N Scale Couplers
Posted by originaldirtguy on Monday, February 27, 2017 2:54 PM

Hi guys, I would like to switch all of my couplers to the same type and make them all body mount. Looking at the web, there's about a million to chose from. Is there some way to narrow this down a bit? I also want to move from plastic to metal trucks/wheel sets for all of my rolling stock.

Thanks in advance...

I would standardize on M-T couplers.  I don't see too much available in metal trucks, but several vendors have metal wheel sets for N scale...

Hi guys, I would like to switch all of my couplers to the same type and make them all body mount.

Then you will need Micro Trains 1023 or 1023B and for metal wheels I suggest Inter Mountain 60052 33" wheels and 60052 36" wheels-if needed.

For passenger cars you will need Micro Trains 1017-10 or 1017-10S. The 1017-10S are silver couplers for streamline cars. The -10 behind the number means there's 10  pairs of couplers in the pack.

May I also suggest Micro Trains 1055 coupler height gauge?

As far couplers go , Micro-Trains is what you want just as Brakie suggested , But I would go to the Micro-Trains website and look up coupler conversions. You find many different brands listed and which coupler you should use. Not all cars take the same coupler.

For metal wheelsets, I have a mixture of some Atlas and mostly Fox Valley on my railroad.

Intermountain and BLMA also have wheelsets that from what I have read are very nice but I don't have any of them yet. I do want to check them out though.

From the 4 brands I listed , Atlas are the worst looking but on a moving car they aren't easily noticed.

There are different axle lenghts on different makers trucks so you will want to measure to make sure you get the right ones.

Hope that helps,

Craig

Took a look at MT and the True Couplers look pretty good. It'll be a job but I think I'll convert 10 cars or so to body mountbuying these and see what happens. The height guage seems like a no brainer. Picking one up. Thx guys.

MicroTrains' new True Scale couplers look great, but reports are that they are a bit fiddly to uncouple (and only by hand). If you are interested in operations, that's something to consider.

They are also incompatible with any other coupler, unlike MicroTrains' traditional coupler, so that’s another point to consider.

Good luck with your trial effort.

Well guys this is the kind of Intel I was looking for. I have a hard enough time uncouplimg so making it harder is not so appealing.
