Seeking advice on carriage lighting ...
Posted by PJ2017 on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 10:22 AM

I purchased a Fleischmann 944501 LED lighting kit and am installing it in a Fleischmann carriage. To avoid damage to the downward-facing LED lights, the instructions specify that two washers must be inserted between the carriage mounts and the lighting assemby (see foto here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53682537/Train.png).

With the washers inserted, the lighting assembly sits too high, making it impossible to place the roof on the carriage.  I think I need to use thinner washers, but still thick enough to prevent the LED lights from touching the carriage mounts.  Does this make sense?  Am I going about it in the right way?

FYI that I could insert the LED assembly with the lights pointing upward, but then the capacitor prevents the roof from being installed. So downward-facing LED's seem the better option.

Thanks!

Well, sorry to say I don't understand your problem.  I clicked on your photo link but all I got was an error screen from Dropbox.  So I could not see the assembly.  I don't understand what "carriage mounts" are, and why you don't want LEDs to touch them.  You might try using a bit of electrical tape instead of washers.  Or maybe you need to file something to make it fit?  Unless I can see your picture there isn't much more I can say.

Here is the link again. Not sure why it failed before: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53682537/Train.png

Thanks

I have never worked on a Fleischmann car before, but the electrical tape idea looks like it would lower the light board considerably.  Those screws look really big, too.  Maybe something smaller and flatter?

Thank you both for the advice. I'll try the tape idea. In the meantime, I attached one end of the lighting assembly to the underside of the mount inside the carriage. It wasn't made to work that way, but seems to be ok.

Thanks again!

OK, I can see your photo now.  So the basic problem is the roof won't fit right with the light bar installed?  So you have to either remove some material from the underside of the roof to make room, or lower the light bar.  Those two brass washers look pretty thick for washers.  Thinner ones can be had.  Since they are brass, they aren't serving as electrical insulators.  So what do they do?  LEDs are made of plastic, and touching the plastic to anything isn't going to cause an electrical problem.
