Old 1970s HO scale Amtrak turbo .... Repower-Modify?????
Posted by 3rd rail on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 9:39 PM

Hi folks. As the title says I have an old 1970's Joueff (I think that is the spelling)? Amtrak French turbo that never ran well since the day I bought it brand new. I'm wondering if anyone here has ever attempted to repower one of these. They have a funky long driveshaft that goes straight from the terrible open frame motor to the rear truck. I tried about 20 years ago to adapt an Athearn SW-1500 motor in there, but couldn't get that to work out. I am open to ALL suggestions. If I can get this thing running well I'd like to detail it and possibly repaint if I can find or custom order correct decals.

Thanks,

Todd

Hello Todd,

I had a friend who had a Jouef Pendolino (UK) train and it also had an ordinary looking mechanism. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I could not investigate it much further but I would have looked at replacing the motor with a Canon can motor.

If the gearbox was faulty, I would have checked out re trucking the unit with an Athearn switcher truck as I have done to a couple of Athearn RDC's I own. Don't laugh - I have sharp curves and they suit and run fairly well!  I do have a Proto car as well!

If you would like a photo or a how to, PM me as I used two techniques for two powered cars,

Cheers from Australia

I see one of those on Ebay once in a while.  Would you post a picture showing the drive?

Mike.
