Rock molds
Posted by Baya on Monday, March 13, 2017 11:05 PM

I have recently ordered rock molds from Bragdon enterprises but have not received a confirmation email from them.  Does anyone know if they are still in business and if they are is there an alternative way to contact them.  Their email address is not valid and their voice mail box is full so I can't contact them that way.  The reason I'm asking this of this forum is because a few years ago an interview was done with him from this web site.  Please help me if you can as I spent over $200.00 on rock molds from this company.

Thank you,

Baya

You can get rock molds here, and probably cheaper. I have some of these molds and have been using them more than 15 years.

I make my own. Get some mold material at the LHS or craft store, pick out your favorite rock, and you're in business. I like to use large chunks of striated coal. The process is a bit more inviolved, but you get the idea.

Welcome to the forums.

Can't help you with your order, but have you checked to see if you have been billed on your cc or has your check been cashed?

I use WS latex to make my own molds.  One rock can make severall different molds of similar type stone.  I also use crumpled tin foil to simulate some of the rock we have in our area.

Good luck,

Richard

Recently is how long?

Be advised the Mr. Bragdon is one of the top landscape builders in the hobby. At times, he travels away from home to work on client's projects in person. It might seem like someone could stay connected while away from home, but the nature of the work is that it usually is intense and must be packed into the time the client has available, so just may not present opportunities to catch up. I fairly certain that your order is OK, just needs a little more patience.

This is an example of some of the projects he works on, in addition to traveling to conventions, etc to do clinics, so he can be away for a time.

I was just on their web site yesterday and it appears to be up and running tonight.  It does say

"Notice: we have been experiencing intermittent problems with our online ordering systems. Please call if you encounter any problems."

I'm just working on a long cliff face for my layout now.  I chose Bragdon molds for this project because this is right up in front of the layout and very visible, and Bragdon products produce the most realistic rock faces.

Read the instructions carefully, half a dozen times at least.  I find that I need more of the "casting satin" mixture than they say by about 25%.  The measurements for the backing foam come out about right.  Take your time with everything except spreading the foams (both of them.)   Once you start mixing the foam, you will not have much working time, so only do one mold at a time so the resin doesn't harden before you have time to start another.

Here are 4 molds I'm using as part of my current project:

It seems intimidating, but once you've done it you'll realize that it's not all that difficult, just a lot of time-consuming steps, and the results will delight you.

I've purchased from Bragdon several times and have a box of their rock molds. Responses may not always be immediate, bet he does ALWAYS respond back. As an aside, his molds work really well with regular casting plaster (i.e.,HydroCal) in addition to the foam material he sells with the molds.
