rock molds and can be colored by adding a little of any color of the 99 cent bottles of acrylic paints that can be found at any the big craft stores like Michaels or A.C Moore.  It can be sculpted as well.

Hi caldreamer:

Interesting find. I like the price (although my back won't be happy picking up the 50 lb. bag!).

Thanks,

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Dave:

Kneel down keeping you back straight.  Grab a hold of the 50 pound bag and then stand up.  Your thigh musles are the strongest in your body.  I weigh 105 lbs and can lift 50 pounds easily.
